  • Army pledges to defend Nigeria – Buratai

Damasak, the location of 145 Batallion of the Nigerian Army remained calm on Thursday after troops inflicted heavy casualty on the Boko Haram terrorists.

The insurgents attack the location on Wednesday at about 6p. m. but withdrew about 11p. m. following superior fire power of the troops.

In the last 24 hours, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai has been in the North-East monitoring ongoing operations.

He visited Damask on Tuesday and proceeded to Gudumbali, where the terrorists attacked troops locations on Friday.

Buratai vowed that the military will continue to defend the country and protect its people against attacks, whether external or internal.

He said such incident would not deter the military as it was common in counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations.

Already, the army chief said the Operation Lafiya Dole, coordinating the counter insurgency operations in the North-East was being reorganised and reinvigorated to address identified challenges.

He said this was part of strategies being adopted to prevent recurrence of such attack

The insurgents, which attacked military locations in around the town, were believed to belong to the faction led by Al Barnawi, which had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in West Africa or ISWA.

However, a Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who was on the motorcade of the army chief observed that contrary to media publication, the terrorists did not touch any structure in the town, except one troops’ location.

According to some residents of Gudumbali, who turned out in large numbers to welcome the army chief, the terrorists stormed the town at about 4p. m. on Friday and began to extort money from market women and loot food items.

NAN also gathered that the troops immediately engaged the attackers, but beat a tactical withdrawal before regrouping to repell them.

Mrs Zainab Wakil, a resident, explained that they came at a time when the community market which holds on every Friday was still in session.

“They – terrorists did not attack us, but extort money from us and ordered us to stop trading. We left our wares and ran into the bush.

“We were in the bush until Saturday morning. We came out after we noticed that soldiers, who withdrew had came out to chase away the insurgents,” she said.

Wakil maintained that the Boko Haram terrorists did not attack or kill any of the villagers before they fled at about 1a. m. on Saturday.

Mr Kachala Aliyu, another resident of Gudumbali, also told newsmen that the insurgents did not kill anybody in the town.

Aliyu said that after extorting money and looted food stuff from the traders and disrupted trading in the market, they went straight to the troops’ location.

Unlike the faction led by Abubakar Shekau, the Al Barnawi faction of the Boko Haram group targets the military and its locations in its attacks, not civilians.

In the heat of the insurgency in 2014, the terrorists attacked troops in Gudumbali, where the army suffered heavy casualties, and razed the community. It was recaptured in 2015.

The army had set up a cenotaph in the community, which was inaugurated by the Chief of Army staff in July, to immortalise officers and soldiers, who paid the supreme price in the fight to liberate Gudumbali.

Residents of the town, who were displaced since 2014 began to return to the farming community in June after the army launched: “Operation Last Hold” in May.

The exercise was designed to facilitate the return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Borno North and Lake Chad Basin, to their ancestral homes.

Gudumbali is located at about over 250km of Northern Borno, but just 25km to Niger Republic.

  • Ekiti poll tribunal: Fayemi assembles eight SANs, 27 others for defence

•1,009 witnesses to testify for governor-elect

All is set for legal fireworks at the Ekiti State Election Petitions Tribunal following yesterday’s filing of the defence of the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, at the registry.

The governor-elect filed a 2,558-page reply to the petition filed by the defeated candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

The incoming governor also brought to the tribunal’s registry 3,500 exhibits, including a plethora of documents gathered to defend his victory at the poll.

Fayemi, who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared winner of the July 14 governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The governor-elect has also assembled a crack team of lawyers, including eight Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) and 27 other lawyers to be led by Prince Lateef Fagbemi.

Fagbemi, an election petition expert, was renowned for achieving victory in court for former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi, when the Supreme Court ruled that he be sworn in without participating in the 2007 election.

The apex court held that the votes Amaechi were deemed to have been cast for his then party, the PDP.

It sacked Mr. Celestine Omeiha from office after five months in power.

Others SANs in Fayemi’s legal team are: former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Chief Akinlolu Olujinmi; Dr. Kayode Olatoke, Mr. John Baiyeshea, Mr. Abiodun Owonikoko, Mr. Yomi Aliyu, Mr. Adesegun Ajibola and Mr. Hakeem Afolabi.

Fayemi is praying the tribunal to dismiss Olusola’s petition for “lacking merit”.

On August 3, Olusola filed a 700-page petition, urging the tribunal to declare him winner.

He claimed that he scored the highest number of lawful votes in the governorship poll.

Addressing reporters after filing the petition, Olatoke, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, said Olusola’s petition was a “waste of time as it lacked substance”.

The lawyer also said it was sure that the case would be dismissed by the tribunal.

He added that Fayemi won fair and square in 12 of the 16 local government areas of the state, while Olusola won in four.

Responding to Olusola’s petition on alleged over-voting in some polling units, Olatoke described the claim as frivolous and baseless.

The lawyer said Olusola’s first ground in his petition is based on Fayose’s phantom indictment, which he insisted had been nullified and set aside by a competent court.

He added: “The second ground of Olusola’s petition is alleged over-voting, which is another false claim. In any case, the petition in itself is self-defeating.

“The third ground is on deliberate voiding of votes, as alleged by Olusola, but in actual fact, majority of the voided ballots were votes meant for Fayemi. The fourth ground is on vote-buying, which is baseless as it was Olusola’s sponsor, Governor Ayodele Fayose, who is guilty of this.

“Fayemi won convincingly based on his popularity.”

No date has been fixed for hearing.

  • Defence Headquarters warns against distracting troops

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has urged troops involved in the on-going Operation Sharan Daji in the Northwest to remain steadfast in their assignment aimed at flushing out armed bandits in the region.
It stated that there is calculated attempt to distract the troops through false publication.
According to the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier Gen. John Agim, there is no iota of truth in the information that military personnel involved in the operation are being owed their allowances.
Brigadier Gen Agim in a statement issued in Abuja said it is heartwarming that the nation’s “gallant troops have taken the battle to the forests where the bandits and militias use as hideout before their numerous attacks on innocent citizens.”
“Now that the tide has changed against the bandits, there is a plot to distract and cause disaffection among our troops with a false message circulating in the social media that the troops allowances are not being paid completely,” Agim said.
The statement reads: “The Defence Headquarters responded promptly to unwarranted killings of people in Zamfara, kebbi, Katina, Sokoto and Birni Kwari areas by establishing Operation Sharan Daji. So far, our gallant troops have taken the battle to the forests where the bandits and militias use as hideout before their numerous attack on innocent citizens.
“Now that the tide has changed against the bandits, there is a plot to distract and cause disaffection among our troops with a false message circulating in the social media that the troops allowances are not being paid completely.
“Let me state categorically here that, there is no other special allowance approved from Defence Headquarters than what is being paid to the troops in Operation Sharan Daji, and the troops allowances are paid up to date. In fact, even the troops August allowances have been paid to the Force Commander and arrangement has been completed to pay their August allowances by next week.
“I therefore urge our gallant troops to remain focused and not distracted as the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Gabriel Olanisakin who is always concerned about the welfare of troops, knows and approves all your allowances.
“The general public is hereby requested to disregard the false message as it is intended to distract and discourage the fighting spirit of our gallant troops”.
  • Defence chief advises military officers on financial literacy

Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin, has called on military officers to embrace financial literacy and save for retirement.

He spoke during a three-day workshop conducted for the Nigerian Armed Forces by ABO Services and Konsult, an investment and personal finance training company. The training titled: ‘Impact of Financial Literacy on Successful Retirement Planning and Wealth Creation’, was held at the Army Resource Centre, Abuja.

Olonisakin, who was represented by the Director of Veteran Affairs Division, Maj-Gen. Edmond Obi, said the workshop was necessary to train officers on how to navigate the financial challenges they might experience when they are no longer on regular salary incomes, adding that it would help them to be financially organised and appreciate their jobs better.

He attributed the hardship faced by many retired officers to “poor or lack of proper planning while in active service” and called on officers to embrace proper financial management skills from the early days of their careers.”

He added: “The aim of the workshop is to educate officers and men of the armed forces on the significance of financial literacy with a view to preparing them for a successful retirement life. It has been discovered that lack of financial literacy is one of the major reasons there is wide economic disparity in the country.

“It is believed that, in addition to the vocational and professional skills that are taught in training institutions, money skills, which can only be acquired through financial education, must be taught to fully equip individuals for retirement.”

Managing Director of ABO, Abimbola Olanrewaju, said financial literacy was necessary for all categories of employees and professionals. He said financial literacy skills would help individuals to have blissful retirement.

  • DHQ blasts Amnesty International over reports on military

DHQ blasts Amnesty International over reports on military

The Defence Headquarters has taken a swipe at the  Amnesty International for its 2017/2018 Reports released on Thursday.
It said the report was aimed at weakening the efforts of the nation’s armed forces at ensuring peace and security of the country.
The Acting Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-Geneneral. John Agim said the report was a gross disservice to the nation’s high security command, noting that the international body has made it a routine duty to continue to generate tension among Nigerians by releasing unconfirmed and unsubstantiated claims and figures relating to the military operations in the country to the public.
Brig-Gen Agim in a statement issued in Abuja asserted that AI allegations have followed specific trends which the military high authority is bound to respond to in order to set the records straight.
The statement reads: “The recent report released by Amnesty International (AI) on 22 February 2018 alleging human rights violations by the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), is a gross disservice to the nation’s high security command.
“The action of AI seem to be geared towards weakening the efforts of the AFN at ensuring peace and security in the country.  It has been observed that AI has made it a routine duty to continue generating tension among the citizens by releasing unconfirmed reports, unsubstantiated claims and figures relating to military counter-insurgency operations and wanton killings by unknown groups or persons.
”  It is pertinent to re-iterate that the AFN as a responsible institution, financed by taxpayers, is bound to respond to these allegations in order to put the records in proper perspective.  The AI allegations of human rights violations and extra judicial killing of civilians by the AFN have followed a specific trend for some time now.
”  It could be noted that the organization’s allegations made against the AFN since 2011 to date are largely unsubstantiated.
“The figures released by the organization showed that 4,900 Boko Haram detainees were held in Giwa Barracks in an overcrowded facility where 340 detainees had already died of diseases and dehydration. They further stated that 164 civilians were killed by the Nigerian Air Force when an IDP camp was hit at Rann by a Nigerian Air Force fighter Jet and also that 12 IPOB members were kill in Umuahia by the AFN.
” Unfortunately, AI have failed to acknowledge the on-going fair trial and conviction of culpable members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect and the release of those not found guilty.  The number of persons released and re-integrated with the larger community is over 500.Both the convicted and freed suspects were earlier arrested from different locations across the country and taken to Kainji, a place that is relatively safer with enough space to accommodate them while providing the detainees with 3 square meals daily.
“The suspects were also given proper medical attention by military medical team attached to the detention facility.  It is notable that the arrested Boko Haram members from the ongoing OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE were being tried by the Federal High Court at Wawa Cantonment Kainji since Friday 16 February 2018 convicting 205 detainees to various jail terms while 526 suspects have been freed for want of evidence.
“Other sins of the Nigerian Government as captured by the AI in its report include infringing the rights of lesbians, gays, bi-sexuals and transgender as well as intersex persons.  These AI championed rights have been strictly outlawed by Laws of the Federation of Nigeria subsuming the Nigerian constitution as well as the cultural practices of our people.
” This position of AI, clearly show slack of respect for the constitution of Nigeria which these laws have become part.  Let it be known that the Nigerian Government and its people are not ready and would never be, even in future, to please AI or anyone with the introduction of such things.
“However, if AI feels strongly against the position of the Nigerian people on this issue and wants to assist the ‘victims’, they could issue these class of people with green cards to enable them re-locate  to other places across the world that accept such practices as it may not be necessary for them to remain Nigerians.
“Generally, the authenticity and sources of figures generated by AI are worrisome.  Regrettably, the military high commands were never contacted for clarification or guidance.  The Defence Headquarters on its own made concerted efforts to meet with the country management of AI to discuss related issues without success, as they had consistently failed to show up.
” This reaction of AI connotes that the body in Nigeria could had been sponsored to frustrate conflict resolution efforts towards peace and positive development of the nation.  The deliberate falsehood peddled by AI could cast the nation and its security apparatus in bad light.
” Meanwhile, AI does not seem to see anything wrong about the insurgents’ activities and known criminals until security agencies rise to the occasion of effectively containing their actions. It could be noted that anytime the AFN has reasonable assurances of getting military hardware and or expendables to further its operations or are recording remarkable successes, the AI as an organization would come forward with falsehood to weep up anti-Nigerian sentiments within the international community.  These are evident in the AI reports from 2011 to date.
“Such reports had made in roads to the US congress a couple of years back leading to the invocation of Leahy Law against Nigeria at the peak of the Boko Haram insurgency. The current report could have been ill-conceived to frustrate the on-going US-Nigerian anti-terrorism cooperation. It could then be posited that the aim of AI in Nigeria is to cripple the country’s security apparatus through cheap blackmail in order to hold back necessary collaboration.
” The AFN has both constitutional and moral responsibility to protect Nigerian Citizens and cannot suddenly engage in mass murder as portrayed by AI. The AI reports are at variance with and do not reconcile the information we are collecting from the field on daily basis making these sources suspect.
“This is to inform the Nigerian public and the International Community that the AFN exhibit professionalism in its operations. Therefore, it is not proper an organization in the class of AI to incite the Nigerian public and the international community against them.
” Currently, the AFN is bringing sanity to security challenges in the North East and other parts of country.  The Nigerian Military does not in any way condone indiscipline or breach of set regulations, let alone want on killing of citizens or destruction of property.  It is worthy to note that, the AFN regularly collaborate with the International Committee of Red Cross on training of personnel on laws of armed conflict and International humanitarian law. Troops of the AFN are guided by Rules of engagement and Standing Operational Procedures which are explicit on how to conduct operations.
“It is also worthy to note that, since 2015 the military high command have introduced training of troops in Human Rights and Laws of Armed Conflict.  These are compulsory courses in all AFN institutions which are yielding with positive results.
” The AI is therefore requested to liaise with the Defence Headquarters for clarification on any matter regarding military operations before putting up inaccurate reports. Such reports are also capable of hurting the reputation of AI itself which would not be the best for the society in terms of accountability.  The Nigerian public and international community are hereby requested to disregard the current Amnesty report, keep faith and confidence in the AFN.”
  • In defence of snakes

    In defence of snakes

THE incident remains fresh in my memory. It was an early harmattan morning in 1974, my first year in secondary school. I had finished the morning duties – fetching water for my college father and sweeping the Form Three classroom before braving the biting cold to shower near the school dam. It was time to dress up and get set for the assembly.

My uniform of a green pair of shorts and a white shirt was lying there, neatly arranged behind my seat in the classroom. I pulled off the dirty shirt with which I did the early morning chores, pulled out the white shirt, put it on and buttoned up. I was already running late. Chief Guy Gargiulo (GG), a born teacher and humanist of the finest kind, never tolerated late coming to the assembly- one of those dreaded routines at Ajuwa Grammar School, Okeagbe – Akoko, Ondo State.

It was for prayers, Bible reading and singing of soul-lifting hymns. But it could all turn sour if GG got angry and needed to use the cane. He would be screaming and swearing, “Bloody hell.” Ah. What a terrifying experience for us the junior boys who had to strain our ears to make out why theoyinbo was angry. He would be talking so fast, fuming and vibrating like a huge boom box working at full capacity.

I grabbed my shorts and jumped into them. Then, I noticed that the right pocket was unusually heavy. I pushed my right hand into it to find out why. The object in there was soft and slimy, like a nylon bag. As I pulled it, I discovered that it was long. I looked down to find out what it was. I saw the tail of what looked like a long snake and began to scream. I couldn’t pull off my shorts. Neither could I grab the snake and fling it out of my pocket. What if it decided to bite me? My mates were laughing. To them, it was fun. To me, it was hell. I was yelling. One of the boys displayed some courage, moved close, a stick in his hand, and flogged out the snake. It fell gently on the floor, immobile. It was a dead snake with which somebody had decided to pull a fast one on me.

My subsequent encounters with snakes at Ajuwa were full of fun. GG ensured that none of us feared snakes- the only thing he said he ever feared. The day he got bitten by one was the end of the fear, he told us. We had in the school library several books on snakes. GG kept some as pets, but he warned us never to go near a cobra. “It is deadly. If it bites you, you’re finished; o pa ri,” he would advise us. The green snake we went after and caught alive any time.

I felt good recently with one of GG’s snakes playing on my neck when I visited his The Plaedi home on a massive rock in Okeagbe.

You can therefore imagine my disgust and anger with what is fast becoming a grand design to demonise snakes, following the confession of an official of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) that a mysterious snake swallowed N35m cash belonging to the agency. JAMB has suddenly become a testimony to the claim that the anti-corruption war is on, with Prof Isha-q Oloyede leading the battle.

Where are our animal rights activists? Here is another crude attempt to blackmail an innocent animal and nobody seems to be raising a finger in anger over these attacks. When President Muhammadu Buhari returned from his medical trip, he could not resume work in his office. We were told that rats had seized the place. Construction giant Julius Berger was called in to flush them out.

Even before the President’s return, his wife Aisha had been talking about hyenas and jackals who would be kicked off the corridors of power upon the arrival of the lion.

“Some criminals have also blackmailed cows, using the poor beasts of burden to destroy farmlands that represent many years of sweating and toiling. Should the landowners complain, they pounce on them with AK-47 rifles, killing, maiming and burning. Everything is blamed on the poor cows for whom the marauders claim they are fighting.”

In the heat of  Nnamdi Kanu ‘s Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) whirlwind of protests, the military launched Operation Python Dance I to fight criminals in the Southeast. Many wondered how a python was going to dance. Before the early sounds of the drums that would herald the dancing python, Kanu had engaged his feet. He fled. To date, his whereabouts remain a subject of serious contestation.

That was when I suspected that a grand conspiracy against snakes was in the offing. Monkeys seem to be lucky. They are accused of causing monkey pox. Ebola is associated with some animals, none in particular but those that are of special delicacy, popularly called bushmeat. There are also chicken pox, bird flu and others associated with animals.

Never in the history of ethology has it been proven that snakes could devour cash. Now, a court is set to hear how this happened. Many zoology giants and renowned criminologists are said to be on their way to Nigeria to witness the landmark case; Federal Government versus Philomina Chieshe, who claimed that a snake swallowed N36m she kept in her office.

I am told by sources who claim to have seen the charges, that Chieshe will tell the court the denomination of the cash – was it in N1,000 or N500 notes?  Or N200 or N10 or N50? How long did it take the snake to swallow the cash – one hour? One day? Three days? Are there witnesses? Why did Chieshe not raise the alarm? Was the snake induced to do it?

What kind of snake was involved in this mysterious venture? Python? Corn snake? Viper? Cobra? Rattlesnake? Carpet Viper? Male or female?

JAMB  has meanwhile suspended Chieshe – apparently to enable her assemble her legal team. Lawyers, by the trainload, I gather, are said to be warming up to join her defence. They will, according to sources, submit that the court has no jurisdiction to hear the matter as it borders on mysticism. If the court refuses to listen, they will ask that the snake be subpoenaed.

As the court clerk searches for the snake to serve the summons, the legal giants will counter-sue JAMB, claiming N1b damages for making public a piece of information Chieshe gave its officials in strict confidence, thereby trampling on her right to hold  and protect such esoteric confidentialities.

Should the court insist on the trial, Chieshe will simply be advised to check into a hospital, live well and return home when the dust must have settled and the term would have been served out doing the case. Everybody will go in peace; justice is served.

Snakes have now become an-endangered species. Fortune-hunters are killing them in a desperate bid to extract the N36m. Yet, our animal rights activists are sleeping. A politician was saying the other day that if the incident had happened in Ekiti State, Governor Ayo Fayose would have assembled all the master hunters –dane guns, headlamps, amulets, charms and all – to retrieve the cash up to the last kobo. Anyway, can we force anybody to emulate Ekiti?

Besides, snakes have become the subject of offensive jokes. I chanced upon a video yesterday. A woman comes out of the bathroom to find his son on all fours in the living room. Crawling, like a baby. Shocked, she screams: “Blood of Nebuchadnezzar. Dami, what are you doing?”

“I’m practising for my new job to be a snake.” The woman grabs a bottle of holy oil and cries: “Blood of Jesus. You’ll never be a snake. I anoint you in the name of the father.”

Unyielding, the boy replies: “Mummy, that’s the new hot job in Nigeria o. Snakes are swallowing things all over the place and they say you keep whatever you swallow. One has just swallowed N36m. That’s $100,000. Let me do my snake o.

The mum screams, “N36m!”  She drops the bottle of holy oil and begins to crawl. “Mummy what are you doing?” the bewildered boy asks his mum. She replies excitedly: “We are a snake family.”

And this, just in from a friend: “I’m just leaving the bank now. I went to drop bitter kola around the premises because of snakes. I no wan hear say anything do my money.”

The situation is not without a redeeming feature, however, nevertheless, Senator Shehu Sani (APC Kaduna …) was reported to have led some snake charmers from his constituency to the JAMB office in Abuja to help should there be more snakes trying to swallow what does not belong to them. Now snake charmers can no longer complain that there is no work.

Many unemployed youths are now training to become snake charmers.  Some pubic-spirited lawyers are encouraging them to incorporate an association so that untrained hands do not hijack the trade in this age of quackery.

The rich are said to be thinking of how to get some snakes as pests. The bright idea is that if they keep their cash in the bellies of snakes, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detectives will never get them.

  • Youth and defence of impunity

    Youth and defence of impunity

There is no doubt that we live in a country where youths tolerate impunity with sympathy. Apart from the obvious fact that ours is also a clime where money equates success; it is also a place where the misuse of power is better appreciated by the youth even when actions taken are not in conformity with their will and pride. It is very possible to enthrone a king; it is not possible to reign for the king.

The reign of a king in his palace has reduced the palace to a mere edifice and not a kingdom in spirit. This is evident by the impunity that has been swaggered into what they tagged as the ‘change governance’ in Nigeria.

‘Terrible’ is the situation at hand, treachery is what Nigerians in some part of the country have been forced to go through, but more terrible is what the youths have done to themselves. When our youths know better, they would do better in things that favour them only. I have come across youths, who took pride in the recent body language of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration on the lingering issue of the massive killing of Nigerians in Benue State by the herdsmen. The state governor had made it known that 1,878 persons were killed between 2013 and 2016. In the same period, 750 were maimed, 200 missing and 99,427 households were affected with property worth billions destroyed. Over hundred persons had been killed in wake of recent attack in Benue State. To make the situation worse, similar killings are being perpetrated in other parts of the country.

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Association is a new phenomenon in the rise of ethnic chauvinism that has no regards for the law. The killings orchestrated by the herdsmen showed they are well trained, well paid, well organised and well armed to stand as army of invasion and wage war against a nation. As grievous as the herdsmen attacks on farmers were, it seems to be nothing to the government a mere clash that poses no security threat to security. What a leadership! This is truly a ‘change government’ indeed.

President Buhari has failed woefully to stand up in defense of Nigerians by not declaring the group a terrorist organisation nor proscribe it. The action of the president is not only treacherous but cantankerous. The president, from a detailed news research, had only deemed it fit to talk about the menace of the herdsmen as just a mere clash between herders and farmers. At another occasion, the president trivialised his stance by saying that the perpetrators were not Nigerians but armed foreigners from Mali and Libya who have infiltrated the local herdsmen community.

To worsen the matter at hand, just barely 48 hours after the mass burial for the 73 victims of the recent herdsmen attack, the Vice President of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Association threatened more bloodshed if, according to him, the Benue State government did not scrap their Anti-Grazing Law. This is nothing but impunity. A group threatening bloodshed publicly and the government is smiling at such impunity. Well, it is no coincidence that the president is Fulani. The murderous herdsmen may have been emboldened by this and thought they have all the rights to kill and get away with murder. What stops the president from ordering the immediate arrest of the leaders of the herdsmen threatening the peace and security of our country?

The activities of the herdsmen have attracted widespread condemnation by various organisations yet the group is being pampered by the government. By implication, it shows a tacit official approval of organised killings. The National Assembly also showed great concern. The legislative arm had given a resolution that every state in Nigeria has the right to enact their anti-grazing law. This law, if enacted, would curb excesses of the herdsmen. I am aware Buhari had instructed the Inspector-General of Police to tactically relocate to Benue and Zamfara states. This step does not guarantee that the evils perpetrated in Benue and other affected states would stop anytime soon. The president would have done more good by declaring the group has a terrorist group which is obvious from their actions.

I know it does not cost the government anything to wage full war against the herdsmen. The leadership of this nation is not just bad but excruciatingly bad, especially as far as this herdsmen issue is concerned. The annoying part of this is that the youths are not lending their voices to force the government to do the needful. One could rarely see the major social media influencers talk about the issue. This is bad. It goes to show that most of the vibrant youths on social media are beneficiaries of the present government and as thus, they prefer to remain silent. They have failed to use their media power to ensure or compel the government to do the needful.

I remember vividly that it was the uproar of youths on social media that made the Inspector General of Police to make effort in ending the various shed of brutality perpetrated by men of SARS nationwide. They were lots of condemnation by the youth and this influenced the restructuring of the unit.

If the so-called influencers can put the government on its toes on issues affecting them directly, why not do same on issues affecting their constituencies. I guess their assignment is only to abuse and trend facts that are meant to unseat leaders of the past which they achieved.

It is time for the social media influencers to embrace the fate of the dark hour and ensure they put the president on his toes as they did to the immediate past president. It is high time they stopped giving defense to the impunity created by the herdsmen by not advocating against the silence of the president. Funny enough, we know the social media influencers and their individual roles. History will judge their actions if they fail to lift their constituency for good.

  • Fire kills triplets, brother in Jigawa

Fire kills triplets, brother in Jigawa

A fire outbreak has killed Triplets and their brother in Hadejia town, Jigawa, according to the Spokesman of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the state, Mr  Adamu Shehu.

Shehu told the reporters on Monday that the fire was caused by a spark from an electric appliance.

He gave the names of the triplets as Hassan Sale, Hussain Sale and Muhusin Sale, and their elder brother, Aliyu Sale, all of the same family.

He said the incident occurred on Jan. 20 at about 10:45 p.m.

“On Jan. 20, at about 10:45 p.m, there was a fire disaster at the residence of one Alhaji Sale Tela of Tudun Tanda quarters in Hadejia town.

“The fire caused the death of triplets and their younger brother namely: Hassan Sale, Hussaini Sale, Muhsin Sale aged 5 and Aliyu Sale aged 2.

“It also consumed property worth of thousands of Naira.

“The causative agent we suspect is an electric spark from a water boiler,” the spokesman said.

  • Mai Shayis: In defence of Ganduje

SIR: Up north, in our hills and valleys, rich planes and fertile lands, we have a certain problem with what constitutes a job. Yes, what exactly is a job?  It is either we set the bar so pathetically low, when for example you find our uneducated and unskilled brethrens going all the way from Kano to Port Harcourt just to sell garden eggs; or we set it unrealistically high when our educated folks would take either a blue collar job or none!

While in plain sight in between these dysfunctional extremes are entrepreneurship, entrepreneurs and money. Lots of it. This explains our poverty in abundance and how the southerners effectively control the economy and all entrepreneurial commands.

“Mai Shayi” is a food entrepreneur.  He is our uneducated folk desperately looking up rather than settle as a maiguard or a truck pusher. That is the spirit.  However, our ‘educated’ white collar job-seeking mob fail to see it that way. To them a job means a certificate, salary and perhaps a suit to match them all with. In the process, conveniently missing the fact  that all the Mc Donald’s and Starbucks  they so love to patronize in Europe and Asia are just other “Mai Shayis” organized, supported and regulated by their societies.

While government is planning capital intensive projects that will benefit the elites in the society it must also not forget to do so for its masses that form the bulk of the population.  People should note that while  millions of Naira might seem insignificant to a certain class of people,  couples of thousands of Naira is a life changing sum to other millions in other classes of people in our society.

Stupefied  by the clangor a move by the Governor of Kano State elicited, as an indigene, I chose to instead pull back and assess things pragmatically. Understandably, tea business may not fall into a typical category of craftsmanship; however it is every bit as good  as it would primarily help in keeping people off the streets while remarkably increasing the economic growth of our communities, just as other acquired skills are perceived to do.

Unemployment has been identified as the biggest challenge of Kano State, hence the recent “Mai Shayi” empowerment may not be unconnected with Governor Ganduje’s resolve  to invest in the development of skills, talents and entrepreneurship of women and youths to appropriately address it.

Therefore, any programme that seeks to boost people’s capital base should receive all the accolades it deserves. A few interaction with these beneficiaries would convince any skeptics of the huge impact these empowerment programmes have had on both their trades and families. A well to do might dismiss such gestures easily perhaps due to lack of being in constant touch with the grassroots but certainly anyone in touch with the masses at the grassroots will marvel at the initiative and its potential impact on the economic activities of the common man.

I theefore maintain that “Mai Shayi” empowerment is a laudable and realistic move by His Excellency to address the unemployment issues bedeviling the great center of commerce. Unless these issues are continually managed, the future for the Kano youth is bleak and would remain ominous for a long time to come.

It is quite puzzling and unacceptably hypocritical how the same people who once cheered the mass Kano weddings during the previous administration suddenly felt slighted by  Ganduje’s Mai Shayis empowerment.

A government that chooses amongst other things to encourage the economic growth of thousands of its downtrodden masses should be applauded and appreciated than the one that chooses to do nothing or engage in wasteful spendings and white elephant projects that end up as abandoned projects with massive capital waste. I am with Ganduje on this one.

Reps probe multi-million contract scam in Defence ministry

The House of Representatives Tuesday mandated its committees on Defence, Army and Public Procurement to carry out a comprehensive Investigation on the alleged multi- Million Contract scam in the Ministry of Defece.

The resolution of the House was sequel to the passage of a motion of Urgent National Importance by a member, Hon. Tajudeen Yusuf (PDP Kogi).

The lawmaker said that the media space has been awashed with an alleged duplication, misappropriation and mismanagement of a multi- million Naira contract in the Ministry of Defence.

“Some high ranking appointees and officials in the Ministry of Defence were allegedly involved in the contract scam that had gone viral and not in sync with the efforts of the Federal Government to fight corruption,” Yusuf said.

According to him, the contract was for the relocation and refurbishment of level 2 Hospital under the United Nations Multinational Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali.

” The Level 2 Hospitals which are funded by the United Nations and awarded to countries who contribute troops/ police to global peace missions, carry out limited surgeries including life, limb and organs on officers and men on military duties.

“The scandal blew open following United Nations directive that Nigeria should move the Level 2 Hospital from its present temporary camp at the Timbuktu airport in Mali to the more secure new UN Super Camp also in Timbuktu..

“That in a desperate bid to cover its tracks, the Ministry of Defence in February 2017 allegedly awarded a contract for the refurbishing and relocation of the Hospital to a Contractor who had zero experience in installation of Level 2 Hospital.”

Yusuf said that the Ministry also flouted procurement guidelines of the Bureau of Public Procurement after getting presidential approval.

“Nigeria has been asked to withdraw its remaining contingents to the United Nations African Mission in Darfur consequent to its not meeting the UN’s August 2017 deadline for the relocation of the Hospital to a new location.

“The shady deals allegedly perpetuated by top functionaries in the Ministry of Defence have led to Nigeria losing the deployment of level 2 Hospital to Rwanda as directed by the UN.

” Due to the selfish and greedy antics of some officials at the Ministry, of Defence, Nigeria has gone down from No. 5 to No. 9 in troops contributing country global rating and dropping from No 1 to No. 5 in Africa and in the African Union,” he said.

When the Speaker of the House, Hon. Yakubu Dogara called for a vote on the motion, it was passed with majority votes.
