    Gunmen storm Abba Morro farm, rustles 62 cows

    TWO suspected armed robbers have been arrested by the police in Benue State for stealing 62 cows from a farm belonging to the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Morro, in Ugbokolo.

    Addressing newsmen in Makurdi, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Daniel Ezeala, a DSP, said the suspected robbers, Babangida Saidu and Adamu Alhaji, last Friday stormed the Abba Morro Farm in Ugbokolo and took away 63 cows at gun point after they shot to scare away the security men.

    The gunshots attracted the police who mobilised and gave the gunmen a hot pursuit, leading to an exchange of gunfire with the robbers.

    They were later overpowered and the cows recovered from them at Aliade in Gwer Local Government Area.

    Ezeala said Saidu hails from Suleja in Niger State while Alhaji is from Igumale in Ado local government area of Benue State.

    He said a local made pistol was recovered from the suspects while others escaped.

    The suspects, he said, would be charged to court.

    There was chaos in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, yesterday when a tanker carrying petroleum products rammed into a vehicle and burst into flames.

    An eyewitness, Daniel, said the tanker was coming from the North Bank axis of the capital.

    The incident, which resulted in a gridlock, forced motorists to divert to the Old Bridge.

    The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Utilities, Gadaffi Asemanya, advised drivers to always have fire extinguishers.

    He said there was no casualty but decried the attitude of the tanker driver and his assistant who escaped.

    Police spokesman Daniel Ezeala confirmed the incident.

    Barely two weeks after female students of the Benue State University, Makurdi, were attacked and raped by unknown gunmen, students of the College of Advanced and Professional Studies (CAPS) faced a similar ordeal on Tuesday as gunmen invaded the school and brutally attacked them.

    The gunmen numbering more than six, stormed the institution in the early hours of Tuesday precisely at about 4:30am and forced their way into the female hostels while the girls were sleeping and swooped on five of the students apparently with the intension of raping them.

    Our correspondent gathered that the gunmen had on arrival to the college, tied the security men in the college who were unarmed with ropes and blindfolded them before carrying out the operation which lasted for hours.

    The Nation gathered however that, when the students heard the banging on the doors, they raised alarm which attracted the attention of their mates from the other blocks, followed by shouts which made the invaders to take to their heels.                     .

    No fewer than five students were badly affected in the attack, which has brought trepidation to the entire institution and the host community.

    Valuable items belonging to the students including handsets, iPads and laptop computers among others were carted away by the invaders.

    The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ezeala said no report of such incidence had reached him as at press time, but the Sole Administrator of the CAPS, Dr. Tyotom Keghku, who confirmed the attack to journalists, however said two female students who were attacked have been rushed to a private hospital in Makurdi for treatment.

  • Three-month-old baby stolen in Makurdi

    The Benue Police Command on Monday confirmed that a three-month old baby belonging to one Mr. Ikyavngi Imande had been stolen in Makurdi.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the baby was stolen on April 19 at about 8.00pm on Inikpi Street, High Level, Makurdi.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Daniel Ezeala, told NAN in Makurdi that the command had opened full investigation into the matter.

    Ezeala said that police had arrested one suspect, while the others were still at large.

    He assured the family and the people of the state of adequate security.

    NAN reports that the prime suspect, simply identified as Chichi, was in Makurdi to adopt a baby, but was turned down by the government officials.

    Speaking to NAN, the mother of the baby, Mrs. Msendoo Ikyavngi, said that her baby was stolen in her house on Saturday, April 19, around 8.00pm.

    “It was on Saturday evening around 8.00pm that Chichi, the girlfriend of my neighbour, Mr. Amos, came to my house, tricked my nanny and stole my baby.

    “My nanny was with the baby and she was crying.

    “So, Chichi came and took the baby for the purpose of making her stop crying. She now sent my nanny to get water for her to drink.

    “It was then that Chichi ran away with my baby right in my house.

    “When this was happening I had dashed out of the house to buy food items.

    “We have been seeing her recently and we felt she is a friend,” she said.

     

  • Eight killed in Benue

    Eight persons were killed yesterday in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

    The House of Assembly member representing Agatu, Sule Audu, said some men were dredging sand in the river, when the gunmen attacked them.

    Audu said the bodies of the victims had been moved to the Obagaji, the council headquarters.

    The lawmaker said soldiers, who were drafted to Agatu, have continued to stay in Obagaji.

    He appealed to security officials not to restrict their movement to the council headquarters but to the nooks and crannies of all the communities in Agatu.

    The Agatu Elders Committee, in a statement by its chairman, Sule Ngbede and Secretary Abu Onum, lamented that the soldiers have not been patrolling flash points.

    Police spokesman Daniel Ezeala confirmed the incident, saying the remains of the victims have been taken to the mortuary.

  • Gunmen burn down council boss house

    The Benue Police Command on Wednesday confirmed that some gunmen burnt down the house of Mr. Teryima Nguher, Chairman of Ukum Local Government, in Kyado village.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ezeala, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Makurdi that the incidence occurred on Tuesday.

    Ezeala said investigation so far showed that the gunmen invaded the house between 8.00pm and 10.00 pm.

    He said the police had not made any arrest but gave the assurance that the culprits would be arrested and brought to book.

    Ezeala said that apart from Nguher’s house, no other one in the village was burnt during the incidence.

    Three die in Benue’s early-morning inferno

    Three persons were burnt to death in a early morning inferno which razed down a apartment at Katsina Ala street, Makurdi, Benue state, on Tuesday.

    The victims were 40- year old member of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Worker Terhemen Makar, his wife and a two- year old son who were completely burnt beyond recognition.

    The only survivor of the inferno was a seven -year old son of the deceased who was rescued by sympathizers who forced open part of the building.

    He sustained injuries and was quickly rushed to St.Theresa’s Hospital in the state capital for treatment.

    An eye witness, Terna Iorza, told The Nation that the fire started shortly after the Power Holding Company of Nigeria restored electricity in the area.

    Immediately there was a spark and fire with thick smoke engulfed the entire apartment, which is heavily fortified with burglary proof.

    Terhemen and his wife reportedly struggled in the thick smoke until they were burnt to death with their two-year old baby.

    The state Police Public Relation Officer, Daniel Ezeala, confirmed the incident, saying investigations have commenced on the matter.
