More jobs coming as DBI, Miva Open University partner on advance academic excellence

The Federal Government’-owned Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) and Miva Open University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja, aimed at advancing academic excellence in computer science and creation of more jobs through digital innovation.

The President/CEO of DBI, David Daser, and Vice Chancellor Miva Open University, Prof. Tayo Arulogun, signed the agreement on behalf of their institutions.

Daser commended the dedication and resilience of Arulogun and his team, noting that their commitment to raising academic standards played a key role in making the collaboration possible. This is also expected to make Nigeria a global leader in outsourcing jobs, he added.

“Many MoUs are signed but not implemented. However, we are determined to ensure this one stands the test of time. We value this collaboration and believe it will contribute significantly to the development of Nigeria’s educational system,” Daser stated.

He assured the Miva delegation of DBI’s commitment to ensuring that the partnership achieves its purpose and objectives, adding, “now that the MoU has been signed, we are ready to hit the ground running. DBI is well-equipped and fully prepared to deliver.”

The DBI boss explained that the institute’s campus in Enugu, Abuja, Kano, Lagos, Asaba and Yola have the DBI’s presence, which would be deployed effectively for the partnership.

Daser said: “In our new efforts to improve NID in DBI, all our campuses have DBI’s presence. We really appreciate the openness of your team and efforts, you are doing something inspiring. With this collaboration we are going to add value to our NID program as well as other DBI programmes and your programmes as well. As I said, we want to go far and we will take this collaboration seriously.

Also, Arulogun emphasised the importance of collaboration in Nigeria’s higher education sector. He noted that one of the major challenges facing the country’s universities is the “do-it-alone syndrome,” where institutions attempt to operate in isolation instead of exploring strategic partnerships.

Arulogun, therefore, urged other universities and institutions to embrace collaboration as a means to optimise capacity and enhance academic output.

DBI Head of Learning and Development Unit, Emeka Nzeih, said the purpose of the MoU is to formalise the collaboration between Miva and DBI, that would facilitate enhancement of student education through real-world projects and internships, joint efforts in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship; as well as capacity building for students and staff through training and resource sharing.

The Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) and SBTS Nigeria Limited have concluded arrangements to unveil 150 million dollars in digital infrastructures across the country.

The project, dubbed Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Security Operations Centre (SOC), parades state-of-the-art digital infrastructures for training of Nigerians and providing services to the private and public sectors.

The infrastructure, which started with a pilot study at the headquarters of the Digital Bridge Institute in Abuja, would be replicated in all the centres of the institute in Lagos, Kano, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Rivers State, among others.

The DBI and SBTS projects are expected to generate about 1,050 new jobs at DBI headquarters in Abuja, while over 20,000 would be added subsequently in Lagos, Kano and other centres.

Speaking at the pre-launch and facility tour of the project at the headquarters of DBI in Abuja on Wednesday, the President and CEO of DBI, Mr David Daser, said the pre-launch was more than just the unveiling of new facilities, but “a powerful testament to collaboration, innovation, and our shared vision for a digitally empowered Nigeria.”

He added that the full operations of the centres mean that DBI and SBTS are not only “creating jobs, we are creating skills, resilience, and security.”

The DBI boss commended the Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, for his support and leadership as well as the management of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.

He appealed to the private sector, especially off-takers in the BPO ecosystem, to leverage the services provided by the infrastructure and the skills of the workforce to advance Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

“By outsourcing your business processes to the DBI-SBTS BPO Centre, you not only benefit from top-tier, cost-effective services but also play a direct role in empowering the next generation of digital professionals in Nigeria,” Daser said.

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of SBTS Nigeria Limited, Evelyn Lewis, said the 150 million dollars investments in digital infrastructures would provide services in oil and gas, banking and finance, fraud detection, medical, law, and accounting and cybersecurity sectors.

Lewis said the project aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the areas of skills development, youth empowerment and digital inclusion.

“At SBTS Nigeria, we are proud to unveil this state-of-the-art BPO Centre and Security Operations Centre under the framework of our flagship initiative, the Intelligent Capacity Building Model, or ICBM.

“The ICBM is a strategic model that merges workforce development with real-time technological deployment. It is built not just to train, but to transform, equipping young Nigerians with the high-demand digital and cybersecurity skills needed to compete and thrive in the global digital economy.

“This facility is more than bricks and machines, it is an engine of innovation, job creation, and national development. Through our ICBM program, we will provide a pipeline of skilled professionals who are ready to fill critical roles in cybersecurity, tech support, and digital operations — right here in Abuja, and ultimately, across the nation”, Mr Lewis said.

Lewis described the partnership with DBI as not just “a project, but as a national mission — one that will unlock the immense potential of Nigeria’s human capital to power a secure and sustainable digital economy”.

He said the laboratory has transmission equipment and ultra-modern next-Generation Core Network Switching Centre that give a complete end-to-end telecoms scenario.

“One major benefit of the equipment is that it uses real-world industrial quality components to help students become better prepared for what they will encounter on the job.

“The lab is equally effective for technicians, engineers, field workers and anyone needing further understanding and skills in wireless telecommunications,” he said.

DBI Chairman Mr Titi Omo-Ettu said the inauguration represented a leap in the efforts of the institute to provide qualitative hands with practical telecommunications and ICT training.

Omo-Ettu said the development of skilled workforce across all sectors of the economy had become a national priority.

He said: “We are keenly aware that there is a global shift from natural resources as a basis for national competitiveness to human resources underpinned by knowledge innovation.

“Interestingly, it is also increasingly evident that innovation is not about academic qualifications or certificates, the emphasis is on skills and creative abilities of the individual.”
