    D’banj hosts album-listening on yacht

D’banj recently hosted an exclusive album-listening event aboard a luxurious yacht in Lagos.

For the event, D’Banj gathered a select group of media professionals to experience his latest work in an intimate setting.

The 90-minute session offered a first listen to his recently released 13-track album, which marks a significant milestone—20 years since his debut in the Nigerian music industry.

As the yacht gently cruised along the Lagos coastline, D’banj, known affectionately as Bangalee or the Koko Master, captivated his audience with nostalgia and fresh sounds.

Dressed in his signature style—a designer cap, iconic sunglasses, oversized baggy trousers, and a designer top—D’banj embodied the essence of his artistic journey while unveiling a new chapter in his musical career.

Speaking on the album, D’banj revealed that the production process started in 2021 stating that he wanted to release a new album in 2020.

“This song ‘Serious’ was created in 2021, I knew that I wanted to drop an album and I’ve been talking about it since 2020 but I also knew that for me to drop an album, I wanted to tie it to something and that time I think I was just doing 16/17 years (in the industry) and we were just coming out of COVID,’ he disclosed.

“I said to myself that most of my albums came out before the digital era so that’s why I went back and sampled some of my hits because some of these songs we just put them on the platform.

“As twenty years was getting closer pressure set in so I knew that I needed to finish that album by December last year but it didn’t work so most of the remaining were created in January and February.”

In a chat with The Nation Newspaper, D’banj also revealed that Olamide Baddo wrote ‘Koko,’ a seemingly standout track on the album.

“Interestingly, Olamide wasn’t even aware that this year marks my 20th anniversary,” D’banj shared, his excitement evident.

He also named Odumodu Black among the potential collaborators he would love to work with.

As the DJ spun tracks from ‘The Entertainer: The Sequel’ – a nod to his classic 2008 album – the guests on board were transported back to the early days of D’banj’s reign in the Nigerian music scene, yet thrilled by the fresh twists and turns of his new sound.

The atmosphere was electric, with attendees unable to get enough of the blend of old and new, as they danced and sang along to both the latest tracks and D’banj’s timeless hits.

“The energy on that yacht was something else,” one attendee commented. “It felt like we were part of history in the making, seeing D’banj celebrate two decades of music, and still being as relevant and dynamic as ever.”

D’banj’s yacht listening party was a celebration of his legacy, a testament to his staying power, and a tantalising glimpse of what the future holds for the legendary artist.

Speaking in an interview with The Beat FM, Lagos, he said: “Our generation was so hard. If you had a child out of wedlock, your career could just end. But now everybody is just embracing it.

“I am angry. Sometimes I call 2Face to chide him for not encouraging me back then because it is something different when you now see them celebrating with their kids. They are in their 30s and their kids are teenagers.

“But I think it goes beyond people, it goes to your state of mind: Are you mentally and financially ready? You don’t have to have everything in the world, if you’re ready to embrace what is coming to you, I think that is the best.”
