Post UNLEASHLAB2017: Why the 17 SDGs matter to you

The relentless energy of 1000 great young innovators who were engaged by UNLEASH to proffer scalable solutions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially to meet the 2030 deadline of the United Nations (UN), evokes the words of Vincent Van Gogh, a Dutch painter who lived between 1853 and 1890, and said: “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together”.

Till date, the efforts by member states of the United Nations (UN) and a few private individuals only seem to have succeeded in scratching the surface of the problem because energy wasn’t synchronized towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and it might not achieve it before the set deadline of 2030.

To further confirm this, Camilla Bruckner, Director at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Nordic Representative Office noted that it is the first time in history that all countries are represented for one goal.

She clearly made this known while addressing the diverse audience from 129 countries, stressing that the goal is to achieve the 17 SDGs before the deadline of the year 2030.

Bruckner noted that nations depend on one another emphasising that “we must work together to achieve these goals”, she said.

In his remarks at the closing ceremony of UNLEASH at Aarhus in Denmark, Anders Don, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Partner, Delloite, Denmark identified trust, courage, co-creation and diversity of thoughts as factors that can “allow us to change the world”.

Furthermore, strong words of motivation were also spoken by Trisha Shetty, Founder and CEO, SheSays from India, who noted that beyond the fact that there is a problem, “we have a plan. The plan is the SDG and we must follow it through.

“We have to be resilient in order to achieve our goals. Also, we will treat the SDGs as social development goals and use them to seek results from leaders. We will hold them accountable.

“The problem looks complex but the solutions don’t have to be. What is important is that the solutions shall be localised and implemented.”

It is fascinating, however, to note that what this implies is that everyone’s skills, resources as well as failure experiences are required to achieve the desired solutions to save our planet and ultimately, save ourselves. At the moment, if there are about 30million children growing up poor in the world’s richest countries, then, the fate of the children growing poorly in developing countries is only better imagined.

Reports have it that there are more than 700 million people still living in extreme poverty and cannot afford to have the most basic needs like health, education, and access to water and sanitation. A number of people living in Southern Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa live on less than US$1.90 a day, which is about 70% of the global total. Countries like China, India, Indonesia and Nigeria, are home to about half of the global poor.

In another development, about 44% of the member states of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported less than 0ne physician per 1000 population, thereby leading to the death of approximately 830 pregnant women due to preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.

Therefore, between 2017 and 2030, to be able to reduce this staggering figure to 70 per 100,000 live birth, as planned by the UN, it is no more a matter of ‘I’m not poor. Why should I care about other people’s economic situation’ because our well- being is linked to each other.

Global reports have shown that the growing inequality is detrimental to economic growth and it damages social unity, increasing political and social tensions and (in some circumstances) driving instability and conflicts.

It is in this effort that Flemming Besenbacher, through UNLEASH has engaged young persons because Youths’ active engagement in policy-making can make a difference in addressing poverty. This is because their rights are promoted and their voices should be heard. By so doing, inter-generational knowledge is shared and that innovation and critical thinking are encouraged to support transformational change in people’s lives and communities.

In a presentation at the UN Headquarters in New York City, United States of America, the message to lawmakers and governments includes that they can help create an enabling environment to generate productive employment and job opportunities for the poor and the marginalized, adding that they could formulate strategies and fiscal policies that stimulate pro-poor growth, and reduce poverty.

It further stated that Private Sector workers, being an engine of economic growth, have a major role to play in determining whether the growth it creates is inclusive and hence contributes to poverty reduction. The UN stressed that the Sector could promote economic opportunities for the poor, focusing on segments of the economy where most of the poor are active, namely on micro and small enterprises and those operating in the informal sector.

If you are part of the science and academic community, note that Science provides the foundation for new and sustainable approaches, solutions and technologies to tackle the challenges of reducing poverty and achieving sustainable development. The academic and education community has a major role in increasing the awareness about the impact of poverty.

One of the great challenges of our time is eradicating hunger and malnutrition. Not only do the consequences of not enough – or the wrong–food cause suffering and poor health, they also slow progress in many other areas of development like education and employment.

The World Health Organisation reports that every day, too many men and women across the globe struggle to feed their children a nutritious meal. In a world where we produce enough food to feed everyone, 795 million people – one in nine – still go to bed on an empty stomach each night. Even more – one in three – suffer from some form of malnutrition.

Hunger can positively impact our economies, health, education, equality and social development. It’s a key piece of building a better future for everyone. Additionally, with hunger limiting human development, we will not be able to achieve the other sustainable development goals such as education, health and gender equality.

Healthwise, major progress has been made in several areas, including in child and maternal health as well as in addressing HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. Maternal mortality has fallen by almost 50 percent since 1990, measles vaccines have averted nearly 15.6 million deaths since 2000 and 13.6 million people were able to access antiretroviral therapy by the end of 2014.

Ultimately, to save this planet, everyone is needed in whatever capacity is available. The rich man’s physical cash and the poor man’s physical efforts are highly essential. As investors pump in money, implementers and beneficiaries too might take up the personal responsibility not to waste or destroy infrastructures for the greater good of all.

Also, it will be primarily the responsibility of countries. Reviews of progress will need to be undertaken regularly in each country, involving civil society, business and representatives of various interest groups. At the regional level, countries will share experiences and tackle common issues, while on an annual basis, at the United Nations, the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF),  they will take stock of progress at the global level, identifying gaps and emerging issues, and recommending corrective action.

UNLEASHLAB2017: 35 Nigerians join global innovators in Denmark to solve SDGs

The largest gathering of young global innovators has started in Denmark to proffer scalable solutions to seven of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) before the year 2030 deadline of the United Nations (UN).

Organised by a European organization, UNLEASH, the global innovation lab brings 1000 professionals and global change makers from 129 countries for an integrated and scalable solution to the SDGs starting with achieving Good Health & Well-being for all, End Poverty, provide affordable & Clean Energy, Quality Education, Clean Water & Sanitation, Sustainable Cities & Communities and proactive Climate action.

It would be recalled that for the United Nations (UN), the 2030 agenda is a plan of action for people, the Planet and posterity. The 17 SDGs and 169 targets demonstrate the scale and ambition of this new universal agenda as they seek to build on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and complete what these did not achieve.

Among these professionals are 35 innovative Nigerians whose works have been based on addressing the Goals.

Helen Nneka Okpala, a Librarian at Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, who is also a SAP Solution Architect, ESEFA Lecturer as well as YALI green Champion, noted that she plans to establish a Climate Change Club in Nigerian Schools in order to instill the knowledge of a better society in the minds of students at the higher institutions.

Also, Oyewole Gbeminiyi who currently running his PhD Research in Industrial and Systems Engineering in South Africa said that he applied so that he could learn and relearn the new and eco-friendly ways of production in order to help save the planet from climate change.

Gbeminiyi was admitted to the Sustainable Production and Consumption theme for UNLEASH.

While speaking with The Nation’s correspondence in Hillerod, Denmark, Chiamaka Nwachukwu, a 500L student of the College of Health, University of Lagos (UNILAG), shared her insight as regards what she desires to make out of the innovation lab.

According to her, “I want to build a strong network of innovative people and develop a worth-while idea as well as execute it.”

Adebisi Adenipekun, a Pharmacist and President of Light House Global Health Initiative said: “Here in #UNLEASHLAB2017, I want to be able to create a solution to help solve supply chain and drug distribution system challenges in Nigeria.”

Adenipekun stressed that although the initiative is targeting Nigeria, it is expected to be scalled to address same issue in other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa based on the level of success recorded in Nigeria.

Other Nigerians on the quest to save the world starting from Nigeria include Adepeju Salu, Obi Nnewuike, Sandra Onwuekwe, Mo Thompson and Olusaola Amusan.

Others include Boris Nwachukwu, Laz Ude Eze, Olusegun Olukoya, Amb Uju Silver, Abubakar Bashir, Abiola Ajala, Gbemisola Osaduwa, Chinenye Ezeakor to mention a few.

Among these 35 Nigerians, only 30 are currently schooling or working in Nigeria, whose academic and (or) professional efforts are geared towards a sustainable society. Two others live in Kenya, two are working and studying in South Africa while the other one stays in the United Kingdom (UK).

Senate should be honoured – Lawal

The Chairman APC Scandinavia and a Global Affair Analyst, Ayoola Lawal, has said that the recent trend of refusal by the government appointees to honour invitations by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on issues regarding national interest is inimical to our nascent democracy.

Lawal made this observation in an exclusive interview with The Nation recently, adding that it is a common practice across the globe for the parliament to extend an invite for clarifications.Thou some might see it to be part of a learning process, however, we most very careful in our democratic context.

According to him, although some people might see it to be part of a learning process, “however, we most very careful in our democratic context.”

Quoting Polity IV index, the APC Scandinavian chief noted that Nigeria is a democracy by all standard but It will be hard to be a full democracy if such acts are not discouraged and discarded in our nascent democratic setting.

    Ayoola Lawal, Chairman, APC Scandinavia
    Lawal

“No matter the perception of individuals about one another as a citizen and office holder, the Senate as an institution must be protected and honoured in all ramifications.

“This institution must be treated with dignity and honour irrespective of the characters involved, I mean office holder.

“We must bear in mind that appointments and office terms are transient but the Senate is an institution that will definitely outlive every individual.

“It is the fulcrum of any democracy and the voice of the citizenry, thus, it will be in the best interest of Nigerians and our nascent democracy if our lawmakers could further educate themselves on their oversights responsibilities and proper understanding of the red lines.

And also a pride for Nigerians both home and in the diaspora seeing our Federal/State lawmakers doing us proud by concentrating energy, time and resources on people oriented debates and bills rather than wasting resources on bell and whistles of real national issues.

A quick result to judiciary intervention on a mere invitation of government appointees and corporate organisations by the Senate on issues of national concerns should be outrightly condemned and law enacts against such to prevent people that might what to explore undue legal avenue to delay justice and transparency.

  • Beauty clinic to clean wrinkles, frown lines launched in Lagos

Beauty clinic to clean wrinkles, frown lines launched in Lagos

The president and founder of Bohus Biotech AB, a Swedish biotechnology company Chief Daniel Chuks Ogbonnaya in partnership with Mahesh Vaswani, Managing Director, Eskay Industries has launched a world class Beauty Clinic in Lagos, Nigeria, Damesh.

The Beauty Clinic, which is located at Victoria Island, is the first of its kind in Nigeria, helping to take out frown lines, enhancing jaw-lines, cheek contouring, labial commissure, lips enlargement, face filler among others, using natural herbs.

The launch witnessed the announcement of an anti-ageing cream, Hyamin produced by Bohus Biotech AB in Sweden, which is suitable for anyone from age 30 upwards who desires to maintain a smooth, childhood face. Also announced at the launch is the new dermal filler created from the original Swedish hyaluronic acid, Decoria.

Speaking about the products from Bohus Biotech AB, Dagana Mdalala, a specialist in filler at the company observed that there is no other natural product that can fill out wrinkles, frown lines, clean injury scars, among other things like the product.

According to Mdalala, no one is ugly, adding that with the launch of the beauty clinic at Victoria Island in Lagos, people don’t have to travel to Dubai, the United States, etc. for facial beauty and treatment.

Speaking after a practical demonstration of nose shaping in the presence of everyone, the filler specialist noted that the facial treatments can be reversed after 6 months. She further stated that no form of make-up can be applied on the face until after 24hours to allow the process stay.

Confirming the healthiness of the products as against undergoing a plastic surgery which in most cases is for cosmetic purpose, Chief Ogbonnaya said: “When you perform an operation, there is a risk that something can go wrong. That, you don’t have with filling when you use the filler products. It is just a procedure.

“All you do is go in with the needle, subtle, you don’t go deep, blow it up with the substance, hyaluronic acid, which is already there, it is only that it is given up, it is given away. And you fill it. That is it. You don’t run any risk of infection or otherwise.

“My advice to Nigerians who are considering taking plastic surgery if it is worth the risk if it has to so with minor wrinkle fillers, scar cleaning because every operation has its risk,” adding that this is the only Beauty Clinic in Nigeria that can do such.

“I am hundred per cent sure that this is going to be a success because Nigerians are travelling to Dubai, I know that, people are going to England and the States for operation, I know this. They will pay the air tickets, pay the hotel bills and now pay for the treatment, why not do it at home and by so doing, contribute to the economic growth of the country as the money circulates within.”

On the other hand, Mahesh said that it took Chief Ogbonnaya over 15 years to convince him of the safety, quality and reliance of the products.

“The best thing about this partnership is the quality. There is no compromise on quality. We have been in this business for over 20 years and the quality is there.

“What I like in him (Chief Ogbonnaya) is the attitude and when I visited him at the company in Sweden, I saw the quality standard he has and he is willing to bring the same quality of Europe to Nigeria. That is a right attitude for him to think of that.

“For ten to fifteen years, he has been after me for a partnership but I was not convinced until I went to see his place,” Mahesh said.

In her contribution, Mary Brakner, a.k.a Yeye Oge, observed that the launch of the Beauty Clinic is apt since Nigerians are being encouraged to spend money on local products and service to service the Naira as against travelling to other countries for such services or products.

“This kind of Beauty Clinic is something meant to enhance the economy of the country because many Nigerians travel to U.S. Italy, even Dubai to do these facial treatments and we have brought down here to Nigeria.

“So, instead of going out there to spend money, you can spend in your country to build the economy.”

Mahesh noted that part of the future plans is to be able to produce the beauty products in Nigeria with the same quality to help employment in Nigeria, adding that the clinic is expected to have an annex across the country anytime soon, starting with Abuja and Port Harcourt.

Hyamin E is a silky and nourishing face cream, including hyaluronic acid, designed to smoothen and protect your skin and to fight the visible signs of aging.

Hyamin SBT is a rich daily moisturizer that will keep your skin moist and supple as well as fight the visible signs of aging. Hyamin SBT contains a unique combination of hyaluronic acid and sea buckthorn oil.

Both products Hyamin E and Hyamin SBT are based on the natural substance hyaluronic acid which, thanks to its unique water-absorbing properties, is the ideal moisturiser. Hyaluronic acid lubricates the tissues of the skin and supports cell function. This contributes to the prevention and smoothing-out of wrinkles and provides long lasting moisture to the skin.

Present at the event include Tosin Buknor, Celebrity On-Air Personality (OAP) at Top Radio, Moriam Musa, and Tewa Onasanya of Exqusitie Magazine.

  • Over five million Syrians without water for days

Over five million Syrians without water for days

The Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM) in Syria has said the bombing of the Ain el Fijah water facility in Wadi Barada on December 24 has left over 5 million people without fresh, running water for the past 30 days.

UOSSM in a statement lamented the growing concerns over a health epidemic with a sharp rise in severe gastrointestinal cases, according to a doctor from Ibn Nafis Hospital in Damascus. The price for a box of six water bottles has skyrocketed to 1000 Syrian Pounds.

The NGO decried the rate at which a fierce bombardment continue to affect the villages of Wadi Barada.

According to a representative from the Wadi Barada Media Council, on Friday one medical staff was killed, the executive director of the medical council was wounded, and an ambulance was targeted and destroyed by artillery shelling as it was transporting the wounded through an area supposedly under a ceasefire agreement.  The continued targeting of Wadi Barada with heavy artillery and barrel bombings has led to more damage to the Ain el Fijah water facility.
    Syria water
A doctor from Damascus said: “We are very concerned that over 5 million people in Damascus have not had access to clean water for a month. The situation could lead to a catastrophe as the risk of hepatitis A, cholera and parasitic diseases rise due to a large population using contaminated water. Water is life and people need to have this basic human necessity to survive. We are concerned that we are not able to access people in besieged areas. We have a medical staff member who walks for 8 ½ miles to communicate the situation in Wadi Barada with us.  This is absolutely unacceptable.”

While the people of Aleppo have been evacuated from the besieged area, many people throughout Syria are suffering greatly, with no access to food, water or medical care. A lack of communication and information from these areas has made it extremely difficult to perform needs assessments, assess medical facility capacity, and receive accurate numbers of civilians injured and killed from daily attacks. The lives of hundreds of thousands in besieged areas are still in danger.

In Deir Ezzor thousands of civilians are trapped in the crossfire. The shortage of doctors in the area has left many without any access to medical care.

Dr. Khaula Sawah, CEO of UOSSM USA said, “Hundreds of thousands of lives are still in danger and we must not forget them. Wadi Barada is the new Aleppo,  with a brutal besiegement and a brutal bombardment of the area. Many are being wounded in these attacks and we have no way of getting to them. They are living without the basic necessities of life including water, food and access to medical care. This is a denial of basic human rights and is unacceptable. We call on the international community to ensure water facilities in Wadi Barada are repaired immediately, and humanitarian aid is delivered to civilians in Wadi Barada, Deir Ezzor, and in other besieged areas throughout Syria.”

UOSSM is hopeful that the meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan today will usher in the long term peace the people of Syria so greatly deserve. UOSSM urges the international community and the UN to send international observers and ‘Blue Helmets’ to conflict areas in Syria to ensure civilians are protected.
