The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake has hinted that testing of minerals samples will henceforth be conducted in the country as against the former practice of depending on foreign laboratories in carrying out the test.

He said this on Thursday while commissioning of the ultra-modern mineral analysis laboratory in Sabon-Wuse, Niger State built African Natural Resources and Mines Limited (ANRML).

The minister who was quoted in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori noted that the effort of the ANRML was in tandem with the federal government’s resolve to promote local value addition in the mining sector.

Alake who emphasized that the laboratory, the first of its kind in Nigeria, aligns with the key objectives of repositioning the mining sector in line with his 7-point agenda.

“You are not only aligning with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda but also contributing to our ministry’s 7-point agenda, with local value addition being a critical component. This internationally certified lab will significantly benefit the sector, as it will handle mineral samples that were previously sent abroad for testing, positioning Nigeria as a key player in global mineral analysis,” the minister stated.

Alake showcases digital geo-data platforms to attract global mining investors

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has urged global investors to explore Nigeria’s digital geo-data platforms for comprehensive information on the nation’s vast mineral resources.

Speaking at the ongoing Mines and Money Conference at the Business Design Centre, Islington, UK, Dr. Alake highlighted Nigeria’s adoption of digital technology to simplify business inquiries and ensure transparent transactions.

In a statement by his Special Adviser, Kehinde Bamigbetan, on Wednesday, the Minister identified three key platforms— the Nigerian Mineral Decision Support System (NMRDSS), the Electronic Mining Cadastral (EMC+), and the National Geo-Data Centre— as essential resources for prospective investors.

Describing the NMRDSS as a Web application that provides read-only access to geo-scientific and geo-economic data, Alake said it allows users to analyse mineral occurrence locations and make informed decisions regarding mining activities.

He said: ” By providing publicly available data about the geology and mineral wealth of Nigeria, this dynamic resource, updated regularly to make the data as current as possible, enables the investor to explore the environment of the Mineral occurrences of choice. It answers queries of hydrology, demography, geography, urban planning, and transportation.”

On the EMC+,  the Minister said the online, real-time system for administering mineral titles throughout their life cycles is efficient and transparent.

According to the Minister, “This means investors can research and plan their application for titles remotely as far as they have the data required as inputs in the application process.” He noted.

Alake then assured mining business leaders that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is committed to the acquisition of more geological data to improve the value of the platforms, adding that plans afoot by the administration to fund more geological research and leverage the results of research by private and public institutions to build more data.

On certifying the quality of the data, Alake, who doubles as the Chairman of Africa Minerals Strategy Group comprising African mining Ministers, saluted the efforts of geoscientists in Africa for developing a new coding system to certify research reports.

He harped on the need for value addition and beneficiation in the downstream segment of the mining value chain, stating that recent exploration has positioned Nigeria as a key player in the supply of critical minerals to the world.

“The deliberate investment in accurate geoscientific data, particularly for critical minerals such as lithium and rare earth minerals, has positioned Nigeria as a key player in the global transition to a green economy. This transition aligns with our commitment to sustainability  and our role in the global fight against climate change.” He said.

Alake who had earlier engaged investors making enquiries about mining at the exhibition booth of the country, urged major mining companies to partner with the Tinubu administration in its efforts to diversify the economy in favour of the solid minerals sector, adding that the collaboration would unlock the country’s vast mineral resources.

“The future of Nigeria’s solid minerals is brimming with promise. Our doors are open to partnerships and we invite you to join us on this transformative journey.

Chief executives at the event include Barrick’s President and chief executive Mark Bristow, Chief Executive Officer, Traxys, Mark Kristoff and General Counsel, Anglo American, Kate Southwell.

Alake’s marching order to panel: perform or be fired

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, yesterday told the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) to improve their performance within 90 days or face severe government sanctions.

A statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori, said the minister read the riot act to the committee while declaring open this year’s annual general meeting (AGM) of MIREMCO chairmen yesterday in Abuja.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the committee’s performance, Alake emphasised that it was MIREMCO’s core responsibility to interface with sub-nationals, local communities, operators, and the Federal Government to minimise conflicts.

He said: “The Federal Government is supposed to rely on your reports on the activities or inactivity of operators and whether they comply with environmental regulations and all other sundry regulations governing the sector.

“We are not impressed by the execution of that mandate, and we will not hesitate to wield the big stick if, after 90 days, the committee fails to turn a new leaf.”

Citing Section 19, sub-section 3g of the Nigeria Minerals and Mining Act (NMMA) 2007, which makes it mandatory for MIREMCO to act as a liaison among the subnational authorities, the local governments, the communities and the operators, Alake noted that the provisions of the Act had not been effectively executed by the committee.

He added: “If provisions of the Act had been effected by MIREMCO, the spate of interference that we witness by the sub-nationals, in some instance, local governments shutting down mines, making policy pronouncements that are outright unconstitutional, would have been minimal.

“It is the failure of this body that has given rise to states dabbling into areas that are beyond their constitutional purview.”

The minister stressed the role of subnational authorities in MIREMCO’s operations.

He said the chairmen and five of the 10 committee members were nominated by state governments, stressing that their interests were already represented under the committee’s statutes.

Reading the riot act, Alake urged the chairmen to ensure that members improve their performance or face sanctions.

The minister said the Federal Government remained committed to ensuring effective management of the nation’s mineral resources and the address attendant environmental concerns.

He said there would be periodic engagements with the committee members and promised to push for improved funding for the committee next year to bolster its capacity to effectively fulfill its mandate.

Alake pushes for trade expansion between Nigeria, UAE

SOLID Minerals Development Minister Dr. Dele Alake is pushing for enhanced trade relations between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with emphasis on solid minerals.

In a statement yesterday, his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori quoted the minister to have made the case while hosting the United Arab Emirate (UAE) Ambassador to the country, Ambassador Salem Shaeed Al Shamsi, in his Abuja office.

Reflecting on the historical significance of the over 50-year robust relationship between the two nations, Alake stressed the need to deepen the ties through expanded trade in the mining sector.

The statement reads: “In the mining sector, we see significant opportunities for collaboration. While there is considerable trade in gold, much of it remains illegal, with a large portion of Nigerian gold ending up in the UAE unlawfully. We propose working together to develop strategies to curb illegal gold trade and establish a regulatory framework that legitimizes this trade, allowing both countries to maximize their benefits.”

Alake highlighted Nigeria’s wealth of globally sought-after minerals and noted that the UAE, as a major hub for mineral trade, stands to gain from a strengthened partnership in the mining sector.

The minister also expressed interest in partnering with the UAE on technology transfer to advance Nigeria’s mining sector.

Dele Alake, the quintessential communications strategist at 68

    • By Kehinde Olaosebikan

Having beautiful women is a way of assessment or a display of wealth by men in the olden, but not too long ago, days in the place where I come from. Up till the 60s and 70s in my part of the world, to prove or show that you are rich and have truly arrived, you must have a stunning beautiful woman as a wife or a courtesan.

A Yoruba socialite elite must possess a beautiful woman to accompany him to parties and other social events. The sanmori as they are called, in Yoruba, flaunt their beautiful chicks at gatherings to the admiration of others. They all giggle, laugh, throw banters, and hug one another in the display of their mistresses.

However, if there was any who did not attend a function with his beautiful lady or felt that his is not as beautiful as that of a particular friend, such men feel no shame or any embarrassment in demanding from the beautiful side chicks of their friends to get them a similar charmingly beautiful lady to keep or marry. They would simply ask the tempting lady of their friend ‘E ba wa wa eni kan to ri bi yin,’ meaning ‘Kindly find for us, a beautiful lady just like you.’

As the practice later advanced, the elitists graduated from not just having beautiful ladies alone, they added brain and responsibility to the qualities of such ladies. Thus, in addition to having full lips, high forehead, broad face, small chin, small nose, short and narrow jaw, high cheekbones, clear and smooth skin and wide-set eyes, all the assets that make a stunning woman, their ladies must be intelligent and responsible as well.

Late Tatalo Alamu, the Ibadan-based popular Dundun and Sekere Maestro, later promoted this in one of his albums to a means of ‘toasting’ ladies. Tatalo, eyeing one of the delightfully beautiful ladies in the city of Ibadan then, sang ‘E ba un wa obinrin to ri bi yin o, e ba un wa obinrin to ri bi yin; t’o gbe ounje f’egbe t’o tun gb’awo bo, e ba un wa obinrin to ri bi yin.’ This means:  Help me find a woman that is as beautiful, intelligent, dutiful and responsible as you.

Tatalo, like most of the elites’ socialites, wanted not just a beautiful lady but the one that has all the best qualities in a woman. He was desirous of the vintage or the quintessential woman.

It was this old Yoruba rich men’s style of demanding from a friend’s lady of her like in beauty and intelligence and the music of Tatalo Alamu that played in my subconscious at the special party put together to celebrate the 68th birthday of the incumbent Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Henry Oladele Alake, at the Benue Hall of Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja Friday night.

As every normal human being loves beautiful things, men and even fellow women do watch admiringly, when they see stunning ladies and this is the case of Mr. Dele Alake as a communications strategist. He is admired, loved, respected and wanted by all, keenly.

In my practice as a consultant in internal and external communications management, Dele Alake is the model when people are looking for spokespersons. A number of state governors including two from my state, Oyo, had asked me to look for “somebody like Dele Alake” for them to serve as either information commissioner or chief image maker for their states. In fact, it is usually the case when governors and chief executive officers of big organisations are in search of communications experts. ‘Can you get us somebody like Dele Alake’ is always a challenge.

Read Also: Tinubu felicitates Dele Alake on 68th birthday

No doubt, Nigeria is blessed with many great communications specialists and we have seen them practice their trade outstandingly. However, Dele Alake is Dele Alake. Nobody can be like him.

As the Yoruba elites graduated from having just beautiful ladies to searching for courtesans with beauty, brains and good conduct; wanting the best in their women, people in authority are now on the hunt for communications experts who are all-rounders.

Rising to the peak of his career in journalism as Editor and thereafter becoming Chief Press Secretary, Commissioner for Strategy and Information and CEO of global media organisations, Dele Alake is an embodiment of success in journalism and communications strategy. He is indeed the quintessential Communications Strategist in all ramifications.

However, now that the owner of Dele Alake or his buddy (as Mr. Bayo Onanuga described him), President Bola Ahmed Tinubu refused to make him the Minister of Information and Strategy, we may, on a lighter note, help the  President too, to look for somebody like Dele Alake. E je ki a ba President wa na wa eni kan t’o da bi Dele Alake!

    Happy birthday, sir!

FG, states to eliminate impediments against mining development – Alake

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake has reaffirmed the federal government’s resolve to collaborate with the sub-nationals to eliminate impediments hampering mining development in the country.

Alake was quoted in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori to have given the commitment on Friday while hosting Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal in his office in Abuja.

The Minister assured his guest of the federal government’s readiness to work with the Zamfara State government to leverage the state’s mineral resources for economic development.

Stressing the need to eliminate impediments stifling mining development in the state, Alake emphasized the importance of Zamfara State to the country’s mining sector.

“Zamfara is one of Nigeria’s most resource-rich states, particularly in solid minerals. It is essential for all levels of government to collaborate in responsibly exploiting these resources and ensuring that the revenue benefits both Zamfara citizens and Nigerians as a whole,” the minister stated.

Lawal noted that his visit aimed to enhance cooperation between the federal and state governments in addressing challenges in the mining sector.

“We discussed security concerns and strategies to better utilize our mineral resources for the benefit of both Zamfara and the nation. We need to explore the necessary infrastructure to attract investors to solid minerals,” Lawal said.

It will be recalled that recent federal government’s efforts to improve the mining environment in Zamfara include the elimination of several banditry leaders and ongoing security operations designed to create a safer investment climate.
