The House of Representatives Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration has pledged to fast track the passage of the bill establishing the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, Gbaramatu kingdom of Delta state.

Hon. Uduak Odudoh, Deputy Chairman of the committee, who led a delegation on oversight function to the university Thursday, posited that signing the bill into law would enable the institution compete favourably with its counterparts across the world.

Speaking to reporters shortly after an assessment of the varsity’s facilities located in the twin communities of Okerenkoko and Kurutie, Odudoh admitted that adequate funding would address the needs of the school.

“We will also do everything as a parliament and include in our budget the building of a standard clinic in the university because of its distance from the upland,” Odudoh stated.

He applauded the Tompolo Foundation for contributing to the development of the learning citadel.

The lawmaker also expressed gratitude to the host communities for the landmass and enabling environment needed for the school to thrive.

The group particularly thanked the elder statesman and political icon, chief Senator Dr. E k Clark for finding time out of his very busy schedule to host his political son and give him his blessings over his Chairmanship aspiration, firm in the conviction that this thoughtful gesture would go a long way to ensure success in the endeavour.

Delta-owned broadcast station suffers fire outbreak again

Barely one month after suffering a fire outbreak, a section of the Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Asaba, Delta Capital on Wednesday night, has been gutted by fire, The Nation has learnt.

The units ravaged by the inferno include a section of the Accounts Department, the old FM radio studio converted to offices and other critical operational areas of the broadcast outfit.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the fire began at about midnight, from one of the offices at the rear, quickly spreading to other offices and burning down three offices in the process.

The Nation gathered that the prompt arrival of the Delta Fire Service prevented the inferno from razing the entire station.

The incident reportedly drew the attention of top government officials, even as the fire was attributed to an electrical fault.
