  • Pursue your destiny (X)

MY darling sisters and every fan of this column whose life is about to change forever,

I pray for you with all my heart that God will surprise you before the end of 2014 and put great laughter and joy in your mouth in Jesus name. AMEN! And as you prepare to go into the New Year, I urge you to examine your life and make a list of what you feel could have denied you of every good thing you’ve ever desired. Remember, the scriptures tell us the Lord’s arm is not too short to save us but our iniquities have separated us from Him. Hmm…do you know you have power over what has been setting you back and depriving you of the goodies of life all the while? May you discover the giant in you in Jesus name. Amen. I welcome you all to school on Sunday. Today, I’ll be concluding on the Fear of God which I’ve described as the most potent weapon needed for us to discover our purpose in life and how to get God’s divine plans for our lives to manifest.

    The Fear of God (Contd.)

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever. Psalm 111:10

Have you ever been in a situation when as you cried yourself to sleep, you wished you’d never wake up the following morning? Or you woke up one morning and wondered why you woke up again to a life of pain and wickedness. I have been through all that and so have so many women and girls, some of who unfortunately never came out of their despair but got weighed down by their circumstances and got completely knocked out by life. Sisters, that will never be your portion in Jesus name. However, the earlier you get yourself prepared for life’s vicissitudes by having a full understanding of God and the much needed wisdom, the better for you.

Wisdom is seeing life from God’s perspective and responding accordingly. Wisdom is a priority, and we are told to seek it above all else. Until our hearts are in a right relationship with God, we are unable to have the “wisdom that comes from heaven.” God who has always known all what we have to deal with in life also readily gives us victory and graciously gives us the opportunity to make a gold mine from every situation we find ourselves in.

Without the fear of the Lord, we make final decisions based on our faulty human understanding (Proverbs 3:56). When we incorporate the fear of the Lord into every moment of our lives, we make decisions based upon His approval. We live with the knowledge that the Creator of the universe is intimately involved in every step we take. It’s sad that because of a lack of wisdom and understanding of God, a lot of elders who are also lacking in the wisdom of God have unconsciously perverted and mis-directed the lives of the young ones around them when their advice was sought. True, they are professors in the vagaries of life because of their length of existence and experience on earth but a lot of them took the wrong path and fell flat on their faces.

No wonder the scripture says “With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.” However, it goes on and says “With him (God) is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.” That is God has wisdom and power to guide us towards the path of the beautiful life He has destined for us. The experienced in life mean well but a lot of times have a crass way of dealing with issues and could convince you to pamper pain and any wrong counsel may be fatal to your destiny. You never know why you are going through this phase now, so please be careful! This is why it’s very important to surrender our lives to the one who knew us before we were formed in our mother’s womb and the author and the finisher of our faith and learn to be alone with him.

The human life and each individual’s existence on earth is far too complex for anyone to determine why certain things happen to us and how it should go. Even the greatest prophets have limited revelatory knowledge. You will be bombarded with all sorts of analysis- constructive, true, false, logical, irrelevant etc. Also, you could end up being blamed for what was destined to happen for your own good. And what could be more confusing than looking for a way out of the quagmire you find yourself in and then being held responsible for it? It confuses and slows down the faint-hearted such that one falls out of the path of one’s destiny. No matter what you are slammed with right now, I mean even if you are a total disgrace to your family today, with the fear of God, you can be catapulted to heights that the greatest person in your family could never reach and have your country’s flag hoisted for you in another country. Whoa! Remember me o! Congratulations in advance!

    Pursue your destiny (III)

WOW! Madam Temilolu, you stand out and just in a jiffy you’ve become my role model as I am an aspiring barrister, hoping to defend the defenceless in the nearest future and a writer. I am a wife and mother and I read your column in the Nation on Sunday. It would be nice to have you as a sister. Thanks.

    Amina Jibril Dukugi, Kaduna

Thank you woman of God. It’s a great work you are doing for the Lord. We must stop the devil from preying upon the destinies of our youth. I am standing with you in prayer and I know that God will take the glory ultimately. Remain blessed.

    Pst. Stephen A., P/H

    Dear Temilolu,

I never knew you are single and gifted as such. Keep it up please!

    Dear Nigerians,

I hope you all had a great week? I must not fail to thank you for your text messages, a few of which are published. And I must emphasise that we are all gifted as God has invested one unique gift or the other in us to affect other lives positively. We just need to discover our purpose in life and like I’ve been discussing this topic in the last two weeks, today we’ll be going into a series on how we can pursue our original destinies and get them to manifest. I welcome you to school on Sunday and remain a sister to all Nigerians!

    SEPARATE YOURSELF

As the world daily advances, you will agree with me that most of our thoughts, behaviour, attitude to God and life generally is more often than not influenced by people around us even when it is obviously wrong. And according to the Yorubas- “aiye nse ‘ru e.” That means the world does same. Even clerics who know what the scriptures say about what God expects from us and are meant to ensure we strictly follow the rules encourage people to go against the rules. We hear people saying it’s not possible to live a holy life. Who says? It is very possible if you are determined. God cannot give rules we can’t abide by. All we need is some determination and a consecration of our lives. If you want your original to manifest, the first thing you must learn to do is to decide that in spite of any combination of adverse circumstances and the pollution of the world, your glory must shine. You must always bear in mind that we have a common enemy whose only mission on earth is to “kill, steal and destroy” us, our dreams and every good thing God has planned for our lives. However, isn’t it so nice that the scriptures say he roams round the world looking for whom to devour. What this means is that he knows he can’t destroy everyone and that there are some untouchables. Who says you can’t become an untouchable – the apple of God’s eye? It’s up to you. If you’ve been making the devil happy by flouting God’s rules, your life is automatically his play ground and he would find it too easy to becloud your senses and divert you from your path of glory.

Hence, the first step to discovering yourself is separating yourself from the world. However, this doesn’t mean you should be in solitary confinement or snob people around you. Well, I must add that you are permitted to run away from people you know would always get you in trouble with God. The scriptures say: “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” I Cor.15:33. When you continue hanging around friends who sleep with their boyfriends, talk dirty, wear seductive clothes, form all sorts of lies to acquire money from their parents etc. you will definitely be influenced. Bad company corrupts good morals, period! And besides, show me your friend and I’ll tell you who you are!

Also, you must note that there are those who would influence you to do things that will keep you in the firm grip of the devil, there are some whose mindset would keep you in the valley of life because they don’t think great and can’t imagine you shinning and will always discourage you even when they mean no harm while there are some who are the devil’s tools, who have seen your potential and have the power to destroy it! I want you to look back at your life in the last 10 years and your friends/associates and those you are closely related to. In what way did they influence your life? Positive or negative? Are you happy you ever met them? What did they contribute to your life? Did they lift you high or pull you down? Even when you thought you were chopping life, have they added to your success? You need to analyse this and decide what you want to make out of life. Time is running fast and what will make you shine in your youth may never make you shine in your middle age and that is if it is ever discovered. Do you know the more we grow, the lesser the energy we have to pursue our dreams? Besides, when we start taking care of our husbands, children, coping with in-laws etc. we want to give them our maximum concentration. Even if they will be appreciative, their wife and mum are special breed and a shining star they are mightily proud of and who they love to discuss with their friends (who also can’t stop talking about her intelligence and prowess) and not just one of the people out there. So, ladies, please you need to get your priorities right, fast, fast, fast!

Encounter with Destiny from His Book! (3)

In our discourse of Encounter with Destiny from His Book last week, we described every true child of God as a redeemed Spiritual Eagle. We identified the general features of the Eagle and attempted to relate the bird to the redeemed Christian, who is a Spiritual Eagle.

Today, we shall continue that discussion by situating the subject in the significance of the Bible, which is God’s special dream Book for our encounter with destiny. Let us understand however, that the Bible is a Book of instructions and our life cannot be worth any more than we are addicted to those instructions.

In fact, our ultimate proofs are engendered by instructions and that’s why those who hate instructions cannot go far with God. Therefore, sensitivity and commitment to His leadings is vital to our making (2 Timothy 3:16, Proverbs 4:13, Isaiah 48:21).

From the story of the eagle, the mother eagle goes outside her nest, bears the eaglet on her back, and soars to the skies. In the midst of the flight, the mother eagle suddenly removes her back, while the eaglet struggles for survival. When the eaglet is about crashing into the sea or on the rock, the mother eagle comes and bears him.

There are too many believers who have remained eaglets all their lives, because they won’t get out of the ‘nest’ and take responsibility. Though there is an eagle in us, it takes discipline, focused spiritual exercises, being led by the Spirit among others, for the eagle in us to come alive.

Our second picture from scriptures is that every child of God is redeemed a ‘Sun’ of Righteousness: We understand from scriptures that Jesus is the Sun of righteousness and as the Father has sent Him, so Has He sent us. It therefore means that we are redeemed as ‘suns’ of righteousness. However, we must understand that though redemption has made us a sun, it is revelation that helps us to see and actualise it (Malachi 4:1-2, Psalm 84:11, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Isaiah 60).

But, what is the Sun worth?

•Scientifically, the sun is an entity of global phenomenon: The sun is worth all that engenders life on the earth. For instance, plants are absolutely dependent on sunlight; otherwise they will die. We also know that animals are absolutely dependent on plants, because they, including humans, survive by the oxygen that plants supply. Therefore, the sun is the fountain of life!

Likewise, every child of God is redeemed a global phenomenon and a fountain of life (Matthew 5:13-16)

•There is enormous heat in the sun: Naturally, no chaff can survive the heat of the sun and we understand that whatever is not planted by God in our lives is chaff. Thus, when the sun in us comes fully alive, nothing can survive except what is planted by God (Matthew 3:11-12).

In scriptures, Jesus, the Sun of righteousness, is described as the burning and shining light. When He appeared, the demons couldn’t stand His presence and they cried out, “Have You come to destroy us before the time?” (John 5:35, Matthew 8:29). Likewise, redemption has made us ‘suns’ of righteousness and the overriding Sun (Jesus) dwells in us.

    How is this heat generated?

The Holy Ghost is the fire from heaven, the Word is the wood and inside that wood is also fire. When the fire within the wood and the fire of the Holy Ghost come together, then we generate the heat of the sun. Also, we understand from scriptures that where there is no wood, the fire goes out. We generate and maintain the heat of the sun by our encounters with the heated Word of God(Jeremiah 20:9, Proverbs 26:20).

We must understand that every one of God’s agenda requires a price to be paid. It is not enough to access God’s plan, we must know what it takes to actualize it and commit to press our way into it. The truth remains that the Bible is the custodian of every great destiny in the Kingdom. I pray today that no one will take your place in God’s agenda for your life! Remain ever Blessed!

Friend, the grace to encounter destiny through His Book is free for those who are born again. You become a child of God, by confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. Say this prayer in faith: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You, for saving me! Now, I know I am born again!”

I invite you to come and fellowship with us at the Faith Tabernacle, Canaan Land, Ota, the covenant home of Winners. We have four services on Sundays, holding at 6:00 a.m., 7:50 a.m., 9:40 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. respectively.

  • Encounter with Destiny from His Book! (2)

Welcome to your regular column. Last week, I started this teaching series by identifying the first picture of what we are from scriptures. I said we are first and foremost, as children of God, redeemed as Spiritual Eagle. Let us now examine the features of an eagle and sync it with the Spiritual Eagle, which is what we are His children.

What does it take to manifest as an eagle?

Based on the characteristics of eagles, let’s look at how to manifest our Eagle root.

“The eagle has a unique strength developed through rigorous exercises: Through the unusual strength of the eagle, it has the ability to pick up any prey three times its weight. Concerning us as spiritual eagles, the Bible says that those who do know their God shall be strong and they shall do exploits. But, where is this strength coming from? According to scriptures, A wise man is strong, ye a man of knowledge increaseth strength (Proverbs 24:5). (See also Daniel 11:32).

This means that we build strength by knowledge (insight and revelation). We don’t manifest as eagles by wishing, but by aligning with the rigorous exercises of searching the Word and other anointed materials, in order to build strength against the day of adversity. Therefore, the more insight we encounter from the Word, the more strength we gather to defeat our adversaries (Proverbs 24:10).

“The eagle is a highly disciplined bird: Once every year, the eagle goes to the mountain and settles down for forty days to shed its old feathers and grow new ones in preparation for the next year’s flight.

Concerning us as spiritual eagles, the Bible says: But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint (Isaiah 40:31).

When the ‘Eagle Moses’ came, he waited on the mountain 40 days three times. Jesus came after the order of Moses the eagle and He also waited 40 days. We are coming after Jesus’ order and He said, “As My Father has sent Me, even so send I you.” Therefore, as spiritual eagles, we must be willing to pay the price of rigorous exercises (fasting), for the eagle in us to come alive (1 Timothy 4:8).

“The eagle is a highly visionary bird: Eagles see beyond the moment. We are told that an eagle can sight any threat to her eggs in the nest five miles away. Similarly, it was said about David that he being a prophet knew afar off. To be far-sighted as spiritual eagles, we must engage in untiring exploration in the Word (Deuteronomy 32:10/12, Acts 2:30).

“The eagle is explorative: I remember going to the mountain and asking the Lord to show me the secret behind the book of Ezekiel. I also remember engaging in a long fast to access the secret behind the Acts of the Apostles.

As spiritual eagles therefore, we must not just study the Word, but explore the treasures hidden therein, which determines our placement in destiny (Deuteronomy 32:13).

“Its flight is guided by the direction of the wind: The eagle waits on the mountaintop to study the direction of the wind before embarking on its flight. As the wind blows, it spreads its wings and flies to its destination. As a result, the eagle is free from struggles by following the direction of the wind.

We understand from scriptures that the wind is the Holy Spirit and every child of God is entitled to the leading of the Holy Spirit; for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God (Romans 8:14, John 10:27, Revelation 1:10, 1 Corinthians 2:14).

Every eagle-believer must therefore, be one that is led by the Lord, because in the midst of the desert, by His leading, we continually experience a gushing. (See Isaiah 48:21, Deuteronomy 32:10, 12/Deuteronomy 18:15; Numbers 11:14, Exodus 19:4, Acts 3:21-22, John 5:30).

I shall continue this teaching next week.

Friend, the grace to encounter destiny through His Book is freely available to the redeemed. You become a child of God, by confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. You can be God’s child now, by saying this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You, for saving me! Now, I know I am born again!”

  • Encounter with Destiny from His Book!

Encounter with Destiny from His Book!

Welcome to October, your month of total recovery and the season of new beginnings. God will visit you in a special way this month and you shall not miss any of His blessings, in Jesus’ Name!

This week, I shall be teaching you on how you can encounter destiny from God’s Holy Book, the Bible! Let us please understand that the Bible is a Book of visions for the redeemed and every encounter with the Word is an encounter with destiny. We also understand from scriptures that redemption entitles us to a glorious destiny and we are predestinated according to God’s purpose to obtain an inheritance. As it is written:

In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will (Ephesians 1:11; see also Romans 8:29-30).

Furthermore, every great testimony in the Kingdom is traceable to encounters with the Word. For instance, Abraham encountered the Word of the Lord, which made him the father of many nations and a symbol of trans-generational blessings. Jacob also encountered the Word of the Lord, which turned him to a nation (Romans 4:18-21, 22:1-18, Isaiah 9:8).

Remember, God’s Word is the spiritual mirror that shows us God’s picture for our lives?who we are in Christ, what we carry, what we can do and how to do them (James 1:22-25).

Let’s examine two pictures of who we are from scriptures:

•Every child of God is redeemed a Spiritual Eagle: From scriptures, we have a picture of the Father God as an eagle. We also understand that we have been redeemed as sons of God and by the law of procreation, like begets like. If we are His children and we have an Eagle Father, then we are redeemed as eagles after the order of our Father.

This connotes that we are redeemed to soar where others struggle; that is, ride in the high places of the earth, scale strange heights and enviable altitudes (Deuteronomy 32:9-13, John 1:12).

However, we must see ourselves as spiritual eagles, before we can become one. God said to Abraham, “Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed forever.” We also understand from scriptures that we are seeds of Abraham. Therefore, there is a demand on us, as seeds of Abraham, to see it before God can deliver it (Genesis 13:14-15, Galatians 3:29).

For instance, in July 1977, I came across a devotional written by Oral Roberts, where I saw my picture as a spiritual eagle. From that moment, I refused to settle for anything less than high places. It is important for us to understand that whatever we cannot see, it is not permitted to be delivered. If we see ourselves as eagles and we are willing to align with the responsibilities, then we have committed God’s integrity to cause the eagle in us to be made manifest. However, although we have been redeemed as eagles and ordained to soar, it comes with a cost.

I will continue with this teaching next week. The Exceeding Grace of God will culminate in His Strange Acts in your life this season.

Friend, the grace and privilege to encounter destiny through His Book are available, but to the redeemed. Are you a born again? You become a child of God, by confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. You can be God’s child now, if you haven’t been, by saying this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You, for saving me! Now, I know I am born again!”

  • Imoke’s wife lifts Destiny Children

    Imoke’s wife lifts Destiny Children

My name is Abigail and I play the violin. I have no one to look after me; so, I roam the streets of Cross River. Perhaps someone out there will help me. If they don’t, my destiny will be cut short, my talents wasted and I may never get to play the violin.”

But, for the intervention of Obioma Liyel-Imoke, wife of the state governor, Abigail and over 100 street children in Cross River would have had no future.

October 11 2009 marked a transition, an exodus of at least 54 despondent street children, in Calabar, the state’s capital, to a much more comfortable environment where they would finally fulfill their purpose in life. Their name was changed from Street Children to Destiny Children.

But, it did not stop there. That same year, a fashion show was organised, by Obioma, whose name means, “Heart of Gold.” The fashion show tagged The Destiny Child Charity (DCC) Fashion show, which combines the best of music, culture, talent and fashion serves as a fundraiser for the upkeep of the Destiny Children. Here the children paraded alongside professional models and artistes. The Destiny Child initiative was taken to Atlanta, United States where Mrs Liyel-Imoke was the special guest of honour.

“We key into this vision,” says Geoffrey Teneilabe, Nigeria’s Consul General to Atlanta. “What Obioma Liyel-Imoke is doing is innovative; she’s taking the rejected and downtrodden in our society and giving them life again. This is the first of its kind in Nigeria. We will encourage her every step of the way, and the Good Lord will give her the strength. We also pray for the means to sustain this laudable project.”

“Our special guest has tirelessly served women and children in her community over the years. She is ably represented here this evening hoping to mobilise others to rise to the challenge of helping in our individual communities and communities worldwide,” said Norma Jean Martin, Founder, A Fashion Affair Inc, organisers of this landmark event.

The wife of the governor, represented by the Commissioner for Social Welfare and Community Development, Patricia Endeley, gave insights into the child abandonment situation in Cross River State and in Nigeria.

“Child abuse is not only on the rise but gradually assuming epidemic proportions. It has also been described by experts in the field as a hidden epidemic because most cases are largely unaccounted for.”

“In Cross River State, two peculiar dimensions that are linked with a high incidence of child abuse are unwanted adolescent/teenage pregnancies and the child-witch phenomenon (a.k.a. the child-witch syndrome).”

Though giant strides have been taken to alleviate this menace, Obioma acknowledges that the obstacles are huge. “We all will agree that running a charity organisation and projects of this magnitude are not devoid of challenges. Some include highly capital intensive and specialised nature of the residential care services for the DCC housemates; few skills options given to the beneficiaries of DCC due to inadequate funding; inability to purchase equipments/tools for DCC housemates trained on vocational skills to begin their small businesses and thus reduce level of poverty in their families; inadequate/lack of information about families of some DCC kids to enable family integration for existing housemates.”

The DCC initiative is also garnering momentum with other stakeholders in the State of Georgia. Abby Ebodaghe, President of the Nigerian Women’s Association of Georgia (NWAG), at an event, said: “We’ve been in existence since April 2000. Our purpose is to empower women, youth and children in Atlanta and in Nigeria. We support 10 orphanages in 10 states in Nigeria including the FCT, and hope to extend this to two more, which may include the DCC.”

The event tagged Afro Caribbean Splendour, which held recently at the prestigious Holiday Inn Dunwoody Atlanta, could be best described as a combination of the finest of Nigerian and Caribbean talent. It featured internationally acclaimed professional models as well as celebrities such as musician and songwriter Kenny Gilkes, jazz artist Andrew Lawrence, Adaeze Eluke, Carnival Calabar Queen 2010 and the current Carnival Calabar Queen Nancy-Olive Aisaghonhi.

“We have faith that because MACA’s steps have been ordered to meet the right people here, we will collectively mitigate these challenges with your support, said the Wife of the Governor.”

“I am proud to be associated with this event, I remain forever grateful to A Fashion Affair for taking our campaign to the next level and look forward to forging stronger links ahead,” she added.

  • Their destiny in their hands

    Their destiny in their hands

Lagging behind the other ethnic groups in Ogun State in virtually all areas of human development, the people of Yewa have decided to literally take their destiny in their hands by identifying their problems and proffering solutions to them. ERNEST NWOKOLO reports

he Yewa, an ethnic group which constitutes the Ogun West Senatorial district of the Gateway State, is on the march to self re-awakening.

Strategically located on the western part of Ogun State, with a good number of their communities sharing boundaries with the Republic of Benin, the people, though share a rich history with the other ethnic nationalities, seems to be lagging behind the rest.

Though the first international border and sea port started in Ijofin in Yewaland where the British hoisted its flag in 1914 and also hosts the maiden station of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the area could best be described as forgotten when compared with the rest of the state.

From the era of western region to the present day in Ogun State, the people and the area generally trail behind their counterparts in the state, the Egbas (Ogun Central) or the Ijebu/Remo (Ogun East) on most indices of growth and development.

And nowhere is this more sharply observed than in the lives of their youths, the expected future leaders of Yewaland and beyond, who are neither prepared nor equipped enough to fit into that role tomorrow.

The strategic location of Yewaland which ought to confer special advantage on its over 1.4million population, appears to be doing the opposite, particularly, to some of her youth.

Since the area geographically shared borders with the Republic of Benin, smuggling, though illegal, is a thriving trade among the younger generation.

It is not uncommon to see an average Yewa youth pointing at or naming a ‘successful’ smuggler as his or her role model, with the younger ones spoiling to become successful smugglers.

Today, smuggling among the people has morphed from being a booming trade to a way of life, with the attendant frequent deadly confrontations with operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service, whenever the latter tried to check their smuggling activities.

But last week the indigenes held a Building Opportunity for Tomorrow (BOT) Partnership Summit in Ilaro, the administrative Headquarters of Yewa South Local Government Council, to chart a path towards repositioning the area and her people.

Traditional rulers, youths, women, students and artisans in their thousands were in attendance. The speakers were equally Yewa sons and daughters who are experienced professionals.

The speakers, which include the Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Rahman Bello and immediate past Chairman, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Ogun State chapter, Mr Femi Dokunmu, after taking a cursory look at the history of the area identified the widespread youth unemployment, increasing aged population requiring care and women under-employment among others which governments policies – state and federal, have done little to address.

They admitted that the unemployment situation among their youth may pose a grave risk to the society in future if left unattended to now.

As a way forward, they agreed that there should be a continuous entrepreneurial training for the people, sensitisation of youths on jobs creation and urgent tackling of the palpable “infrastructural deficit” in Yewaland.

And having also realised the place of political power in the scheme of things and how the inability of  Yewaland to produce a governor since the creation of Ogun State, in 1976,  contributed in part to the stunted growth of the area, they advised all to give support to sons and daughters of Yewa that are vying for elective offices or seeking government’s appointments.

According to Mr Biyi Ote-gbeye, youth empowerment would be a panacea to  joblessness of the people. Otegbeye, a Yewa son from Ilaro, founder and Chief Executive Officer(CEO), Regency Insurance Company Limited, said youth empowerment is imperative because of the warped orientation of a good number of the young ones, and who needed to be pulled out today from lifestyles that could lead to dependency in future.

He said:  “I think this is the troubling aspect of the vision because geographically our area borders Republic of Benin, so smuggling is a striving trade among the people here. And it has now transcended from being a trade to being a way of life. And you now see the younger folks aspiring to be successful smugglers.

“And we know that if the orientation becomes so warped, then there is a problem; a problem, not just for today but for tomorrow. I think the Boko Haram we are talking about today is not today’s problem, it is an accumulation of some problems that were not addressed then and now have become so endemic.

“There is the need to improve the ability of Yewa boy/girl, to engage them in jobs creation.  We need to partner with people to do this and certainly not government because governments have their hands full already.”

Also, Dokunmu, a public relations expert, made the case for the building of a solid foundation as well as having shared goals, vision and clear – cut objectives among Yewa sons and daughters if the desire to improve the socio – economic development of the area is to be realised.

Dokunmu said: “We must lay a good foundation today. We must have shared goals and vision regarding where we are, where we are going and how to get there. There is the need to set our objectives right so that the socio-economic development of our people can be achieved.”

A youth participant who identified herself as Miss Yinka Doyin, told The Nation that the summit was not only an “eye opener to challenges the people have been facing over the years but also came with a wakeup call on everybody to adopt right attitude that would get us out of backwardness at the individual and collective.”

She lauded BOT, a non-governmental initiative, for providing the lead and platform for the empowerment and liberation of the area economically.

Aside the talking, rice and other food items were distributed to tens of people particularly the retirees, aged and women while eight pupils of St. Paul’s Primary School, Owode-Yewa were given scholarship by BOT.

Earlier, BOT had carried out eye screening and prescription of medicated glasses across Yewaland with 6,200 persons benefitting from the exercise, youth empowerment training programme for 175 beneficiaries and also life after service training for 90 retirees.

The initiator of BOT and convener of the summit, Biyi Otegbeye, said his encounter with the plights of people within and outside Yewaland compelled him to formulate BOT as an intervention strategy for tackling myriads of socio-economic challenges his people contend with.

He said: “BOT is an initiative that I put together about 18 months ago and I will tell you two stories that really touched me and propelled me to putting this initiative together.

The first one was a visit to Ayetoro, because I finished from Comprehensive High School, Ayetoro for my secondary education and about two years ago I visited someone there.

“We ran into one of our former teachers, somebody who taught me Agriculture Science in Form 3. I was surprised he was still alive but he was looking rather shabby and in a very sorry state. It touched me because he was a good teacher to all of us.

“We respected him so much and he was supposed to be well-acclaimed at that time by other schools. Finding him in a very helpless situation, not because of extreme old age or any incapacity but rather because the society had been rather unkind to him and there was nobody to help, it touched me. I could only offer some few words of consolation and gave a paltry amount which certainly was never intended to do much but just a way of appreciating him at that moment. It got me thinking.

“The second story, I stumbled on a government appointment. I didn’t pick it on the street but I guessed Mr. President saw some value in me and he chose me to be the Chairman of the board of the University Teaching Hospital, Uyo. Being a private sector person, it was a new experience and on my first visit, we visited the traditional rulers and important places and then we came back to the hospital.

“And then we decided to visit the wards, I shed tears. I saw about 900 patients waiting to consult six doctors on that particular day. The Accident and Emergency section was particularly appalling and these are human beings. I asked the CMD if it had always been like that and he said it has improved. So apparently, what I witnessed was supposed to be an improvement of the situation.

“For somebody like me who had travelled so widely and I knew what value of life should be, it touched me. And what that did to me was to make me think inwardly and I felt selfish.

“So, I came back and went to see what the situation is like in Ilaro, my hometown, it was a sorry tale. Beds without mattresses and then you see wasp in the wards. I offered some advice.

“It is not a government thing but the essential thing is that as individual that is privileged, I can do something and I can also mobilise people that fortune had smiled on so that collectively we can do something together.

“That is why I am in the business of BOT. I felt I could offer my resources, I felt I could also mobilise people who are my friends and contacts to donate money, treasures, time, and talents to worthy causes to help people.”

  • Your mentality and your destiny

    Your mentality and your destiny

YOUR mentality is your characteristic way of thinking, your frame of mind, your mindset. It could be developed right from childhood and it could also develop later in life as a result of your circumstances. Where you see yourself today, determines where you’ll find yourself tomorrow. Your mentality is what defines your destiny. The pig is in the mud because that is where its mind is, so is the eagle in the sky. A lot of people are born into scarcity and lack and because of this, they subconsciously limit themselves by wallowing in the pitiful state of their circumstance and embrace impossibility. What you embrace sticks with you. It’s sad that people around them only make things worse because they have the same mindset and find it very hard to see above their circumstances. As far as I am concerned, a lot of people who wanted to be educated but could not be are responsible for their inability. After all, there are millions of people who were in worse situations but were much too engrossed in pursuing their dreams than be submerged in their unfortunate circumstances. This is Africa where a lot of us believe in the enemy impeding our progress but I tell you, we all are 75% responsible for what happens to us, what we become or achieve in life. In fact, I dare say the worse your situation, the higher your chances of having the life of your dreams and your greatest wishes come true.

The pain you feel when you lack the resources to fuel your dream naturally creates a gnawing pain and this pain should only make your desire stronger by the day and not weaken you and make you back out. As your desire grows, your soul sees it more, it becomes a part of you and with the intensity of the fire burning in your heart, and your mind attracts it. And it just comes your way. True, life is not a bed of roses and is not ready to give us what we want but it also recognizes perseverance, determination and resilience which all come with some hard work and rewards these. Also, life has given us a very powerful tool which knows no bounds or circumstance, it could go any distance you send it, farther than you can ever imagine and deliver wonders to you; that tool is your mind. As defined above, the state of your mind is what makes up your mentality. Your mentality especially from a young age when you should have a vivid imagination imprints on your soul and once it registers, it carries you through life. I am sure that you also have a certain mentality that may be slowing down an aspect of your life, but as usual, I’ll be concentrating on the female folk.

It’s appaling that in today’s society, a regular girl, whether silver-spoon or less-privileged or in-between, has this mentality that the female folk have to “give out their bodies” to men to achieve anything that is worthwhile. Did I say today’s society? Well, I remember about13 years ago, when an epoch-making and the most colorful Nigerian magazine which transcends our borders interviewed me on my book thereby presenting me to the world, to my dismay, a friend told me everyone believes the publisher must have been my boy-friend. What shocked me was their level of thinking and cheap mentality and not even the assertion because they all knew my late dad could afford to get me anything I wanted but that just came my way-even without asking and without being loose. And in fact, I had to take permission from my dad before granting the interview because he shunned publicity. Life saw my hard work and felt I needed to be rewarded with some damn good publicity which worked wonders-simple!

That was 13 years ago. Now can you imagine the latest mindset of girls, ladies, women? Most young ladies don’t think they can get anything on merit, no thanks to some lecherous university lecturers and randy bosses who also complain that ladies throw themselves at them and so they feel every female practice same-married or unmarried; even grandmas. Many don’t even think they can enjoy the good things of life or amount to anything without having an “uncle” or “god-father” they’ll be sleeping with. It is a very ridiculous, despicable and unfortunate mentality which mothers are passing down to their daughters, which have been allowed to linger and eat deep into the fabric of the society. How can you possess virtues that can make you rule the world, be a super-star, and then debase yourself by not even knowing your capabilities and harnessing them?

    •To be concluded next week.

  • ‘Your destiny lies in your hands’

An epidemiologist and founder of Holistic Lifecare International, Prof Dayo Oyekole, answers the question on esoteric lifecare atonement.

The Esoteric Lifecare Atonement (ELA) involves the use of divine power and spiritual forces for the redemption and total emancipation of mankind from diabolic forces of nature. It is certainly an unpardonable piece of intellectual dishonesty to deny the existence of black arts like juju, witchcraft, incantations, invocations, charms, and some other supernatural powers.

This message of the Esoteric Lifecare Atonement (ELA) comes to you neither by accident nor by your own conscious request. It is without dogmas, ideologies or theories and therefore, it does not seek to convert you to any creed or belief. It is a turn in the wheel of your destiny which brings it into your hands.

To start with, have you ever asked yourself whether there is more to the universe, than physical reality as we know it – whether we are alone in the universe, or are there others on physical as well as non-physical levels; whence do we come, why are we here and whither are we going?

Honestly, we have no idea why the world was created. It was certainly created by a mind of inconceivable vast scope; the creative mind which for want of a better title, we call God; but why and for what purpose we can only surmise. We can say however, that inborn in all of us there is something which urges us on to strive for what we regard as an improvement in our present conditions, or in a limited number of cases, an improvement in the human lot generally.

As to what constitutes ‘improvement’ we have widely different ideas but broadly, it would seem that it is sought along two apparently incompatible roads- the material and the spiritual. The clear-cut separation of these roads is a comparatively modern phenomenon, for at one time, both were regarded as more or less the province of some philosophical and theosophical schools. As might be expected, the separating of the roads has led to tremendous imbalance.

The world has had enough saviours. What are needed for the new age are individuals who willingly embrace the burdens of individuality, without losing sight of collective responsibility. We will never achieve our true potential or prosperity until we can be critically self-governing from our own inner source. Honesty and fearlessness in the search after truth are the major pre-requisites for finding it. Without these, no spirit soars. With these, none fail of progress.

Millions of us, be it Christians, Muslims or traditional worshippers, young or old, educated or illiterate, male or female, all possess charms in the pocket, around the waist, neck or finger, in the farthest corner of the boxes, on the ceiling or walls, buried around the house, under the bed or carefully razored into the skin. No wonder then why those who do not even believe in these forces, still have a morbid fear of them and that is why in their dreams and daily activities, they continue to be haunted by the machinations of the black arts. This is why you find so many so-called religious leaders still consulting the medicine men, for prosperity and protections. Can any sane person then deny the existence of the black arts?

Religious fanaticism and western education which in the name of civlisation has taught us that these things do not exist and that we should therefore neglect them, have consequently done more havoc and contributed in no small way to the existing confusion in the mind of the modern African.

If they had faced the facts and studied the actual situation, they would have realised that the black powers do not only exist but can also affect both the good and bad with equal force. For snobbish reasons, many of us refused to accept the truth and the result has been the perpetuation of ignorance, mental degradation, toiling agony, wickedness, indiscriminate brutality, mass poverty, misery and suffering wrecked by man upon man.

The only solution to the myriads of problems is to go back to our root through authentic and holistic research into the “wisdom of the ages” which could be used to tackle the weakest link in the vicious cycle that has kept these diabolical and devastating black arts in equilibrium.

The Esoteric Lifecare Atonement as a means of deliverance

The holistic approach as exemplified by the divine Esoteric Lifecare Atonement (ELA) will reveal what natural powers you have; how, when and where you can unleash the powers to work for you in overcoming the evil forces without recourse to diabolic means.

Many people think they are unlucky in life and resort to dubious or diabolic means of solving problems. There is nothing like luck; a person is either blessed or cursed. It is the negative forces that inflict diseases and social ills into the lives of people; so that they will spend all their money seeking treatment and eventually it will take their lives and would have wasted away without fulfilling their divine destinies.

The evil forces sometimes manifest in the form of impatience. It makes people rush into decisions and make drastic steps that make them lose money, possessions, relatives, family and even their own lives. While economies may nose-dive through human errors of mismanagement and corruption or unavoidable global economic recessions, such omissions or commissions should not be an excuse for protracted failures in life. For a period in the life of an achiever, there is bound to be a crucible of tests and trials that bring some odd results for hard labour. You must not despair, even as colleagues and neighbours make disparaging comments about you. Whatever hardship you are passing through is to refine in you a stronger personality to manage a success bigger than your present frame of mind can cope with. Sometimes, the delays in your life today are allowed by God to remove evil and sorrow from your tomorrow.

Your destiny is in your own hands. Whatever may be your pursuit in life; business, politics, love, marriage, getting a child, examinations, promotions, protection, health, money, beauty, slimming, education etc., and whatever may be your age, sex, religion or belief, you can now command success in any field of your choice.
