  • Completely defeated?

Major-Gen. Rogers Nicholas,  Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, the military shaft set up by the Buhari Presidency to pierce and shatter the Boko Haram insurgency, is probably entitled to his upbeat comments. And to be fair, it is not exactly the self-praise from the lizard, in Igbo culture, through Chinua Achebe novels: the lizard that falls from the high Iroko tree praises itself, even if no one else did.

From the territory-claiming Boko Haram of less than three years ago, the Nigerian Islamists, whose core ideology is the evil of Western education, have fallen into a mere ragtag army.  Instead of attacking with fury, with poor Nigerian soldiers diving for cover, it would appear the other way now: Boko Haram in constant retreat.

Again, instead of the audacious missions of three years ago, when Boko Haram was even raiding police academies and military barracks, unleashing more havoc than it suffered, Boko Haram is now largely limited to soft targets, mostly by female suicide bombers, with declining casualty figures. Even raiding isolated police posts and confiscating arms and ammo in their armouries, appears beyond Boko Haram’s ken, capacity and capability right now. So are, it would appear, big market bombings and the wanton slaughter, that marked its earlier bombing exploits, of churches and later, mosques.

So, when inaugurating the Nigeria-Cameroon Military Joint Mission, against Boko Haram in Maiduguri, Borno State, Gen. Nicholas serenaded his officers and men, he wasn’t exactly just jiving.

“We have broken the heart and soul of Shekau’s group, taking over the camp and its environs,” he enthused. “They are on the run and we are pursuing them to wherever they go. This time around, there is no place for escape anywhere.”

He gave the present state of the insurrection: ”This is the last phase of the operation,” he declared at another event in Maiduguri, while handing over 82 citizens set free from Boko Haram captivity. “We are asking everybody in Borno State to cooperate by giving information about fleeing Boko Haram insurgents. People need to be vigilant,” he counselled. ”If you see any suspected person, report to the military or security agents.”

Contrast this upbeat report to the rather subdued tone of the latest release from the Ibrahim Shekau camp, and Gen. Nicholas’s report assumes even more credulity. Shekau, the crazed Boko Haram leader, whose swashbuckling arrogance and blood-cuddling boasts hall-marked the apex of the Islamists’ destructive orgy, sounded rather subdued and resigned. After a clatter of impotent instructions, for Boko Haram cells nationwide to “destroy” Nigeria and Cameroon, he declared himself frustrated at the turnout of things; adding he would rather die and go to “paradise”.

Tales of opposing factions on the Boko Haram side, with the camps bitterly opposed to one another, also suggest an insurrection which appears at its lowest ebb thus far, thus further suggesting a possible end. As each day dawns now, the sect appears to suffer more casualties, more captures and more surrenders. All these indices suggest a low morale of its fighting men.

On the civilian side, it is also a flurry of cheering news that Maiduguri, hitherto the vortex of the destruction, is living as normal a life as possible, suggesting a phase from war to an immediate post-war era. Markets that used to close by 4 pm now linger into the night, with buyers and sellers seemingly unperturbed by any Boko Haram menace. So progressively, the zest to live is taking over from the fear to cow.

Still, despite all these points, it is sheer hubris to declare the insurrection “completely defeated”.  It is not.

For starters, Boko Haram is no conventional war, fought by equally matched armies, sizing each other up. Rather, it is guerrilla warfare in which the underdog is determined to play David, and unhorse and disgrace the colossal Goliath.

By that skewed rule of engagement, therefore, the sect just needs some piece of outlandish bombings, against some unprotected soft bellies, for the claim of “complete defeat” to come crashing down. Such tragedies are sure to grab big media headlines, partly because man is essentially a pain-avoiding animal; partly because much of the media loves sensation and titillation — and the bigger the tragedy, the bigger the headline.

Besides, Nigeria is such a vast territory that not every part of its extensive land is adequately policed. In many far-flung rural areas, security is most times driven by mutual good-neighbourlinesss, with everyone looking out for everyone and vice-versa. With the nearest police post miles away, such communities rely on mutual good faith to protect lives and assets. These communities provide soft target for Boko Haram murderous bullies; and they could be victims of danger by such premature declarations.

So, while acknowledging and appreciating how far the military has gone to rein in these terrorists, it isn’t bragging time yet.

Instead, the military should maintain the tempo to further decimate the insurgents. But as they haul in more Boko Haram captives, de-radicalisation should be the emphasis, such that those who are in would find it loath to ever go back into the jungle for such destructive causes.

Then, there is the key issue of future prospects. Boko Haram may have a theocratic surface. But deep inside, it would appear a poverty and economic problem. It is a complete loss of hope that would make a man “volunteer” to willfully end his life, and take other innocent souls with him, as a suicide bomber. So, as many of the Boko Haram cadres as possible should be trained in some jobs, so that they can earn a living and live a dignified life.

  • Buratai: Boko Haram insurgents defeated

    Buratai: Boko Haram insurgents defeated

Following weekend’s bombardment of Boko Haram by troops, Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Yusuf Buratai yesterday declared that the Boko Haram insurgents have been defeated by troops in the northeast.

He spoke at a special service to commemorate the 2018 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, held at ST Bartholomew’s Military Church, Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.

Gen. Buratai, represented by Maj.-Gen. David Ahmadu, the Chief of Training and Operations, Army Headquarters, said the military had won the war against insurgency.

He revealed that the military had recorded successes in the intensified offensive, routed and defeated the insurgents, adding that the military was committed to the restoration of peace to the region.

At the weekend, a major factional leader of the insurgents’ group, Mamman Nur was wounded, his wife killed, many insurgents also killed and thousands captured while several others fled the onslaught at their enclaves in Sambisa Forest and the Lake Chad region.

Hundreds of civilians were also freed by troops from terrorists’ captivity in the ongoing clearance operation in the past one week.

Gen. Buratai decried the insurgents’ recruitment of the teeming unemployed youths that lack morality and are illiterates in their fight.

The chief of army staff admonished parents to ensure proper moral upbringing of their wards to protect them from being used by bad elements to foment troubles and disrupt peace in the society.

“I want to assure you without mincing words that the Boko Haram terrorists have been defeated, all we are fighting for now is the peace in the northeast.

“Character begins from home; if the children or the youth do not listen to their parents then there is problem. It is the responsibilities of parents to ensure that they disciplined their children.

“And the children too must have something to give back by being disciplined, educated, try to behave well wherever they go and without being deceived by anyone to do what is bad”.

Gen. Buratai stressed the commitments of the military to end insurgency, protect lives and property and secure the nation’s territorial integrity.

He noted that the Nigerian Army had contributed to peace building in various countries across the globe including African sub-region.

The army chief added that their sacrifices of the fallen heroes would be immortalise by ensuring unity, peace and stability in the country.

Gen. Buratai charged the soldiers not to allow themselves to be hoodwinked by self- seeking individuals who promote hate speech and to remain dedicated and professional in the discharge of their duties.

While commending President Muhamadu Buhari over his support to the military, the Chief Army Staff tasked commanders to ensure effective utilisation of equipment and logistics provided to facilitate successful completion of the counter-insurgency campaign.

Maj.-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, disclosed that the troops had recorded significant success in various operations against the insurgents in Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad region in the past few days.

Gen. Nicholas assured that the counter-insurgency campaign would soon be concluded.

The News Aagency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that highlights of the events included special prayer session for the fallen heroes, orphans and widows as well as prayer for the nation and success of Operation Lafiya Dole.

Also yesterday, Gen. Buratai urged Northern youths, particularly those in the Northeast, to shun terrorism and other violent acts and channel their energies to productive ventures.

Buratai made the appeal in Monguno, at the final of the maiden Chief of Army Staff Football tournament between Ajeri FC of Monguno and River Side FC of Damasak.

River Side FC won the championship by a lone goal through a penalty in the first half.

He asked them to channel their energies toward acquiring education and skills through which they could realise their ambition.

Gen. Buratai promised that the Nigerian army would continue to provide opportunities for the youth to express themselves and showcase their God-given talents.

“To this end, I call on the youth of northern Borno and indeed the youth of the Northeast to shun and reject terrorism.

“The youths, who are the future leaders, should continue to cooperate with the authorities, army and indeed other security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious persons within their midst in order to ensure a more secured environment.

“I tell you right now, so many of them are on the run; the Boko Haram terrorists are on the run.

“I urge you to be very careful of any strange face or any of your colleagues or friends that have been misled to join them.

“As soon as they appear or come back, do not waste time, report them immediately to the nearest security agency.

“There is the need to consolidate on the already achieved security atmosphere,” the army chief said.

Gen. Buratai said that when he visited Monguno two years ago, the town was completely deserted due to attacks by the terrorists.

He gave glory to the Almighty God for the return of peace to the town, necessitating the people’s to return to re-start their lives.

He said that the tournament confirmed the state of security in Northern Borno had improved.

“I want to say that this particularly achievement is made possible by each and every one of you here. I know it has not been easy as some of you are still in the IDP camps.

“Today’s occasion is symbolic; it is an indication that it is time for everyone to go back to his/her home.

“This game has shown the resilience of the youth and indeed the commitment of the people to go back to their homes and begin live again after the devastating experience with the Boko Haram terrorists.

“I want to say that their – terrorists- days are numbered Insha Allah.

“The end to this threat to lives and property is near,’’ he added.

According to him, the defeat of the terrorists is not a claim, but a reality.

Also addressing troops of 8 Division at Monguno, headquarters of Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State, the COAS  urged the troops to be determined in their efforts to stablilise their area of operation and overcome the  insurgency.

His words: “We must remain here to stabilise it. You all know that we have some few attacks here and there by the same elements, but I assure you that their days are numbered.

“With your efforts, with your determination, we will finally overcome the Boko Haram challenge.”

The COAS noted that the creation of the 8 Division was a “major strategic decision” which helped in addressing the challenge of Boko Haram insurgency in Borno North.

“I want to say that this division has lived up to its expectation of containing the Boko Haram challenge here. What remains is for us to continue to stabilise and continue to operate, to prevent any element that may raise their heads in the future.

  • Is Boko Haram really defeated?

For many years and months right from the tenure of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, it appeared as if this day will never come.

A day that the main operating base of the insurgents, Boko Haram, which is the Sambisa Forest in the North East of the country would be run over and overtaken by the Nigerian military.

The sect looked insurmountable for many years as they carried out their onslaught against innocent Nigerians in the area.

Sometimes in the past, the sect even ventured out of the North Eastern part of the country and took their evil acts to North Western states, Abuja and the North Central states.

Apart from sending millions to their early graves, many were maimed while billions of naira worth of properties were also destroyed.

They held sway in the region and other parts of the country with their guerrilla style of warfare that many Nigerians feared that terrorism might eventually consume the country.

The war at some point became very difficult  to win by the Nigerian military, which was known for its prowess at several international military operations.

Before Boko Haram insurgency, the Nigerian military had performed well in foreign operations by helping to quell crises in many countries.

But the inability of the Nigerian security agencies to win the war against Boko Haram for a long time was attributed to fifth columnists and sabotage in the system.

Over $15 billion meant for sophisticated weapons and gadgets needed in the fight against the insurgents were said to have been diverted under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

On assumption in office in May, 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari wasted no time in seeking international support against Boko Haram.

Not only did he meet with the G7 in Germany, but he got Nigeria’s neighbouring countries deeply involved in the war against Boko Haram.

Some Nigerians were however disappointed last year when the administration could not completely end the insurgency by December 2015 after three months deadline were issued to the military.

By 31st December, 2015, Boko Haram, that was described as technically defeated and decimated, still managed to carry out some soft target attacks in the country in the year 2016.

A year after, by 22nd December, 2016, the military declared Boko Haram defeated.

It also sought the assistance of the public towards arresting some terrorists who are on the run from the Sambisa Forest and trying to mingle with the populace in other parts of the country.

So not a few Nigerians received with joy the good news that the war is over and the Sambisa Forest will henceforth be used as training ground for the Nigerian military.

Buhari, in a goodwill message to the troops on the 24th of December, 2016, had said: “I am delighted at, and most proud of the gallant troops of the Nigerian Army, on receipt of the long-awaited and most gratifying news of the final crushing of Boko Haram terrorists in their last enclave in Sambisa Forest.

“I want to use this opportunity to commend the determination, courage and resilience of troops of Operation Lafiya Dole at finally entering and crushing the remnants of the Boko Haram insurgents at “Camp Zero”, which is located deep within the heart of Sambisa Forest.

“I was told by the Chief of Army Staff that the Camp fell at about 1:35pm on Thursday, December 22, and that the terrorists are on the run, and no longer have a place to hide. I urge you to maintain the tempo by pursuing them and bringing them to justice.” He added

Besides international commendations for the new feat achieved, President Buhari and the military have been hailed by state governors and many other Nigerians.

But in a twist of events, Boko Haram’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, on Thursday appeared in a new video and disputed the  claim that the sect had been dislodged from the Sambisa Forest.

It is however the insurgents’ word against the military as such video could be recorded from anywhere outside the Sambisa Forest.

The video may also mean that the sect has another operating base, especially as the remaining abducted Chibok girls were not found in the Sambisa Forest.

The reported capturing of the Sambisa Forest and ending the war in the NorthEast is expected to boost investors’ confidence in the country and increase investments in-flow, which will go a long was to address the present economic recession in the country.

To this end, security agencies and other Nigerians must continue to be on their guards to ensure that Boko Haram stays defeated.

On no account should Boko Haram or any other terrorists group be allowed to carry out any attack in any part of Nigeria.

    Homage

President Muhammadu Buhari last week Sunday received some members of the Christian community, who paid him Christmas homage at his official residence in the State House, Abuja.

That was the second time he was receiving such homage under the current dispensation.

But the Christmas homages appeared to be fast loosing its steam.

Under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, such homage was always a funfare that many Nigerians always looked forward to.

The Vice President then, Mohammed Sambo, who was a muslim, never failed to attend and assist Jonathan to receive visitors on such homage.

The visitors then always lined up for handshakes and snapshots with Jonathan and then Sambo before departing the venue.

Like under Jonathan, many Christians and Muslims also took part in the first Christmas homage paid to Buhari on the 25th of December, 2015.

But that crowd appeared to be fast thinning out.

Few persons turned up for the Chrismas homage last week Sunday.

For some reasons also, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo could not attend the Christmas homage.

  • ‘Boko Haram not defeated until Chibok girls are freed’

The National Union of Textiles Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTWN) has said the Federal Government cannot claim to have ended Boko Haram insurgency until the missing girls are freed.

Addressing a news conference in Kaduna at the weekend to mark the two years anniversary of the abduction of Chibok girls, the union’s National President, Comrade John Adaji, said the incident left the country with a big injury yet to be healed.

He said: “We hear good news of how the insurgents have been dislodged by soldiers. Check points have disappeared and we hardly hear of bomb blasts. But we cannot celebrate when our girls kidnapped in Chibok are still missing. To me, insurgency ends when the girls are found.”

The General Secretary, Comrade Issa Aremu, said 17 parents of the victims have reportedly died, following the trauma of their missing daughters.

Represented by the Deputy National Secretary, Comrade Dele Ojo, he noted that “those who abducted the 219 girls have criminally kidnapped the communities of future leaders.

“We must join forces with the forces of progress and development worldwide to rescue our beloved girls.”

Aremu said: “Global terrorism is making the world of work more precarious.

“Thousands of workers in Nigeria, France, Belgium, Syria and Iraq have been abducted and killed by terrorists, who see defenceless workers as soft targets.

“The International Labour Organisation (ILO) must, therefore, redouble efforts with other international agencies to rid the world of terror. Social dialogue and negotiated settlements are tested ILO’s mechanisms for resolving social conflicts, not senseless violence in which innocent Chibok girls are victims. Nothing justifies criminal abductions.

“Chibok girls are missing, but they are not forgotten until they are rescued.”

  • Shettima: Boko Haram has been defeated

Shettima: Boko Haram has been defeated

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima said yesterday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, that Boko Haram insurgents no longer occupied any territory in his state.

Shettima, chairman of the Northern State Governors’ Forum, who visited Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha in company of his Niger and Jigawa state colleagues, Alhaji Abubakar Sanni Bello and Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, said Boko Haram had been defeated.

He said: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) government has scored a pass mark in fighting the Boko Haram insurgency. Boko Haram has been defeated and the roads in the state have been reopened for business.”

Commenting on the economic situation in the country, Shettima said: “The problems faced by the nation are expected, as the APC government is in the process of rebuilding the nation.

“When the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) misruled the country, crude oil was about $140 per barrel. The price has fallen to less than $40 per barrel. It is to the credit of President Muhammadu Buhari that the nation is still moving despite the decline in revenue. If the PDP had been in power, the country would have collapsed.

“The President’s integrity has earned the nation respect in the global community, as corruption has reduced. Nigerians should hail President Buhari for rebuilding the country.”

Governor Okorocha said: “There was evidence that Nigeria was almost going down before the emergence of the APC government. God loves this country and this is why he has brought APC at this point in time to save the nation from collapse. If the PDP is still in charge and oil falls to this level, the country would have been in a mess. Which means, God is not yet done with Nigeria and in President Buhari, he has restored our hopes.”

He added: “For APC leaders, it is a test. APC is equal to the task and we will move Nigerians out of this pit dug by the PDP and the economy will soon blossom. President Buhari has brought a sense of direction and leadership to the nation. But for him, the economic problem would have plunged the nation into crisis. We, the APC governors, are putting heads together to see how we can complement the President’s efforts.”

  • Boko Haram will be defeated before December, Buhari vows

Boko Haram will be defeated before December, Buhari vows

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday declared that the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) of the Lake Chad Commission will defeat the Boko Haram terrorists by the end of this year.

He made the remark in Cotonou during the gala lunch held in his honour by the President of Benin Republic, Boni Yayi.

Buhari, who was on a one-day visit to Cotonou as the special guest of honor at the 55th independence anniversary of Benin Republic, commended Yayi for increasing the number of Benin troops to 800 for the MNJTF.

He stated, “And I assure you that we will defeat Boko Haram by the end of this year.”

Noting that he was overwhelmed by the honour of inviting him for the independence anniversary, and by bestowing the national honour of the Republic of Benin on him, he noted that even when he was a military head of state, Nigeria has always learnt to live peacefully with her neighbours.

He said: “I am impressed by your concern and critical approaches by increasing your contributions to the multinational task force of the Lake Chad Commission. This is a great sacrifice on the part of the Benin Republic….

“Even in my first coming into office under a different arrangement, we have learnt to live in peace with our neighbours. Within the week I was sworn in, I went to Niger, Chad. I was supposed to go to Cameroon but I was summoned by the G7 leaders to brief them about the security situation in Nigeria concerning Boko Haram which declared allegiance to ISIS which gives it international dimension”.

Speaking earlier, Yayi had pledged that his country was ready to send about 800 troops as part of its contributions to the fight against terrorism.

He promised that his country would collaborate with Nigeria in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency.

“Your Excellency, I am by your side. You are not alone. We are ready to send about 800 men,” he stated

According to him, the Republic of Benin is the 37th state of Nigeria as he described Buhari as a man of integrity who was concerned about the integration of the sub-region.

He said: “You are a man of integrity. The integration of the sub-region is your concern. Your coming here brings our two countries together. Our customs services should meet about economy. Benin is the 37th state of Nigeria.”

  • Group warns defeated APC candidate to accept fate

Group warns defeated APC candidate to accept fate

A youth’s group under the aegis of Ifako Ijaye Youth Forum urged the leadership of the Lagos Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to call on the defeated aspirant in last month’s House of Assembly primaries in Ifako Ijaye Constituency 2, Mr. Benjamin Adeyemi Olabinjo, to order by desisting from parading himself as the candidate of the party.

The youth forum in a statement released yesterday and signed by its President and Secretary General, namely: Abiodun Alatishe and Godwin Agu, alleged that the defeated aspirant has been parading himself as the candidate of the party by pasting posters within Ifako Ijaye constituency 2, which it said is a violation of the Electoral Act.

The forum said the authentic candidate for Ifako Ijaye constituency 2 remained Mr. Rasheed Makinde, who, it said, defeated three other aspirants in the December 2nd,2015 House of Assembly Primaries to clinch the ticket as the APC candidate

Besides, the group further explained that Olabinjo in flagrant disregard for the party has been moving from one neighbourhood to the other within the constituency campaigning for votes, when, indeed, he is not the candidate of the party.

‘‘This action exhibited by Olabinjo if not quickly addressed by the party at the State level can cause APC to lose the seat to the opposition party because the house would be seen to be divided. We have it on good authority that the defeated aspirant is working against the interest of the party by secretly conniving for the opposition,’’ the statement said.
