  • Firm dissociates self from threat to demolish GSM facilities

A major contractor to MTN Nigeria, Procomtel Limited, has dissociated itself from a sub-contractor company, Gbaruka Resources, threatening to demolish MTN facilities in the Niger Delta over non-payment for services rendered to MTN.

Gbaruka Resources, a service provider company based in Bayelsa State which is a sub-contractor to Prcomtel had threatened to demolish MTN facilities in the Niger Delta over failure to honour the contractual agreement it reached with Procomtel Limited.

In a statement in Lagos, Procomtel Limited dismissed the threat by Gbaruka Resources as not been in tandem with the rule of law, equity and good corporate governance which has been and remains its tenet as a law-abiding corporate organisation.

In the statement by its General Manager, Legal service, Ms. Bolanle Opadokun, Procomtel affirmed that it was not in dispute as they were contracted by MTN Plc to build various cell sites all over the country and as such engaged the services of sub contractors like Gbaruka Resources, and a host of others to execute the contracts, for which loans were obtained from commercial banks at high interest rates to execute the jobs in line with the Turnkey agreement with MTN.

The company said while it was not in support of threat by Gbaruka Resources to go unlawful, it was greatly perplexed with the reaction of MTN in a statement credited to Ms Funmi Omogbemigun, General Manager Corporate Affairs MTN, published in the media, where she claimed that Procomtel was engaged as a site build contractor with terms of reference to carry out specific work as may be required by MTN, and upon completion shall advice MTN representative who shall verify status and issue certificate of completion.

While stating that the matter was subjudice, the company recalled that contrary to clause 15 of the Turnkey Agreement it signed with MTN, which provides for Arbitration and mediation for settlement of disputes, MTN went to the court to file action against Procomtel, on which the court gave a judgement on admission against MTN in the sum of N45,000,000 which was eventually gotten vide Garnishee order that was made absolute by the Lagos High Court, adding that they also have a counter claim of over N1.5 billion in the matter which has since been referred to the Lagos multi door court house for Arbitration.

Procomtel Limited said it has been seriously bruised by the attitude of MTN, which they claimed had crippled their business, despite the fact that they were part of the very few companies willing to do a business with MTN during the turbulent and precarious period in the Niger Delta region adding that they have been left in the lurch as to the fulfillment of MTN’s payment obligation to enable them liquidate their indebtedness to commercial banks and sub contractors, claiming to have gone all out to assist MTN in building sites and training youths through creation of jobs to stop the unrest in the region.

The company further claimed that MTN had resorted to all forms of mechanisms to cripple its business by its persistent refusal to honour its obligations to them, throwing a challenge to MTN to show them a site that is not working and generating revenue for them among their completed sites.

It called on the Federal Government, Regulatory bodies in the telecommunication industry and other stakeholders to call MTN to order and look into the matter to further demonstrate government commitment to the development of local content and boost job creations for thousands of Nigerians by salvaging the damage and harsh treatment it claimed to have suffered from MTN, to enable the company settle its outstandings to all the parties they are indebted to due to the truncated contract.

  • Obi to demolish illegal structures to save roads

THERE was tension yesterday in Onitsha when Anambra State Governor Peter Obi ordered the recovery of roads and streets encroached upon by land speculators in Nkpor, Onitsha and other cities in the state.

The governor said areas originally designed as roads and streets would be recovered and reopened to the public.

Obi spoke after inspecting Dimude Street, which linked Ukpo Street, Nkpor, but was blocked and closed by land speculators, following the building of structures on the road.

The governor said such structures would be demolished.

He wondered why some people were building on existing public roads and causing traffic congestion and other difficulties to fellow residents.

Obi regretted that such illegalities were perpetrated in collusion with some government officials, adding that the administration would reclaim all such roads.

The government has started removing illegal structures and obstructions on Agulu Avenue, Nkpor, and its environs.

Obi said yesterday the exercise would be extended to all parts of Idemili North, Onitsha North and South, Awka and Nnewi South Local Governments.

The governor gave the occupants hours to remove the structures from New Tarzan Junction through Agulu Avenue, old Motor Tyres Amagu and Mercedes Avenue, all in Nkpor.

  • Edo to demolish hospital wing

The Edo State Government may demolish the multi-billion naira accident and emergency complex of the Central Hospital, Benin, due to structural deficiencies.

The two top floors of the West Wing of the four-storey complex in which the government has invested over N3.2billion collapsed last June, killing the Italian project manager.

The government ordered the indefinite suspension of construction and ordered an investigation into the incident.

The investigation showed that the collapse was caused by a malfunctioning crane. The crane was said to be carrying a bucket of concrete before falling on the decking , which led to the collapse of a section under construction.

A source said: “The action of the government is in relation to the preliminary report of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), which recommended demolition and a fresh soil analysis at the site.”

  • Oyo CP threatens to demolish Auxiliary’s house

    •11 suspected robbers held

Oyo State Commissioner of Police Joseph Mbu has threatened to demolish the house of a factional leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mr. Lamidi Mukaila, a.k.a. Auxiliary, if he fails to report at the Police Headquarters to explain his role in the clash at Iwo road a year ago, in which many people, including students, were killed.

Speaking with reporters yesterday at the Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, Mbu said if Mukaila does not surrender himself before the week runs out, his house would be demolished and he would be forcibly arrested.

The police chief said: “His rival, Alhaji AbdulLateef Akinsola, also known as Tokyo, has appeared at the police headquarters to explain his role and has been granted bail with reliable sureties while investigation is ongoing.

“Auxiliary is still wanted by the police. Until he shows up and explains his roles in the crisis, we would continue to declare him wanted. Tokyo has many cases to answer but we treat him with honour because of his age. He is 63.

“He was released on bail after interrogation, having surrendered himself freely for investigation. Whenever we need him he shows up. If he refuses, his guarantors would be called to question. If Auxiliary does not surrender himself, I will look for him and, if I am pushed further, I will demolish his house.”

    Eleven suspected robbers were paraded.

Mbu said five locally made pistols, 1,501 rounds of AK 47 live ammunition, pump action guns, five cars, N91,000, seven mobile phones and clothes were recovered from the suspects.

He said a “soldier”, Bada Yusuf, attached to 2 division in Auchi, Edo State, with No. 11NA/66/10245, who was part of a kidnap syndicate, was arrested last Wednesday.

Mbu said Bada, dressed in army camouflage, was arrested on the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway while trying to collect ransom from the family of an Indian victim, Mr. Manoj Singh.

He said commercial motorcyclists, who carry more than one passenger, would, henceforth, be arrested.
