“I was part of the Presidential Committee on police reform. We were chosen by the National Economic Council (NEC), to inspect facilities at the police colleges and the Police Staff College.

” Last week, the governors of Nasarawa, Taraba, and I traveled to Kaduna, Plateau and Borno for this purpose.

The governor said the state government would identify land to be transferred to the fund to fasttrack development of the police housing estate project.

Why I declared emergency in health, education— Governor Lawal

Governor Dauda Lawal has said he declared emergency in education and health sector to revamp the two areas for the commonwealth of his citizens.

He revealed this on Monday when he hosted the management of the newly established Federal University of Medical Sciences and Health Technology, Tsafe, in Gusau on Monday.

The governor, welcoming the management team, stated that his administration had declared a state of emergency in education and health to demonstrate its commitment to revitalizing these two sectors.

He said, “I want to welcome you to the Zamfara State Government House. This is the first time we are meeting officially to discuss the newly established university.

“As you are aware, my administration declared two states of emergency: emergency on education and health. This new university combines the two; despite being a school, it focuses on medical sciences. Of course, health is an important sector that we value and are eager to revive. So, you are welcome here.

“The good thing is that we have approximately four hectares of land, which is enough for any project we want to undertake to improve the university. My administration has invested over 8 billion naira in the school.

“As a responsible administration, we will do everything possible to ensure you have what you need for a smooth start. “Be assured that my government is committed to supporting the university fully. We will continue to seek additional funds, and everyone is united in this effort, standing by you.

“I was in America the last time, and they did mention your name. I know you have gone a long way in trying to make Zamfara better. This university stands alone as the first and only university offering health sciences and medical technology. Our biggest issue in Nigeria is the lack of access to sophisticated medical equipment, but now the university is here to fill that gap.

“The the university needs your support. Most importantly, we want to take off. I have visited the school and seen the renovation work that has been done. We currently don’t have any challenges. No plans to join APC, says Lawal

Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal has denied rumours on social media that he is set to decamp to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

His Senior Special Adviser on Media, Mustapha Jafaru Kaura, stated this in a special announcement on the Facebook handle of the Governor’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Mugira Yusuf on Friday.

  • Governor Lawal’s lamentations

    Governor Lawal’s lamentations

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal recently said he had capacity to end banditry in the state within two months if given direct control of the security agencies.

The governor spoke on a live media chat with local radio stations at Government House in Gusau, saying a major obstacle to tackling insecurity challenge in the state was that security operatives take instructions from Abuja and not the state government. “I can tell you the whereabouts of every bandit kingpin in Zamfara, even with my phone. I can point to you where they are right now. But I do not control security agencies, and that is the problem,” he lamented. Lawal argued that with his knowledge of the terrain and locations of criminal leaders, he could swiftly eradicate the menace if he had the necessary powers.

Zamfara is a hotbed of banditry in the North-west zone, with the insecurity crisis accounting for scores of killings, abductions and desolation of rural communities from where residents have been forced to flee by bandit attacks. Since he assumed office in May 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lawal has repeatedly alleged lack of enthusiasm by security operatives under the control of federal authorities to fight the bandits. He often fingered his immediate predecessor and now Defence Minister of State Bello Matawalle, who is of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for impairing efforts to tackle down the menace. He therefore has been in the vanguard of calls for establishment of state police.

Shredding up in tears as he recounted recent attacks, the governor cited Shinkafi council area where dozens were killed, saying security forces on ground refused to move because they lacked authorisation from Abuja. “People were under attack, and I kept calling the security agencies. They told me they were waiting for orders from Abuja. How do I save my people in such a situation?” he stated in frustration.

But the APC in Zamfara dismissed Lawal’s comments, accusing him of harboring bandits and failing to deliver on his campaign promise to end insecurity within two months of assuming office. Spokesman Yusuf Idris said in a statement that the governor’s repeated claims of knowing the locations of bandit leaders without acting on the information amounted to complicity. “We don’t know why he is harbouring them in the state and continues to allow them to kill and abduct innocent citizens, or perhaps because he wants to use them against his political rivals,” the party alleged and accused the governor of politicising insecurity.

Take out partisan contention, and the positions canvassed by both sides aren’t mutually exclusive. You wonder why Governor Lawal awaits when he takes over the control of security agencies before putting the vital information he allegedly possesses at their disposal. But also, it makes profound sense that the control of security agencies – at least, the police – be devolved to the states. When two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.

Mid-Term review: Group evaluates Zamfara gov, questions FAAC fund utilisation

Two years into the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal, a civil society organisation in Zamfara State has raised concerns over the state’s development trajectory and the utilisation of funds received from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

The Zamfara Progressive Coalition (ZAC), in a statement signed by its president, Alhaji Ibrahim Dan-Azumi, assessed the administration’s performance midway through its tenure.

The group urged greater transparency and a clearer connection between federal allocations and visible outcomes on the ground.

While acknowledging the significant funds received from FAAC since 2023, the group questioned the impact of these allocations on key sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security.

ZAC noted that many communities in Zamfara still grapple with insecurity, underfunded schools, and limited access to quality healthcare.

The group called for a renewed focus on addressing the socio-economic challenges confronting the state.

“We believe the mid-term point is an important time for reflection and redirection,” the statement read. “There is a need for a more responsive approach to governance—one that addresses insecurity, revives local economies, and ensures efficient use of public resources.”

The coalition highlighted the importance of empowering youths through job creation, vocational training, and agricultural development, while also emphasising the need for stronger state presence in rural areas.

To encourage greater public accountability, ZAC announced plans to begin publishing monthly performance scorecards to track the governor’s activities and inform citizens.

The group also called for an independent audit of FAAC allocations to Zamfara State since 2023, to enhance public confidence and ensure that funds are being used to meet the state’s development priorities.

  • Two years of Gov Dauda Lawal’s legacy of unmatched transformation

Two years of Gov Dauda Lawal’s legacy of unmatched transformation

Since his historic inauguration as the Executive Governor of Zamfara State, His Excellency, Dr. Dauda Lawal, has not merely occupied a position of power; he has fundamentally redefined the essence of leadership. With an unwavering commitment to progress and development, his administration has actively dismantled the barriers of stagnation that have plagued the state for years. Under his guidance, Zamfara has witnessed unprecedented advancements across every sector, transforming the landscape of governance and public service.

Zamfara, once deeply affected by insecurity, infrastructural deficits, and long-standing systemic neglect, is now undergoing a remarkable transformation. Thanks to Governor Lawal’s visionary stewardship, the state is rising like a phoenix from the ashes of its past challenges. His administration’s bold, people-centred policies have not only prioritised the welfare of citizens but have also fostered an environment of hope and renewal.

Key initiatives have addressed infrastructure development, healthcare access, and educational reform, paving the way for a brighter future. The increased investment in capital projects and community programs has ignited a revolution of prosperity, empowering local economies and creating job opportunities for the youth.

Dr. Lawal’s governance style is distinguished by transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, setting a new gold standard for leadership in Northern Nigeria. The movement he is spearheading extends beyond political reform; it represents a collective stride toward a more secure, prosperous, and unified Zamfara. This is not just governance; this is a transformative movement toward progress and empowerment for all citizens.

AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION: FROM FARMING TO FORTUNE

Farming is not only the primary occupation in Zamfara but also the cornerstone of its economy and the livelihood of its people. Under the leadership of Governor Lawal, the agricultural sector has undergone a remarkable transformation through a series of innovative initiatives aimed at revitalising rural farming communities. To date, over 100,000 farmers have benefited from substantial support programs that provide high-quality seedlings, fertilisers, and state-of-the-art farming equipment, all at no cost. This strategic intervention is designed to significantly boost crop yields and ensure food security for the state.

The revival of abandoned irrigation schemes marks a turning point for agriculture in Zamfara, allowing for year-round farming and reducing dependency on unreliable rainfall. This shift enables farmers to cultivate crops continuously, enhancing productivity and ensuring a steady flow of income.

In addition to these advancements, Zamfara is experiencing an agro-industrial boom fueled by strategic partnerships with leading agribusiness firms. These collaborations are focused on processing raw agricultural products, thereby creating value, generating employment opportunities, and drastically reducing post-harvest losses that have historically plagued the sector.

Significantly, these agricultural initiatives have also fostered empowerment among women and youth. Thousands of young farmers and women’s cooperatives have received funding and training, positioning agriculture as a profitable venture rather than merely a means of survival. This renewed focus on agribusiness has successfully reinstated Zamfara’s status as a vital food basket, allowing farmers to reap financial rewards and contribute to the local economy. As a result, there is a palpable sense of optimism, with farmers now smiling to the bank, witnessing the fruits of their labour as dignity and prosperity return to their communities.

INFRASTRUCTURAL EXPLOSION: BUILDING THE NEW ZAMFARA

Governor Lawal is spearheading a transformative construction initiative that is significantly reshaping the landscape of Zamfara. This ambitious project is not only enhancing infrastructure but also fostering connectivity among communities, stimulating local trade, and reinstating a sense of pride among residents.

The urban renewal efforts in Gusau, the state capital, serve as a prime example of this revolution. Central to the initiative is the construction and rehabilitation of over 200 kilometres of roads, which are crucial in breaking decades of isolation for many remote villages. As construction continues on numerous ongoing projects, residents eagerly anticipate the positive impacts these improvements will bring to their daily lives.

In addition to roadway enhancements, critical infrastructures such as schools, hospitals, and government buildings, once in a state of neglect, have undergone extensive renovations. Many of these structures have been transformed into state-of-the-art facilities, positioning Zamfara firmly in the modern era of development.

Furthermore, rural communities that had long endured darkness and a lack of basic utilities now have access to reliable electricity and clean potable water. This essential service, considered a fundamental human right, is finally being delivered to those who need it most, significantly improving their quality of life. Through these comprehensive improvements, Governor Lawal is not only paving the way for economic growth but also enriching the lives of Zamfara’s citizens, ensuring a brighter and more prosperous future for all.

HEALTHCARE METAMORPHOSIS: SAVING LIVES, RESTORING HOPE

Upon assuming office, Governor Lawal declared a state of emergency in the healthcare sector of the state, recognising its dire condition. The healthcare system was almost at a standstill, with a significant portion of the population unable to access essential primary and secondary health services. A glaring shortage of medical facilities and healthcare practitioners plagued the system, leading to widespread suffering and preventable illnesses among the citizens.

Having thoroughly assessed the situation, Governor Lawal was determined to implement a lasting solution to ensure that the people of the state could lead healthier lives. This commitment ignited a healthcare revolution aimed at revitalising the sector, which has significantly decreased mortality rates and provided citizens with renewed hope for their well-being.

As a crucial part of the rehabilitation and revitalisation process for the health sector—long neglected by previous administrations, Governor Lawal initiated the revitalisation of over 50 primary healthcare centres. These facilities underwent comprehensive renovations, were fully equipped with modern medical tools, and staffed with qualified healthcare professionals, thereby ensuring that quality medical care is now available at the doorstep of rural communities.

Today, thousands of women, children, and elderly citizens benefit from free surgeries, vaccinations, and a range of medical treatments, reinforcing the belief that healthcare is a fundamental right rather than a mere privilege. The state has also embarked on a thorough campaign to combat various diseases, including proactive measures against cholera outbreaks, malaria, polio, and initiatives centred around maternal health. These efforts have dramatically reduced preventable deaths and improved the overall health landscape within the state, fostering a safer and healthier environment for all residents.

EDUCATION RESURGENCE: BREAKING THE CHAINS OF IGNORANCE

Governor Lawal, equipped with an impressive educational background, firmly believes that education is the most powerful tool in the fight against poverty. Driven by this conviction, his administration has launched a comprehensive campaign to eradicate illiteracy. This initiative involves implementing a range of innovative policies aimed at bringing countless out-of-school children back into the educational system and significantly increasing the overall literacy rate. Such improvements are expected to have a profound impact on reducing crime levels in the state.

Recognising the urgent need for modernisation in education facilities, many dilapidated classrooms have been transformed into vibrant learning environments, featuring advanced technology, new desks, and a variety of learning materials that cater to the needs of today’s students. Furthermore, the professional development of over 5,000 educators has been a cornerstone of this educational reform, ensuring that students receive high-quality teaching. This investment in human capital has elevated the state’s educational performance, positioning it above many of its peers in national rankings.

To foster academic excellence among disadvantaged students, the state has established scholarship programs specifically designed to support those in need. These scholarships aim to provide equal access to high-quality education at prestigious institutions. Moreover, technical and vocational education has received considerable attention under Governor Lawal’s administration, leading to a significant increase in enrollment. This effort has empowered thousands of young people with practical skills that go beyond mere certification, equipping them for successful careers and contributing to the state’s economic development.

WORKERS & PENSIONERS: FINALLY, A GOVERNMENT THAT CARES

For many years, the workers and pensioners of Zamfara endured severe hardships, living in conditions akin to beggars due to the chronic neglect of their financial needs. They faced the grim reality of months of unpaid salaries and pensions, with many pensioners tragically losing their lives as a result of the inconsistent and inadequate payments that plagued previous administrations. The suffering of these individuals was palpable, as they expressed their frustration and desperation over their deteriorating circumstances.

However, since Dauda Lawal assumed office, there has been a significant and encouraging turnaround. He has prioritised the welfare of the state’s employees and pensioners by ensuring that salaries and pensions are paid promptly, bringing relief to those who have long endured financial instability. In a remarkable display of financial commitment, Lawal has also addressed the staggering backlog of over N10 billion in unpaid salaries and pensions that accumulated under his predecessors.

Moreover, while many states struggled to implement the new minimum wage due to financial constraints, Zamfara has managed to adopt it smoothly, demonstrating a commitment to improving the living standards of its workforce. In addition to these critical changes, Lawal has initiated reforms within the civil service aimed at streamlining operations and reducing bureaucracy. This includes the identification and elimination of ghost workers, thereby increasing efficiency within the system. Furthermore, he has reinstated timely promotions for workers, fostering a culture of productivity and motivating employees to excel in their roles. Through these efforts, Lawal is not only transforming the civil service but is also significantly uplifting the lives of the people in Zamfara.

SECURITY & PEACE: WINNING THE WAR AGAINST BANDITS

Zamfara State, once notorious for rampant banditry, has seen a remarkable turnaround under the leadership of Governor Lawal. Determined to restore peace and safety to the region, he has implemented a multifaceted strategy that includes the establishment of community policing initiatives and the integration of local vigilantes into the state’s security framework. This collaborative effort, in partnership with various federal security agencies, has led to a significant shift in the security landscape.

As a result of these initiatives, several local governments previously under the control of bandits have been reclaimed, restoring stability and order to the affected areas. In addition to reclaiming territory, Governor Lawal’s administration has also focused on economic empowerment, engaging thousands of unemployed youths in legitimate ventures. This approach not only provides sustainable livelihoods but also effectively diminishes the recruitment pool for bandits, addressing the root causes of insecurity.

Furthermore, Lawal has adopted a non-kinetic approach aimed at reconciling warring factions within the state. By promoting dialogue and understanding among communities, he is fostering an environment conducive to lasting peace. This comprehensive strategy combines security measures with social initiatives, paving the way for a more secure and harmonious Zamfara State.

GUSAU AIRPORT CONSTRUCTION: GATEWAY TO ZAMFARA’S INDUSTRIALISATION

Despite the challenges that many investors face, including security concerns and the threat of banditry along accessible routes, the state is taking bold steps to attract business opportunities. One of the most significant initiatives underway is the development of the Gusau Airport, which is nearing completion. This airport is being equipped with cutting-edge aviation technology, designed to facilitate commercial activities and bolster the state’s economy.

The establishment of this airport is expected to serve as a substantial catalyst for investment, as it will enhance the state’s connectivity and make it an attractive destination for business ventures. The fertile land and rich mineral resources of the state present immense opportunities for agricultural and mining investments. The government envisions that the airport will not only facilitate air travel but also enable the efficient airlifting of agricultural produce to different regions of the country, thus promoting market access for local farmers and boosting the agricultural sector significantly.

Furthermore, the airport is seen as a gateway to unlocking new economic potentials beyond agriculture and minerals. It will contribute to the growth of livestock rearing and other significant aspects of the economy, opening avenues for diverse investment opportunities. The state’s commitment to improving its infrastructure and economic prospects positions it as a promising landscape for both current and future investors. This holistic approach aims to enhance prosperity and create a more vibrant economic environment, ultimately benefiting the community as a whole.

In his unwavering commitment to improving the state for the better, Governor Lawal has been tirelessly collaborating with critical stakeholders to cultivate a Zamfara that serves the interests of all its residents. Despite facing challenges and criticisms from detractors who engage in political games, he remains resolute in his mission. Governor Lawal is determined to rise above the negativity and focus on what’s truly important: delivering the tangible benefits of democracy to his people. His dedication reflects a genuine desire to foster progress and unity in Zamfara, ensuring that every citizen can experience the positive impact of his policies and leadership.
