Bayelsa United 43-man delegation arrive in Congo

Bayelsa United’s 43-man delegation finally arrived in Congo Brazzaville late Thursday, ahead of today’s CAF Confederation Cup second round first leg clash against FC Konzo.

The match is slated for 2:30pm this afternoon.

The team departed Murtala International airport, Lagos around 7:30pm aboard Arik Airline and arrived in Congo late Thursday night.

The team which had been earlier scheduled to travel on Wednesday was stranded in the country due to lack of funds.

SportingLife gathered that the team left their Ijebu-Ode camp hurriedly early Thursday to Lagos to catch their flight when they received clear signal that the money for the trip had been released.

SportingLife understands that 18 players, four coaching crew, club’s chairman and secretary Thelma Agara, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF’s) Head of Club Competition Emmanuel Adesanya and Obinna Ogba, who is the leader of delegation, made the trip.

Others are the back room staff and some club’s supporters.

The club’s media officer, George Ameli told SportingLife that their late departure to Congo won’t affect their match.

“The message to Nigerians is to keep faith in the team. We are in joyous mood and the late departure won’t have psychological effects on the team. We will do our best to get decent results,” Ameli told SportingLife.

  • Sanusi vs nnpc: governance through delegation by abdication

In A Multi ethnic nation where the dominant ethnic groups and their political leaders try to outwit each other using the minority as pawns to guarantee their hold on to power and where the leadership of the minority group often behave like a woman with three husbands to the detriment of their impoverished people on whose behalf they pretend to flirt, I really don’t see anything wrong in president Jonathan motor of ‘if you don’t trust others, how do you expect others to trust you?’ I think the problem is not this politics of subterfuge, but the president penchant to delegate and abdicate responsibilities to those who we now know are not driven by altruism.

For President Jonathan, his trusted friends can hardly err. They are beyond reproach. If perchance they, either as governors or ministers are involved in what , Augustus Aihkomu, Babangida.s vice, termed ‘misapplication of funds’ as against misappropriation, and got indicted by the judiciary or house committee probe, they will be given a presidential amnesty to enable them, in the words of Doyin Okupe, ‘continue to contribute to the development of their nation’. The president is therefore slow to action no matter the degree of malfeasance of his trusted friends such as Petroleum minister Alison Maduakwe, and NNPC Andrew Yakubu the Nigeria new oil wizards and the minister of Finance who often talks and acts as if she is doing Nigeria a favour by climbing down from World Bank to be our minister of Finance.

The president shields his friends .That the petroleum ministry, PPPRA presided over the theft of about N1.7 trillion, that Okonjo Iweala paid those who in the words of Audu Ogbe, a former PDP chairman, never imported a bottle of fuel’, even after arrogantly telling Nigerians she needed to pay those who imported fuel on behalf of government, that Otedola was culpable for inducing Lawan Farouk with bribe, count for little because they are the president trusted friends.

Sanusi Lamido, the outgoing CBN governor is not one of the president trusted friends. This is why I think his current crusade against the president men which started with a private memo to the president blowing the whistle about unremitted 49.8 billion dollars to the federation account was initially ignored. When the letter was finally leaked to the press after three months, an irritated president was alleged to have tried to force Sanusi to resign.

A reconciliation meeting of CBN, NNPC and ministry of petroleum later confirmed #10.8 billion was ‘unreconciled’ according to Ngozi Iweala, the finance minister. The Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Deizani Alison-Madueke, and the NNPC Group Managing Director, Mr. Andrew Yakubu claimed the original 10. 8 billion dollars which was the shortfall they admitted existed as at July 2013 was spent as follows: NNPC withheld 8. 76 billion dollars for subsidy, 0. 4599 billion as holding cost of strategic reserve and 0.761 billion as pipeline crude oil and product losses.

But Sanusi insists such expenditure without appropriation by the national assembly was illegal. Besides, the Yar Adua administration having discovered the whole kerosene claim was a scam had by a memo signed by his Principal Secretary, Mr. David Edevbie on June 15, 2009 given a directive to stop the so called subsidy on kerosene. Sanusi presented evidence of the directive. The petroleum minister however has no counter directive even from president Jonathan .Trying to pass the buck; she said she wasn’t a minister in 2009 as if government is not continuity. She then hazards a guess. Those who flouted the directive probably did so because according to her kerosene is for the use of the poor.

Her argument ignores the fact that the subsidy was stopped by Yar Adua because it was discovered if anyone was benefitting from the scam call kerosene subsidy, it was the marketers and government officials and not the poor. And to further demonstrate the arbitrariness of that president has delegated power to, the minister said Yar Adua’s directive was never gazeted. It will appear under Jonathan presidency, trusted ministers can unilaterally decide initiate and implement policies, and flout presidential directives because they are not ‘gazeted’ and move on to spend 8 million dollars a day on phantom subsidy.

But The CBN was not done. He has further claimed that 20 billion dollars was yet to be accounted for. The Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has at the Senate Committee on Finance hearing on the alleged missing 20 billion dollars also admitted there ‘is ‘a puzzle over unremitted funds to the CBN’ which she would like an independent forensic audit to resolve. “Our judgment is that a proper examination of these documents requires technical expertise beyond the capacity of the reconciliation team.”Therefore, we believe we should have an independent forensic audit to manage these submissions,”

But not too long ago NNPC and the supervising ministry of petroleum said Sanusi as a banker lacked the capacity to understand accounting processes. Suddenly we are been told there is a need for a forensic expert to trace humongous 20billion dollars.

The chairman of the committee, Ahmed Makarafi, has even added another dimension. Apart from the forensic audit by the reconciliation group, he said that the committee would reconvene on Feb. 20 to enable the Attorney General of Federation to give a legal advice on the issue.

But what has become apparent so far is that the president trusted friends spent over N500 billion within four years purportedly on kerosene which was hardly available at filling stations and if when available sold for about N150 as against government N50 controlled price. For over four years the government appeared impotent unable to meet the demand of consumers or sanction those who sell above the advertised subsidised rate.

The president burden is immense. But I am not sure if delegation by abdication and seeking refuge in church can lighten the president burden. Last Sunday following the massacre of about 109 of our compatriots by those who are probably not Nigerians in the besieged Bornu state after the initial killing of 52 innocent Nigerians and an ambush of eight soldiers all within one week, the commander in chief was in RCC church in Banana Island Lagos, to thank Christians for their prayers, claiming it would have been worse but for their prayers and that of other Nigerians. Our revered pastor Adeboye prophesied that Nigeria would be great. Of course there is perhaps no other time our nation needs more prayers and prayers warriors than now, but I think it will be more symbolic if we try to identify more with our suffering brothers by carrying the crusade to their besieged cities and villages.

Lawmaker praises govt’s delegation to the UN

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Justice, Hon. Ali Ahmad, has commended the Federal Government’s delegation to the United Nations (UN) for its presentation of the country’s report at the 17th Session of the Universal Periodic Review of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.

He said the delegation, led by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed B. Adoke (SAN), reflected on Nigerians’opinions on issues, such as death penalty and same-sex marriage.

He said Nigeria is sovereign, noting that once laws are made in accordance with the constitution, no gcountry, however, powerful, can blackmail it. If death penalty is abhorred by these agenda-setting countries at the United Nations, they should convince Nigerians and seek amendment or abrogation. But so long as the death penalty, which is reserved as a deterrent in protecting human life, is part of our law, no grand standing can deter Nigeria, he said.

He continued: “Even more inconsequential is the pressure being mounted on Nigeria on same-sex marriage, a matter that is not recognised by Nigeria and many African countries as a human rights issue. We have gone past the pre-colonial era and Nigeria must have a voice in the comity of nations on new issues that should or should not emerge as second- or third-generation human rights. No nation can force it on our throat, not even through the United Nations. It is recalled that at this year’s International Bar Association conference held in Boston earlier this month, the powerful gay lobby was forced to admit that Africa was still hostile on same-sex, and that they would concentrate their energy on South America.”

Ahmed added:  “No one should be left in doubt that so long as Nigerians detest same-sex marriage, the House of Representatives will continue to criminalise it. If by any stretch of imagination it becomes unconstitutional, the National Assembly will not hesitate to amend the Constitution in that regard.”

ROAD CRASH FALLOUT: NFF delegation visits Ganaru at hospital

A three-man delegation of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) yesterday paid a visit to the management of Kano Pillars over last Thursday’s car crash involving six members of the club’s technical crew.

Pillars’ Technical Adviser Mohammed Baba Ganaru and five other technical crew members were on their way home from Ilorin after Wednesday’s 0-3 Federation Cup quarterfinal loss to Warri Wolves around 2:45pm, when the accident happened along the Kano-Zaria Road, about 100km to Kano State.

The delegation was led by NFF Chairman Youth Development Committee, Ahmmed Yusuf Fresh, Nationwide Chairman, Muazu Kawu, and NFF Head of Competitions, Dr Mohammed Sanusi.

The men were received by Pillars’ Chairman Abba Yola, who led them to Baba Ganaru’s hospital bed at the Nasarawa Hospital, Government Reserved Area (GRA), Kano.

Of the six occupants of the car that crashed, Ganaru is the only person still receiving treatment at the hospital. The five others have since been discharged on doctors’ directives.

Delivering the NFF’s message, Fresh said the federation received the news of the accident as a shock, but was praying for the quick recovery of those injured.

“We are here on behalf of the Federation to sympathise with the management of the club, the technical crew and entire people of Kano State over the incident.

“The NFF president Aminu Maigari and entire board received the news as a shock but we thank God that despite the unfortunate incident all of them are still alive today. We want to say that we are with you and pray for good health for those involved in the accident,” Fresh said.

Responding on behalf of the club, Yola thanked the delegation for their visit.

“On behalf of the club I want to say a big thank to you. We really appreciate your visit. This visit will go a long way as a morale booster to the team and the entire staff of the club.

“Your visit indicates that we are not alone at this time of our problems. We will continue to keep you posted as the event unfolds.”

The delegation also donated the sum of One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100, 00) for the upkeep of the injured coaches before departing for Abuja.

  • ‘Shehu of Borno to lead Fed Govt’s delegation to Hajj’

The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Umar Garbai, has been appointed as the National Amirul Hajj and Leader of the Federal Government’s delegation to the 2013 Hajj.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, said this yesterday in Abuja at a stakeholders’ meeting on the 2013 Hajj operations organised by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

He said the appointment of Garbai was in line with the agreement that Hajj delegation should always cut across the leadership of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).

Garbai is the NSCIA Deputy President.

“Therefore, another Amirul Hajj for the 2014 Hajj is expected to emerge from the southern or western part of the country,” the Sultan said.

He said with the 20 per cent reduction in the number of those to make up the Nigerian contingent to the 2013 Hajj, priority would be accorded first timers.

The delegation, according to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, is to be led by the Senate President, Senator David Mark.

Mark is to represent President Jonathan and the Federal Government at the match because the President cannot be physically present in Johannesburg to lead the cheering for the Super Eagles due to his official commitments in London and Paris.

The President charged the delegation to ensure that the members of the team are properly motivated and in the best possible spirits to win a resounding victory for the country tomorrow.

He also tasked the delegation, which included Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State and the Minister of State I (Foreign Affairs) Prof. Viola Onwuliri, the Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade and the Minister of State (Works), Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, to reassure the team of his full support and best wishes for victory.

Their performance, he said has undoubtedly re-established Nigeria as a major power in international soccer.

He urged the team to go out against Burkina Faso on Sunday with the greatest determination to win a final victory that will bring immense joy and happiness to the millions of Nigerians at home and abroad who have had their pride restored by the triumphs against Ethiopia, Cote D’Ivoire and Mali, and are praying for ultimate success at South Africa’s National Stadium.

NFF wants Amaechi to head AFCON delegation

The Nigerian Football Federation has appealed to the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Chibuike Amechi, to head the delegation to the African Nations Cup kicking off in South Africa on Saturday.

Sources in Port Harcourt told futaa.com that the pair of NFF chairman Aminu Maigari, and the head of technical committee, Chris Green, were at the Rivers State House in Port Harcourt on Monday, to put the request to the governor.

The sources further confirmed that the governor politely turned down the request.

He was said to have told the NFF officials that he is too busy at the moment to take on such an assignment that will remove him from his desk for the entire durations of the Eagles stay at the tournament.

He only promised to be at the first game of the Super Eagles, and the Final, if they make it that far.

The reasons for trying to appoint the Governor as Head of Delegation is not clear, given his past scathing remarks about the way the NFF handles its finances.
