  • FUOYE students protest dean’s removal

Students of the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE)  staged an early morning protest on Monday, paralysing activities on the campus. The demonstration was sequel to the delay in the issuance of matriculation numbers to freshers and also against the replacement of Dr. E.O. Adeyemi as the Dean of Students’ Affairs (DSA), whose tenure is supposed to expire next March.

The management appointed former chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Dosu Malomo, as the new DSA, but students rejected the choice, accusing him of extortion.

CAMPUSLIFE gathered that Adeyemi was relieved of the post because of his support for Students’ Union movement.

The protesters displayed various placards, with inscription such as “Give us our matric numbers”, “Adeyemi must complete his tenure in March 2018”, and “We want students’ union on our campus”, among others.

The protesters converged on  the school’s main entrance around 7am, closing the gate. They barricaded the road leading to the school, chanting anti-management songs. They brought a disc jockey, who entertained them while the protest lasted.

The protesters alleged that Dr. Malomo illegally collected N500 each from over 1,590  100-Level students for tutorial classes, which did not hold.

One of the protesters, Samson Oyelowo, said: “We have been clamouring for SUG to be the mouthpiece of students. The management promised to conduct SUG elections before the end of the second semester. But, with the removal of Dr. Adeyemi as the Dean of Students’ Affairs, we believe there is no way we can realise our objective. Dr. Adeyemi is a good man and he has been there for us as the Dean. We believe everything is wrong with his removal.”

The students gave the management a three-week ultimatum to issue matriculation numbers to freshers, threatening to paralyse activities again if their demand was not met before August 19, when the second semester examination will begin.

A 100-Level student, Ogechi Ogbonna, said: “The school ought to have given us our matriculation numbers since March. But, we have not heard anything about it. It would be good if the management generates our matriculation numbers before exam starts.”

  • AAUA students urge NDDC, OSOPADEC on hostel completion

As the accommodation challenges bite harder, the students of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko have called on the leadership of the Federal government Agency, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Ondo State Oil Producing Development Commission (OSOPADEC) to complete the ongoing hostel accommodation in the campus.
It would be recalled, that the two agencies started the construction of the hostel projects few years ago and has been abandoned since 2014.

The student union President urged the leadership of the agencies to help in the completion of the hostels in order to bring more students on campus for accommodation.
He further urged the school management to approach more corporate bodies and private individuals who are willing to build more hostels in the campus.
The Dean of Students Affairs, Dr Bolanle Ogungbamila said the institution is doing everything possible to provide more hostel accommodation for its students.
He said while the university was aware of some of the hardships being faced by students off campus, said no institution would be able to provide accommodation for all its students.
Dr Ogungbamila said in order to monitor and ensure the safety of the students, the management has approved the creation of an off campus student affairs unit.
He said the unit will be saddled with the responsibility of getting the outside hostels accredited and of course interact with the students regularly to know some of the problems they are facing.
