  • How I was defiled, by four-year-old girl

A FOUR-and-a-half- year-old pupil of Chrisland School, Lekki Lagos yesterday told an Ikeja Sexual Offences Special Court how her supervisor, Adenekan Adegboyega, defiled her two years ago.

She was led in evidence by the prosecutor, Mr B.T. Boye, before Justice Sybil Nwaka.

Asked why she was in the court room, she said: “I am here to explain all the bad things that Mr Adenekan did to me”.

When asked how many times she was defiled, she said “two times.”

She said: “The first time, he did it in his office. The second time was in the corner outside. He put his hand inside my wee wee. It really pained me. When I screamed, he covered my mouth with his hand. When I tried to scream again, he tightened his hand on my mouth”.

At this stage, the prosecutor asked her to identify Adenekan in court but she refused to look at him in the dock.

But when confronted with the pictures of the defendant, she identified her aggressor and retorted: “I remember now. He put his wee wee in my mouth”.

Asked to show where Adenekan’s wee wee was, she touched the mid region of her body to indicate the location of a male’s manhood and to the lower region of her body to indicate her private parts.

She denied visiting Adenekan in her office except on the day “when he did bad thing to me”.

Asked by Adegboyega’s counsel Olatunde Adejuyigbe (SAN), if she loves drawing, she said: “I love drawing but I don’t want to draw in this place. It is very scary.”

The judge then intervened and calmed her.

When confronted by the defence counsel that she was tutored on what to say, the girl replied: “nobody told me what to say when I come here today”.

Earlier under cross examination by Adejuyigbe, the girl’s mother said her daughter told her that Adenekan abused her in his office and at a nearby corner.

The case continues on May 21.

  • ‘Some parents make it easier for children to be defiled’

‘Some parents make it easier for children to be defiled’

‘Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi is the coordinator of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team. The team was set up in 2012 to respond to issues of rape, domestic violence and child abuse. In this encounter with HANNAH OJO, she speaks more on the factors fuelling abuse of minors.

Is your office engaging in activities geared towards sensitizing the boy child on sexual abuse?

This year, we are bringing more attention to the issue because last year, we carried out a research and the result showed how 85 percent of those abused as minors grew up to abuse children later in life. The result of the research has influenced the way we engage children in our advocacy as we are now insisting that the focus should not be on girls alone but on boys as well.  No gender is immune to sexual violence. People used to think that it’s only girls that could be defiled but it’s not true. Boys can also be sexually abused as data has shown.   When you have data, it helps to strategize awareness and propose policies that are structured to the needs of the society.

Your data shows there have been cases of sexual violence in places like Alimosho and Kosofo, is it right to say that these cases happen more in low income areas?

We aggregate our data to the 20 local governments in the state but there are some local governments that are densely populated like Alimosho and Kosofe, so it should not come as a surprise to see a lot of cases in those areas. It doesn’t mean that it’s only those areas that these vices are being committed. Perhaps it is also because of our awareness in those areas that these vices are being reported. After the awareness, we see an increase in reportage, but I wouldn’t say that it is only in low income areas because sexual and gender violence is not a respecter of class or creed, religion or gender. It can happen to anybody.

Apart from the excuse of poverty and depression, what other factors are fuelling sexual violence?

According to the data gathered from our research, the first factor is the abused abuser factor.  Another factor was that some people said they had poor performance with their peers –this is real data. Some said it was as a result of poor erectile dysfunction and they were tempted because the children obviously would not laugh at them. However, it is important to state that some people actually make it easier for children to be defiled. The idea of leaving children with neigbours is condemnable. Parents are not supposed to leave their precious jewels with any kind of person.  Perpetrators don’t just pounce on children, they groom them.  They gain their trust, get their confidence and it can start with something so basic but you will be amazed what that can do to a child over a period of time.  Some people will say why didn’t the child speak up? It’s because the child did not know better and that is the danger we have in sexual violence. Society most times often blame the victim, even when it is a child. These are the things perpetrators take advantage of and use to groom children.

It is often said that many victims of sexual violence are often discouraged from pressing charges as a result of delayed justice?

The testimony of the child must be corroborated; that is why we ensure that the police conducts proper investigation and that is what has informed our engagement with the Nigerian Police Force in terms of training, empowering and equipping the force with relevant materials. That is one of the reasons why we have relevant support units across 11 divisions in the state. When it comes to legal issue, you cannot be emotional and sentimental, it is facts that can be proved and the evidence. That is why the police is critical because they are the first respondent. There are also the role medical officers play; if a survivor presents himself early, it is very likely that evidence can be preserved and that will help aid investigations.

A DNA lab was launched in November, it is at Odulami Street in order to help victims of sexual violence to able to preserve evidence and ensure justice. In the DPP, we also have the Sexual Offence Unit dedicated to addressing these issues. At the High Court, we have the sexual offence and domestic violence court, so we expect that we start to see an increase in the number of cases that get to court as well as an increase in conviction. We will also start to see a reduction in the time it takes to prosecute these cases.

Since you have been the coordinator, can you recall the most pathetic case you have handled?

All cases are bad, especially when it involves children because they are vulnerable. Who is supposed to have prevented them? Who is supposed to have ensured that it did not happen? It is the adults. Those are the pathetic cases, especially when it is obvious that these cases could have been prevented if different safe-guarding measures were put in place. When an abuse happens to a child, it means that secondary care givers have failed in their responsibility.

  • ‘How I was robbed, defiled by one-chance operators’

A 33-year-old woman, Bose (surname withheld), has cried out over the influx of one-chance operators in Ikorodu, a Lagos suburb.

Bose, who said she was robbed, defiled and assaulted by the bandits on December 21, told The Nation that the criminals operated with taxi between 4:30 am and 6 am.

She implored Police Commissioner Edgal Imohimi to instruct his men to contain the ugly trend, saying another young woman had fallen victim.

Bose told The Nation that she boarded a cab at CAC bus stop in Gberigbe, Ikorodu, around 4:30 am, which was the usual time she left home for work.

She said: “When I entered the car, I discovered it was tinted such that from inside you cannot see outside, but from outside you can see inside.

“There was someone by the driver who I thought was a passenger. What I just discovered was that I was the only person at the bus stop when they picked me. Immediately I entered, they locked the doors.

“I was trying to figure out why, but I thought it was because they’ve not got to where they would pick other passengers.

“To my amazement, I discovered that immediately we got to a junction on Igbopa road (the road that leads to Abule Eko Ijede), they turned and immediately the guy sitting with the driver just turned on the music and increased the volume.

“Out of annoyance, I tried to caution him that it was too early in the morning. The next thing he did was to slap and grab me by the collar. He started asking me questions and told me that they would deal with me. That how dare I challenge them? Did I think I was smart?

“I told them they could have anything they wanted but not hurt me. They asked how much I had in my account. They took my pin, my card and wallet and searched my bag.

“I had about N5,000 in my wallet, which were N200 mint notes. They took them, they took my phones, and the four ATM cards I had in my bag, including my mum’s. They beat me up.

“I had an opportunity to escape, I opened the door and tried to escape but they caught me. They told me to take off my clothes and I asked why?

“The guy beside the driver tore my clothes and said if I didn’t cooperate, they would kill me inside the bush. It was early in the morning and people were not passing.

“I begged them, but the guy gave me a blow on my face again and he defiled me despite my pleas.

“After everything they left me there stranded. No money, no phone, nothing. I was there pacing back and forth.”

Continuing, Bose said eventually she saw a path, followed it to a road where she saw a motorcyclist, who took her home.

Asked if the criminals withdrew money through her Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards since they coerced her into giving them the pins, she said she told her brother to call the banks to block the accounts when she got home.

“I was writhing in pains following the beating and sexual assault. Yes, I gave them the pins to the ATM cards. But when I got home and told my family what happened, my brother immediately called the banks and we requested that the cards be blocked because I was robbed.

“I was taken to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) where my brother worked. They took me to Mirabel Centre and administered drugs to me. The incident occurred on a Thursday and I went for treatment. On Saturday, I went to Area ‘N’ Police Station to report the incident and the first question they asked me was why I was just reporting the incident?

“I wondered what kind of question was that and told them I had to go and treat myself first because my health was most important. The scars were still visible, my face was swollen and they could see it.

“I made a statement and they promised to investigate the incident. I didn’t hear anything from the police again until last week when they called to tell me that another woman had fallen victim and had filed a complaint.

“They said I didn’t include the colour and registration number of the vehicle in my statement. Yes, I remember the colour. It was a silver Nissan car. But I could only visualise two digits in the registration number. I saw 11.

“Those guys really dealt with me. Even my waist was swollen. It was a terrible experience. I am speaking out because it is fast becoming a menace. There is need for the police to stop it before it is too late.

“That was how Badoo started and because it was not stopped in time, it became something else. Now that these criminals are hunting young, working class women at Gberigbe and are succeeding; they’ll soon move to other parts of Ikorodu, unless they are stopped.”

Command’s spokesman Chike Oti said the incident would be investigated.

  • RAPE: 13-year-old victim’s father cries out for justice

RAPE: 13-year-old victim’s father cries out for justice

At almost 90, he could be the great grandfather of the 13-year-old girl. But he first defiled her when she was eight months old. When she clocked 13, he raped her again. Irked by the octogenarian’s audacity, the girl’s father is crying out for justice. Gboyega Alaka reports.

WAS in our room stitching my bra, when Baba called me to help him fetch water. I got up, went to collect the bucket and made to proceed on the errand, when he called me back into his room; I thought he was going to say something else pertaining the errand, but suddenly, he took something from the back of a chair, poured it in his mouth and started commanding me. He told me to pull off my clothes, my pant and then he pushed me on the bed and forced himself on top of me. I tried to scream, but nobody heard me. It was around 10 o’clock and the whole house was quiet. Even my brothers with whom I was washing had gone out….”

That was the story of a 13-year-old girl, who was allegedly defiled by an 80-something year-old grand-father in their tenement house on Amosun Street, Badore, along Igando-Iyana-Iba Road on the outskirt of Lagos, as told by her father, Mr. Olalekan.

The father, who is inconsolable, has insisted that he wants justice meted out to the perpetrator, Mr Omobolaji Ayoade, whom he says, is notorious for such acts and other fetish stuff in the compound. His determination, he says, stems from the fact that this would not be the first time he would be violating the same girl, alleging that he once fingered her, when she was just an eight-month-old baby, causing her to bleed from her private part back then.

Mr. Olalekan said this particular incident happened at about 10am on Monday. “Her two elder brothers said they came back from where they had gone to charge their phone and suddenly realised she was nowhere to be found. I wasn’t at home, but they said they started calling her name and couldn’t fathom where she could have disappeared to within such a short space of time. One of the brothers said as he stood at the entrance of the bungalow apartment, calling her name and hoping she would appear, they heard faint cry of die die (gently gently) but did not know where the sound was coming from nor fathom whose voice it was.

“My son said it was after she had been standing there for about fifteen minutes, that he saw her come out of the old man’s room, her eyes red. When she asked what she was doing in Baba’s room and why her eyes were red, she said nothing.

“Meanwhile, when she refused to answer, the brother said he went to confront the old man to ask what he did to his sister, but said the old man simply ignored him. And that is another very bad habit the old man also has. No matter the issue and however hot or raging, he would not say anything or even come out to show any kind of concern. By this time of course, the neighbours had gathered and wondering why such an elderly man could be involved in such a dastardly act. This is the same man that had been accused of several fetish activities and sexual harassment in the compound.

Olalekan said it took the mother’s threat to get the story from her daughter. “Probably because of the charm he used to hypnotise my daughter, she refused to say what the man had done to her until her mother arrived and threatened to deal with her.

“In my daughter’s account, she said she screamed when he was about to force himself on her but help did not come. Besides, she said he had locked the door, a jam key, hence there was no way she could free herself. Even when he mounted her, she said she kept crying but the old man did not release her until he finished the evil act.” Olalekan said.

In the course of the outrage, he said the old man’s lover, who works in Radio Lagos, arrived and was briefed. Another neighbour, wife of the landlord’s brother, also arrived. It was she who went to confront him, since he simply ignored all our questions and shut himself up in his room. She told him he couldn’t just keep quiet and ignore everyone in spite of such grave accusations. She also threatened to involve her son, who is a policeman. I was told he confessed to her at that point that he indeed assaulted the girl and pleaded for forgiveness, saying it was a mistake. I also learnt that he had earlier confessed to his woman friend.

    Violated at 8 months

Clearly agonised, Olalekan said, “It was this same old man who assaulted this same girl by fingering her when she was a mere eight-month-old. As usual for babies, she had crawled into his room then, but when she crawled out, the mother noticed that her private part was dripping. She initially thought she had poo-pooed, as is usual with babies and made to wash her. It was then that she noticed that she was actually bleeding from her vagina, an indication that her private part had been tampered with. The whole neighbourhood was stunned; but after much plea that we should not expose the little child to unnecessary negative publicity and stigma, we agreed to let it pass. Besides, he was warned that if such a thing happened again, we would have no option but to take the matter to the police. So now that this has happened again, I sincerely do not wish to let it pass or have it swept under the carpet.

Luckily, the doctor who examined her at that time told us that her hymen was not broken and that she would heal and everything would get back to normal. In fact, that was the main reason I agreed to forget the matter,” Mr. Olalekan said.

    At a loss

Olalekan said he however didn’t take any concrete action until Thursday, mainly because he didn’t know how to go about it. Yet, he said the matter worried him gravely. “The matter would not leave my mind. It was like a festering sore on my mind, and I could not sleep at all. In fact, I didn’t realise how much harm the matter was doing to me until I asked my sister, a nurse, to check my blood pressure and found that it was alarmingly high. When my boss – I work as a private driver for my boss and his wife – saw how the issue was bothering me, he told me to go and take care of it. The person they first introduced me to in our area said they only handle human rights and divorce. She told me this is a totally criminal case and directed me to Alausa, Child Protection Unit, Ministry of Youth and Social Development. There I tabled my case and they advised me to report at a police station nearest my house. They also advised me to go to a hospital, so she could be examined and evidence documented, since it was now Thursday, three days after.

    Dad alleges police cover-up

“Fortunately, one of my neighbours, a woman, whom he had been harassing with sexual demands knew some officers at the Igando Police Station and offered to go with me. There we laid our complaints and we were handed over to a police officer. But unfortunately, the officer started making funny demands and giving me conditions. He said I should bring five thousand naira if I wanted them to handle the case at their station. This was in spite of the fact that I told them that I had been directed to them from Alausa. He also said I would fuel the vehicle and that I would buy him lunch.

“I was a bit taken aback when the police said my daughter only said the old man only fingered her in her statement. As far as I’m concerned, that must have been out of fear or an aftermath of the spell he cast on her, because she already confessed to the mother. Even when the man’s lover called her to swear that the man indeed had sex with her, my daughter swore with the bible. Besides, when her mother examined her that afternoon, she said she saw whitish substance in her private part and the whole place was ruptured.

“The police also said the old man denied all the allegations – whether sex or fingering. But the doctor that examined her at the Mirabel Centre, LASUTH, Ikeja, where I was directed to, said she had been recently penetrated and that her clitoris was sore, an evident of forceful penetration.

“What I however find most annoying is the fact that the police seem to be handling the matter lightly because she said it is fingering. Isn’t fingering a crime, even if that was all that transpired? Is it a small crime under the law to sexually violate or defile a little girl by whatever means? I want the governor to step in and help me. That is why I went to Alausa. This is not a small matter to me. I may not have money but justice should not be served only to the wealthy.”

Olalekan is also irked by the information he got that it was a police woman at the same Igando Police Station, who bailed the old man. He said this has given him so much confidence to now go about saying nothing can happen. He said he has also been flaunting the fact that he was not put in a cell on the only night he slept there.

We’ll take the case to court when we get the medical report – Police

The police officer in charge of the case, who gave his name as Yusuf, however denied all allegations of cover-up or conspiracy, insisting that he can only prepare and take the case to court when he gets the medical report from The Mirabel Centre, which he had not got as at the time of speaking (Thursday last week). He said Olalekan should get them to bring the report to the police station, so he can proceed with the case.

“As we speak, we have three different versions of the incident. The little girl said the man only fingered her; the man himself said he did not touch her at all, while the parents are insisting that there was real sexual penetration act. If I were to prepare a case for the court now, I can only present the girl’s statement. That is why I am waiting for the medical report.” Officer Yusuf said.

As for the allegation that Ayoade (the old man) could have bribed the police, Yusuf looked up sharply and said: “Have you seen the man? Does he look like someone who has money to offer?”

Yusuf also denied that he was bailed by a police officer, saying he was bailed by his relation, a man.

About the demand for money, he said all he told Olalekan was that he would have to provide mobilisation whenever he has to take the matter to court, asking almost rhetorically, “Is it my money that I will be using to take the accused to court?”

We are ready to testify against him – neighbours

When this reporter visited the home of the Olalekans on Amosun Street, deep inside Badore in Igando, the suspect, Omobolaji Ayoade, was not at home. His door was locked, but two of the neighbours were on ground to tell their versions. The first, who incidentally is a relation of Ayoade, Mrs Otolorinwa Oladejo, said she wasn’t exactly at home when the incident happened. She had gone to the other side of town across the expressway. “On getting back, the girl’s mother rushed to call me to come and listen to what happened. She then told me the whole story. Omobolaji (Ayoade) may be my brother, but what he did to the little girl is not good. He first started with the girl, when he violated her with his fingers, when she was a mere eight-month-old. He’s so perverted and has been involved in all sorts of fetish acts in the house. Three days after the rape case, he also poured blood everywhere. Just yesterday, he poured some liquid stuff that looked like oil mixed with water everywhere. Only God knows his motive.”

Another neighbour, Nkemakolam  Stephen, said she wasn’t at home but made time to go with the girl’s father to the station because she couldn’t bear to see the girl and her parents suffer such ignominy without any recourse. “That man is an extremely wicked and heartless man.  Five months after I moved in here, he poured charm on the floor for me. Often, when I am bathing, he would come near the bathroom and start peeping. When I spread my undies on the cloth line, he will go there and start sniffing at them. Even when I am with my partner, who only visits from time to time, he will come to my window and start peeping. But if I can let all that pass, I cannot let this wicked act of defilement on the innocent girl go unpunished.”

He penetrated me with his manhood – girl

When this reporter met the little girl briefly, her account was indeed moving. She said, “He took something from behind the chair and poured in his mouth and started commanding me to remove my clothes. He then pushed me on the bed and forcefully put his manhood in my private part.”

When asked why she gave a different version at the police Station, the little girl could not utter a word. At this point, her mother also said this could be an aftermath of the charm the old man used on her. “Even as we speak, my daughter still shivers whenever she sees him,.”she said.

We can compel the police to take case to court – Child Protection Unit

When this reporter visited the Child Protection Unit of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social development, Alausa, Ikeja, the officers on duty, who pleaded anonymity admitted to receiving the case, but said they were the ones who directed her to make a report at the Police Station in Igando. They said they will only take further actions, which include compelling the police to take the case to court, if they are foot-dragging or suspect any kind of conspiracy or cover-up attempt.

    Brickwall at the Mirabel Centre

Before visiting the Child Protection Unit, this reporter had however paid a visit to The Mirabel Centre. The intention was to follow up on their effort and at least be sure that they were on top of the case, but the officials were virtually hostile and would not confirm or decline that they had received any case concerning the girl in question.

All attempts to explain to the officials on ground that this reporter’s mission was not to scuttle the case or pry fell on deaf ears.

“If you like go to Itoro (the agency’s Executive Director) or go to the Perm Sec, we will not tell you anything. We do not know the girl you’re talking about and will not tell you anything. Mirabel has treated over 2,000 cases, so we do not know the particular case you’re talking about.”

  • Court told how dad defiled his five step kids

An Ikeja High Court heard yesterday how a man, Kingsley Eloko, defiled and abused his five stepchildren.

Eloko is standing trial before Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye on  a two-count charge of child defilement and abuse contrary to the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011.

    Eleko pleaded not guilty.

Led in evidence by the prosecutor, Mr B. T. Boye, the matron of Christ Church Evangelical Miracle and Ministry, Mrs Sandra Innocent, said the children and their mother were known to her.

She said their stepfather was also known to her even though he rarely comes to church.

The witness said the defendant got married to Dorothy Christian, a mother of five, in 2012, but that the marriage produced no child.

She said the children were products of Mrs Christian’s previous marriage.

According to the witness, the problem   started when Dorothy returned from a trip to discover that her children were not at home.

“She asked questions and sought the husband’s explanation which revealed that they had fled home. Both parents went to the police and filed a complaint to declare the children missing in order for proper search to be conducted. This later led to the discovery of the children at their local church, Christ Church Evangelical Miracle and Ministry”, she said.

She said Faith, Gift, Joy, T. Show and Joshua, the only boy among them, sought refuge in church for a week after they fled home.

The children, she said, bore Christian as their surname and were referred to as G.O’s children, adding that she was close to them and counselled them like other church members.

One fateful Sunday, Mrs Innocent said, in the course of her counselling, Joshua told her that they had issues with their step-father.

“Faith, the eldest child, told me that whenever their mother went for a vigil or travelled, their father would bring in the four girls and spread their legs before he penetrated them one after the other. They fled their house and stayed in the church as they could no longer endure the abuse which they were subjected to”, she said.

The witness said she brought the matter to the church, following which it was they agreed that the children be sheltered and their educational needs provided for.

The children, the witness said, were put in schools, adding that Faith and T.Show opted to learn a trade.

Mrs Innocent said the children fled the church when their step-father came after them, prompting a price case.

She said it was later discovered that the children were being housed by a member who later left the church because of some issues.

The children, the witness said, were returned to the church following the plea of their mother who said she wanted them back after reconciling with her husband.

The church, Mrs Innocent said, however requested that the man should come for deliverance before the children’s return home.

The witness said the police arrested their step-father based on reports of the children’s abuse.

The defence counsel, Mr Worer Oduagbaka, pleaded for time to cross examine the witness, because of just took over the matter.

The matter continues on July 10.

  • Defiled by her grandfather & uncle

DEAR Temilolu, I enjoy reading your column. I live in a rural area in Ogun State and saddened with the rate of teenage pregnancies. To worsen matters, most of these girls come from very poor homes and lack self-esteem. They believe being in a relationship at an early age would complement them but they are impregnated by miscreants and the cycle of poverty continues. I speak to some of them and discourage them from their backward mentality but they feel I want to date them. I hope girls/ladies in Nigeria can discover themselves and stop thinking only men can complement them. No man wants to marry a liability. Keep up the good work.

    Segun Michael

    Dear Aunty Temilolu,

I am a girl of 15. My grandfather slept with me at the age of 7 and my uncle did same when I was 12 years old. What should I do because whenever I see them, I am always so sad? I need your help please!

    Anonymous

My darling, precious, glorious, dignified, world-famous and heavenly celebrated Nigerian sisters,

a lot of damage is going on the life of the average Nigerian girl which would catch up with her in the future and make her life most unenjoyable if drastic measures are not taken in the nick of time. It is most disheartening that a mere child would be defiled by her own grandfather and later her uncle – a most despicable, inhuman act and a serious spiritual matter. This poor child has experienced incest and I am afraid if she didn’t report the matter to any adult at that time and went through a series of deliverance then her life is likely to be in serious danger with devastating consequences awaiting her in future. This is because, biblically, incestuous relationships carry curses which can alter the course of one’s destiny. I am quite sure, in her ancestry, there must be a curse attached to incest. No doubt, her grandfather and uncle’s act has opened up her life to demonic invasion and she may have to deal with a lot of ill-luck, disfavour, stagnation, inherited curses and bad spirits trailing her grandfather and uncle already waging war against her destiny; in fact believe it or not, right now she must be satanically bombarded and she probably doesn’t know. I tell you, even if she has given her life to Christ and “old things have passed away,” if she doesn’t go for a series of deliverance to get rid of the fatal effects of incest, may she not wake up some day in future and commit suicide! Yes, it’s that bad. I know a lot of you have secretly suffered such and I advise you run as fast as your legs can carry you and free yourself from the doom that may be lurking around waiting for you in future. Who knows? You may have been suffering the dire consequences. This is a very serious matter and not one to be taken lightly. Thank God, He is merciful and has the final say over our destinies. It’s up to you all to acquaint yourself with Him and get Him firmly on your side so He can help you.

    My sweet anonymous,

I hope you confide in a responsible and trusted family member/adult as soon as possible so you can take the right steps to deliverance. I imagine how terrible you feel when you see those 2 paedophiles but you just have to brace up and get over the experience though you have to be strong-willed.

Oprah Winfrey – billionaire T.V.mogul, one time most influential woman in the world and the greatest black philanthropist in American history – was molested by her cousin, uncle, and a family friend starting from when she was nine and impregnated at 14. Joyce Meyer, a minister of God who has one of the largest ministries in history, was continuously sexually-abused by her father from childhood till she left home at 18, yet they are two of planet earth’s most influential women today. How my stepfather defiled me, by eight- year-old girl

AN eight-year-old girl defiled by her stepfather, Mr Happiness Essien, claimed that he started having carnal knowledge of her last year.

The Basic Four pupil narrated her ordeal to The Nation on the premises of the Esther Child Rights Foundation, an NGO in the Akowonjo area of Lagos where her mother first reported the case. Recalling the initial experience, she said: “It happened in the room at daytime.  It was during the holiday, and my mummy went out, so it was just me and Uncle Happiness at home. When I shouted, he told me to shut up. He said I should not tell my mummy, that if I tell her, he would stop giving me money.”

The minor, who spoke in a subdued tone, confessed that the accused had sex with her up to six times and threatened her not to disclose the deed to anyone. She was compelled to open up on a recent trip to Benin with her mother when the latter discovered unusual developments in her child’s body. The mother, a 30-year-old graduate of political science from the University of Benin who preferred not to give her name, said she became suspicious when bubbly sounds emanated from her daughter’s vagina. “When I started noticing that she was farting through her vagina, I knew someone was molesting her. So I threatened to report her to my brother and she got scared. When I asked her who was doing it, she said it was Uncle Happiness (my husband), and the food in her hands dropped”.

The mother added that peculiar movements between her husband and 8-year-old daughter raised initial misgiving. “Sometimes,” she said, “when I return to the house unexpectedly, I get to knock for a very long time before the door would be opened. The excuse she usually gave for the delay is that she was playing games with Uncle Happiness. There was another time I came back to the house and she was tying towel, even though she had her bath before I left. I accused her, and the man came out to say he told her to go to the bathroom since she complained that her body was itching.”      An intuition that the person molesting her daughter might be her husband preceded the development but the mother wanted the girl to confirm her hunch. Fighting back tears, the woman who is nursing a nine-month-old son for the accused, said the sordid left her all but broken. “I carried her for 11 months and two weeks. I dropped out of school when I had her. My mates graduated in 2008 but I had to graduate in 2012 because I wanted to take care of her. I forfeited my travelling out plans because of her.”

The girl had been taken to the Mirabel Rape Centre in LASUTH where various tests and treatment were conducted on her.

The accused has since been charged to court. The 31-year-old man who works as a marketer with SKF Company was charged to an Ikeja magistrate court on Thursday. He was arrested after the mother of the victim reported the case to the police station in Afonka, Shasha, Egbeda.

It was learnt that the chief magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, remanded him in the Kirikiri Prison and adjourned the case till May 25 for Directorate of Public Prosecution’s legal advice.

Mrs Esther Ogwu, the founder of Esther Child Rights Foundation, the NGO advocating retribution for the victim, said she is bent on pursuing the case to a logical end. She said: “We have been seeing several cases of children being molested, and it is very sad. We are watching to ensure justice is done. As far as rape issue is concerned, it is a crime in Lagos state. It is not something you can beg for. Why a lot of people don’t come out is because they are afraid of the trauma. So I think, for now, the most important thing is for the accused to face the wrath of the law.” The victim’s mother, however, appealed to the public for her safety and the financial responsibility of catering to her two children. “Ever since the case has been on, I have been noticing strange movements around my house,” she said. “Many times, some people would just come and shine torchlight in the middle of the night. My husband’s family has been causing uproar. I believe they are also waging a spiritual battle against me because, as I speak to you now, I am not myself.”
