Ex-ref Coote gets two-month ban  over Klopp remarks

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been given an eight-week suspension and told to attend an education programme over abusive words he used about former Liverpool head coach Jürgen Klopp.

Coote was charged by the Football Association in June after the comments about Klopp came to light in a video circulated on social media last November. The FA said he had subsequently admitted the charge.

Coote’s misconduct was defined as an aggravated breach under the FA’s rules because there was a reference to Klopp’s nationality.

Coote was sacked by Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) last December, a month after the video filmed in July 2020 came to light.

PGMOL said in confirming Coote’s dismissal last December that his position had become “untenable.”

In it, Coote is heard saying it had been “s—” to be fourth official at a Liverpool match in the summer of 2020, describing Klopp as a “German c—“. He also said Klopp was “f—— arrogant.”

When the FA charged him over the Klopp comments in June, the governing body said Coote would face no further action in regard to separate allegations of gambling misconduct, which he had strenuously denied. The FA said those allegations had been fully investigated.

Coote was banned by European football’s governing body UEFA in February until June 30, 2026 after a different video emerged of him snorting a white powder through a bank note while in Germany for last summer’s Euros.

In January, Coote came out as gay in an interview with the Sun and said that a lifelong struggle to hide his sexuality had contributed to the rant about Klopp, and to his drug use.

“My sexuality isn’t the only reason that led me to be in that position. But I’m not telling an authentic story if I don’t say that I’m gay and that I’ve had real struggles with hiding that,” he said.

“I hid my emotions as a young ref and I hid my sexuality as well — a good quality as a referee but a terrible quality as a human being. And that’s led me to a whole course of behaviours.”

Coote’s formal response to the FA charge was detailed in the regulatory commission’s written reasons which were published alongside the confirmation of the sanctions imposed.

He accepted his words about Klopp were “crass, inappropriate and unworthy of the role that he held within the game” and asked the commission to accept that his decision not to attend the hearing was not made out of avoidance, but due to his mental state.

Coote said the words did not respect his true view of Klopp, for whom he had always had a deep professional respect.

The panel wrote: “DC [Coote] stated that he felt an immense sense of shame. He had lost a career that formed the very core of his identity. He had lost all his income and the media attention had deepened his sense of humiliation and despair.

“He was trying to piece his life back together, from a place of near total collapse.”

FA bans ex-Premier League David Coote for Klopp video

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been given an eight-week suspension by the Football Association for comments made about ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on social media.

Coote, who was sacked by the Premier League in December 2024, has been further sanctioned by the FA for an “aggravated breach” of rule E3.2, because of the reference he made to Klopp’s nationality in the video.

The clip, which was filmed around July 2020, was leaked online in November 2024.

    Coote admitted the charge.

The FA’s written reasons for the verdict said Coote expressed “deep remorse” and acknowledged his comments were “crass and inappropriate”.

As well as his suspension, Coote must undergo a mandatory face-to-face education programme.

The 42-year-old was initially suspended in November 2024 when the online clip showed him making derogatory comments about Klopp and Liverpool.

He was sacked a month later by Premier League referees’ body the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following an investigation into his conduct.

Coote was also banned in February by Uefa from officiating in European competition until 30 June 2026.

A video – separate to the one in which he made reference to Klopp’s nationality – emerged in November of Coote sniffing a white powder when he was on duty at Euro 2024, which is organised by Uefa.

He revealed in January that he was gay, and had hidden his sexuality during his professional career through fear of abuse.

Coote, who did not attend the hearing, said he thought he was speaking in a “private” setting when he made the comments about Klopp and Liverpool.

In June, Coote was cleared of any gambling misconduct following claims that he discussed issuing a yellow card to a player prior to a match.

However, Coote accepted that the video in which he made remarks about Klopp, which was filmed after the UK emerged from the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, was “likely to cause hurt and reputational damage” once it entered the public domain.

He said the pandemic and the years since had significantly impacted his mental health.

Premier League referee David Coote has been sacked by English soccer referees’ body PGMOL, after their investigation found his actions to be in serious breach of his contract.

Coote had been suspended last month after a video circulated on social media showing the official allegedly abusing Liverpool and former manager Jurgen Klopp and after a full investigation, his position has been deemed untenable.

“Following the conclusion of a thorough investigation into David Coote’s conduct, his employment with PGMOL has been terminated today with immediate effect,” the PGMOL statement said yesterday.

The Football Association also launched an investigation after Coote’s initial suspension on Nov. 11, and two days later PGMOL said they were taking fresh allegations very seriously.

The Sun published a video which the newspaper said showed Coote appearing to snort white powder during his time working as a match official at Euro 2024, and UEFA also launched an investigation having suspended the 42-year-old.

On Nov. 27, the FA said they were investigating allegations that Coote had discussed booking a player the day before a game with a friend, which the referee denied.

“Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare,” the PGMOL statement added.

Coote has the right to appeal the decision.

Coote, 42, was suspended by the PGMOL (the Professional Game Match Officials Limited) on 11 November pending a full investigation after a video allegedly showing him making derogatory comments about Liverpool and the club’s former manager Jurgen Klopp was circulated on social media.

A further investigation was opened two days later after the Sun published photos it says were taken during this summer’s European Championship, alleging that they appear to show Coote sniffing a white powder through a rolled up US bank note.

England’s Football Association has launched an investigation into David Coote after the Premier League official was suspended by referees’ body the PGMOL for allegedly abusing Liverpool and their former manager Juergen Klopp.

The video, which has not been verified by Reuters, allegedly shows Coote making derogatory comments about the Anfield club and German boss Klopp, who left the Premier League side at the end of last season.

A match official since 2018, Coote was suspended by the PGMOL “with immediate effect pending a full investigation” on Monday.

Premier League referee Coote suspended over alleged video

Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended after a video allegedly showing him making derogatory comments about Liverpool and the club’s former manager Jurgen Klopp was circulated on social media.

Refereeing body PGMOL says the suspension comes into force with immediate effect and is pending a full investigation.

The video, widely shared on social media, has not been verified by the BBC. It is unclear when it was filmed or its authenticity.

Coote, 42, refereed Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Aston Villa on Saturday. He is one of the Premier League’s most-experienced officials and has been refereeing matches in the top flight since 2018.

The video being shared appears to refer to a Premier League match that Coote officiated between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which finished 1-1.

Klopp criticised Coote after the match, saying the referee failed to give fouls for challenges made on Liverpool’s players.

Referees are required to inform PGMOL of the club they support.

Coote, from Nottingham, is registered as a Notts County fan and is therefore unable to officiate County or Nottingham Forest matches.

PGMOL says it will not be making further comment on the case until its investigation is completed.

    What happened against Burnley?
With their first Premier League title secured, Liverpool’s aims in July 2020 had switched to becoming the first club to win every single home game during the course of the season.

The Reds were on a 24-match winning run at Anfield, which had given them a 25-point lead over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

In addition, Klopp’s side were hoping to become the second team to amass 100 points during a 38-game Premier League season, matching Manchester City’s achievement in the 2017-18 campaign.

Andrew Robertson gave Liverpool the lead against the Clarets before Jay Rodriguez equalised to give the visitors a share of the spoils.

At full-time, Klopp appeared to argue with Coote and his officials on the pitch.

“The referee let lots of challenges go so it was clear that if the ball comes into the box it was dangerous. They did what they are good at and I respect that,” said Klopp after the match.

“We were angry with the referee but we have to criticise ourselves first for not finishing the game.”

Liverpool lost their next fixture against Arsenal, which ended their hopes of reaching 100 points.
