The Executive Vice Chairman of SIDIL Energy Alternatives Limited, Alhassan Dantata, has emphasised that green hydrogen represents the world’s final opportunity to transition to clean energy, urging Africa to take a leading role in this global shift.

He made the statement at a capacity-building workshop for private sector stakeholders on green hydrogen, held on Thursday, September 19, at the Nordic Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Dantata underscored Africa’s unique position in the green energy landscape, noting that while the continent played a catalytic role in past industrial revolutions through the exploitation of its people and resources, it now holds an irreplaceable advantage with its abundant renewable energy sources.

“Africa has the wind, the sun, and the water, resources that no one can take away from us,” Dantata stated. “We have the sun 365 days a year, and the northeast trade winds from the Sahara ensure we have consistent wind power. We should be the frontrunners in green hydrogen production.”

He further expressed that Africa is in a prime position to become a global energy exporter, even suggesting that the continent could supply power to Europe via submarine cables.

“Just as we import bandwidth from Europe, we should be exporting power because we have the necessary resources,” he added.

However, Dantata highlighted the importance of political will and collaboration to achieve this vision. He identified tribalism and religious divisions as the primary obstacles to Africa’s progress in the green hydrogen revolution, stating, “If we can overcome these challenges, Africa will be great.”

He said: “But the beautiful part of this energy we’re discussing is that this is something you have to have your foot on the ground because Africa now has what you can’t take away. We have the wind, the sun and we have the water and you can’t take that away.

“We have the sun 365 days a year. We have the wind because coming from the Sahara, we have the northeast trade winds that always keep the wind mines on 24/7 and so we have no excuse. We should be the frontrunners in green hydrogen.

“Africa should be about to export power through submarine cables just like we are importing band waves from Europe. We should be giving them power because we have the sun, the wind, and the water.

“It is just our will. Do we have the political will and the right mindset and can we collaborate to make it happen? From what I have observed over a period of three to four years, the killer effect in Africa is just two, tribalism and religion. If we can overcome that, Africa will be great.”

The workshop gathered energy sector stakeholders to explore the potential of green hydrogen in Africa and the continent’s role in the global clean energy transition.

Dantata backs parliamentary system, says it’s cheaper

Business mogul, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, has backed moves by some National Assembly members to adopt the parliamentary system of government.

The nonagenarian said the parliamentary system is the best thing to happen to Nigeria, saying it is cheaper to practise than the presidential.

Dantata was a parliamentarian in the First Republic.

He spoke on Thursday, February 15, while receiving a delegation of 60 members of the House of Representatives who are seeking a return to the parliamentary system of government.

He said: “Nigeria will be great again if the parliamentary system is readopted.”

The parliamentary system is a democratic form of government in which the party (or a coalition of political parties) with the greatest representation in the parliament or legislature forms the government, and the leader becomes prime minister.

Nigeria practised the parliamentary system from 1960 to 1966, under Abubakar Tafawa Balewa as the prime minister and head of government.

In 1966, Nigeria adopted the presidential system, replacing the office of prime minister with the president of Nigeria who now holds the role.

Dantata said the presidential system is unmanageable and costlier for the country, hence the need for change.

He said: “Things are not working, the country is stagnant and the citizens are not enjoying anything out of it so there should be a serious move to adopt the parliamentary system so that Nigeria would be great.”

Dantata warned the legislators pushing for the adoption of the parliamentary system not to pursue personal interests but to advance the general interest of the masses and the country.

Hon Kingsley Chinda, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Rivers State who is heading the delegation, noted that the presidential system which Nigeria is operating now is not only costly but cumbersome, making it difficult to manage.

He said: “Even the Prime Minister would be chosen from the National Assembly and other governors and any attempt for them to go astray would be tackled easily by the members.”

The delegation urged Nigerians and the media to support the move to switch from the presidential system of government to the parliamentary system.
