  • Ex-convict arrested for armed robbery

A 37-year-old member of a notorious robbery gang, Philip Rome, said to have been terrorizing residents of Ugheli, Patani and Warri areas of Delta State, has been arrested.

He was arrested recently by the operatives of Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), in Ugor Community in Ugheli South Local Government Area of Delta State alongside two other members of his gang identified as Saturday Isegini and Oke David.

The suspects, according to sources had carried out several armed robbery and kidnapping operations across Delta State.

It was said that two locally made short guns, seven live cartridges and a stolen Volkswagen Golf 3 car were recovered from Rome and members of his gang at the time of their arrest.

Rome, who was released few months ago from the Warri Prisons, allegedly confessed during interrogations that the robbery operation that led to his arrest was the first and only robbery operation.

He said:  “One of my friends by name,  Eseletu, who  I  met at the Warri Prison, lured me into joining the gang and  I  was arrested after my first operation where the Volkswagen Golf 3 car, N500,000 and mobile phones were robbed by my gang that fateful day”.

A source however dismissed the suspects’ statement as untrue, adding that they had been on the wanted list of the Delta State Police Command and the Department of State Security (DSS).

”The three suspects and some others at large are notorious armed robbers and kidnappers and they have been terrorizing Ugheli, Patani, Warri and Sapele areas of Delta  State.

‘’They have been involved series of armed robberies and kidnappings. They are not first offenders and some of their syndicate are still in prison.’’

‘’They are among criminals on the wanted list for kidnapping and armed robbery in Delta State and we were deployed to this state to arrest them and we caught them while they were planning another robbery operation.

‘’We tracked and arrested them after they have successfully robbed a man of his Golf 3 wagon car and a lady passenger who they took her  cash and other valuables .

‘’They took the vehicle to Kokori where it was hidden with the intention of using it for kidnapping and armed robbery the next day and they were intercepted and arrested”,  the source added.

  • Group condemns assault on woman in Delta

A think tank group, The Nigeria 2015 Group has condemned the brutal assault on a woman Friday Eluro, by an aide to Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.

A group, the United Patriots of Nigeria, had published a video on Twitter on Saturday, where a naked woman was being assaulted by some men, while tied up.

One of the tweets reads: “The attention of United Patriots of Nigeria has been drawn to a video footage that showed a group of thugs, acting on orders of one dishonourable Friday Eluro, an Aide of Gov @IfeanyiOkowa of Delta State, publicly assaulting and dehumanising one Miss Dada of Delta State.”

“The information reaching us is that the Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa had already sacked the man and, he is currently detained in the State CID, Asaba Police Command, Delta State”.
“As we commend the immediate action of the governor and the timely response of the police, we call on Nigeria Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammad Adamu and, humanitarian NGOs in Nigeria to get involved in this matter to see that the man and those that were involved in the inhuman abuse are brought to book”.
“As we will be following up the case, we will also forward the video footage of this case to all foreign missions/embassies with a request that the former SA be denied visiting rights to those countries until he is cleared of this or serve his sentence as we do not want any Nigerian in position of a privilege to be bringing disrepute or further inflicting dark blotch on Nigeria and Nigerians”.

  • Obaseki extols virtues of late Maj. Gen. David Ejoor

    …mourns passing of Taiwo Ogunjobi

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has extolled the virtues of Late retired Major General David Ejoor, who served as administrator of old Mid-Western Region and later as Governor, Mid-Western State, praising his contribution to what later became Delta and Edo states.

The death of late Maj. Gen. Ejoor at the age of 87 was announced on February 10, 2019.

  • Why Delta is economically backward – Guber aspirant

The Governorship Candidate of the Democratic People’s Party (DPP), Delta State, Mr Richard Kimeku, has said that Delta State is economically backward because it lacks good leaders.

He said it was high time Deltans tried new hands that may have better ideas to transform the state.

Mr Kimeku, who made the observations at a press conference to unveil his policies and programmes at Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, said the state had not made the desired breakthrough in the present competitive global village because it has no worthy commodities to market to the world.

He said his administration will be centered on capacity building of the people across board to make their output competitively relevant at both local and international market.

While calling on Deltans not to rely on lies and continued underdevelopment occasioned by the ruling parties at both national and state levels, Kimeku said he plans to enthrone zero tolerance for corruption.

He said if elected governor of Delta State come March 2nd, 2019, he would deploy the state resources to training and retraining of the people of the state to empower them with information, knowledge and modern technics in line with their areas of specialization.

He added that farmers, who constitute major population of the state, would be exposed to mechanized farming, improved seedlings and other aspect of farming in line with global best practices.

He said his decision to run for the office of governor was born out of a divine project that will recover the state and place it on the pedestal it ought to be in terms of infrastructural and economic development.

He noted that his leadership will develop the people to acquire requisite skills that will enable them harness available resources in local and international environment.

The DPP governorship candidate and former Director with Federal Inland Revenue Service, said it does not take rocket science to engender development, stressing that the only thing needed was the will power to enforce rules and make sure that competent and qualified man power and contractors were engaged to deliver on assignments given to them.

He said if elected as the governor of the state there will be no room for kickbacks in his administration.

He further disclosed that training of teachers and artisans will also be a priority while online teaching and learning will be introduced in schools to make student survive in the global competitive markets as the world was presently driven by knowledge based economy.

Mr Kimeku added that he will establish a training institute to nurture and promote talents and skills while graduates will also be trained to make them employable.

The DPP governorship candidate who described corruption as a crime of opportunity carried out by those who are not too certain of tomorrow, frowned at the high level of corruption in the country, adding that if elected he will run a corrupt free administration where merit will reign over mediocrity.

He said fighting corruption will be by all as the era of kickbacks and using cronies will be over, adding that there will be a market intelligence data base where all contracts awarded and the amount will be published for all to see.

He said the private sector will be brought to build fishing companies along the coastal communities in Delta State to help tap into the abundant but yet to be tapped potentials that comes with being blessed with water.

  • Guber polls: South South hails military over deployment of troops to protect voters

The South-South Coalition for Credible Leadership has described as a welcome the deployment of military troops to the region ahead of the Saturday’s governorship and house of assembly elections.
The coalition said the action would further boost the confidence of electorate during the polls.
Briefing newsmen on Thursday, Success Timothy, the Coordinator General of the group, said the deployment is necessary following the success of the troops in some south-southern states during the national assembly and presidential election on February 23.
According to him, the presence of troops during the elections proved to be the right decision in view of the fact that acts of politically motivated violence were limited to a few instances.
Success said the he pockets of violence witnessed in some parts of Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross Rivers state would have been more widespread but for the presence of troops.
According to him, “Interestingly, the Niger-Delta, where political leaders clamored most against military presence for the election, recorded more of the instances of violence and ballot snatching during the exercise. It is logical that soldiers should be withdrawn from areas that were largely peaceful during the polls of two weeks ago to allow for the deployment of higher number of troops to the places that recorded violence.
“Meanwhile, we observed that the personnel of the Nigerian Army were able to maintain peace and prevent political brigandage while adhering to acceptable rules of engagement. They fear of abuse and intimidation of the civilian population, which opponents of military deployment had used to back up their argument, turned out to unjustified as law abiding citizens had nothing to be apprehensive about. Only attackers that had intended to deprive other people of their right to life were gunned down in exchange of gunfire with troops in Rivers state.

The South- South Coalition for Credible Leadership therefore passes a vote of confidence on the Nigerian Army and its personnel. They have the capacity to support security operations in the regions towards ensuring that elections hold without citizens being afraid for their lives or worrying that their votes will not count because ballot box snatchers. Their presence in the entire Niger-Delta region will ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order by any group of persons.
“We passed this vote of confidence cognizant of the campaign of calumny being waged against the deployment of the military for the elections. It does not take long to decipher the intent of those opposed to troops being in the Niger-Delta during this period. These people comprise of opposition political parties that lost in the presidential and National Assembly elections because they were unable to use thugs to snatch and stuff ballot boxes just as they were unable to intimidate voters.
“The other sets of people opposed to seeing troops in the Niger-Delta are the militants and sabotage economic infrastructure in the region as well as those that have their sight set on kidnap for ransom. These are backed up by separatist elements, including those that belong to groups that the courts have outlawed. They are apparently scared that the presence of the military in the area will yield credible intelligence that can be used to dismantle their non-election related criminality.
“It is most unfortunate that the criminal intentions of the aforementioned groups are being hidden behind the façade of ‘the opposition’ and for marshalling weak arguments against the deployment of troops to secure the country during the elections. The fake news they are peddling is that the Army is the region to favour particular candidates. This must rank among the greatest lies told so far in 2019.
“We note the charge by the Chief if Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Tukur Buratai, to troops and commanders to do better during their deployment for Saturday’s election. Such decisive and responsive leadership has contributed to the sterling performance that the Nigerian Army displayed during the previous elections. His acknowledgement of the few instances of violence and a commitment to correct these errors is laudable for this gives the assurance that there will be improved voters’ turn out once the electorate are reassured that they are safe.”

  • Over 3,500 PDP members defect to APC in Delta

    …as Ogboru storms Udu/Ughelli South

No fewer than 3,500 members of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Thursday, defected to the All Progressive Congress, APC, during Chief Great Ogboru campaign train to Udu and Ughelli South local government areas.

Ogboru and the senator representing Delta Central senatorial District at the National Assembly, Ovie Omo-Agege also said that the party will not be intimidated in the forthcoming elections by the PDP rigging tactics.

Speaking at Ughelli south stadium in Otu-Jeremi and Otor-Udu while on governorship campaigns they said, “Members of the APC and Deltans will resist any intimidation from the PDP because APC is poise to liberate Delta State from the hand of PDP monopolistic rule.

According to Ogboru, “The PDP is a party of darkness and it is only in APC Deltans can see light and development and he appealed to those who have sold the Permanent Voters Card to go and retrieve them back because votes will count in the coming elections.

“Deltans should give the same support to President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC administration as they are supporting us because if he fails we fail.

“Do not worry about Delta liberation because if you vote me and APC, Delta state will move forward”.

Also, Senator Agege said, “Buhari sent us message and we are speaking under his authority because we have his mandate.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has done well for the Urhobos and Deltans in general and the only way to pay him back is to vote for him for the second tenure.

“Almost every road in Delta State are been constructed by the NDDC under Buhari administration and the APC”.

At Otu-Jerem and Udu, over 3,500 former PDP faithful and leaders led by Chief Freeborn Ayoma and Hon Alfred Urhukpe defected to the APC.

  • Gunmen abduct 70-year-old retiree in Delta

Unidentified gunmen on Monday evening have abducted a 70-year old retiree, Chief Johnson Odio, from his farm in Ushie community, Ndokwa East council area of Delta state.

The Nation gathered that the Isoko chief, from Ozoro town, was abducted at about 6:00 pm on Monday, by a gang of four armed hoodlums while returning home from his farm with two of his female workers.

Family sources, who spoke under conditions of anonymity, told The Nation that the abductors released the two female farm employees of their victim when they told them that they knew nowhere in the area and were mere labourers.

However, there was panic in Chief Odio’s home Tuesday evening as there had been no contact from the abductors of their patriarch more than 24 hours after he was taken, considering his state of health and the fact that he had none of his regular medications with him at the time he was taken at gunpoint.

“He was kidnapped about 6pm on Monday when coming out of his farm with two of his labour helps. His farm is in Ushie in Ndokwa East. They later released the two labourers once they pleaded and told them that they don’t know anywhere.

“They said the kidnappers were four in number and they were carrying guns.
We are scared because he is not strong healthwise and he has not taken any of his medications since he was kidnapped yesterday. So we don’t know his current state now. They are yet to contact us or demand anything.

“According to the women, three of the kidnappers covered their faces and one did not, we don’t know if they did that to conceal their identities, we don’t know if they are youths from our community or not”, one of his daughters told The Nation late Tuesday evening.

However, confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Delta state police command, Mr Andrew Aniamaka (DSP), told The Nation on Wednesday that the police was already taking all the right steps to get Chief Odio safely released.

He suggested that the abduction was suspected to have been carried out by community youths, whom he said would be apprehended soon and made to face the law.

“The DPO Ashaka has confirmed it: he’s a 70-year-old man and since the abductors have not called to ask for ransom, there are indications that the abduction is an inside job and the youths might be at the heart of it.

“From what has been gathered, he was abducted alongside two of his female workers, who were later released. The police have commenced works on the matter, to ensure he is released as soon as possible”, Aniamaka said.

  • 2019: PDP, APC in battle of supremacy in Delta

Preparations for the 2019 general elections have begun in earnest in Delta State. OKUNGBOWA AIWERIE reports that the campaigns, which are far from being issue-based, have degenerated into one of mudslinging between the main parties, thereby raising the spectacle of violence.

THE 2019 general elections in Delta State promises to be a keenly fought battle between the two dominant political parties — the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC), with the fringe parties serving only as adjuncts.

The campaigns for the 2019 general elections are assuming a frenetic pace. While the PDP has embarked on a state wide campaign, same cannot be said of the APC, which appears to be bogged down by internal wrangling.

With presidential elections now weeks away, there is the perception that the ruling party at the centre may have started out late, as it has not launched any meaningful attempt at soliciting votes from Deltans.

But, the APC factional chairman, Jones Erue, debunked this insinuation. He said: “We are campaigning door-to-door contrary to insinuations by the PDP that we are not campaigning. I urge all members to win the units and wards.”

Campaign efforts by both parties appear geared towards plundering votes at the unit levels across the state.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege stressed this new strategy recently at different fora. The governor spoke at the inauguration of the PDP campaign council in the state, when he admonished party men of the dangers of underrating the chances of the APC. He urged members to conduct a unit driven campaign.

He said: “I appeal to leaders of our party to ensure that they all relocate to their wards and mount an effective campaign, as there is no gain residing in Asaba when the battle will hold at the various units. So, I charge all to go to their various wards where the contest will hold.”

Omo-Agege expressed a similar view during the inauguration of the APC campaign council in Asaba. His words: “Our job has been cut out for us. Our election campaign is going to be unit driven. This is to ensure that the party wins with a huge margin; unlike in 2015 when the APC scored a paltry 48,000 votes.”

The PDP, without the distractions of debilitating legal battles, appears to have a head start. But, this notwithstanding, the APC inaugurated its campaign team last week amidst pomp and pageantry.

Furthermore, both parties have also sought endorsements from spiritual leaders. The race for such endorsements started late in December, when the APC governorship candidate, Chief Great Ogboru, led high-profile party men, including, former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and factional chair Jones Erue, to the Rainbow Christian Assembly, Effurun to dedicate his campaign and the entire electoral process to God.

Ogboru said the 2019 elections is for the APC to take over governance of Delta State and usher in a “new dawn of light and development” to what he described as “years of slavery and underdevelopment of the state by the PDP”.

The APC candidate said the party’s decision to dedicate the campaign committee and the entire process to God was because victory was assured. Uduaghan, at the church service, boasted that with his defection to the APC, the issue of who wins the 2019 elections in the state is already a settled affair.

He said: “I know how we have been doing it before and with both of us (Uduaghan and Ogboru) now in one camp victory is already sure come 2019.”

The PDP, not wishing to be outdone in the quest for spiritual intervention, dedicated its own 2019 election campaign to God at a vigil in Asaba, the state capital. Okowa, on that occasion, expressed confidence that God would grant the candidates of the party victory in the forthcoming general elections.

His words: “Because we have put our God first, we have no need to be scared going into the campaign or scared of the elections. God is leading us into the battle and we will have victory. As a people and as a party, there is no doubt that we have worked hard these three and half years to deliver democratic dividends to our people. It is significant that we come to the presence of God today to seek Him. It is going to be the battle of the spirits and our God will prevail; our opponents that are relying on small gods will fall.”

Also, as part of preparations, new campaign offices have been commissioned by both parties.

The PDP recently secured the endorsement of some traditional rulers in different parts of the state. For instance, all the traditional rulers of Isoko ethnic nationality and their President-Generals endorsed Governor Okowa as their candidate for the 2019 governorship elections.

At an emergency national conference of Isoko nation convened by the Isoko Development Union (IDU) held at Oleh, Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State, the traditional rulers observed that the only way they could reciprocate the governor’s good governance in Isoko land is to re-elect him to continue with his good works.

The Ovie of Oleh Kingdom, Omagha I, Anthony Ovrawah, who is the Chairman of Isoko Traditional Council of Traditional Rulers, led more than 19 traditional rulers to pray for the governor, assuring that all Isoko sons and daughters would cast their votes for him.

Also, Anioma traditional rulers unanimously backed the re-election of Governor Okowa with a vote of confidence, stating that he has delivered the dividends of democracy across the state.

The royal fathers, under the aegis of Delta North Traditional Rulers Forum (DNTF), gave the confidence vote at a meeting held at the Palace of the Obi of Owa, Obi Emmanuel Efeizomor II, where they observed that Governor Okowa has delivered the dividends of democracy across the state and as such deserves a second term to complete the good work he has started.

But, it remains to be seen if these endorsements secured by the PDP will translate to electoral votes. Okowa had, while admonishing party faithful during the inauguration of its campaign council harped on the need for an issue-based campaign.

His words: “First, I want to thank the party for putting up this campaign council and other bodies that had been set up for the purpose of the campaign for the PDP in Delta State. As we go into the campaign, it should be issue-based. We are confident that there is a lot of achievements for us to campaign with which will earn us victory. Other persons may go out there to insult people and say what they do not know. Please don’t respond to such persons; tell the story of where we have been, where we are today and what we will do because, we have a lot of projects; we have commissioned several projects and there is a lot more to be commissioned.”

The campaigns have been anything but issue based, despite what the leadership of the leading parties would have the electorates believe. Okowa, during a ceremony to receive decampees in Ughelli North, alleged that the APC was planning to disrupt elections using federal might.

His words: “They want to disrupt elections in Delta North; they boast of bringing the police and army, but we cannot be intimidated by these things.

“During the elections, don’t leave your units after voting; remain, send delegations to accompany the electoral officers to the ward, the local government headquarters and to the state headquarters. Don’t give them room to rig, because, you can see that the opposition is not engaging in campaign, because they are aware that they cannot win in a free and fair contest; they don’t have campaign programmes and they have nothing to campaign with. But, we must watch them closely.”

The APC has not been entirely blameless in this regard, as they have also been engaged in mudslinging. At an APC reconciliation meeting in Uwvie LGA, the APC governorship candidate accused the PDP of electoral malpractice.

He said: “This time around, the PDP can no longer do what they used to do with high impunity. They are going to bribe people, but when there is contention between authority and money, money will fail. We want change in Delta State. What the PDP had always relied on, rigging elections, no longer exists; this has been dislodged by one man, Sai Baba. The PDP has money to bribe, but when there is contention between authority and money, authority carries the day. So, the PDP will lose in a free and fair election. Uvwie opposition has always given the PDP a good fight for their money since 2003. They will carry electoral materials to Government House, but we will still defeat them. They defeated Barr. Agbamu then by changing the result. But, that will never happen again. They no longer have the capability and capacity to carry electoral materials anymore. They don’t have that cover anymore in Abuja; it has been dislodged by the man, Sai Baba. God is with us.”

The Labour Party may bear the unenviable toga of a fringe party, but its Delta State Chairman, Chief Tony Ezeagwu, believes the two dominant parties are in for a rude shock. He said the LP will exploit the disunity in the major political parties.

Responding to a question, Ezeagwu said: “We have candidates vying for all 29 constituency seats in the state legislature, including all National Assembly seats. As a political party, we are ready for elections. Elections is not about inaugurating big campaign councils, the LP will win big in the forthcoming elections in Delta.”
