  • Court disqualifies Taraba APC candidate for alleged falsification of age

The Federal High Court in Jalingo Wednesday disqualified the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State, Alhaji Sani Abubakar Danladi, from contesting the polls on Saturday over alleged falsification of age.

The decision of the court followed a case instituted against Danladi, APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by Usman Udi, Joshua Paaku, George Geoffrey and Tanko Muslim Munkaila in suit number: FHC/JAL/CS/1/2019.

The plaintiffs are said to be APC members who are aggrieved over Danladi’s “dubious emergence” as the party’s candidate.

The plaintiffs’ lawyer, Imoukhuede Hope, Esq., via an originating summon, dated January 9, 2019, had sought a declaration that: “The information contained in the affidavit supporting the personal particulars that Sani Abubakar Danladi was born on the February 14, 1968 is in conflict with Sani Abubakar Danladi’s date of birth contained in his West African Senior School Certificate submitted to INEC by him which indicates that Sani Abubakar Danladi was born on 3rd April 1977”

The litigants also sought another declaration that: “The information given by Sani Abubakar Danladi as to his age in the affidavit in support of his personal particulars in the INEC form CF001 submitted to INEC by him is false”.

Their lawyer further sought an order of the court to disqualify the Taraba APC flag bearer (Danladi) from contesting the March 9, 2019 governorship poll.

The Plaintiffs filed the suit pursuant to Section 31(5) and (6) of the Electoral Act 2010 which provides in section 31(5) that: “Any person who has reasonable grounds to believe that any information given by a candidate in the affidavit or any document submitted by that candidate is false may file a suit at the Federal High Court, High Court of a state or FCT against such person seeking a declaration that the information contained in the affidavit is false.”

31(6): “If the Court determines that any of the information contained in the affidavit or any document submitted by that candidate is false, the Court shall issue an order disqualifying the candidate from contesting the election”.

Upon being served with the originating summons, Danladi, through his legal counsel, Yakubu Maikasuwa, Esq. filed a counter affidavit and a preliminary objection on January 30 seeking to strike out the suit on grounds that it was “a pre-election matter.”

As the case was going on, Prof. Mohammed Sani Yahaya, a former Vice Chancellor of the Taraba State University who also contested the Taraba APC Governorship primaries, sought to join in the suit against Danladi.

Prof. Yahaya, through his lawyer, P.D. Pius, Esq., prayed the Court to declare him as the lawful candidate of APC in Taraba state to contest the governorship polls.

He argued that: “Danladi failed, neglected and/or refused to present legally valid and recognised evidence that he is educated up to school certificate level or its equivalent.

“There is no record of any candidate with the name of Abubakar Sani Danladi at Bachama Primary School in 1979/84.”

Justice Stephen Pam of the Federal High Court, in his judgement yesterday upheld the submissions of the plaintiffs. He ordered that “Danladi is disqualified from contesting the March 9, governorship election.”

The state chairman of APC, Ibrahim Elsudi Tukur, said “the issue (of age falsification) had been taken to court in the year 2007 and was subsequently dismissed by the Appeal Court” and was not supposed to be admitted by a lower court again.

He said they will appeal the judgment.

The State INEC chairman, Baba Abba Yusuf, told reporters that the headquarters of INEC is expected to communicate to him on the judgment.

“Results like this one can only spur us to work harder and dream big. We have the best fans in the league and we are not disputing their passion for the game. We have set a standard for this club that we must maintain. We see the pressure from the fans as the needed motivation to fight harder and dream big. This draw against Pillars is the beginning of better things to come. We hope to consolidate on that to get all three points at home this weekend against another difficult opponent, MFM FC. Once that is achieved, we can say the revival has began in full swing,” Danladi said.

He added: “We have a governor who has given us everything we want, we have a Deputy Governor too who listen to our cries.  When you have all these going for you, there is no excuse for failure and we cannot endeavour to fail.

“Twenty teams started this race from kick off, we are currently sitting in 9th position but we can get better before the mid season. Rangers won the league last season, Rivers United finished second but today both teams are not finding life comfortable at the bottom. The race is a marathon, nobody can rule Rangers or Rivers United out of the title race just yet, just as no one should rule us out too.

“Our target is to win a trophy or at worst pick a continental ticket this season to appease our teeming fans and to say thank you to the government and people of Nasarawa state for all their support thus far.”

“I believe hardwork was one of the the key factors that propelled me in the last top-flight season,” Danladi told Goal.

“My performance was great. As a team we fought a lot of battles and scaled through the hurdle.

“There was a lot of determination and willingness to win games and the quality in terms of individual players also helped us get the points that we needed in the last 15 games of the last season.

“I have settled down very well in Jos. My major objective is to play for Plateau United in the next campaign and see what happens.”

Plateau United goalkeeper, Isa Danladi has disclosed that the Jos outfit will remain focused till the end of the season, otherwise risk falling down the table.

Danladi, who has been an important part of Plateau United’s amazing form, said that the players have continued to motivate themselves.

Currently placed 11th on the NPFL  log, Plateau United have recorded three successive wins, an achievement that  has not been seen in over a decade.

“The competition in the Nigerian league is very tough. To survive you just have to remain focused all through the season else you may be found wanting at the base of the table,” Danladi told Goal.

“We have consistently motivated ourselves as no player loves to play in a team that will go down to the lower division. We have had a super performance in recent times but the challenge now is to maintain that flow which i do admit is very tough.

“God has been the reason why you saw that movement. We won three matches in a row which hasn’t happened in years at this club. It’s not easy but we just have to maintain this form till the end of the season.

“We can’t afford to in any way lose concentration or get carried away because of what we have achieved lately.”

  • CAF Confed Cup: Nasarawa Utd’s players were pampered in Dakar – Danladi

CAF Confed Cup: Nasarawa Utd’s players were pampered in Dakar – Danladi

Nasarawa United chairman,Isaac Danladi has refuted reports that players of the club were not well taken care of when they travelled to Dakar to face Generation Foot FC of Senegal in the return leg, preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Solid Miners eventually qualified for the first round of the competition courtesy of a 2-1 aggregate scoreline but just a day after returning to the country, some anonymous players of the squad were quoted to have claimed that they were given $235 (about N46,812) as travelling and feeding allowances.

Reacting in emphatic terms,Danladi described the report as baseless and unfounded stressing that instead of condemnation, the management of the club deserves to be commended for the professional approach they went about prosecuting the second leg in Dakar.

The lawyer turned football administrator reminded those peddling the rumour that the team arrived Dakar four clear days before the game to underline the seriousness they attached to the game.

According to him, on arrival in Dakar, the players were lodged in a five star hotel which he rated higher than where the Super Eagles are usually lodged when they make such trips.

“The players ate breakfast that was served in buffets at the hotel but we had to in addition arrange for Nigerian food to be made available to them with the help of the Nigerian embassy in Dakar.

“With this arrangement, throughout their stay in Dakar, the players ate Nigerian food as their lunch and dinner. So,tell me how the management maltreated them,”he asked.

Danladi, who is also the chairman of the club owners association, described the purported amount given to the players as mere pocket money since all their needs in terms of accomodation and feeding have all been adequately taken care of by the management of the club.

“That report was really meant to create the wrong impression and paint the management of Nasarawa United in bad light but thank God other personalities from the state were there to attest to the quality treatment we gave to the players.

“Immediately we arrived Abuja on Sunday, the players were driven to Lokoja for our midweek game against Niger Tornadoes. In essence, the team got to Lokoja three  days before the game to avoid the fatigue of travelling to Lafia and from there journey again to Lokoja.

“We did all these because we care about the well being of our players. Though, arriving venues of our games in time cost a lot of money but we don’t mind as long as the players are comfortable and are able to help the club actualise its mandate.”
