  • Philip Billing set to debut for Denmark against Swiss

Nigeria born Philip Anyanwu Billing is set to make a debut for Denmark Saturday’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Switzerland.

The 23 year old midfielder who has hitherto played for Danes Under 19 and 21 sides is currently a key player with Premier league side AFC Bournemouth. He has been named in the 23-man Denmark side to face Switzerland at the Telia Parken on Saturday.

Should the former Huddersfield Town ace play against the Swiss on Saturday he would have earned a senior cap putting paid to talks about his switching allegiance to Nigeria.

Billing only recently confirmed that he had a chart with Super Eagles ace and Everton forward Alex Iwobi during which the former Arsenal man reportedly told him to consider playing for the Eagles.

Billing who has become a key player in the Bournemouth line up after agreeing a £15million summer move from Huddersfield was in action for 90 minutes against Everton last month with Bournemouth emerging victorious.

Billing confirmed in a chat with Danish publication BT that Iwobi did suggest that adding that mere suggesting it is an indication that he is doing well.

“It wasn’t until when we (Cherries) were going to play against Everton a couple of weeks ago when Alex Iwobi asked if I might be interested in coming and playing for Nigeria.

Alex Iwobi (l) and Phillip Billing (r), will he play for Denmark on Saturday

“He said the coach had asked me. It was the first time I heard anything concrete myself. He added: “It’s a pat on the back that another country would like you to play for them. I just take that as a shrug and proof that you are doing well, “he enthused

Billing’s father is from Nigeria while the mother is from Denmark where he has been brought up.

This is however not the first time the issue of Billing playing for Nigeria would crop up. In November 2018, Billing turned down an approach to switch his international allegiance to the Nigeria national team. It would not also be the first time he will be called up by Denmark. He did receive first call up in March 2019 but did not make a debut.

The story will however change if he plays Saturday against Switzerland.

Two Nigerian born players Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori who has since joined England will be hoping to play against Czech Republic tonight in the Euro qualifiers.

  • Denmark to ban petrol, diesel cars by 2030

Denmark has proposed a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 and hybrid from 2035, joining international efforts to promote electric-only vehicles to reduce air pollution and combat climate change.

The government has previously come under fire for increasing tax on electric cars in 2016, sending sales down from more than three per cent of all new cars to almost zero.
This was now aimed at following the example being set in an increasing number of countries.

“It is a big ambition that will be hard to achieve. But that’s exactly why we need to try,” Danish Prime Minister, Lars Rasmussen, told parliament on Tuesday.

The plan requires parliamentary approval to become law and will be presented to parliament next week.

Britain and France have both pledged to ban new petrol and diesel cars from 2040 in move that could hit the wealth of oil producers and transform a car industry in which global car makers are scrambling to adapt to the brave new world of electric vehicles.

In Sweden, sales of electric cars make up more than seven per cent of all new car sales while more than half of all new cars in Norway are electric or hybrid vehicles.

The mayors of Paris, Madrid, Mexico City and Athens have all said they plan to ban diesel vehicles from city centres by 2025, while the French government also aims to end the sale of new gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040.
Denmark, the cradle of wind power, aims to become fossil fuel-free by 2050.

In 2017, Volvo became the first major traditional automaker to phase out vehicles powered solely by the internal combustion engine, announcing that all Volvo car models launched after 2019 would be electric or hybrids.

  • Corruption: Hold your politicians, companies accountable- Envoy urges Nigerians

The outgoing Ambassador of Denmark to Nigeria, Mr Torben Gettermann, has stressed the need for Nigerians to hold politicians, companies and individuals accountable to win anti-corruption crusade in the country.

Gettermann, who said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, said such was what helped his country to become one of the least corrupt countries in the world.

“Denmark is one of the least corrupt countries in the world because we hold our politicians and our companies to account.

“We need to do that for our politicians, individuals, companies to not only subscribe to the ideal of being transparent and non-corrupt but also to actually live it out.

“We have a code of conduct for Danish companies. As public servants, we have to sign a declaration and we have to go through courses so that we know what corruption means,“ he said.

He, however, said that Denmark could assist Nigeria in addressing the challenge in some ways.

“What we can do is to highlight the situations and make sure that people talk about it, that action is taken to an extent possible.

“Also go into cooperation with Nigeria on education in terms of understanding how much money corruption actually takes out of the system, money that the people in general could benefit from.

“We have had Danish companies active in some of the task forces that have been set up here in Nigeria,” he said

While noting that corruption in Nigerian ports was tremendous, he commended the efforts of the Federal Government to reduce it, stressing however that there was still much more to be done in the sector.

He commended the present administration in the country for laying a good foundation in fighting corruption.

“The current government in Nigeria has made a mark with the President Muhammadu Buhari being the anti-corruption champion in the AU. (NAN)

  • France, Denmark confirm second round places

The goals finally dried up at this thrilling World Cup on Tuesday when a flat France and dull Denmark played a mutually-beneficial 0-0 draw at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

But however dull and flat the draw was, it allowed the French to finish top of Group C and the Danes to qualify in second spot.

Thirty-six games in Russia had failed to result in a goalless stalemate, but neither France nor Denmark ever looked like scoring in a tedious affair.

France were already assured qualification but wanted to go through in top spot to avoid a likely last-16 clash with in-form Croatia.

Denmark could have only been denied qualification had they lost to France and had Australia beaten Peru in the match being simultaneously played in Sochi.

But with the Peruvians leading 2-0 before the hour in that game, the Moscow clash settled down to little more than a canter.

It was however not in the same category as the infamous 1982 “Nichtangriffspakt von Gijon” — the non-aggression pact of Gijon.

The then West Germany and Austria had both settled for a 1-0 German win which put them both through.

This time around, neither side at the Luzhniki looked to be going all out for victory.

“It was our objective to ensure we were first out of the group… The objective was achieved,” French coach Didier Deschamps said.

“It was very difficult. Teams are very well prepared, and it’s not easy against such a packed defence.”

The writing had been was on the wall early in the capital, with the play dominated by industry rather than any kind of inspiration.

The Danes built a pattern of firing balls deep before quickly tracking back, while the French kept possession well but struggled throughout with the final ball.

Antoine Griezmann, surprisingly not among the six players rested by Didier Deschamps for this match, looked listless as he sought to probe the Danish defence for a way through.

At times it seemed as though he was on a different wavelength to his teammates, who failed to spot his runs or find the spaces Griezmann played into.

It took more than half an hour before there was any real chance.

Even then, Ousmane Dembele pushed his right foot shot wide of the goal — and of Kasper Schmeichel’s overly elaborate dive.

Deschamps brought Benjamin Mendy on for Lucas Hernandez just after half time, but he might have made a raft of changes as the French continually misfired.

Jeers and whistles swirled around the frustrated crowd as both sides failed time after time to create any real opportunities.

The Danes were continuing to defend deep and the French rarely breaking out of a trot.

Deschamps substituted Griezmann in the 68th minute for Nabil Fekir, but it was a case of “plus ca change’’.

“I made a lot of changes. That hurts the cohesion a bit but it’s good that the whole squad feels involved,” Deschamps said.

Few teams will fear either side on the back of this performance but surely there will be better days ahead for both nations when the reality of sudden-death forces their hands.

France will in the next round face the Group D runners-up, while Denmark have the Group D winners to contend with.

  • Russia 2018: France, Denmark advance to Round of Sixteen

Denmark joined France on the round of sixteen of the 2018 FIFA World Cup after playing out the first goalless draw of the tournament, at the Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow.

The result leaves the Les Blues finish on top of Group C,  with Denmark finished second of the group.

The fans in Moscow, disappointed the result, booed the players after the game. They were initially enthusiastic for a goal, especially the red-shirted Danes who packed one end.

But they saw little in the way of goal-mouth excitement, with the first shot on target arriving in the 39th minute, when France’s Antoine Griezmann turned to fire a tame effort at Kasper Schmeichel from the edge of the area.

Denmark did fashion the best chance of the first half, when France keeper Steve Mandanda just beat Christian Eriksen to Andreas Cornelius’s excellent low cross.

Peru on the other hand, left the Mundial with their heads held high after goals from Andre Carrillo and Paolo Guerrero earned them a 2-0 win over Australia, in Sochi.

Paolo Guerrero teed up Peru’s first World Cup goal in 36 years and then scored the second himself as Ricardo Gareca’s side ended Australia’s qualification hopes with a 2-0 victory.
