    Glo delighted by Falcons victory

    National telecoms operator, Globacom has congratulated the Super Falcons for defeating the Lionesses of Cameroon to lift the African Women Championship(AWC) trophy for the seventh time.

    In a superlative performance, the Falcons  trounced Cameroon  2-0 in the final match of AWC in Windhoek, Namibia on Saturday.

    Globacom in a press statement on Sunday praised the team for not only winning the Championship but also qualifying for the next Women World Cup in Canada.

    “It was a delight seeing the Falcons play with so much confidence and cohesion which made it possible for the team to dominate the match and outclass the Cameroonians,” Globacom said in the statement.

    Desire Oparanozie scored the first goal for the Falcons in the 13th minute through a free-kick while the second goal was scored by Asisat Oshoala in th 44th minute when she latched on a pass from Francesca Odega.

    The telecom company said it was glad that the Falcons have regained the title they lost at the last AWC, thereby re-confirming the team as the undisputed champions of women football in Africa.

    Globacom congratulated the players for their focus and skills as well as the coaching crew led by Godwin Okon for their tactical superiority, adding that the team kept improving with every match they played during the competition.

    “We look forward to seeing the team perform creditably well in the next World Cup. We urge them not to rest on their oars and be prepared to fight with all their skills in order to make Nigeria and the continent of Africa very proud,” the statement concluded.

    Globacom is the major partner of the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) and official sponsor of Nigerian national teams.

    Simon Zenke said he is delighted his superb strike proved to be the match winner for his club, Sanliurfaspor in a 2-1 win over Adanaspor on the opening day of the league in Turkey.

    The former Nigeria youth international scored the match winner for his team in the 60th minute.

    “I am so delighted to score the goal, it is a great feeling for me,” Zenke told AfricanFootbll.com.

    “We vowed to kick start the season on a good note as a team and I as an individual wanted to start good too. I thank God for how it came out after 90 minutes.”

    The ex-Samsunspor striker scored a fantastic goal when the goalkeeper sent in a long kick which caught Adanaspor’s defense flat footed and he kept running at top speed, before he controlled the ball with his chest and lobbed the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.

    Nwankwo delighted with brace

    Gil Vicente’s  Nigerian forward, Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo, bagged a brace on Wednesday in a pre-season friendly against second-tier União da Madeira held at Leca.

    The Primeira Liga side recorded a 3-1 win over Uniao da Madeira, with Nwankwo scoring in the 68th and 73rd minute after Egyptian Marwan Mohsen restored parity for the Roosters.

    The 22-year-old says he is pleased that he struck twice, and has stressed that he will continue wearing the jersey of Gil Vicente despite his lack of game time over the course of last season.

    ”It was a good workout for us to try and put ourselves back in shape collectively and individually as well.

    ”The expectation for the coming season is always to do better than the last one, I believe it’s a big motivation for us,” the former Portimonense star told SL10.ng.

    ”I am 100 % focused on Gil Vicente and nothing else. Whatever the future brings will be good for me and the club.”

    In official matches, Nwankwo is yet to open his goals account for Gil Vicente since he joined the club on a three – year deal last summer.

    The 22-year-old made 15 appearances (two starts) in the topflight last term.

    Warri Wolves striker Gbolahan Salami has expressed happiness after he scored his fourth goal on Saturday against Enugu Rangers in the Globacom Premier League.

    Salami said he was happy for the victory he gave Wolves in a must-win match against visiting Rangers.

    The former 3SC star said: “This is my month and this is the best year for me. This is the year I won a medal with the national team at CHAN 2014, the year I scored four goals in four matches. It has been wonderful for me.

    “I promised to score in the mid-week game against Nembe City which Allah answered my prayers and I also promised to give my fans in Wolves a birthday gift and Allah answered it again. It shows that all my requests to Allah would be answered this year.

    “I really thank my team mates for their support because without them these goals wouldn’t have come, I just want to say thank you to them.

    “I also want to give kudos to all my fans across the country for the support I’ve been receiving from them, I vow not to disappoint them in any way. I will still try my best to score more goals to achieve my target this year.”

    Obuh delighted with Rangers’ 3-0 win over Nembe

    Rangers FC Technical Adviser John Obuh said he was delighted with his team’s 3-0 thrashing of Nembe City at the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC) Stadium,Enugu.

    “I am happy we were able to cancel out our goal deficit in the league. We now have plus two goals,’’ Obuh told newsmen shortly after the match, which was eventually concluded on Thursday morning.

    NAN reports that the match was held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium was, abandoned on Wednesday in the 78th minute because of heavy rains with Rangers leading, 2-0.

    The match was eventually concluded at University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC) Stadium because another activity had been scheduled at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.

    According to Obuh, “we are still looking forward to a better team than we have because we still have lots of work to be do.”

    “We are going to do the best against Dolphins of Port Harcourt, our next opponents. The players know the tasks ahead and we are able to make them understand that they need to live up to the people’s expectation.

    “Hopefully, we will go there and secure positive results against (Dolphins), the Garden City team,” he said.

    The Technical Adviser to Nembe City, Gabriel Samuel said the result of the match was a setback for his team.

    “The result is a big setback for my team. Surely, we will go back and work on the team’s lapses and try to cover up on the lost points as the league progresses.

    “We have to work harder and step up our work rate.

    “Beside we ought to avoid conceding many goals, it is still early so we have time to improve on our games and standing in the league,” Samuel said.

    Goals from Meshack Chibuikem in the 58th minute and a brace from Christian Obiozor in the 58th and 90th minute gave Rangers the 3-0 victory over their visitors from Bayelsa.

    Taiwo delighted with Turkey chance

    Nigeria international Taye Taiwo, who failed to shine at AC Milan, has promised great things at ambitious Turkish club Bursaspor.

    “My priority was to be transferred to a Muslim country. I will start to train. I feel ready. Bursa brought my family along with me as well. Bursa is a city that gives peace of mind and I will make the fans happy with my contribution to the team,” said Taiwo, who has joined up with Bursaspor in their training camp in Austria camp ahead of the new season.

    Two seasons ago, the experienced left-back moved to Milan as a free agent from French club Olympique Marseille, but he failed to make the grade there and was promptly shipped out on loan first to Queens Park Rangers in the English Premier League and then to Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine.

    He has now signed a three-year deal with Bursaspor, who will feature in the UEFA Champions League in the new season.
