A print journalism teacher at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr Sunday Oloruntola, has been named the Acting Head of the Department of Mass Communication. Oloruntola graduated from the department in 1985.

There was no elaborate ceremony marking the change of leadership at the department, but the Acting HOD resumed duty amid prayer sessions anchored by Pastor Oluwasegun Oluwafemi, an alumnus of the department.

The session was attended by Oloruntola’s colleagues and classmates, including Online Editor of The Nation Mr Lekan Otunfodunrin, the department’s administrative officers and members of the Mass Communication Students Association (MCSA).

During the session, Oluwafemi praised the management for the academic and facilities development in the department.

He said: “We have every reason to thank God today as communicators. This indeed is a fulfilment of prophecy. We thank God for this department. This is a new beginning, new horizon, and it shall manifest. Dr Oloruntola should rest assured of our support. We will do all we can to ensure that the department continues to move forward.”

Responding, Oloruntola appreciated his colleagues and students, who graced the occasion. He sought for their support and promised to carry everybody along in running the department.

Academic activities gave way to electioneering, last Wednesday, at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Television College (TV COLLEGE) in Jos, the Plateau State capital. Students of the college went to polls to elect their leaders in departments of the institution.

Zakiya Usman, a 300-Level Television Journalism student, was elected the first woman president of Television Journalism Students’ Association (TEJOSA).

Election of Television Production Students Association (TEPSA) ended in controversy as one of the presidential candidates, George Holly, got disqualified moments before the election started.

The electoral committee chairman, Mr Mohammed Babawuro, said the disqualification was in line with the guidelines of the election.

He said: “The electoral committee worked with all the guidelines governing electoral conduct to ensure credible, transparent, free and fair election is conducted in the interest of all students and management of the college.”

He added that George’s disqualification was not conceived in the last minutes to the polls, noting that the candidate did not meet the criteria to stand for election. The barred student was also said to have ongoing disciplinary case with the authorities, while his academic results could not be accessed.

George supporters, who besieged the election venue in their numbers, left in anger, threatening to disrupt the process if their candidate was not recalled. George pleaded with his supporters not to resort to violence, saying there was no cause for alarm.

    Dept gets female president

There was a spontaneous jubilation by female students in the department of Political Science of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) last week following the suspension of the president of the department and immediate ascension of one of them, Shakirat Adesina, as the acting president of the National Association of Political Science Students, (NAPSS).

The president, Charles Aiyedun, who is in 400-Level, was allegedly suspended indefinitely for failing to honour invitations by legislative arms of the association. The Speaker of the parliament, Adeniyi Adediran, 300-Level student, said the suspended president was invited three times by the parliament to ascertain the state of the association but Charles did not honour the invitations.

“In view of that, the honourable members, after due deliberations, found it expedient to suspend the president because we believe in accountability,” Adeniyi said.

He added: “The Vice President has been asked to take over in acting capacity in order to continue the administration pending the time the suspended president will present himself before the parliament of NAPSS.”

He advised the students and outsiders to refrain from relating to Charles as president as such relationship would be at their own risk. Shakirat said she accepted the offer because of the department’s constitution and not in act of betrayal.
