Orji Okonkwo dedicates goal to mum

Golden Eaglets’ striker Orji Okonkwo has described his 35-yard screamer which fetched the second goal for Nigeria in the 4-2 defeat of Mexico in the semi finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup as his best ever.

Okonkwo had played a minor part in the tournament until fate thrust him into the fray, as replacement for Funsho Bamgboye who was suspended after two yellow cards. The boy grabbed the bull by the horns to score what is known in Nigerian football parlance as ‘intercontinental ballistic missile.’

“I have never scored a goal like this before and you cannot practice this kind of goal,” admitted Okwonkwo, the first boy in a family with six other children. The goal I scored against Mexico today is a wonderful goal and I’m dedicating the goal to my mum who has been there for me; challenging me to be the best.

“My dad died last year; I remember him too but it is my mum that has been there for me all this while. I thank her so much,” he said.

Okonkwo, is one of the team’s pacesetter performers who scored thrice, including a goal against Mali on April 21, 2014, at the sub-regional West African Football Union (WAFU) B Tournament in Togo where the Golden Eaglets finished third behind Benin and Togo.

Over 21,000 spectators including NFF President Amaju Pinnick, saw Okonkwo’s top -of -the -drawer goal but there was another person on his mind when his lively shot sailed into the net.

“Today, I want to thank coach Emmanuel Amuneke for pushing me so hard,” said the player, who was sanctioned and kept out of the squad for months prior to the African U-17 Championship in Niger Republic.

The striker netted three more goals than Osun Babes FC Striker Edewor Precious and was elated with her achievement but remained humble.

“It’s a good feeling to win the award. I never saw it coming. This is a lovely moment and I would like to dedicate this to my late dad Adeyemi Sule, my coaches at my youth club (Jagunmolu FC) Hakeem Adebare, Usman Olanrewaju and also my present club coaches Rollandson Odeh and Domo Okara.

“I also want to give a big shout out to the club fans, who showed their affection to me even in tough times, to my teammates, most especially the senior players, who kept on encouraging me and to all my friends as well.

“Without them, I wouldn’t have achieved this. This reward is for the team, rather than an individual,” she told supersport.com

She went on saying; “it is obvious I want to be among the great players in female football history. I am young and still learning. I am at a club that gives me the opportunity to grow as a player. I’m very happy. This is a very important moment in my career because I never thought I would have the numbers of goals I have gotten on this team.

“I want to win more important collective titles at Bayelsa Queens, we are having a good run and we also have a good team and I am convinced this will be our year for a double, namely the Super Six League Champions and the FA Cup final with Sunshine Queens.”

Asked about next season she remained coy but again full of humility ending “I would like to defend it but it will depend on God and with his grace, I will definitely defend it.”
