Omosede Igbinedion dazzles at sister’s wedding

If there is one thing the Igbinedions are famous for, it is their bevy of beautiful daughters who have captured the hearts of many men and the imagination of others. Among them, few are as famous as dazzling Omosede whose every public move is a source of gossip for the rumour mill.

Last week, she was the cynosure of all eyes as one of her younger sisters tied the nuptial knot in a spectacular ceremony. Omosede dazzled watchers at the event with her composure and glittering attire as she went about to make sure everything went without a hitch. The way she carried herself during the event sent tongues wagging and left many wondering if wedding is still a part of her own future.

Although she is currently unmarried, Omosede, daughter of the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, is very much in demand. She was once happily married to Prince Aven Akenzua, son of the Enogie of Obayanfo, but the marriage crashed like a house built on sand. Since then, the mother of one has been rebuilding her life and rebuffing all offers of a romantic nature, perhaps wary of being burnt again by the fires of ill-fated love.

The ex-paramour of Liberian ex-soccer star George Weah is now focusing her energy on her business. Though some little birds have intimated that she’s into a new sizzling romance, no one seems to know anything for sure.

  • Iheanacho dazzles in first Flying Eagles training session

Iheanacho dazzles in first Flying Eagles training session

Manchester City golden boy, Kelechi Iheanacho, was at his impressive best in his first training session with the Flying Eagles of Nigeria ahead of the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

In his first training session, the 18-year-old nutmegged his colleagues during a passing session (known as the ‘rondo’) and during mini-pitch training his dribbling ability saw him wriggle out of tight positions with ease much to the delight of his teammates.

He appears to have also developed physically as he was very strong in tackles and held onto the ball despite pressure – a remarkable improvement from his past nature of getting brushed off the ball easily.

Despite the exhaustion of the long trip he had to arrive New Zealand from Manchester his showing in the cold conditions in New Plymouth proved his fitness is at its best as Nigeria prepare to take on Brazil in their opening game on June 1.

However, the Dubai 2013 U-17 golden ball winner will need to do more of the same if he is to force his way into the starting line-up for the Brazil game as reports suggest the team has already been selected in his absence.

  • ‘Messi dazzles when he plays’

    ‘Messi dazzles when he plays’

Lionel Messi’s is a “reflection of God’s perfection”, according to well-known nun and Barcelona supporter Sister Lucia Caram, who commented that Cristiano Ronaldo is not the devil despite his “cocky and unfriendly attitude”.

Messi’s claim to be the best footballer in the world has taken a knock over the past two years as Ronaldo, his Real Madrid rival, has won back-to-back Ballons d’Or.

Despite Barca underperforming in 2014, the forward elicited praise for captaining Argentina to the World Cup final and has scored an amazing 31 goals in 29 games for the Catalans this season.

“For me the evidence for the existence of God is manifested in goodness and beauty, and when I see Messi play I see that,” Sister Lucia Caram, who is from Argentina but has been based in Spain for over two decades, told Sport.

“One looks entranced, like by a beautiful painting or a sunset, when one faces Messi. I’m not saying he’s God, but he’s a reflection of God’s perfection. He dazzles everyone.”

She was also critical of Ronaldo’s attitude and demeanour in comparison to Messi’s, but the nun stopped short of suggesting the Madrid forward has satanic motivations.

“Is Messi an angel and Ronaldo the devil? Well Messi has the virtue of being a great player but he is also a good person,” he added. “He is humble.

“Cristiano plays football very well, but he has a very cocky and unfriendly attitude. He’s not my greatest enemy, I think he plays very good football, but there is not harmony in him.”

The Christianity follower took one final dig at Ronaldo – as well as Barca forward Luis Suarez and referencing Arda Turan’s recent infamous boot throw – in her criticism at the idolisation of footballers in modern society.

“I worry that it’s a weakness for people to defend their idols against the indefensible,” Sister Lucia Caram continued.

“You cannot defend Suarez’s bite or applaud the throwing of a shoe at a linesman, and the attitude of Cristiano Ronaldo recently [for his red card last month] was not good.”

Martins dazzles in training for Sounders

Nigeria international striker, Obafemi Martins seems to have picked up where he left off last season, as he has lit up Seattle Sounders training with his skills since he joined up with the team.

In a write up posted on the official website of the club, the exploits of the former Inter Milan striker was noted:

“If these first few training sessions are any indication, Obafemi Martins will score a lot of goals this season.

“Every touch is crisp, electric, powerful. Just all the right stuff. At one point, he had the ball, was backing out of the area with a defender on either shoulder and like lightning, spun on a dime and juked them both out of their jocks.

“Different class, Oba is. Remains evident to start this year. Can’t wait to see what he and Clint can do together with a bit of preseason work under their collective attacking belt.”

Martins struggled in his first season at Washington with injuries, but exploded into club record form in the second.

  • Opara dazzles in MLS

    Opara dazzles in MLS

Portland Timbers striker, Bright Dike recently made millions of Nigerians sit up and take notice of the Major League Soccer (MLS) when he impressed for the Super Eagles in a friendly game against Catalunya on January 2.

With many expecting an experimental Nigeria side to suffer a heavy beating in the hands of a side featuring nine players of the much feared FC Barcelona side, Dike scored a brilliant goal in the 55th minute to stun spectators at Cornella El Prat.

Dike narrowly missed out on selection for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations but Nigerians are now begining to see the MLS in completely different light.

Former Inter Milan striker, Obafemi Martins lent further credence to the rising profile of the MLS when he bought out his contract at La Liga club, Levante to join the Seattle Sounders.

Another Nigerian, Ikenna “Ike” Opara is now turning heads in the MLS with big and consistent performances for Sporting Kansas City.

The 24-year-old, who began his professional football education at Cary Clarets in 2008, proceeded to join the San Jose Earthquakes where he scored three goals in 35 appearances between 2010 and 2012.

He joined his present club at the start of the year and has already scored twice in eight appearances in the regular season. His goal tally this term is hugely commendable as he is a centre-back.

With the games coming thick and fast for the Wake Forest University graduate, he has taken his time to voice his sentiments at his present situation with Kansas City.

“It’s nice to be with a club that wants you,” he said at the club’s weekly press conference.

The young centre-back’s first three MLS seasons were marked by injury, disappointment and he finally seems to have found the perfect match following his alliance with Kansas City. The club’s sporting director, Peter Vermes believes the capture of Opara from the San Jose Earthquakes was a masterstroke.

“I knew that we needed another guy like him because of (Concacaf) Champions League and the US Open Cup (where Kansas City’s regular centre-back, Matt Besler has been representing the United States).

“There was no way our players could continue to play game after game. At some point, they’re going to break down. We needed that extra central defender for sure,” Vermes said.

Opara is looking to grab his big chance with both hands as he looks to help the Sporting Kansas City achieve great things this season.

“When I had the opportunity to move, it was pretty much a no-brainer. I knew I was leaving San Jose one way or another. I knew it was time for me to move on. I knew Sporting was available as an option, and for me it was looking at all the scenarios. Being here was an easy decision,” he said.

Opara has represented the United States at under-20 and under-23 levels but is eligible to play for Nigeria at senior level.
