  • Lekki-Epe Expressway: Tolling begins at TP2 December 16

Lekki-Epe Expressway: Tolling begins at TP2 December 16

BARING any last minute hitch, tolling at the second toll plaza on the Lekki-Epe Expressway corridor will commence on December 16, as motorists are expected to pay their toll at the Conservation Plaza, situated along the Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe Expressway between Chevron HQ and Oluwa Nisola House, Lekki Concession Company (LCC) has said.

The Conservation Plaza, which corresponds to the completed 9 km road section from Marwa Bus Stop to Ikota Bridge, has been in operation since January this year. Road users, however, have so far not been charged any toll for using that road section.

This, it was gathered, was to allow the Lagos State Government more time to complete the construction of the 3.6 km alternative route that provides a bypass around the Conservation Plaza, so that road users not wishing to pay the tolls can exercise the option not to do so.

The Lagos State Government has now completed the new alternative route, which can be accessed from the expressway by turning into Chevron Drive from Chevron Roundabout, then turning right after the Chevron HQ Complex, following the road running behind the Chevron HQ Complex, past the Conservation Plaza, the Scintilla Events Centre, and through Poroku Village, and eventually emerging back onto the expressway just before Oluwa Nisola House.

Toll tariffs at the Conservation Plaza will be the same as that of the Admiralty Circle Plaza located near the Oniru Estate – N50 for motorcycles; N80 for authorised commercial danfo buses; N120 for saloon cars and tricycles; N150 for SUVs, minibuses, and pickup trucks; N250 for light trucks and 2-axle buses; and N350 for heavy trucks and buses with 2 or more heavy axles.

Road users will be able to immediately reduce the standard toll tariffs that they pay by 5% and 10% if they opt to pay using the SwiftPass Anonymous card and the eTag (including the accompanying SwiftPass Plus card) respectively.

Users of the eTag also exclusively benefit from the Frequent User Discount, which offers further discounts off the tariffs (up to 70%) based on the number of times that the road user passes through the toll plazas each month.

The eTag and the SwiftPass can be obtained by registering for them at any of the LCC Customer Service Centres located at the Admiralty Circle Plaza and the Conservation Plaza, or through other outlets such as banks.

Approximately 16.5 km of the rehabilitated and upgraded expressway has been completed to date, including the construction of the new Falomo On-Ramp; expansion of ExxonMobil Bridge from 4 to 8 lanes; new roundabouts; new pedestrian overhead bridges; new drainage systems; new underground service ducts; and new street lights and traffic lights.

In addition to the routine operation and maintenance of the new road infrastructure, LCC has promised to offer complementary 24/7 convenience services, including breakdown recovery services, customer service helpline, armed police security patrols, ambulance call-out, traffic management support, and environmental management support.

  • Madam MicCom for burial December 22

The remains of the late Mrs. Comfort Ponnle will be buried Saturday, December 22 in Ada, Osun State.  Night of Tribute will hold on Thursday, December 20 and Christian wake keep on Friday, December 21 in Ada, Osun State.

In our story on the late Mrs. Ponnle published yesterday, we erroneously wrote that she was to be buried yesterday.

The deeds of the late Mrs. Comfort Olufunke Ponnle in her 67 years on earth are enough reasons for those she left behind to forget their sorrows.

From her days in the civil service at the old Oyo State and Osun State, the late Mrs. Ponnle gave a good account of herself. As a member of the Planning Committee for the setting up of LAUTECH in the old Oyo State, Council member of The Polytechnic Ibadan, in the Old Oyo State, member, Committee for the Reorganisation of Technical Education in Osun State and  Member/Vice Chairman, Board of Trustees, UNDP-Osun State Human Development Fund, diligence was her watchword. It was to diligence she owed her Fellowship of both Yaba College of Technology and Federal Polytechnic, Ede, as well as the Fellowship of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

The late Mrs. Ponnle and her husband spent the last four decades empowering people and showing them the way to make their ways better.  One of their phenomenal contributions to nation building was through the institutionalisation of a viable annual scholarship scheme – MicCom Foundation for Educational Development (MIFED).

Apart from MIFED, she also supported her husband to contribute to the society in the form of several corporate philanthropic activities.  She also engaged in several personal commitments that put smiles in the faces of so many individuals, families and institutions.

Born on November 22, 1944, in Ibadan, Oyo State, to the late Chief Salami Oluyole Balogun and the late Alhaja Humani Atinuke Asabi, she grew up in Ibadan.  She had her elementary education in Ibadan and lived most part of her early life with her late uncle, Chief Ajayi Fabunmi, the Odole Atobase of Ile-Ife. The Ife chief trained her through secondary, modern school and teachers’ training college.

She attended African Church Primary School, Eko-tedo, Ibadan, from 1950 to 1957 and thereafter proceeded to Anglican Girls Secondary Modern School, Ile-Ife from 1959 to 1961, where she came out in flying colors in her final exams.  It was in this school she met Tunde Ponnle, who later became her soulmate.  He was a teacher in the school.  They got married on Tuesday, April 26, 1966 in Ibadan.

After modern school, she proceeded to the United Missionary College, Ibadan for teacher’s training course from 1962 to 64.  She obtained her Grade Two teachers certificate before moving to the University of Ife in 1969 for her associate diploma in Education, which she completed in 1970.

She earned a Higher Certificate in Telecom/Electrical Electronics from the Polytechnic of North London.  She also obtained her certificate of practice from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Incorporated Engineers before returning to Nigeria.

After working in organisations, such as the Western Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (WNBC)/ Western Nigeria Broadcasting Service (WNBS) in Ibadan, Adebowale Electrical Industry, Maiden Electronics and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), the late Mrs. Ponnle and her husband later started MicCom, which is an acronym of Michael and Comfort, a combination of the first names of the co-founders.  The late Mrs. Ponnle is survived by her husband, five children and twelve grand children.

  • Kwara’s N70b rice project starts in December

Kwara State’s N70 billion rice cultivation and processing project is to be unveiled in December, its foreign partner has said.

The partner, Valsolar S.L. 2006 of Spain, said it has secured funds for the project that has an initial life span of 4 years.
Reacting to the news, Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed welcomed the development as the project is key to his administration’s efforts to provide food for the people, jobs for the youths and inputs for agro-allied industries, while at the same time growing the state’s economy through agriculture.

“ I am particularly pleased that this project will be generating 12,000 jobs across the value chain as well as substantially growing the state’s economy. Our farmers will also benefit from the technology transfer component of the project. No doubt, this huge project is one of several envisaged under the Kwara State Agricultural Modernization Plan (KAMP) the implementation of which is soon to commence”, he said.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Investment, Policy and Strategy,  Abayomi Ogunsola, said under the terms of the joint venture Memorandum of Agreement  the company is to invest N70billion in the project over the next four years, while the state will provide 20,000 hectares of land as well as infrastructural support for the project which will operate under a registered joint venture company, Valsolar-Kwara Limited.  According to Ogunsola, each annual module of the project will  see the company cultivate 5000 hectares of land and produce 40000 tons of rice for local and international consumption.

Following satellite and laboratory soil analyses earlier in the year, Valsolar-Kwara has decided to site the projects in communities along the River Niger in Kwara North, namely Tsonga, Pategi, Bacita and Lafiagi, he said.
