    Delta Queens unveil squad ahead 2025/26NWFL kick-off

    With the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) kicking off this weekend, the Delta State Sports Commission has set the tone for the new football year by unveiling the Delta Queens squad for the 2025/2026 season.

    At the official presentation in Asaba, the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Onoriode Oborevwori, expressed confidence in the team’s preparedness and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing every necessary support for a successful campaign.

    Hon. Oborevwori noted that the administration remained steadfast in advancing women’s football across the state, describing Delta Queens as a “symbol of pride, resilience, and excellence” whose achievements continue to inspire young female footballers.

    With the NWFL season scheduled to begin on November 26, 2025, Delta Queens will start their quest for domestic glory with a crucial away fixture against Nasarawa Amazons, setting the stage for what promises to be a competitive and exciting season.

    Delta Queens win Miss Amnesty basketball tournament

    Delta Queens have won the fourth Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports Competition by defeating Divine Speed Academy Warri, 30–14.

    The competition: Miss Amnesty Nigeria Basketball Championship, sponsored by Tracy Macwary Foundation, was held at Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.

    Discover Academy Warri defeated Bayelsa Queens by 24-23 in the semi-finals.

    Founder, Ms Tracy Mcwary, said participants embodied a spirit of competition that the championship fosters.

    “To every player, coach, and supporter, your journey here is a testament to your hard work and commitment. I congratulate everyone,” she said.

    Mcwary said the Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports is an initiative to lift women off the streets and give them a sense of belonging in society.

    The championship saw the best basketball teams in Nigeria competing for honours.

    This edition highlighted the impact of the championship, which had shaped the girl child through sports.

    This cemented Delta Queens’ as one of the most successful in the tournament’s history.

    The sponsors expressed commitment to continue backing the programme.

    Defence Spikers win Division Two

    NAF Rockets and Delta Queens have emerged  winners  of the National Division 1 Volleyball League in the men and women categories.

    NAF Rockets beat LifeCamp VC 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-31) in their last match of the Division 1 League played at the Umuahia Township Stadium in Abia State.

    NAF Rockets finished in first position with a total of 43 points, qualifying for the 2025 Nigeria Volleyball Premier League.

    In second place is UCEM VC of Enugu State with a total of 40 points while former National Division 2 Champions, LifeCamp VC finished third with 34 points.

    Youthful Sword VC of Benue State with 29 points finished in fourth place while G-Ranks Spikers of Kaduna finished fifth with 22 points.

    Katsina United and Safety Spikers with 14 points finished sixth and seventh place respectively, Kwara United secured eighth position while Oluyole Spikers failed to appear in the second phase of the National Division 1 League.

    Meanwhile, Delta Queens (unbeaten) finished first place, Wikki Queens secured second place while Ekiti Queens won third place.

    In the National Division 2 League, Defence Spikers placed first with a total of 38 points closely followed by Wikki Spikers with 35 points to finish second place while Ajase Ipo VC placed third with 28 points.

    In fourth place are  Bayelsa United with 24 points and Delta Force secured 22 points to finish fifth place.

    Osun Spikers (eight  points), Sokoto United (three points) and Jewel Spikers (one point) failed to appear in the final phase of the 2024 National Division 2 League.

    In his closing remarks, President of Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Engineer Musa Nimrod commended Abia State Government for hosting the final phase of the Division 1 and 2 Leagues.

    He called on State East Governors to prioritise sports in order to reduce social vices in their respective states.

    Nimrod congratulated winners and participants for ensuring the leagues lived up to expectations.

    CAF Women’s Champions League: Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa stop Delta Queens

    For the first time in three editions of the CAF Women’s Champions League, Nigeria will be missing out in the club Competition slated for Cote d’Ivoire later in the year.

    Just like the two Nigerian men’s team were ousted from the CAF Champions League at the weekend on home soil, Delta Queens added to the woes of the country’s after they failed to qualify for the 3rd edition of the CAF Women Champions League.

    They were beaten 1-0 in the final of the WAFU B CAF Women’s Champions League at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin by Ghana’s Ampem Daroa.

    Ampem Darkoa struck in the 44th minute through a powerful header that caught Delta Queens’ goalie off guard and ensured the Ghanaian secured Qualification for the second time.

    Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies and Rivers Angels qualified for the inaugural edition in 2021 while Bayelsa Queens defeated Ampem Darkoa in the final of the WAFU B CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers held in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire last year.

    And thus, it has been four in a row that Ghanaian teams have edged Nigerian sides out of major competitions in a space of 18 months.

    Recall that the Ghana Black Stars edged the Super Eagles out of the World Cup just as their home based side also did the same for the Nigerian side in the qualification for the African Nations Championship, CHAN.

    CAF Women’s Champions League : Delta Queens zoom to WAFU Zone B final

    Delta Queens have qualified for the final of the WAFU Zone B CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers following their 3-2 extra time victory over Athletico FC D’Abidjan  yesterday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.

    Victory guaranteed the  team a  three million gift  from Edo state Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu who promised them One Million Naira for each goal scored shortly before the game.

    Delta Queens were given reality check when

    Athletico FC’s Melissa Behinan shot the Ivorien team ahead just after five minutes to send the whole stadium into silence as the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership (NWFL ) title holders were unable to get the equaliser in the first half.

    Respite came in the 63rd  minute when substitute, Mercy Omokwo , netted a screamer from distance to level matters for the Nigerian champions.

    The game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra time was needed to help solve the puzzle. Omokwo, again completed the comeback for the Nigerians off a superb close range finish to make 2-1 and advantage Delta Queens in the 98th  minute.

    Delta Queens extended the lead further through their skipper, Taiwo Afolabi who lobbed the ball over a distress Athletico FC D’Abidjan goalkeeper for a 3-1 lead in the 106th  minute.

    Athletico FC D’Abidjan made it a fascinating end to the game even they scored their second goal through a Nigerian, Joy Sunday in the 114th  minute.

    Delta Queens now await the winner of the second Semi-final tie between Sam Nelly of Benin Republic and Ghanaian’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies played late yesterday.

    The winner of the competition will represent WAFU Zone B at the CAF Women’s Champions League proper slated for Cote d Ivoire later in the year.
