Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has named two medical students hostel at Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, after two former deputy governors, Modupe Adelabu and the late Bisi Egbeyemi.

The women’s hostel was named after Prof Adelabu, deputy governor from May 8, 2013 to October 15, 2014, while the men’s was named after Chief Egbeyemi, deputy governor from October 16, 2018 to October 15, 2022.

Bamidele, who spoke during the inauguration, said the facilities were named after the deputy governors in recognition of their contributions to development of the state.

Oyebanji lauded the Senate leader for his commitment to development of the state.

He said infrastructural development in EKSU will boost its capacity to deliver quality education, and aid human capital development agenda.

Stressing collaboration, the governor said he would work with all to develop the state, irrespective of political or religious affiliation.

Police arrest school principal, deputy for flogging student to death

    • How pupil passed on after 105 strokes for absenteeism

The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the Principal and Vice Principal of Al-Azhar School in Zaria, Kaduna State for their alleged involvement in corporal punishment, which resulted in the death of a student of the school.

Marwanu Nuhu Sambo, a JSS 3 pupil, was allegedly brutally beaten by the Principal, the Vice Principal and some prefects of Al-Azhar Academy for absenting himself in school.

Contacted yesterday to confirm the statement issued by the school’s management that those involved in the ugly Friday incident had been arrested, the Public Relations Officer for the command, Mansir Hassan, said “the police is fully aware of the incident and we are in control of the situation.”

“Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the development. The CP has directed a full scale investigation on the matter and we will get to its root,” Hassan said.

It was gathered that Sambo was paraded in front of the school’s assembly for missing classes. He was also said to have been subjected to merciless punishments including more than 100 strokes of the cane.

Hassan added: “At the assembly, the principal ordered that Marwanu should be given 105 strokes of the cane. Thereafter, they took him to the office, removed his clothes and trousers and continued beating him with sticks on the head and back and his body.

“The Principal later handed him over to the school prefects who continued beating him with sticks until one of his teeth fell off. It was at that point that the deceased went into coma.

“But instead of rushing him to the hospital, the prefects brought him out and dumped his body in the school premises near the male toilets until closing time.

“Cries from other students in the school who watched in trepidation reportedly attracted other teachers who rushed to the scene where they found that the boy had given up the ghost.”

Another source said the student was rushed to a private hospital in Zaria, but was confirmed dead by the hospital.

In a statement it issued on the sad incident, the school’s management said the punishment meted out to the deceased pupil was not part of the school’s policy, adding that the officers who imposed “the irresponsible punishment did it without consultation.”

The school’s management also said it was “deeply saddened by the incident that led to the death of the student and prays almighty Allah to forgive the shortcoming of the deceased, grant him jannat elfirdous as his final abode and give his family the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.

“Furthermore, the officers that committed this act were suspended from the school forthwith and handed over to the Nigerian Police Force for investigation and further action.

“Finally the School is closed for Academic activities till further notice.”

  • Ogun APC group tasks governor-elect, deputy on infrastructure

A socio-political group within the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Frontiers (NSO-F), has tasked the incoming government of Prince Dapo Abiodun and his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, to pay urgent attention to the infrastructural needs of the people of the state, once they take office in May. The group lamented what it described as the very sorry state of infrastructure across the state.

The Coordinator of the group, Comrade AbdulKareem Adesina, who spoke during a thanksgiving reception organized by the group for the deputy-governor-elect at Ota at the weekend, said the people of the state who voted massively for APC inspite of efforts to deceive them into doing otherwise, are expecting the new government to turn the fortunes of the state around positively.

He appreciated the person of the deputy governor-elect, describing her as a worthy daughter of Ota-land. He tasked her to use her good office to attract development to the area which has suffered untold neglect from successive administration in spite of its huge contribution to the revenue of the state.

Responding, the deputy governor-elect, Oyedele-Salako, who was in attendance at the event, thanked members of the group for going the extra mile in their support for her and the APC “without collecting a kobo from her or the party.” She promised to work for the people and assured them that the incoming governor of the state, Prince Dapo Abiodun did not seek political power for any other reason other than to better the lot of the people.

“We are not here to milk the state but to work hard and turn the fortunes of Ogun state around for better. So we believe God that achieving success will not be difficult for us. We didn’t just promise the people, we meant to achieve all we offered to do. Moving round the state during the campaigns, we have seen the many needs of our people in the nooks and crannies of the state. And I can assure you that gradually, we will touch every part of the state,” she promised.

  • Ambode, deputy to Muslims: continue good deeds after Ramadan

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and his deputy, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule have enjoined Muslims to continue to uphold the tenets of Islam beyond the month of Ramadan by strengthening their faith in God, showing love to one another and always embracing peace and harmony while resolving conflict.

The duo made the call at a Special Ramadan Lecture and Iftar organised by Adebule for Muslims at her official residence in Ikoyi.

The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Tunji Bello noted that since Islam as a religion preaches peace, unity and love, Muslim faithful should always love one another and strengthen their relations with fellow human beings irrespective of their beliefs, tribes or culture, adding that more developments would be achieved where there is peace and tranquillity.

Adebule urged Muslims to remain steadfast, committed, peaceful to the worship of Allah and continue to pray for the development of the state and prosperity of Nigeria as a whole.

According to her, Ramadan is a period of prayer, thanksgiving, forgiveness, spiritual training, and self-examination.

Muslim faithful, she said, should avoid acts and things forbidden by Islam during and after the holy month.

She called on Nigerians to always avoid violence or other acts capable of undermining developments in the society.

Her husband, Alhaji Saheed Adebule, advised Muslims to remain steadfast in their daily prayers and to extend love and care to their neighbours.

”We have to be steadfast to remain with God, that is what we require to make our nation great,” he said.

The guest speaker, Alhaji Dhikrullah Hassan urged Muslims to always be upright, steadfast and depend totally on God for everything.

“We are faced with enormous challenges today because we have refused to be steadfast in our service to God, we have refused to trust and depend on God.

”We need to retrace our steps, avoid unlawful acts, pray and communicate more with God; and allow God to do His will. Depend on Him solely for everything because Allah does not forget His duties,” Hassan, the Osun State Amirul Hajj, said.

  • Bauchi governor shops for deputy

Bauchi State Governor Mohammed Abubakar is shopping for a deputy governor to replace Nuhu Gidado, who resigned last Wednesday.

His Press Secretary, Abubakar Sadique, who confirmed this in a statement at the weekend, said: “Governor Mohammed Abubakar will start selecting a new deputy governor to fill the vacuum created following the resignation of Engineer Nuhu Gidado as deputy governor.”

But a source in the Government House said “the process of selecting a deputy governor was completed long before Gidado resigned”.

“Gidado could no longer withstand the unhealthy smoke in the kitchen and that is why he resigned as a honest man.

“Politically, Gidado is matured to lead Bauchi because he understands the state well enough. But his principal was a character he could not cope with till their four-year tenure elapsed.”

Though the source declined to name likely successors, he said “one of the persons could come from the Government House, another from the party and one from the civil service. But from typical Katagum.”

The source added that “a deputy governor is most likely to be presented to the House of Assembly before end of Ramadan for confirmation.”

  • Amaechi’s supporters berate Wike for ‘marginalising’ deputy

Amaechi’s supporters berate Wike for ‘marginalising’ deputy

A pan-Rivers group committed to the well-being of the state, Inter-ethnic Network for Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi (INCRA), has berated Governor Nyesom Wike for allegedly neglecting Deputy Governor Ipalibo Harry-Banigo.

It urged well-meaning persons to save the Office of the Deputy Governor from alleged despotic political manipulation.

INCRA, yesterday in Port Harcourt, through a member of its Interim Management Team, Iselema Jack, expressed displeasure at the demeaning treatment allegedly meted out to Harry-Banigo, and her aides, by Wike.

The group alleged: “We consider it pertinent to let out this outcry and salvage the revered Office of the Deputy Governor of Rivers State and its occupant from the vicious political manipulations, aimed at smothering Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo and reducing her office to a mere appendage of the governor.

“Our concern derives principally from our core objective of engaging in activities that promote an efficient public process and advance good governance in Rivers State. As Rivers people, our interest in the progress of Rivers State rises above partisan limitations.

“We have been observing series of events for a while and we consider the Rivers governor’s oppressive disposition towards the deputy governor and her office very vexatious and unbecoming at this point in time.

“The Rivers deputy governor has been a victim of a consuming and high-level political power play within the Government House, Port Harcourt. Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo is no more than a glorified Personal Assistant (P.A.) to the governor and this position does not support democratic usages and the efficient and transparent running of the government.

“More troubling is the fact that the Office of the Rivers Deputy Governor is now supine, decorative and does not serve any important administrative or political purpose. The office is poorly funded and Dr. Harry-Banigo is unable to pay the salaries and allowances of her appendages. One of her aides, Mrs. Ibinabo Marshall-Harry, has relocated abroad, while Messrs. Gilbert Brian, Asemota Uki, Frank Emenike and others have been relieved of their duties, due to poor funding of the office. Her daughter, who is also her Senior Special Assistant on General Duties, is understandably the only one left at the moment.”

INCRA alleged that it is sad that Harry-Banigo has been unable to assess the main Government House, from her office, making her to go through the main gate as other visitors, to attend the Executive Council meetings, as a ‘mere participant’.

It further alleged: “We are surprised that Wike will subject the deputy governor to this sort of mortifying treatment, considering that she lacks the political clout to unseat him or even pose a threat to him. Is this an indication of the governor’s rumoured misogyny or a reflection of his despotic tendencies?

“It is evident to all that Dr. Harry-Banigo chooses to follow a noble political path and has not shown any flare for the kind of earthy politics the governor indulges in. We believe strongly that the deputy governor’s refusal to join Wike in his campaign of calumny against his predecessor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, now transportation Minister, is a major reason for the humiliating treatment the governor has subjected her to.

“In the light of these undemocratic manifestations by Wike against his deputy, we call on the State Executive Council, the Speaker of House of Assembly, Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, members, the Chief Judge, Justice Adama Iyayi-Lamikanra, as the head of the judiciary; civil rights groups, stakeholders and the public to rise to the occasion and speak against this emerging evil and highhandedness against the deputy governor.”

The Head of Press Unit, Deputy Governor’s Office, Government House, Port Harcourt, Owupele Benebo, has said the relationship between Governor Nyesom Wike and his deputy, Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, is very cordial, as they work as a team.

He alleged that INCRA wanted to cause disaffection between them.

Benebo said: “Our first reaction was to dismiss the story with a wave of hand; since it has no iota of truth, but on a second thought, we felt keeping silent would mean an acceptance of the blatant lie.

”We wish to state categorically that Harry-Banigo and Wike enjoy a very cordial relationship. The governor has never in any disguise oppressed his deputy or undermined her office.”

  • Akinwunmi: Fayose’s deputy can succeed him

Akinwunmi: Fayose’s deputy can succeed him

Dickson Akinwumi is a former Private Secretary to the late Mrs. Hannah Dideolu Awolowo and the President of ‘Concerned Ekiti Professionals for Good Governance.’ In this interview with reporters in Ado- Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, he speaks on the chances of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the governorship poll. Sunday Omoniyi was there.

What is your assessment of the Fayose administration in the last three years?

Since Ekiti State people chose Governor Ayodele Fayose to govern them right from his first tenure in 2003, I don’t think the people have regretted ever voting for him. In his first term in office, he was able to commence add and complete the dualisation of the township roads in the capital city of Ado Ekiti. It was obvious that his good works made it easy for him to be re-elected in 2014. Since then, he has surpassed the achievements of anybody, either military or civilian who had at one time of the other governed the state.  Fayose built the state-owned Fountain Hotel; dualised the Ado-Ikere Ekiti road; expanded the Ilawe Ekiti, Ijero Ekiti and Ikere Ekiti township roads and built the only computer village in Ado Ekiti. Even with the meagre resources, particularly its low internally generated revenue (IGR), Governor Fayose embarked on the construction of the ultra-modern Oba market in Ado Ekiti. This is a market that has about 400 shops, with a park that can contain so many cars. I want to also commend the governor for constructing a flyover from Fajuyi area of the town to ease the flow of traffic in the state capital. The government has also been able to empower many of the local artisans, by patronising them. The government’s efforts in the educational sector have also started yielding fruit, as the results of Ekiti students have greatly improved in both WAEC and NECO examinations. Fayose has also done well in the area of internal security, where this government made efforts to checkmate external forces from disturbing the peace of the state. In all of these, Governor Fayose still remains one of the most criticised governors in the country. He is also one of the very few that criticises the government of President Muhammadu Buhari. Most times, this has made him incur the wrath of many Nigerians. He has constantly remained a vociferous critic of the Buhari-led government. In all of these, I think the government of Fayose needs to improve in areas such as agriculture, tourism, sports and IGR.

What can we say about his critics?

Those who criticise Fayose have done well. Their constant criticism has made him more popular; it spurs him to deliver more on the dividends of democracy. The constant criticism propels him to constantly be on his toes, in order to improve on the lots of the people. I must also state that some critics are sometimes sentimental, because they are not from the governor’s political party. Thus, some of the criticisms are politically motivated. In the midst of these criticisms, some of us still give kudos to both the critics and the criticised, because, if all are done without bias, it is still part of our democratic process.

What is your take on Fayose’s endorsement of his deputy?

Let me tell you, endorsement is part and parcel of our entire lives. In traditional setting, kingmakers have the right to endorse who becomes the next king in a town or kingdom. In a church, a sitting general overseer or the church’s parochial council or board of trustees has the right to endorse who becomes the next general overseer. In the corporate world, the founder of a company has the right to either nominate or endorse who becomes the next managing director of the company. Look, endorsement has been and will ever remain part of our democratic culture or corporate existence. Now back to the endorsement of Prof. Kolapo Olusola Eleka, there is still a time for primary elections, which I believe will take place in April this year and I want to implore other aspirants to work very hard with the delegates who will vote during the primary. I have been involved in observing the politics of the state for a very long time. Let me inform you that a former governor, Chief Segun Oni, did not win the primary of the PDP. He came fourth in the primary held at Trade Fair Complex, Ado Ekiti. Chief Yinka Akerele came first and Prof. Ojo came second, but the party leadership gave the ticket to Oni, after so much energy and time had been exerted in the selection or election process. Heaven did not fall then. Some of the bigwigs now aspiring to contest against Prof. Eleka were very senior or influential party members then. I can boldly tell you that Ambassador Dare Bejide, Senator Biodun Olujimi, who are now raising eyebrows towards the 2018 governorship primary election, either ignorantly or intentionally or covertly refused to raise eyebrows then. While I still believe that Governor Fayose has the right to endorse anyone he prefers as his successor, and Professor Eleka’s co-aspirants too have the moral rights to contest, I want to implore all of them to desist from acts that could ignite violence in the process. Ekiti State is for all of us and we must all join hands to put the state on the path of progress and development.

Is the PDP ready for 2019?

Nigerians voted for the APC in 2015 in order to bring about the promised change. As things are now, it is evident that Nigerians are not impressed with the government of President Muhammadu Buhari and this is energising the PDP to make moves to regain power. The PDP as a party is getting set to regain the lost territories. The first step was the recently held national convention which produced Chief Uche Secondus as the National Chairman of the party. Though there were some grievances after the convention, it is normal in Nigerian democracy. It is a plus that the party held an open election and people campaigned, people voted and a winner emerged. The party has put a reconciliation body in place and the process is achieving results.

  • Ganduje, deputy: Crack on the wall

Ganduje, deputy: Crack on the wall

The rift between Kano State Governor Abdullahi  Ganduje and his deputy, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, blew last month during a political programme aired in some of the local radio stations in the state. Abubakar said that he was not prepared to be Ganduje’s running-mate in next year’s governorship elections.

To many, Prof. Hafiz outburst was a huge surprise. In a swift reaction Ganduje expressed shock over his deputy’s pronouncement. However, pundits are of the view that Hafiz decision may not be unconnected with the removal of his brother as the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman for Mandawari ward, his birth place, and the role played by the immediate-past chairman of the party, Prince Abdullahi Abbas, who voluntarily resigned his position. The deputy governor, who was a Deputy Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, he was not interested in joining Ganduje’s re-election bid in 2019, adding that he would go back to the university to continue his academic career.

He was angered over allegedly being sidelined by the Ganduje-led group in the formation of the party structure and the leadership at his ward and local government levels. Hafiz said: “When they were campaigning for election, my picture was juxtaposed with the governor, president and our leader Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. But today at my birthplace, my picture was replaced with somebody else’s picture. What have I done to my birthplace? I do not deserve this even as a university lecturer at Bayero University, where I hope to return in 2019 at the expiration of my tenure. I will not be part of a system whereby the leadership of my party, APC, would be formed at my Mandawari ward, my birthplace, and my brother removed without consulting me. I will never continue in this situation.”

However, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, who spoke on behalf of  Ganduje, he said the governor was shocked over the outburst and directed the immediate reinstatement of the chairman, while calling on politicians to always contact party leadership and politicians holding higher offices before taking sensitive decision.

Shortly after Hafiz declared his unwillingness to re-contest over 10 people with intimidating credentials have declared interest in his position. Those eyeing Hafiz’s job include two serving Vice Chancellors, one serving in a  university in the state, another one serving outside the state; two members of Kano State Executive Council, Professor of over 15 years,  a retired Permanent Secretary from the Federal Civil service.

A principal member of Kano State House of Assembly confirmed that he has received the calls from top citizens of the state advising him to sponsor an impeachment motion against the embattled Deputy Governor. According to him, “since yesterday when Prof. Hafiz made that pronouncement, I have personally received over 50 phone calls asking me to support his impeachment in the House. In fact when I spoke to some of our members on the issue this morning, they also confirmed receiving such phone calls.

He added: “Though I may not know his reason for making such a declaration, I view it as very unfortunate and a dent to his own image. If he feels he is no longer interested to serve the people, the honourable thing for to do was to quietly resign his from position and allow others who more capable to continue from where he stopped. From what he has said and the manner he said it, he has sent a wrong impression that all is not well between him and the governor which is not true. Everybody here in Kano and within the circle of government is aware that Governor Ganduje has given him free hand to operate. For all I know, he has never been sidelined, so only him can explain his reasons for betraying the mandate of the people.”

As an astute politician and seasoned administrator, who does not want his house consumed by fire, Ganduje hurriedly calmed frayed nerves. On his part, the erstwhile APC chairman,  Prince Abdullahi Abbas, who is the son of Galadiman Kano, resigned his appointment for peace to reign.

Although no reason was given for Abbas’ decision, it was learnt that Ganduje had already nominated him for the position of a Commissioner in his cabinet. Abbas has already been screened by the House of Assembly and confirmed by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata.

However, pundits have continued to wonder why Hafiz decided to have gone to the media to express his grievances rather than confiding in his boss—Ganduje.  A top APC chieftain in the state who craved anonymity told our Reporter that in this case, there is more than meets eyes.

According to him, “I can see that Prof. Hafiz is playing a script written by somebody. We all are aware that Ganduje trusted him. Apart from being the Deputy Governor, he gave him the juicy portfolio of Commissioner for Education. He has been made chairman of so many important Committees. The Governor would always allow him to act on his behalf. He has never been starved of fund. So, to people like us who know his link and loyalty to former Governor Kwankwaso, we believe Prof. Hafiz is playing the card of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

“We only pray that this drama ends well because at the end of its all, if anything happens, Prof. Hafiz will be the loser. For one thing, he has never been a grounded politician. He was a former Commissioner for Finance during Kwankwaso’s administration and we all are aware of the scandals that trailed that tenure. So, we still respect Prof. Hafiz and we believe he will realise that Governor Ganduje is a peace-loving man who cares for the welfare of all. As far as we are concerned, there is no rift between Ganduje and Prof. Hafiz as being rumoured.”

  • I’m a loyal deputy, says Olusola

I’m a loyal deputy, says Olusola

Ekiti State Deputy Governor Kolapo Olusola has described himself as an epitome of loyalty. He said Governor Ayo Fayose made him a running mate in 2014 on merit.

Olusola, who has been anointed by Fayose as his preferred successor, said he was chosen as the deputy governorship candidate on the strength of his intellectual competence and honesty.

He spoke at the  ‘Ekiti ‘State Students’ Summit 2017 ’ organised by the Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU) in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The deputy governor said the country may witness a dire consequence of allowing youths to be relegated without  recognition in terms of employments and policy-making processes, if proper steps are not taken.

Olusola who spoke on the theme of the Summit: ‘Youthfulness and Usefulness’,urged the youths to refrain from cultism, robbery, prostitution and other social vices, saying this remains the only way they can achieve greatness in life.

Olusola is a Professor of Building Technology at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.

At the event, FESSU, through its President, Peter Idowu Adewumi, gave awards to a member of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Samuel Omotoso, Commissioner for Agriculture in Ekiti, Hon. Kehinde Odebunmi, the Provost of the College of Science and Technology, Ijero Ekiti and  a young medical doctor,  Miss  Aarinola Olaiya.

Those who delivered  lectures  included: Vice Chancellor, Ekiti State University, Prof Samuel Oye Bandele, a lecturer at  the Department of Criminology and Security Studies, Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Ayodeji Ige and the Commissioner for Education in Ekiti, Mr Jide Egunjobi.

Olusola, who has been picked by Fayose as his preferred successor  in 2018 said: “Governor Fayose and the PDP had earlier been considering someone, but they said he was not intellectually capable.
