UNN graduates 207 medical doctors, dental surgeons

The Nigerian healthcare sector received a significant boost over the weekend as the University of Nigeria, UNN, College of Medicine produced 207 young medical professionals.

Among the graduates, 165 have become medical doctors, while 42 have become dental surgeons.

Notably, there is a higher number of female doctors compared to their male counterparts among the new graduates.

The graduates were presented to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for induction at a joint ceremony held at the Ituku-Ozalla Campus, Enugu State.

Speaking with newsmen after the event, the Provost, College of Medicine, UNN, Prof. Hyginus Uzo Ezegwui, said the doctors had been found worthy in character and learning in line with the dreams of the founding fathers of the university.

He expressed happiness that the event took place despite the biting economic challenges in the country, saying that even the students persevered and still succeeded with many scoring distinctions.

He noted: “I’m very happy that this event took place today despite the current economic situation in the country. We’re so happy today to have graduated 165 medical doctors and 42 dental surgeons. We are even happier because of the several distinctions some of them made as students before graduating.

“Even though the situation in the country is biting so hard, our students persevered and still succeeded in what they were doing.”

The provost, who used the opportunity to clarify why there were more female doctors than men, said it was a reflection of women’s empowerment and awareness.

He said: “There are more women now moving into medical practice. That doesn’t mean that the interest of men is declining in medicine.

“It’s only a reflection of women empowerment and awareness in the country at large particularly in the Southeast here where more women are known to be educated. As the years go by, more females are developing interest.”

Ezegwui also spoke about unemployment in the medical sector and the drive to seek greener pastures by young doctors, saying Nigerian doctors are hardly affected because they have a global market.

According to him, Nigeria as a nation has not met the need of a doctor-patient ratio.

He said: “Yes, a whole lot of them are leaving the country for greener pastures because that is where they are valued more.

“We try as much as possible not to really encourage them to stay. But with the dwindling economy, even though the present government is trying to make an effort, they get better offers abroad and then they leave and we find it difficult to discourage them.”

19 benefit from group’s dental defects makeover

Five of the 19 beneficiaries of Project Smile have certain things in common:  dental flaws and defects. Destiny smiled on them through the Project Smile, a corporate social initiative of Smile360 Dental Specialists. OYEYEMI GBENGA-MUSTAPHA writes on how the programme is transforming people’s lives.

Project Smile is a social initiative that identifies individuals with dental flaws and defects who would want their defects corrected but are handicapped financial.

Designed to engage individuals through a contest, the initiative encourages response to its eight-week call for entry campaign. The candidates are subjected to various stages of screening and shortlisted for the final clinical evaluation. Finally, three winners are determined in three main categories-severe, moderate or mild. The goal of the initiative is to transform 500 people with a smile makeover by the 10th season. In all, 19 people have emerged.

For a 36-year-old civil servant, Mrs Funmilayo Olufa who had an accident and lost all her teeth in the process and developed a severity of dental flaw, life was never the same again. She lost her confidence. According to her, she regained her confidence after undergoing the Smile makeover.

Before the Smile makeover, Funmi’ lost her looks but few stages into the Smile makeover, her friends could recognise her. She recalled: “A friend and long-time classmate of mine that I lost contact with some 15 years ago saw me at a bus stop and shouted my name. I was happy she could recognise me because some couldn’t before the Smile makeover. I am so happy that though the Smile makeover is yet to be completed, the positive effects on me are tremendous. Regaining my confidence is the best part of my transformation story thus far.”

Chichi Anosike, sole beneficiary, Project Smile maiden edition in 2011 had an accident that damaged her dentition and seriously affected her facial expression. She heard about the Project Smile and was requested to write why she thinks she needed a Smile makeover. She had completed her Smile makeover and today she says with confidence, “I can flick off a dazzling smile easily without being conscious of it.” She thanked Project Smile and Smile360 for restoring her dentition.

A 24-year-old creative writer, Adelekan Tayo, said whenever he talked to people, they are ever conscious of his teeth. And he always feels dejected as a man. He was always worried and perplexed. He got to know about the Project Smile through listening to the jingle on a broadcast station.

According to Tayo, he reluctantly put in an entry, thinking that it couldn’t be true. When he was selected through a credible screening done by an independent panel, he said he couldn’t believe it. Going through the Smile makeover, he was delighted, aware that it was what he had always desired.

“The project is not about reconstructing the dentition alone but also building on the psychological confidence. I did not pay a dime. The members of staff are wonderful. It is a life-changing experience. It is a wonderful initiative,” he stated.

Mobola Abodunrin, 31-year-old Marketing/Brand Manager said: “As an image maker in a communication firm, having an over-protruding gum and teeth could be worrisome. That is always the focus of attention when I am interacting with people. I became an introvert inadvertently because I was disturbed emotionally.”

Mobola heard about the Project Smile through a friend and put in an entry. She was lucky to be selected and just going through the Smile makeover, she is already experiencing a turn-around. When Mobola was on the braces, some people actually thought it was for cosmetics reasons and complimented her equally. “I like your rocks,” they would say.

Mobola said: “I corrected their impressions I told them that it was part of medical procedures. And now I am gaining more confidence than before. People do admire me wearing the braces. I don’t receive curious looks or comments again. Though I am not through with the Smile makeover, the stages I had gone through have already changed my life and psychology. I knew I needed the Smile makeover but could not afford same. For this, I am grateful to Project Smile.”

For 22-year-old Dumebi Olanne; a final year student of Mass Communication at Babcock University, it was a real life changing experience; having gone through some stages of Smile makeover. Being born with bad dentition, she had lived an hermit life. She loved surfing the net and one day, she stumbled on Smile360 Project.

Her mother encouraged her to put in an application. She did and was shortlisted but no sponsor was there for her. As she made to depart the venue, a participant saw her dejection and wouldn’t allow her to go with that look. The participant sponsored her for the Smile makeover and today, Dumebi smiles more, talks more and is looking forward to a more prosperous life as a budding lady.

Dr Amy B. Traore-Shumbusho is the founder of Smile360 Dental Specialist, Ikoyi Lagos.

Explaining the rationale behind her effort, Dr Amy, as she is fondly called, said the ability to change people’s lives with a great smile is powerful and a privilege.

Recounting some of the achievements of the initiative in the past three seasons in view of the goal and mission set out to give great smiles since the commencement of the project in 2011.  Dr Traore-Shumbusho said the last three seasons of Project Smile has achieved remarkable success with a record of 19 beneficiaries most of whom are still undergoing their dental corrective surgery and treatment.

“As we joined all dental stakeholders and the general public to mark this year’s World Oral Health Day, (WOHD) there is no better time to pause and recount our successes than this momentous period in the dental world. The World Oral Health Day has always been epochal in launching each season of the Project Smile Initiative.

  • Don advises dental surgeons at graduation

Don advises dental surgeons at graduation

When former Nigerian President, the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe founded the University of Nigeria Nsukka in 1960, his dream was to establish a citadel of learning and research in a bid to halt the exodus of Nigerians to foreign countries in search of the Golden Fleece.

To achieve that desire of excellence, he recruited the best of academic and non- academic staff from parts of Europe to lay a solid foundation for a university that could compare favourably with any around the globe.

It was in pursuance of this noble objective that the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of the institution, Dr. Linda Oge Okoye, restated her determination to make the faculty the best dental training centre in the world.

Speaking during the third induction ceremony of dental surgeons of the University of Nigeria Nsukka at the faculty’s main hall of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State, Dr. Linda Okoye said in order to keep the dreams of the founding fathers alive, management had not only increased their training capacity but has also provided an atmosphere conducive enough to teaching and learning.

She noted that since the accreditation of the faculty programme in 2004, efforts had been made to equip it with the state-of-the-art facilities, while experienced academic and non-academic staff had been recruited to elevate the status of the school to international standard.

She also added that their collaborative linkage educational programme with the University of British Columbia had yielded great dividends, with more than five dental surgeons from UNN benefiting from the scheme.

Despite the feat achieved by the faculty, the Dean, fondly addressed as the doyen of Dentistry in Africa by professional colleagues of hers, stated that more was still needed to truly place UNN as a centre of excellence for dental training on the continent.

“Since dentistry is an expensive profession, we therefore enjoin all stakeholders, government and corporate bodies in Nigeria to support the dream of the only Faculty of Dentistry in the entire Eastern Nigeria with more funding. Just as an adage says if you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together. To the alumni, there is strength in unity.

We have capacity to make this school the best in the world, if we can come together,” she said.

To the graduating young dental surgeons, the Dean challenged them to exhibit those rare qualities that distinguish them from other surgeons, adding that “it takes a lot of hard work, discipline and patience to earn a Bachelor of Dental Surgery Degree of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. These are the same virtues you need to succeed in life”.

She said:  “I have no doubt therefore, that you have what it takes to excel and succeed in life. You are today licensed to practice your profession with dignity to the service of God and humanity. My personal expectation and wish for you all is that the licenses you receive today should enable you to stand out in the dental profession, both in Nigeria and elsewhere.”

Administering the oath of allegiance on behalf of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, the outgoing Provost of the College of Medicine of the University of Nigeria, Prof. Basden Onwubere, under whose tenure the Faculty of Dentistry blossomed, urged the graduates to shun the get-rich-quick syndrome of society and aim for excellence and discharge their duties creditably, even as he reminded them of the need to be of great assistance to their alma mater at all times.

Onwubere, who won the Africa’s best provost award by African Medical Students last year, observed that following the impressive performance of graduates of dentistry from UNN in the field at the local and international scenes since 2004, the Faculty of Dentistry of the university had come to stay.

He said the university Senate had recently praised the College of Medicine team for the performance of dental surgeons from UNN and also praised the efforts of the Dean, the academic and non-academic staff of the faculty for this feat. He expressed his hope that the effort would be sustained.

The Provost, who also represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chukwuma Ozumba, on the occasion, announced that the college had concluded arrangement to build a shopping mall, bank and a centre of excellence for staff and students within the college premises, while the ultra-modern medical library under construction would be completed within the next one year to boost learning and research.

In a valedictory speech, the best graduating student of the class of 2013, Faculty of Dentistry, Dr. Obinna Franklin Eboh, called for the establishment of the Department of Dentistry at health centres in all rural communities of the country. He regretted that despite the importance of oral healthcare, government was not doing enough, as most Nigerians know little or nothing about oral health.

Dr. Eboh expressed joy that a journey that started seven years ago, had been blessed with success, even as he thanked the lecturers and their parents for their support.

Earlier in a lecture to mark the occasion, chairman of the Nigerian Dental Association, Enugu State branch, Dr. Felix Chukwuneke, emphasised the need for the graduating students to maintain ethics in the discharge of their medical practice, stressing that the duty of care should be paramount in the relationship between the clinician and patients.

Dr. Chukwuneke, a union leader and one of the pioneers of the faculty, enjoined the graduates to make a difference in a positive way in the medical profession, as that is what they owe the present and future generations of Nigerians.

He admonished them: “As you go into the world of dental practice, you should always remember the “Hippocratic oath” which you took before all the dignitaries, your senior colleagues and your parents here today.”

Two of the eight graduates, Dr. Obinna Eboh and Dr. Martins Chibuike received all the four prizes available in child dental health, preventive dentistry, restorative dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Two former Deputy Vice-Chancellors of the Enugu Campus of the university, Prof. Bede Ibe and Prof. Sam Ohaegbulam as well as the former Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Etisiobi Ndiokwelu, were among top academics that attended the event.

  • Traders get free dental care

    Traders get free dental care

TRADER and their customers have got free dental care from students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

The dental students were at the New Benin Market last Saturday to treat the traders and their customers under the free dental campaign of the Committee on Dental Education and Health (CODEH).

When CAMPUSLIFE visited the market, dental students were conducting several screenings on the traders, including blood pressure, body mass index analysis, halitosis and oral check-up.

President of the association, Samuel Ajagba, said the programme was part of the dental campaign of the association, saying it aimed at offering oral education to people.

“Many Nigerians hardly present themselves for dental check-upthese days. This is a challenge we intend to tackle through this programme. That is why we decided to bring the campaign to the door steps of traders in Benin City,” he said.

Beneficiaries were taught how to take care of their oral cavity. Free toothpastes were distributed during the programme.Dental surgeons were also on ground to offer free counselling.

Meanwhile, people that had acute oral diseases were given referral letters to the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dentistry, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), in Ugbowo for proper medical attention.

Highpoint of the event was the presentation of customized ward coats to students who arrived early for the outreach. “The medical profession requires people who keep to time. You have to inculcate the habit of arriving early for programmes because it would help you succeed when you graduate,” Samuel said.

A primary two pupil of Iyobosa Primary School, Esther Omoruyi, thanked the students for the gesture. She promised to teach her friends in school how to manage their oral health.

“It would be better if dental clubs are established in schools so that children would be taught dental tips which they could pass on to their family members,” she said.

A 100-Level student of Dentistry and Dental Surgery, Igbinoba Nelson, said the outreach provided him an opportunity to learn basic oral diagnosis techniques. He encouraged the market women to regularly visit a dentist regularly.

  • Dental students pray

Members of the Benin University Dental Students Association (BUDSA) held a prayer session last week at the old dental clinic building of the College of Medical Sciences.

The association President, Samuel Ajagba, said the event was organised to thank God for sustaining members during the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike. He encouraged them to start preparing for their examinations.

The session,  which started at 5pm, featured intercessory prayers for the School of Dentistry, University of Benin,  ASUU and other academic bodies in the country.

Students expressed joy that the face-off between the Federal Government and ASUU had been resolved. They urged both parties to play their part in the signed agreement, in order to avert future industrial actions.

Meanwhile, lectures have been suspended in most faculties to allow students prepare for the examination which started on January 27. Some students told our correspondents that the pressure to finish the semester early was high, noting that it could affect their results.
