    Attack at boundary: Police vow decisive action

    Delta State Police Command has launched a major security operation, following an attack on its officers at the boundary between Akukwu-Igbo and Ugbolu communities in Oshimili North Local Government.

    In response to the incident, Police Commissioner (CP) Aina Adesola ordered deployment of tactical operatives to the affected area, to restore order, prevent further breakdown of law and order and reassure residents of the command’s commitment to public safety.

    The swift intervention by the police led to a sting operation that resulted in the arrest of several suspects believed to be connected to the attack.

    The command said the suspects were in custody and were providing information to investigators, adding that efforts were on to track down and arrest other suspects at large.

    Condemning the attack, the CP described it as an unprovoked assault on law enforcement officers and warned that such actions would not be tolerated under his leadership.

    He said the command would deal with anyone or any group that threatened public peace or targeted police personnel.

    Adesola noted that the command would not allow extremist, secessionist, or violent groups to establish or operate within the state, assuring residents that security agencies were prepared to confront any threat to stability and public order.

    He urged residents of Akukwu-Igbo, Ugbolu and surrounding communities to remain calm and go about their lawful activities, as the command continues to maintain a visible security presence in the area.

    The police boss appealed to the public to support ongoing operations by providing credible information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects.

    He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to the protection of lives and property.

    Police gun down suspected kidnap kingpin in Delta, recover AK-47, other firearms

    The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the death of a suspected kidnapping kingpin, Liberty Kunu, following a fierce gun battle with police operatives during a recovery operation that also led to the seizure of an AK-47 rifle and other firearms.

    The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Aina Adesola, revealed this during a press briefing at the Command’s headquarters in Asaba yesterday.

    The CP said sequel to a series of complaints bordering on kidnapping, abduction, and other violent crimes linked to one Liberty Kunu, popularly known as Commander Liberty or Double Agent, and his gang, he directed the Divisional Police Officer, Sapele, to deploy all available operatives to unravel the group’s activities.

    CP Adesola said on January 17, 2026, the Command received a report on the abduction of three persons (names withheld) at Boyo Road Junction, Sapele.

    He said while being taken to a bush location, one of the victims escaped and reported at a nearby police station, noting that the remaining two victims were dispossessed of valuables worth ₦9 million.

    The CP said preliminary investigation revealed that the crime was carried out by a syndicate led by Liberty Kunu, who operated under the guise of a security volunteer group (SOS).

    He said: “Acting swiftly on this intelligence, operatives of the CP–Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), in collaboration with officers of Sapele Division, arrested Liberty Kunu and members of his gang, including Twale Golly (33), Michael Kunu (25), Israel Ugwu (30), Ogaga Power (43), and Mercy Kunu (28).

    “During the operation, five pump-action guns, one Beretta pistol, and other criminal accoutrements were recovered.

    “Further investigation revealed that Liberty Kunu was a member of the Aye Confraternity and was also in possession of an AK-47 rifle.

    “Upon confrontation, he confessed and, at about 2335 hours on 28 January 2026, led CP-SAT operatives to his hideout in Ibada-Elume community.

    “At the location, one AK-47 rifle and one locally fabricated revolver were recovered from the forest.”

    However, CP Adesola said while the team was retreating and had reached the Ibada-Elume Express Road, they were ambushed by armed hoodlums suspected to be members of the gang, who attempted to rescue the suspect.

    He said a fierce gun battle ensued for over ten (10) minutes and the attackers were overpowered and had to flee with bullet wounds, while the police operational vehicle was riddled with bullets.

    He further said: “During the exchange, Liberty Kunu and some police operatives sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to the hospital. Liberty Kunu was confirmed dead on arrival, and his remains were deposited at the General Hospital, Sapele.

    “Other arrested members of the gang remain in custody as investigations continue.”

    The Delta State Police Command said it has continued to intensify its fight against cultism, armed criminality, and unlawful possession of firearms across the state.

    The Command’s spokesman, SP Bright Edafe, said on Tuesday that in two separate operations executed with precision and rapid response, Police operatives recorded significant breakthroughs in Agbor and Warri, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace, safety, and public order.

    Edafe said on November 8, 2025, at about 1735hrs, the Command received credible intelligence indicating that suspected members of the Eiye Confraternity were mobilising at Ojeifo Street by Iduwe, Agbor. He said without hesitation, the Agbor Divisional Police Officer, CSP Michaeal Obekpa, led a coordinated deployment of Divisional Patrol Teams and the Civilian Anti-Cult Unit to the scene.

    The spokesman said, “Upon arrival, the operatives acted swiftly and tactically, arresting two notorious cult members: Agu Nnamdi, of Ohumere Quarters, Agbor, and Promise Banco, of No. 36 Iduwe by Ojeifo Street, Agbor-Obi.

    “In a desperate attempt to conceal their activities, the suspects hid a locally fabricated pistol inside a black nylon bag, but the vigilance of the operatives uncovered the weapon.

    “Both suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue, with efforts ongoing to track down other fleeing members who fled during the operation.”

    Edafe also said that in another development, on Sunday, 16th November, 2025, surveillance operatives of ‘B’ Division, Warri, under the supervision of CSP Josephine Ekebuike, were on surveillance patrol along Arubi Street off DECO Road, Warri, when they observed a tricyclist conveying two passengers and riding aggressively against traffic at high speed.

    He said the suspicious behaviour immediately prompted the operatives to engage in a pursuit.

    He said the chase continued into First Marine Quarters, where the rider and passengers abruptly abandoned the tricycle and fled through adjoining streets.

    Edafe said the operatives recovered the tricycle and conducted a thorough search, which led to the discovery of two (2) locally fabricated double-barrelled guns.

    Edafe noted: “Other items recovered at the scene included nine (9) assorted mobile phones, four (4) power banks, and a screwdriver.

    “The entire area has since been cordoned off, with intensified stop-and-search operations ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects.”

    Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, has reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to dismantling criminal networks, clamping down on cult activities, and stemming the proliferation of illicit firearms across the state.

    He urged residents to remain security-conscious and to continue supporting the Police by providing timely and credible information.

    He assured residents that all reports would be treated with the utmost confidentiality.

    He reaffirmed the Command’s determination to maintain a safe environment where law-abiding citizens could go about their activities without fear.

    The Delta State Police Command has rescued a female kidnap victim and arrested her suspected abductor.

    Spokesman for the Command Superintendent of Police Bright Edafe, made this known in a statement.

    He said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Agbor Division, Chief Superintendent of Police Obekpa Michael, his men alongside members of the vigilantes, raided a part of Oza Nogogo community, arrested Bila Halili, 30 from Kosso community and rescued Rebecca Mathew of Bodinga community in Washegu Local Government Area of Niger State. 

     The operatives said the suspect lured her out of her family home and destroyed her phone SIM card to make her unreachable before taking her away.

    The spokesman said: “Further investigation led the operatives to the victim’s mother, one Esther Moses, of Bodinga community, Niger State, who later said the victim had been missing since September 2.

    “The victim’s mother said complaint had been made to the Police in Niger State. Investigation is ongoing,” he added.

    Also, Edafe said the Eagle Net Special Squad, in synergy with the Nigeria Hunters Forest Security Service (NHFSS), led by the Commander, Eagle-Net Special Squad, Superintendent of Police Yunusa Danyaya, raided Basket market on Asaba–Benin Road, and arrested 27 suspects, recovered one fabricated firearm and large quantities of illicit drugs.

    Commissioner of Police (CP) Olufemi Abaniwonda has reiterated the importance of partnering with the community in the fight against crime.

    He restated that that security is everybody’s business.

    The CP, therefore, urged the public, to make provide them with information.

  • Police nab robbery suspect, recover arms in Delta

    The Delta State Police Command has arrested a member of a robbery syndicate terrorising three local government areas.

    The acting police spokesman, Chuks Orisewezie, in a statement yesterday, said the suspect, Emmanuel Patrick, was arrested on March 6 by the anti-robbery squad led by Masoyi Dadi.

    Upon interrogation, the 32-year-old confessed to the crime and also gave the names of members of The statement reads: “The suspect admitted partaking in three operations at Uvwie, Ughelli and Udu councils.

    “He has also led the police to the gang’s armoury where two pump action guns, four double barrel guns, one single barrel gun, one Air gun, 274 cartridges, two bullet proofs and four bullet holders were recovered.

    “The gang’s armourer, who identified himself as Udenmba Ben, has also been arrested and he confessed to the crime. He admitted being in charge of servicing the arms and supplying them with ammunition.

    “Ben said he does not manufacture guns, but repairs, buys and sells arms and ammunition.”

    Orisewezie said the police was intensifying effort towards nabbing fleeing gang members.

    The police commissioner, Adeyinka Adeleke, has warned criminals that there would be no safe haven for them under his watch.

    Adeleke, who assuring the people of the police’ commitment to their security, vowed to employ every available security apparatus to rid the state of criminals.

     

  • Police vow to arrest killers of Okowa’s aide

    Delta State Police Command has said it will be swift in unravelling the circumstances surrounding the murder of the Special Adviser to Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Youth Development, Mr. Ngozi Ijie.

    Police Commissioner Mr. Yinka Adeleke, in a statement by acting spokesman Chuks Orisewezie, said the command could not yet ascertain the motive of the killing.

    Ijie, popularly called Ngozi, was reported shot dead by gunmen last Friday night in Ekpan community, Uvwie Council Area.

    The community has since been in panic, as residents fear there may be a reprisal by the deceased’s supporters.

  • New home for Delta police special squad

    The headquarters of the Delta State Police Command was agog with excitement as men of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in their numbers witnessed the commissioning of the ultra- modern office of the Eagle-Net Special Squad and observatory post/transit camp within the premises of the Delta State Police Command by Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

    In addition to the harvest of infrastructural projects, 20 operational Siena mini vans with specially fabricated cell facilities for detention of suspects were also presented.

    It was a carnival atmosphere as scores of policemen and women in freshly starched uniforms beaming with smiles walked smartly, barely able to contain their excitement. It was joy unconfined.

    The buildings and operational vehicles were a jointly funded project by State oil interventionist agency, Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) and Delta State Security Trust Fund.

    Although the project was initiated by AIG Alkali Baba Usman during his tenure as the State Police Commissioner in 2016, it was brought to fruition by the newly appointed CP Muhammad Mustafa, who has renovated the facilities at the Delta State Police Command in record time.

    The inauguration of the edifices mark an end to the sordid and harsh living conditions many policemen were subjected to  in the course of duty;  no longer will policemen live in makeshift  cramp quarters , exposed to the elements, but  these long suffering policemen and women  will enjoy the   cozy well apportioned buildings with modern facilities.

    Okowa  appealed for the support of all stakeholders for the security agencies so as to ensure peace and security in the society.

    According to Okowa, the task of ensuring peace and security of our society should not be left for government alone, stressing that “we cannot continue to leave the affairs of security just to the government alone; individuals who are blessed, corporate organisations ought to and should continue to support police in their work so that they can have the best in delivering their duties because when they have the best working environment they are likely to be more civil in your duties.

    “As a country and as a people we must realise that we require the partnership of the police and we ought to be their partners if we want things to work, the private sector should support the security agencies to ensure peace and security in the country.”

    He commended the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) and the Delta State Security Trust Fund for the building projects and operational vehicles stating: “I  must also thank the management of DESOPADEC and the management of the Delta state Security Trust Fund for their collaboration with the police, starting first with the Eagle Net Squad and the Transit camp for the women that was built, we need to partner with Police Force to provide conducive working environment for its officers and members, so  as to get the best out of them.”

    While congratulating Police Commissioner Muhammad Mustafa for his leadership qualities in bringing out the best in his subordinates, Okowa eulogised the initiator of the projects, DSP Usman Dimka, O/C Eagle-Net Special Squad, Asaba, for his initiative in building the office and transit camp and urged others to emulate him.

    Earlier, in his welcome address, the State Police Commissioner, CP Muhammad Mustafa appreciated Governor Okowa for his support to the state Police Command and DESOPADEC for the partnership and the projects.

    Mustafa said the building projects will boost the morale of his men who will undoubtedly redouble their efforts at crime fighting, adding that the Eagle Net Special Squad with its over 100 personnel will “complement the efforts of other existing operational outfits such as the Quick Response Squad (QRS), the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Squads (SAKCCS), the State Anti-Cult Unit (SACU), the Dragon and Safer Highways outfits”.

    He praised DSP Dimka for initiating and completing the projects for the benefit of the Police.

    He said:“ You have best exemplified the message which has been my watchword since my assumption of office as Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command which is: “leave the Command or any place you find yourself, better than you met it”. By building this ultra-modern office, along with its accompanying Women Police Transit Camp/Public Toilet and Bathroom, you have bequeathed a worthwhile legacy to generations of policemen and women and even those yet unborn who one day will serve in this Command.”

    DSP Dimka said the projects were in fulfillment of his vision of what the future police station should look like and providing conducive working environment for his colleagues.

     

  • Pandemonium as truck crushes two in Delta Community

    There was pandemonium in the university town of Abraka, Ethiope East council area of Delta state Friday when an angry mob took over the Abraka-Agbor Road in protest of the killing of two boys by a truck.

    A truck, which had lost control of its brakes, rammed into two teenagers from Orhia-Abraka, whose identities could not be ascertained, when the driver of the vehicle veered off the road.

    The sight of the mess made of the corpses by the truck triggered the angry reaction from members of the community, who went berserk, more especially as the driver of the truck had taken to his heels, abandoning the vehicle at the scene.

    A community source who relayed the development to the Nation in Warri on Friday said the angry mod went after every passing vehicle along the busy expressway, attacking drivers and leaving hundreds of travelers stranded while the melee lasted.

    “The sight was ugly; those boys were smashed beyond recognition and to make matters worse, the driver of the truck bolted before people could gather. The community boys were incensed by the sight of the corpses of the boys and they started attacking other vehicles traveling along the road around that time.

    “Policemen from the Abraka Division came, but they left the first time because they said they didn’t have a vehicle to evacuate the corpses with, but they later returned to park the body parts”, the source who did not want to be named explained.

    When reached for confirmation and details, the spokesman of the Delta state police command, Andrew Aniamaka (DSP), said the Abraka Police Division had brought the situation under control, adding that investigation was on.

    “The DPO has calmed the area because he was personally on ground. Normalcy has returned to the area. As for the lorry and whoever did whatever, the Police will ensure justice is done on the matter,” he said.

    Police uncover arms factory in Delta

    Delta State Police Command has arrested three suspects for allegedly manufacturing arms at a factory at Enwhe community in Isoko South Local Government of Delta State.

    AK 47, automatic revolver, single barreled rifles and pistols are manufactured at the factory, which has been in existence for years, the police said.

    The Nation learnt that the suspects allegedly supply arms and ammunition to criminals.

    The suspects, it was gathered, owned the building where the arms are manufactured.

    Police Commissioner Mr. Zanna Ibrahim, who confirmed the arrest, said his men, acting on a tip-off, arrested Afferay Editor, adding that the arrest of the leader led to further arrests at Uzere/Aviara and Enwhe communities.

    He identified others as Solomon Ureye and Edejero Ureye.

    Ibrahim said: “Two fabricated AK 47, automated revolver, two single barreled rifles, two locally-made pistols, 82 rounds of live ammunition, drilling machine/equipment used for the manufacture of locally-made guns, four phones and a parcel of substance suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from the suspects.”

    Police arrest two over killings in Asaba

    The Delta State Police Command said it has arrested two suspected IPOB members for complicity in the murder of four persons.

    It identified the two suspects as Abraham Ndudi 24 years from Kwale in Delta and Okereke Ifeanyi 21 years old from Ogbaru, Anambra State.

    It will be recalled that Friday 15th three armed men in black outfits, suspected to be members of  the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) fired indiscriminately into Abraka market, Asaba, predominantly inhabited by non-indigenes of the state and in the process killed four persons, while injuring many.

    In a signed press statement by Police image maker, DSP Andrew Aniamaka made available to The Nation Saturday, it said the police were on the trail of a third suspect simply known as “Last Burial”.

    Aniamaka said the suspects were arrested from their hiding place in the rafters of a major hotel in Abraka area in Asaba-the Delta State Capital.

    Excerpts of the statement reads, “The Delta Police Command has in the early hours of Saturday, 16th September, 2017 arrested two suspects namely: Abraham Ndudi ‘m’, 24 years old from Kwale, Delta State and Okereke Ifeanyi ‘m’, 21 yrs from Ogbaru in Anambra State for their involvement in the dastardly shooting and killing of four persons at Abraka market, Asaba yesterday, Friday, September 15th, 2017 at about 10.45pm. The suspects, who were arrested from their hiding place on the ceiling of a major hotel in Abraka, Asaba, where they had fled into in their dire bid to escape arrest, are already helping the police in their investigation. Meanwhile, efforts are on top gear to arrest the third suspect, whose real name is yet unknown but simply identified as Last Burial”.

    The statement named those killed as Usman Abdullahi ‘m’, aged 45yrs, Ali Sidi ‘m’, aged 70yrs, Ibrahim Zubairu’m’ aged 30yrs and Hauwa (surname unknown), aged 22yrs.

    It said five injured victims are currently recuperating at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba

    The statement urged the public not “to panic or even contemplate any reprisal action as the law will surely take its course’.
