  • Shun desperate politicians, Ondo APC youths urged

Youths in the country have been urged to shun political bigotry ahead of the 2019 general elections in the country.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akoko Northeast local government of Ondo State, Najeem Olodeoku, gave the charge at a solidarity forum held in Ikare-Akoko.

The youth leader noted that youths constitute 70 percent of the electorate and should comport themselves with decorum as political campaigns that would herald the election proper have commenced.

He urged them to guard against being tools in the hands of desperate politicians for a token, which may land them in trouble eventually.

At the occasion attended by about 3,000 youths, Olodeokun noted that the achievements of the lawmaker representing Ondo North District, Prof Ajayi Boroffice, particularly in Akoko North East, gingered them to endorse him as their candidate.

The youth leader particularly listed the construction of classrooms at Agboriki Comprehensive High School, Cashew Processing Industry, Ikakunmo Akoko, and massive boreholes project across the local government.

Besides, he pointed out that the lawmaker also installed  solar mini grid at the State Specialist Hospital, Ikare Akoko, solar-powered electricity in Akoko North East, facilitation of federal government agency to Ikare Akoko, various empowerment programmes and assistance to many graduates to secure federal government jobs.

  • Nnamani warns Nigerians to be wary of desperate politicians

•Foreign group to invest in oil, gas, power

Ex-Senate President Ken Nnamani yesterday warned Nigerians to beware of desperate politicians without a second address.

He addressed State House correspondents after he and the Chairman of Chrome Oil and Gas, Chief Emeka Offor, led foreign businessmen to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s office.

Nnamani, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), advised struggling politicians to have a second address.

To politicians who do not have any other business apart from politics, he said: “I think our problem is that if you enter politics and you have no second address; the chances of your getting in trouble is very high.

“I am here strictly on business, they are talking about billions of dollars investment in Nigeria and that tells the confidence his company has in our country.

“I am not just a politician; I was in business before entering politics, so I have a second address and my suggestion to Nigerians who are struggling in politics is to make sure they have a second address. Don’t be a desperate politician; desperate politicians do desperate things and we can see the examples.”

Nnamani said he was part of the meeting to observe how the Federal Government would receive the investment proposal, adding that the government was receptive.

“I am here just to observe how receptive the government is to this. The government is quite receptive according to the vice-president; because they have made other investments in Nigeria and they are continuing to do so,” he said.

Offor said he brought foreign investors from Europe to meet the vice-president on the investment opportunities in oil, gas, power and electricity.

Said he: “We brought a major investing group from Europe. That’s why we are here. We are looking at investing in oil and gas, electricity and others.

“They have seen that the atmosphere in the country is conducive for investments. We are exploring the particular investment region we are going to invest in.”

Offor said they were partnering ELAND Oil and Gas from the United Kingdom, adding that the investment would be all encompassing and in billions.

The President of Integra Capita, Argentina, Dr. Jose Luis Manzanita, hailed the investment climate in Nigeria, which he said was conducive.

He said: “We are happy being in Nigeria. We like the business atmosphere. There is credibility. We believe Nigeria has material industry, but can produce much. We have already invested in Nigeria and we plan to do more.

“We work closely with ELAN. ELAN has been very successful. We support them and keep investing with them.

“The vice-president was so warm. He transmits the trust the government has in private investment.”

  • ‘Shun desperate politicians’

Bayelsa State government yesterday urged youths to protect their future by identifying and shunning political desperadoes ahead of 2019 elections.

Commissioner for Information and Orientation Daniel Iworiso-Markson told youths that desperate politicians would adopt wicked measures, including riding on the blood of youths to power.

Speaking to a group of youths under the auspices of the National Union of Ogbia Students (NUOS), Iworiso-Markson appealed to them to avoid being used as instruments to cause violence and destabilise the state.

He said desperate politicians were interested in exploiting youths to win elections and thereafter abandon them only to return to beg them with money after four years.

The commissioner urged the students to stand firm and resist the usual gimmick but to support aspirants known for their performance and love for the people.

Iworiso-Markson told them to be peaceful during elections, saying, “your lives are more important than the ambition of a desperate politician”.

The Information chief said his passion in life was to see to the development of young people with the capacity to rule their world.

He assured them of his support in their programmes, particularly the campaign against social vices in Ogbia.

“Let me thank you for coming and for taking up the sensitization to curb the rampaging issue of cultism, abuse of alcohol and drug addiction. It is imperative to curb these menace as well as proffer possible solutions needed.

“I endorse the programme and affirm my total support. This is because the rate of cultism and other social vices in Ogbia is alarming.

“There is a general break down in the family and when you have a broken home, social vices are inevitable. So we will address the problem from the root because we don’t want any Ogbia child to die due to cultism again”.

The group’s leader, Damini Patrick, earlier commended the government of Governor Seriake Dickson for developing Bayelsa, especially Ogbia Local Government.

He listed projects, such as the construction of Imiringi and Opume bridges, which are about 90 per cent completed, internal roads, among others.

Damini appreciated the commissioner for his contributions towards development of Ogbia and youths, in particular.

“The Ogbia students are really proud of you for piloting the affairs of the Restoration Government in this ministry gallantly. And we are strongly behind you.

“We are here to talk about our upcoming programme. There is a saying that if you want to harvest for a year then you should plant rice, if you want to harvest for 10 years you should plant tress but if you want to invest for hundred years then educate a child. And education to us is path to success.

“Dr. Goodluck Jonathan established a school in Otuoke because he knew that through education a better council is assured. But recently in Ogbia kingdom, our youths are deviating from education and now indulge themself in cultism, alcoholism and drug addiction and so many other social vices.

“I and my executives came together and said we need to fight this, this is a collective effort and we came up with the theme; curbing social vices in Ogbia Kingdom. So we thought it wise to see you as our representative in the restoration government to assist us in this programme”.

  • Youths warned against desperate politicians

The youth have been urged not to be deceived by people who are desperate for power come.

The Southern Youth Leaders Forum gave this warning yesterday.

A communique issued by Comrade Odeyemi Oladimeji on behalf of National Committee of Yoruba Youth, Fidelis Nze KSN (Igbo Youth Assembly) and Comrade Nathaniel Ekutu (South South Youth Coalition), hailed the sustained effort of the Federal government and stakeholders in the anti-corruption war.

Rising from a Summit of the group in Lagos, the youth endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term in office.

They also passed a Vote on Confidence on Nigeria’s Army Chief, General Tukur Buratai.

The group condemned what it termed “the various attempt by some politicians and people of vested interest, towards pushing the country, dangerously to the edge of the slope, particularly the antics of creating scares among our people, just for the purpose of ambitions tied towards the next year General elections.”

It also lauded the cooperation from the judiciary, towards ensuring a speedy dispensation of trials.

The group hailed the government for the restoration of peace in the troubled areas of the country.

  • CCT trial: ‘Desperate politicians’ want to sponsor protests against me, Saraki alleges

CCT trial: ‘Desperate politicians’ want to sponsor protests against me, Saraki alleges

Embattled Senate President Bukola Saraki yesterday accused those he branded desperate politicians  of plotting to unleash sponsored protests against him in the wake of his trial for alleged corruption by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

Saraki claimed yesterday that his political foes were out to turn the trial into a tool to damage his political career.

Such people, he said in a statement by his chief spokesman, Yusuph Olaniyonu, had started distributing money and other materials to faceless civil society organisations, market men and women associations and other shadowy groups with a view to instigating demonstrations in Lagos, Abuja and Ilorin starting from tomorrow.

The aim of the sponsors of the proposed protests, he said, was to pollute public opinion against him, through forceful mobilisation of anti-Saraki protesters.

The Senate President  is one of the 130 Nigerians mentioned in #PanamaPapers, the 11.5 million leaked financial and legal records of politicians, businessmen, celebrities, drug traffickers and sports stars from the internal database of the Panama-based law firm and offshore-provider, Mossack Fonseca.

He is said to own four assets abroad which were held in trust for him by proxies including his wife, Toyin.

However, the four companies traced to Saraki are Sandon Development Limited, a vehicle used in acquiring a property on 8 Whittaker Street, Belgravia, London, in 2012;  Girol Properties Ltd, which was registered on August 25, 2004 (a year after Mrs. Saraki’s husband became governor of Kwara) in the British Virgin Island (BVI); Landfield International Developments Ltd., registered in the British Virgin Islands on April 8, 2014, with  Mrs. Saraki as sole shareholder; and Longmeadow Holdings Limited.

A German newspaper, Süddeutsche Zeitung, had reported that the four assets which Saraki claimed belonged to  his wife’s rich and famous family, were actually his and were only held in trust for him by his wife, Toyin.

The newspaper also retrieved data exposing how the assets were transferred by Toyin to her husband, Bukola.

Apart from Saraki, some Nigerians similarly fingered as owners of hidden assets in tax havens included Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (Rtd), Mr. James Ibori, Senator David Mark, among others.

But the Senate President has continued to blame his political foes for his travails.

The statement added, “As part of their plan, they are already distributing money and other materials to some faceless civil society Organisations, market men and women associations and other shadowy groups, with a view to instigating demonstrations in Lagos, Abuja and Ilorin, starting from Monday, April 11.

“They believe that the on-going trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal provides them the opportunity to stampede Dr. Saraki out of office so that their defeated objective of getting their lackey into the office of Senate President will be realised.

“This is another desperate move by these spineless politicians to achieve through the back door what they failed to realize on the floor of the Senate.

“We are alerting members of the public to the antics of these desperate politicians which may result into breach of public peace, order and health. Dr. Saraki is a peace-loving and law abiding politician.

“The trial at the CCT is just beginning and while the prosecution’s witness has started giving evidence, he is yet to be cross-examined by the defence team. The defence has also not opened its own case. We urge members of the public to patiently wait for the conclusion of the case.

“Since the fundamental principle of our legal system is that an accused person is presumed innocent until he is found guilty, Dr. Saraki will not allow any distraction to take him away from his responsibility as President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly,” his official statement said.

  • Shun gifts from desperate politicians

Imo State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere has called on the youth of Imo State to desist from being willing tools in the hands of desperate politicians and reject their gift items which they use to lure them into captivity.

He also urged Nigerians to learn to live in peace; a virtue he said brings about progress in the society.

Prince Madumere spoke to a mammoth crowd of Imolites who participated at a New Year Cross over prayers and music and general concert, which was held at Lake Malinda home, in his home town, Achi Mbieri, Mbaitoli local government of the state.

Speaking further, he said where bitterness and vendetta are order of the day, there is hardly growth as people will lose the collective goal and work in cross purposes.

He called for understanding of individual differences to achieve a collective goal.

He said: “Shun the Greek gifts of desperate politicians who do not have your interest at heart. Their gifts are mainly to lure you and use you to achieve their selfish desires.”

The deputy governor said that, to sustain the people oriented policies and programmes initiated by the governor of the state Rochas Okorocha, all should come out en mass to vote at the February elections.

He reminded the people of the huge task ahead to sustain the people oriented policies and programmes of the state.

“The 2015 elections are here and your vote is your power. You have the opportunity to sustain the change or squander it. You must think future. You must not just go all out to cast your votes to your choice candidates; you must also ensure that no electoral thief comes close.”

While noting the downturn of the economy, he called for individual skill acquisition and entrepreneurial development.
