The incident, which occurred at 19, Oshinfolarin Street Bariga, Lagos, also rendered all occupants of the building homeless.

It was learnt that the hoodlums had struck at about 9am, trapped the woman inside her room and set it on fire.

The suspected arsonists, it was gathered, camped behind the deceased’s room to ensure she did not escape.

The latest incident is the second by suspected cultists last week.

It came after a similar incident in Mushin last Tuesday.

According to residents, the arsonists were on a reprisal mission and had stormed the area since Friday night to terrorise people.

While other occupants of the building were said to have escaped with minor injuries, Adefuye who was inside one of the rooms, was burnt beyond recognition.

  • Tragic death of policeman hours to promotion

Tragic death of policeman hours to promotion

His family was eagerly waiting to usher in the New Year because of the good tiding it will bring for its breadwinner. His promotion to inspector was to take effect January 1. But three hours to the New Year, Sergeant sunday Clement, 41, was knocked down by a commercial motorcyclist and he died, BISI OLADELE reports.

All had been set for the New Year celebration. Members of Sergeant Sunday Clement’s family were in high spirits for the double joy which January 1, had in stock for them. It was to be the witness of a New Year and the day the promotion of his bread winner to inspector would have taken effect. But it was not to be.

The late Clement, 41, was a Sergeant with the Highway Patrol in Akinyele Police Division, Ibadan the Oyo State capital. He was one of the drivers in the unit.

His team went on duty on Ijaye/Iseyin Road on the eve of the New Year to wrap up the year when a commercial motorcyclist allegedly knocked him down while he was crossing the road. Within one-and-a-half hours of the accident, Sunday died, terminating the double joy awaiting him and his household last January 1.

His widow, Bola, in an emotional recall of how her heartthrob died on New Year’s eve, said she was at the middle of a church service to usher in the New Year when her phone rang repeatedly. The repeated calls forced her to excuse herself from the church to return the call to her husband’s telephone line that had been calling.

But she was greeted by a strange voice that declared: “This is not your husband. I am his boss. Your husband had an accident a while ago and we have rushed him to a private hospital in Akinyele. Please come over here.”

She continued: “After receiving the call, I didn’t know what to do. I invited one of my friends in the church to accompany me to the hospital. On getting to the hospital, the doctor told me that he had internal bleeding; having fallen on his occiput. The injury on the occiput was deep but the doctor plastered it after applying treatment. He advised us to take him to the University College Hospital (UCH).

“When we got to UCH, they admitted him immediately. The doctors told me that he needed oxygen. Hence, they asked me to go and look for a large amount of money. Then, I came home reluctantly, thinking of the sad incident and where to get such huge amount of money.

“I arrived at home at 1:00 a.m. When I called again, they told me he was responding to treatment.”

But at noon of January 1, Mrs Sunday said her pastor, accompanied by some others, visited her to break the sad news that her husband was dead. They revealed that he actually died before the break of the New Year.

According to her, his colleagues explained to her that her husband initially declined to join them for the duty that evening but later changed his mind to perform the last duty in 2015.

On arriving at the spot where the team operated, they recalled that Mr Sunday led the prayer for the entire team and their operation that night.

“A few minutes later, he crossed the road to the other side to urinate when an oncoming commercial motorcyclist (popularly called okada), knocked him down. It was between 8:00 and 8:00 p.m.” she said.

She revealed that the motorcyclist was a 17-year-old who could not offer anything. He has since been detained.

On what the Oyo State Police Command was doing on the matter, Mrs Sunday said the command had been taking all necessary steps to give him a befitting burial and process his benefits for dying in the course of discharging his duties.

Mrs Sunday described her husband of 13 years as a father to her, their children and his siblings.

“I can’t forget him. He took our welfare (our children and I) very seriously. He was a father, mother-everything to me. I will miss his immense understanding, patience and care. He showed understanding very well,” she said.

Also recalling his brother’s death, Sunday’s younger brother, Mr Godwin Namba-Clement, said it still seems like a dream.

According to him, a friend called him on telephone from Ibadan on January 1 to inform him of his elder brother’s death which he dismissed because it sounded impossible for death to come so suddenly that way. Godwin lives with their parents in their home town, Kachia, Kaduna State.

He said: “On New Year day, after returning from church, a friend called me from Ibadan and told me Sunday was dead. I thought it was a joke. Then, I called my brother’s wife and she confirmed it. I had to travel to Ibadan immediately. His colleagues took me to the scene of the incident. It is still unbelievable.”

Sunday completed his promotion course in September, last year after which he was elevated to the higher rank of Police Inspector. The promotion took effect on January 1, 2016.

Sunday is survived by wife and three children.

Police arrest four for man’s death

Four persons have been arrested in Ondo town, Ondo West Local Government Area for the death of a 48-year-old man, identified as Lawrence Akinsoyinu.

Ismaila Faith (32), Ajakaye Babatunde (27), Ojo Segun (30) and Daniel Samuel (25) allegedly assaulted the deceased at Abana village.

Although the cause of the death is yet to be determined, it was learnt that Akinsoyinu, a farmer and father of two, was allegedly returning from the farm when he sighted the suspects.

They were said to be members of the anti-forestry encroachment task force moving towards his ( Akinsoyinu’s) direction.

Without knowing their motive, the deceased reportedly ran into the bush and the suspects pursued him.

They attacked him and left him for dead. Efforts by some villagers to revive him proved abortive.

  • 70 soldiers sentenced to death by courts-martial, says Falana

70 soldiers sentenced to death by courts-martial, says Falana

Lagos lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) yesterday clarified that 70 soldiers and not 66 were sentenced to death by two military courts-martial last year.

He gave the clarifications in a statement issued in Lagos yesterday in reaction to the claims of the Army Public Relations Officer (PRO), Sani Usman.

The Army PRO said at the weekend that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, had commuted the death sentenced passed on 66 soldiers, who were convicted last year by two courts-martial.

Giving a breakdown of those sentenced to death, Falana said his chamber defended 58 of the convicted soldiers.

“Twelve soldiers were convicted in September 2014 and sentenced to death by a court-martial for demanding for weapons when the General Officer Commanding, the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army, visited a military camp in the war zone while 58 others were convicted and sentenced to death in December by another court-martial for demanding for weapons to fight the insurgents .

“Therefore, the number of soldiers who were sentenced to death by the two courts-martial is 70 and not 66,” he said.

The lawyer gave the names of four convicts, who have been left out of the commuttal of the death sentence to 10 years’ imprisonment as LCP Bankole Taiwo,  LCP Ayodele Olawale, LCP Isiah Osofu and Adebayo Gbenga.

Although the soldiers were charged with mutiny, Falana said the only allegation proved against them at the courts-martial was that they protested the refusal of the military authorities to provide weapons to fight insurgency.

Unlike many soldiers, who deserted the army, he said the convicts were ready to defend the territorial integrity of the country, adding that they only made a legitimate demand for equipment to fight the insurgents who were better equipped and motivated.

He gave further clarification that the second batch of convicts actually fought and defeated the Boko Haram troops at Delwa in Borno State when weapons were eventually made available to them “but for having the temerity to demand for weapons, they were convicted and sentenced to death”.

Urging the Chief of Army Staff to further review the case of the convicted soldiers, Falana said: “In demanding for weapons, the soldiers were exercising their right under Section 179 of the Armed Forces Act, which provides that a soldier could make a complaint to his commanding officer without any fear of punishment for having made a complaint’’.

  • Did anybody go to jail? NIS recruitment: Job, Money or Death!

I remember sharing a bottle of drink with two of my South African friends in Randburg.  I knew the self-acclaimed largest economy in Africa would come to the table for mockery. Dr. Reuben smiled and made a joke about my country-that if he needs to choose a country in the second world, he would request to come as a Nigerian. Very unpleasant statement for me, but had to put up a cool face. He said Nigerians are human beings like any other Americans, Europeans or Asians, but they act like animals. Anything goes and no question is asked in your country, Bimboo. For example, he asked if anybody went to jail after the tragedy that happened in 2014.

I promised myself to revisit this shameless process that took innocent souls,  refresh our minds about it and wake up authority, in case they are still sleeping like my new baby boy, Temidun.

Saturday, the 15th march 2014 was a black Saturday for families whose loved ones set out to take part in the Nigerian immigration Aptitude test but never returned home… Killed in the stampede that ensued.

Most of the applicants were told to arrive the venue as early as 7am but the test was supposedly originally stated for 3pm.

Some lucky job seekers are alive to tell the story. According to our listeners, authorities of National Hospital, Abuja, confirmed seven persons among 67,000 Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) job applicants in the FCT dead.

The applicants had converged at the National stadium, Abuja, one of the venues for the test to fill 5000 vacancies in NIS and many were said to have arrived at the centre before 6a.m.

The service had fixed the test nationwide for 7000 available jobs. However, a Stampede ensued at the FCT  centre about 7a.m, when the screening of candidates was to start for the test scheduled for 4p.m.

Mr. Tayo Hassstrup, the spokesman for the hospital, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that seven, five women and two men were brought in dead and that the bodies had been deposited at the mortuary.

The hospital received some casualties from the stampede from the ongoing Immigration recruitment at the National Stadium.

He said the hospital was stabilizing those brought in unconscious from the stampede, while other casualties had been taken to other hospitals, including Asokoro General Hospital.

While, in Lagos, the thousand of job seekers invited to take an aptitude test by NIS have took control of all access roads to the National Stadium, Lagos. They started chanting anti-government songs and not ready to go home, after all, they have no jobs. So what is the need to return home!

NAN recalls that in 2008, no fewer than 20 people died in various states of the federation during a similar exercise conducted by the ministry of interior for Nigeria Prisons Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and customs Service.

My questions are simple friends! Is it true people paid 1000 naira to apply to die? How much was made from this test? And where is the money? Can we have the list of the applicants that finally got these jobs? I need answers before I visit my friends soon in Randburg this January.

  • Businessman escapes death

It was a lucky day for Ekele Okpara, an Ohiya Umuahia-based business man as he escaped death by the whiskers. He was shot at by unknown gunmen, wounding him in the process.

The victim, who narrated his story to newsmen on his hospital bed said he was returning from a business trip when he saw five men in what looked like uniform of security men standing on a jeep at Bende Road at Nkata Ibeku.

Okpara said he reasoned that the five men standing beside the SUV car were up for something sinister.

He said: “When I saw the five men, my inner mind urged me to stop and turn back, but the other urged me to go ahead as they might be policemen on duty. Probably, if I had obeyed the promptings of my mind, I would not be in this situation.”

The victim said when he approached the men, he heard them shout ‘stop’ and immediately they started shooting and their bullets tore his stomach and his intestines gushed out.

Okpara said when they saw blood gushing out from his stomach, they felt that he has died. They quickly entered into the waiting SUV and sped off.

“I started shouting for help which attracted passersby who took me to the hospital,” he said.

He said his shout attracted a woman who was passing by and who came to his rescue and drove him in his car to a nearby hospital where doctors carried out surgery on him.

He said: “When the woman came close and saw me, I pleaded with her to drive me to any nearby hospital. However, the only problem facing us at that point was that she said that she had never driven an automatic car before, but I encouraged her and told her what to do.”

A close friend of Ekele at the hospital who is also a businessman at Ohiya in Umuahia South who was with him shortly before the incident said having bought kerosene at a filing station, Ekele had asked him to take the kerosene to his (Ekele’s) family for use.

The friend, who spoke to Southeast Report in confidence, said he was saved by providence as he would have been in the car during the time of the incident. “I would have been in the car with him; and I was saved by the special grace of God,” he said.

He explained that several bullets were removed from Ekele’s intestines by the doctors.

“The things that were removed from his stomach could fill a litre of water, including the bullets,” he said.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of Abia State Command of the Nigerian Police, Ezekiel Udeviotu denied any knowledge of the incident, but promised to confirm later.

  • This lady needs N10.95m to avert looming death

EVERY breath that 37-year-old Akuwa Joy Adejo takes draws her closer to the grave. Akuwa Joy may be counting her days on earth. Unless she obtains the sum of N10.95 million ($55, 000) and undergoes a liver transplant as well as umbilical surgery booked for India on before January 15, she will be totally drained of life.

Akuwa, a single woman with no child and a Bachelors of Education (B.Edu (Economics)) holder based in Lagos, until her sickness owned a Coutre because she could not secure a job.

Ms Akuwa is not given to idleness.  She was diagnosed with umbilical hernia and liver failure. She requires liver transplant as well as umbilical surgery to correct the swelling which often leaves her wreathing in pains.

Akuwa, even in her weak state, is doing everything within her might to clutch to life, including taking to the social media through the address, https://www.gofundme.com/m4c5qfa7 and her Facebook Wall, Akuwa Adejo to market her merchandise. In her own little way, she is also sourcing for funds for her operation.

Are you moved to assist? Do reach out through her GSM number 08138421992 or pay into her account with GTBank: Akuwa Joy Adejo, a/c no. 0128095253.

Her family, a close-knit one, has spent much on her upkeep and is still spending, but the family members cannot afford the huge cost required to keep her alive. The family’s gallant efforts have yielded results so far as Akuwa has been evaluated by an India-based hospital, and were told the requirements in financial terms and organ donation.

They learnt that their daughter could not be cut open twice  for the surgeries with very short breaks in between. The doctors advised to have the two surgeries done at the same time.

Her brother has agreed to donate (a part of) his liver. A member of the family will also be travelling with the two to look after them following the surgical procedure.

The required cost of N10.95m  or $55,000 is inclusive of the surgery, accommodation, air tickets and travel arrangements.

Akuwa has until Januay 15 to get these surgeries done. The last time she went to India, the doctors told her that her liver performed below five percent of capacity.

As a matter of fact, Akuwa has less than one month to perform the surgeries and prevent the premature consequence of death

  • Overhaul of ‘death’ sector

This is a column that seeks to mould, shape societal values and to protect the interests of consumers, citizens and touch other broader relevant topics under the column: ‘TRUE VALUE 360’. It is an interactive column as suggestions, complaints; day to day experiences are welcome.

This week’s edition is STARVATION AND THE COMMON MAN

Some analysts have propounded various theories about Nigeria being an accident waiting to happen or an accident happened already or that we will break up by a particular date etcetera, etcetera but we thank God we are still standing today and will keep standing by His Grace. One of the reasons given is that Nigeria comprises of unlikely bedfellows occasioned by forced marriage of various tribes. Many issues are begging for attention but today we are looking at the topic: STARVATION AND THE COMMON MAN.

There is a saying that a hungry man is an angry man. A hungry, angry man will never be reasonable in action and thoughts that is if he can think at all. Nigeria’s business economy to date is driven by government policies and because of the 2015 transition/ change of government process, a lot of business decisions were put on hold which had the ripple effect of making the year very hard on the citizenry. There is cash squeeze in the economy and investors are threading carefully to venture into new grounds; there has been massive disengagement in public and banking sector for various reasons, the private sector and small business enterprises are also not left out of the hopefully temporary financial and economic pains.

Citizens without steady income have become desperate and have devised various deadly means to survive. Lagos in particular has been witnessing serious impunity in recent times. The masses get handouts or income from the middle class but the middle class are also broke at the moment, reason why the hungry masses are resorting to terrorizing citizens.

Traffic jam in Lagos has reached an unprecedented scale and you cannot guess or predict the duration of trips to any destination in Lagos anymore.

It is a common daily occurrence for citizens to be robbed in these traffic jams with individuals losing personal belongings such as handsets, windscreens, handbags etc in recent times. These acts are being perpetuated by petty thieves and idle touts who have no means of feeding; some of them will ordinarily not go this route but out of desperation they become criminals as unemployment rate is one of the major issues we have not been able to deal with.

It is also common to find young men in their middle to late twenties ogling at women who are old enough to be their mothers and even grandmothers, not out of love interest but so as to get some extra feeding or survival income. These set abound everywhere from concerts, to salons, clubs and even on the streets. Our remaining values are being eroded at the twinkling of an eyelid; let us save our youths as they are our future.

Yes, we are overwhelmed with various urgent issues, but this menace will only escalate if a temporary solution is not found immediately.

If we cannot resort to the Bread and Circuses option, and it may be unrealistic to attain 80- 100% employment at the moment; we should endeavor to provide our own version of succor to the unemployed.  Provision of at least a meal per day (without the circus) should be considered for the unemployed in every local government either through the local government authorities or through a special agency that will ensure that the meals get to the right persons, the country can afford it. This will reduce crime rate and petty robbery. This will also create employment for new sets of personnel.

Of course, I am not making a case for lawlessness or male prostitution here; to me it is an aberration, it is better to provide an immediate survival alternative than to leave the menace to come back to haunt us all. We already have enough on our hands in combating sophisticated crime, let’s not increase the number.

    Reactions are welcome.
