  • Three Oyo lawmakers defect

Three members of the Oyo State House of Assembly yesterday announced their intentions to dump their party for a new one.

Also, the Assembly kick-started the legislative process to end street begging among underage residents.

While two members dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Action Democratic Party (ADP), another member defected from the Accord Party to the ADP.

The defectors are: Kehinde Oloya (APC to ADP), Safiu Adekunle (APC to ADP) and Wunmi Oladeji (Accord to ADP).

The defections were not unconnected with the recent decision of former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala to dump the APC for ADP to actualise his dream of governing the state again.

The letters of the defections, addressed to Speaker Olagunju Ojo, was read on the floor of the Assembly during plenary.

The development brings to 14 members the number of lawmakers in the ruling APC and the leading opposition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

ADP has three members and the PDP has one.

Reacting to the defections, Ojo, who described them as the “beauty of democracy”, wished the defectors success in their new parties.

Also, the lawmakers deliberated on a motion sponsored by Fatai Adesina (Ibadan Southeast) and Majority Leader Kehinde Subair (Ibadan Southwest 1), titled: Urgent Need to Curb Menace of Begging by Underage Children on The Major Streets in the State.

The motion condemned the high rate of children beggars, especially during school hours.

The lawmakers noted that “the proliferation of child buggers prowling the streets on daily basis was a pointer to the fact that the role the government was playing in the training and upbringing was not effective, in view of children dropping out of school and turning to beggars and miscreants on the streets”.

They added: “For a child to be responsible, the child must have a good upbringing – from immediate parents, family and the government. The training and upbringing of a child must include moral upbringing and sound education.

“The House is concerned that the negative effects the actions and attitudes child beggars will have on the state in particular and the country at large especially in future is better imagined than experienced.”

  • Abia PDP chieftains defect to APGA

The leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has received about 3,500 defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.

Obingwa is Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s local government, which is noted for its high voting strength in the state. In the last general elections, it was said to have delivered over 82,000 of votes that gave Ikpeazu victory.

The defectors should have been received by APGA leaders at a ceremony held last week at the National Institute for Nigerian Languages (NINLAN), Umuokahia, Obingwa council area, but it was disrupted by thugs allegedly hired by the PDP. This, it was said, prompted the party chairman to issue a statement condemning the action.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Maduka Akpulonu said the group decided to dump the PDP for APGA because “the party party has failed to provide purposeful governance to the people of the state in the past 20 years”.

He accused chieftains of his former party of making efforts to stop them from defecting to APGA, stressing that nothing will make them to return to the PDP.

His words: “We decided to dump our former party for APGA because PDP as a party has failed to provide purposeful governance to the people of the state. Some chieftains of our former party made efforts to stop us from defecting to APGA, but we resisted the move, saying nothing will make us return to PDP.”

While welcoming governorship aspirant, Dr. Alex Otti, and other party leaders to the area, Akpulonu urged Otti to extend his campaign to all the 11 wards in the council. The chairman apologised for the botched rally.

He said: “We apologise for the botched rally last week. Our defection has shaken the PDP to its foundation in Obingwa.  They frustrated our efforts to dump the PDP. The party (PDP) won’t do anything for the people and won’t allow them to leave to a better party.”

  • APC lawmakers being tempted with cash to defect, says leader

    •Oshiomhole: problems ’ll be solved

Aggrieved All Progressives Congress (APC) members in the House of Representatives are being enticed with mouth-watering cash and automatic return ticket to leave the party, House Leader Femi Gbajabiamila said yesterday.

He spoke during a meeting between APC lawmakers and the National Working Committee (NWC)  led by Adams Oshiomhole.

Gbajabiamila demanded automatic return tickets for the faithful members to compensate them for theitr steadfastness and broaden the gains of democracy.

But Oshiomhole said he could not guarantee a return ticket adding that the APC would not impose candidates on their constituents.

The chairman added that while the party would continue to dialogue with members of the party with genuine grievances, it would not negotiate with those he described as “political mercenaries”.

Gbajabiamila said it took commitment of the members to the party and its ideology to turn down the tempting monetary offer, stressing that he was confident that the automatic ticket being offered would not be given to those who accepted the offer and defected from the APC.

He asked the APC chairman to continue to fight for the interest of the lawmakers and do everything within his power to ensure that they are returned to the House in view of the experiences they have garnered over the years.

He said: “I want to congratulate the party that we are able to heave a sign of relief after what I personally consider an abysmal failure, the attempt to turn APC into a minority party in the House and Senate. The reason why that was not possible is because seated before you is a team committed to the ideals of our party and despite sharing in the grievances of those who have left, remain stead fast.

“It is because of them and not because of anyone of us in leadership, it is because of them, their commitment and steadfastness that in both chambers of the national assembly and especially in the House of Representatives that we command a clear majority. I emphasize this so that the party can begin to appreciate these members.

“It is the time to consolidate and stay in touch with our members and keep them close because, this is what I told you Mr Chairman, this is their time, I was on Channels yesterday with the PDP publicity secretary and it made my heart bleed by the way politicians were described in a term analogous to farming. He said this was a harvest time as if it was a harvest of corn, rice and maize. The APC is not for harvest.

He said a former PDP member who defected to the SDP had now joined the APC.

“This letter came from Hon. Olamide Oni from Ekiti who about three or four months ago, defected from the PDP to the SDP.

“He realised that the only party that can serve his interest is the APC. He is now with us.”

Oshiomhole said the nation must get its politics right, while politicians must learn to have ideology that will drive their electoral process, saying “Until we get there, these musical chairs will continue.”

He said with the defection of some members, “What has happened is that we are able to establish ahead of time those fair-weather party members who go according to where their pocket will be lined. Some of them are politicians of convenience and I don’t think that if we patch them up now, they can still flow.

. “Somebody asked if we are going to counter the PDP by offering automatic ticket and I asked, did we serve anybody a departure ticket? If we did not give you a departure ticket, how did the issue of return ticket arise?

. “My own findings arising from interactions, is that it is true that there are a number of legislators who have some issues with their local forces in their respective states and not arising from the federal executives.

“Those issues are local and because every politics is local, every solution to political problem should necessarily be local.

Oshiomhole said to give party members a level-playing ground and to ensure justice and fairness that it decided to use direct primary for the Osun governorship election.

He said “In other to send clear signals out so that no one person or group can hold the system to ransom, we have tried to revisit our constitution and activate all the clauses that will help us to maintain unity and harmony within the house.

“I have said that for us to have peace and unity, we must fight for justice and fairness because peace and unity is an outcome of justice and fairness. If you do not address justice, we cannot preach peace because peace cannot be decreed, but the outcome of a process.

“I said to those who say they are running to PDP that, it is good, that is where you belong. If you left there because you felt that the culture of sharing will be deepened in the APC and you have found that sharing the money is not part of it and you choose to return, good luck to you.

“But you must realize that the access to CBN has been cut off, the access to NNPC has been cut off, the access to converting defense spending has been cut off and those who have done it are helping security agencies to explain, they are confessing how they share the national treasury and so, you are free to go.”

•Ex-tescom boss: Fayose has lost goodwill

More prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the campaign train of the flag bearer, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, rolled into four local government areas of Ekiti State.

Local government areas visited by Fayemi included Ise/Orun, Emure, Ikere and Ado, where the PDP lost hundreds of members to APC.

In Ise, former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, led other leaders to defect to the APC. Among the defectors are former Secretary to the State Government Dr Afolabi Ojuawo; immediate past Attorney-General and Commissioner of  Justice, Owoseni Ajayi, and a  member of the House of Assembly,  Ebenezer Alagbada.

Defectors from Ikere are former local government chairman, Gboyega Akinola; a House of Assembly member, Sunday Akinniyi; former Assembly  member Omoyeni Peter; Banji Aluko, who is a former councillor; former local council chairman Adejumo  Tajudeen and Councillor Tunji Ogoji, human rights lawyer, Morakinyo Ogele, who hailed Akinola, Akinniyi and other kinsmen for heeding the call of the people by ditching Fayose and joining the progressives fold.

Supporters trooped out to welcome Fayemi in Ikere, the hometown of the PDP candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola. The crowd caused a massive gridlock and prevented vehicular traffic before and during Fayemi’s presence in the town.

In Emure, PDP lost former House of Representatives aspirant Ayo Peters; former senatorial chairman of PDP, Tale Ghadafi and former House of  Representatives aspirant Tony Yisa; while at Eporo, 140 PDP members  defected to APC.

In Ado, PDP lost the immediate past Special Adviser on Culture and Tourism, Ademola Bello; former House of Assembly aspirant who won the primary, but was denied his mandate Odunayo Arinka;  former Special Adviser on Agriculture Bosun Osaloni;  Kusi Omodara; and immediate past Chairman of  Teaching Service Commission, Abiodun Falayi.

Falayi said that, after 15 years of parting ways with the progressives, he had to leave PDP after finding out that Fayose liked to pay evil for good.

He explained that he was led by a man of God to work with Fayose because he assured that he would behave well after becoming governor again in 2014, lamenting however, that he had to leave after discovering that  Fayose had gone worse in his relationship with the people.

Falayi said his supporters who went with him to PDP are now with him in APC. He advised Fayose and PDP candidate, Olusola Eleka, not to waste time and money to campaign in Ado-Ekiti.

He said: “Fayose has lost all the goodwill he enjoyed among the people here because of his greed, selfishness and his penchant to pay evil for good.

“Fayemi is not new to us. He is honest and humble and he represents Ekiti symbol of integrity everywhere around the world who, as we can see, is now favoured to win the election because of his records of performance and transparent manner of running government affairs.”

Adeyeye described Fayose as “a greedy and selfish politician with uncanny capacity to spin reckless lies”.

He thanked Ise residents for their massive turnout at the rally and urged them to show the same enthusiasm on election day.

Ajayi, said Fayose was the most  ungrateful human being that loved to pay evil for good.

The APC candidate promised a return of human development policies of his first administration. He pledged to take care of civil servants and restore their rights and privileges while other citizens not on government payroll will be economically empowered.

Fayemi said he was touched by the decrepit conditions under which Ekiti people lived in the administration of PDP, saying that APC’s administration as could be seen between 2010 and 2014 still presented  the best option that could address their problems in the most enduring  manner.

He said he would continue his development policy encapsulated in his Eight-point Agenda, assuring that a vote for APC is a vote for freedom and opening of new opportunities for development.

Fayemi said he would not sack teachers and local government workers, saying that he never contemplated sacking workers but was an apostle of jobs creation to keep a decent living.

Ugboma said: “The killers who prevented you from voting in 2015 have been neutralised and their sponsors will also face the music. The poor performance of the PDP in Rivers State has provided room for APC to win all the elections in 2019. We will ensure you receive your PVCs.”

Ugboma, an indigene of Ndoni in ONELGA, where a ex-Governor Peter Odili, also hails from, promised that the 2019 elections will be devoid of violence, killings and rigging.

The CMD  said: “I am happy I am a member of the APC family. Something different is beginning to happen in ONELGA. The over 100 PDP members that have just joined APC in ONELGA, you will not regret the wise decision. About two years ago, I stood on this ground (the playground of Federal College of Education (FCE), Technical, Omoku) and I declared for the APC. I did not make a mistake joining the APC. Today, my story is different. Your stories shall also be different. Your lives shall change for the better. God shall use you to rewrite the stories of your families. You are not making a mistake by joining the APC. You have taken the golden steps to victory.”

Speaking with reporters, Ugboma, the chief facilitator of the programme, said that Wike was deceiving Rivers people with his Mr. Project claim.

He said: “When the Transportation Minister, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, was governor of Rivers State, the roads that Wike claims to be constructing, were created by him (Amaechi). Wike is just wasting the money of Rivers and cajoling some people to siphon resources of the state. For political reason, Wike is destroying legacies, programmes and capital-intensive projects of Amaechi’s government that can provide employment opportunities for the teeming qualified youths.

One of the defectors, Mrs. Queen Azubuike, said she and others decided to join the APC, because they were tired of the killings in ONELGA.
