Stop blocking canals, deputy governor tells residents

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule has urged residents to desist from dumping refuse in canals and drainage. Such “indecent” acts, she said, cause flooding when it rains and pose danger to government’s  and others investment.

Mrs Adebule, after monitoring the monthly environmental sanitation at Ojo Local Government, expressed her displeasure at the state of canals within the council.

She lamented that residents were fond of dumping refuse in canals within the council.

This, she noted, had blocked the free flow of water, thereby causing environmental hazards and flooding.

“Today, we are here at Ojo Local Government and it is disheartening that our people are still in the habit of dumping refuse in the canals and as we have noted, this is the reason why almost all the canals are blocked, despite all our previous efforts and intervention here.  Our people must desist from doing this; they are mostly affected by problems caused by such acts and government is also worried that funds that are supposed to be channelled to other developmental projects are used to clear canals and drainage all the time,” Mrs Adebule said.

She continued: “Our people usually blame government for flooding during the rain, but it is important we understand that we are the major cause of these things.  The government had cleared most of these canals here in the recent past, yet today, we are faced with the same problem and challenge of blocked drainage and canals and as usual, government is expected to clear them again”.

The Deputy Governor said public enlightenment and sensitisation would be increased to educate the people on the dangers of improper refuse disposal and the need to obey environmental laws for their own safety and well being.

She said government agencies, Community Development Committee (CDC) and Community Development Associations (CDAs) would be empowered to relay the message to others and ensure that everyone protects the environment.

The monitoring team visited Ojo-Igbede, Mogaji, Ifelodun, Alaba International Market and Ajagbandi area of the local government.

Ebonyi State Deputy Governor Kelechi Igwe at the weekend, berated the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Steve Orogwu on the N160 million tractors procured in 2013 by the last administration and which are decaying.

Igwe, accompanied by the SSG, Head of Service and Chief of Staff, paid an unscheduled visit to the various state ministries.

The deputy governor described the procurement as a wastage of scare resources and public funds.

He said: “It is terrible that a state government can waste a whooping N160 million in the procurement of tractors they do not plan to use and which are already decaying and can never be used again.

“We are talking of wastages and this is one of it. I think as a Permanent Secretary you would have guided government on the procurement, if at all there was a need to.

“It is very wasteful for government to engage in this type of business and Governor Dave Umahi will undertake a facility tour of all the infrastructures.

“Ebonyi State is regarded as one of the states ridden with poverty and if government can throw away N160 million, it is unfortunate”.

Igwe explained that the present government will create the Ministry of Planning, Evaluation and Strategy to take care of things of such nature.

Charge deputy governor with violence, says Ekiti APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to charge the Deputy Governor, Kolapo Olusola, with election violence.

Olusola allegedly directed his security aide to shoot an APC member, Jide Owolabi, in Ikere-Ekiti, during Saturday’s elections.

The APC also asked INEC to cancel the result in Ire-Ekiti for violence and ballot box snatching.

The party’s Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, said in a statement that the two incidents were strategies by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to influence the election.

He alleged that the deputy governor’s action in Ikere-Ekiti was a reckless display of lawlessness and flagrant abuse of power to intimidate the opposition.

Olatubosun said: “What happened in Ikere-Ekiti was a premeditated incident to cow the opposition to submission. We earlier raised the alerted to the plan by top officials of the Ayodele Fayose administration to employ violence and intimidation to cow our members to enable them manipulate the electoral process.

“We wrote the security agencies, including local and international human rights’ groups, about PDP’s plan. Saturday’s incident was a manifestation of such fears.

“The deputy governor cannot claim ignorance of the provisions of the Electoral Act prohibiting movement of government officials from one unit to the other on election day.

“He can’t claim ignorance of the law that disallows government officials’ security men to carry weapons during elections. It is clear that the deputy governor was not accredited to carry out any election duty, including providing or restoring order where there is violence.

“But he deliberately exercised a reckless abuse of power by leaving his unit with his armed security who he ordered to shoot our member for complaining that his interference in other polling units outside his unit is a breach of the law.”

The APC spokesman said the INEC and security agencies should not allow this attempted murder to go uninvestigated and charge the deputy governor with electoral violence.

It will also require the installation of water treatment unit and other facilities that will make life easy for the people who drink from the water source.

But, a member of his campaign team, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said: “Our principal is being guided by the party on the choice of his deputy. We are going to weigh all the options and come up with the best for the party and the state.”

  • Ita Giwa for Deputy Governor?

    Ita Giwa for Deputy Governor?

AHEAD of the 2015 general elections, politics and politicians are really getting very interesting by the day. Specifically, the politics of erstwhile docile Cross River State is becoming full of intrigues and permutations too.

If feelers emanating from the camp of one of the governorship aspirants in the state is anything to go by, then Senator Ita Giwa, former presidential liaison officer to the National Assembly, may be on her way to becoming a deputy governorship aspirant.

Ripples learnt that she is being considered for the number two position on the ticket in the event that the said aspirant emerges as the flag bearer of the ruling party in the oily state. Perhaps, this explains why the flamboyant politician has suddenly become very outspoken in support of the aspirant of late.

Anyway, these are uncertain times indeed. Otherwise, one may want to wonder if Ita Giwa would really love to take up the job of a spare tyre after all she has been.
