  • State police: Between the devil and deep blue sea

With nationwide debates on vital issues affecting our country, it seems Nigeria has arrived at a stage where most of the people can now decide the fate of our country. National discourse on vital issues is not new to Nigerians, but recent events show that our country, for good or for ill, now wants to indicate the direction which we should go.

One of the latest issues on our plate is the need to fully operate a federal system of government which will devolve responsibilities among the components of the federation. It is now generally believed that the centre is loaded with too many responsibilities some of which it cannot carry and which should be shared among the components of the union. The current attractive subject is the need to create state police to enable the country achieve a higher level of security and surveillance.

The arguments for state police are very strong. One is that much of the personnel constituting state police must be indigenous to the environment. The personnel are expected mostly to be indigenes of the state who know and appreciate the needs, complexities and ethnic configuration of the state. It is also believed that Abuja is too far away as police command headquarters to be able to effectively move its personnel around especially in times of emergency. Proponents of state police also refer to other countries especially in Europe and the Americas where police force is structured into three – national, state and municipal. Nowhere, people say is a central police system in operation. Finally supporters of state police refer to the distinct if not mutually exclusive ethnic configuration of the Nigerian nation as to make a central police system inoperative, oppressive, inconvenient and inefficient. All the above postulates are right.

But let us look back a bit and recall what happened in our remote past when there were more or less three tiers of policing in Nigeria especially in the northern and western regions of our country. The east was saved from the destructive and confusing effect of national, state and municipal police system. In the west, there were problems of politicians at regional and municipal levels confronting each other, interpreting differently the roles to be played by these security outfits and generally engendering disorder and confusion which they were set up to avoid in the first place. Some of us can remember concepts like ‘Akintola Police’, ‘Balewa Police’, ‘Shagari Police’ etc. These were derogative terms meant to downplay the usefulness and impartiality of these security bodies.

Now let us examine the present Nigeria and its tempestuous, self-serving and sometimes irrational politicians who are at the head of various political and governmental institutions. To put it straight, Nigerians are not having the best political operators today. Much of our governmental activities at federal and state levels are geared towards self-aggrandizement, glorification and self-propelled esteem. Many things happening in recent times illustrate vividly the negative effect to which politicians in power can deploy a security outfit. Some few examples. Security operatives accompanying big men especially ministers and governors in an attempt to clear the road for their paymasters usually cause havoc by creating confusion on the road or outright demobilizing or killing hapless citizens who did not do their bidding as quickly as they wanted; some innocents citizens have lost their lives when police men think they are serving their masters by pushing vehicles and humans off the road.

Overzealous security men watching the offices or homes of big men occasionally assault innocent people whose only offence is that they move near the big man’s house. More recently a section of this country has been battling with a state governor who ordered his men including security police to pull down buildings and structures belonging to political opponents. One can imagine what would happen in a restructured security outfit where the governor has his own police force over which he assumes supreme command. He could order political opponents to be slaughtered at will, quoting relevant portions of state law.

The above black situation notwithstanding, Nigeria as it is now is too large, too ethnic-conscious, too unwieldy and perhaps too different one from the other in culture, orientation and civic approach to life to accommodate a single policing system. It is therefore a problem of choosing between the devil and the blue sea. Both can result into death. But doesn’t the man who prefers plunging into the blue sea to instant death by the devil have a chance, however slim of accidental safety? This may sound pedantic but it can also be real. Some have said that decentralizing police outfit may aid disintegration of the federation. It is doubtful whether any state or regional police may be strong enough to support or ignite each unit of the federation going its own way. Several states, municipalities and organizations have established their own local security outfit variously called vigilante, neighbourhood guards etc. These bodies are meant to serve as State or Local Police, but without enforcement power.

With the pros and cons and contradictions steering us in the face, many think that policing Nigeria will not remain what it is for too long. Parliaments all over the world are usually hesitant to make fundamental changes that will reorder societies. This is particularly so on issues concerning security. Nigerian politicians know their onions. Many of them know how they got to the National Assembly and they would be hesitant to make fundamental changes in the constitution that might affect their hold to power especially at local level. Many of our men and women at the National Assembly know that they are not there by merit but by one subterfuge or the other. Some rely on godfathers at national level hence they can confront local demi-gods. These are not the people who would put the interest of the nation above personal survival. But it appears time is running out in Nigeria. The nation may have to decide sooner than later whether to operate a true federal system of government or to continue our present “patch-patch work”.

  • Pre-marital sex gives the devil an upper hand over your life!

DEAR Aunty Temilolu, Although I’m a man, your articles have done wonders in my life. Thanks for your wonderful ministrations. May the lord catapult you to the next level.

    Adeboye Abayomi

    Dear Aunty Temilolu,

Thanks for all the advice you give on Facebook and newspaper. It’s been an awesome journey so far and it has impacted my life positively till this moment and I pray your knowledge will not diminish in Jesus name. May you continue to soar in His mercy. I really appreciate you ma.

    Adijat Azeez, (Ibadan)

My darling, precious, glorious, dignified, world-famous and heavenly celebrated Nigerian sisters,

Girls…girls…girls…I’m writing you crestfallen, after reading a message from a 15-year-old girl who is pregnant and wants to commit abortion. When I tell you not to have a boyfriend in your teens, I always appear too hard and old school right? Now, check out this situation which a lot of you find yourself from time to time! The course of this young lady’s life has just been diverted, in fact taken over by the devil-stupid, bad devil! Her life can never be the same again and would only take God’s mercy to realign her with His original agenda for her life but before then she will face so much fire! Awww….What a pity! I keep telling you over and over again that when you have a boyfriend in your teens, you lose all sense of proportion and your emotions just rule your intellect/sense of reasoning and you carry on with a relationship that rocks your entire existence-not even in this age where sex has been made compulsory for foolish teens. Any teenager who is spirit-filled would never get involved in a romantic relationship. She would be too lost in her studies while planning for her future and spending her spare time in the house of God not drowning in Zeeworld and some reality show on TV where immorality is paraded!

Now let me give you an insight into how the devil can take over your life starting from when you begin a romantic relationship in your teens.

    1. When you have a boyfriend, you start basking in his love poems, his warmth, his attention and affection towards you and you would rather fantasize about him than study extra and read your bible!

2.You begin to tell lies about where you’ve been, where you’re going and who you’ve been talking to on phone etc.

3.When he realizes you’re hopelessly in love with him, he begins to toy with your feelings and before you know it, you start having sleepless nights, breaking out in pimples, crying spells, poor concentration, your grades begin to drop etc.

    1. He does all he can to engage in sex with you and resorts to emotional blackmail and because you’re too foolish and too fast, you give in to his overtures then real trouble starts!

5.Once he gets in between your thighs, he’s likely to get tired of you so soon and desire to move to another girl. But before then, you begin exposing your body and system to contraceptives, STDs, abortion and the like. To worsen` matters, you’ve already opened up your life to a boy whose destiny or destination you know nothing about. The gate of your spiritual life is already swung open to lust and demonic invasion!

    1. If he dumps you, you are spiritually weak to guard against any future occurrence of such relationship and would readily jump into the arms of the next guy. You just can’t say No and it continues like that. Just like your former, you invariably sleep and exchange spirits with his past or present sex partners and the evil baggage from multiple lives begin to draw you back, you’re already dis-integrated before life starts. Your divine identity i.e your original is diminishing before it manifests! HOW CAN YOU BOMBARD AND YOKE YOUR LIFE WITH STRANGE SPIRITS FROM MULTIPLE SEX PARTNERS AND THINK ALL WILL BE WELL WITH YOU? May the mighty hand of God set you free in Jesus name!

  • What’s your business with the devil?

    Madam Temilolu,

In this 21st century, I see in you an unusual mother of all when all mothers fail in their parental responsibilities to their children! Go on with the work of the kingdom, an icon of holiness. Your reward is in heaven. God bless you!

    Evang. Elijah (Kaduna)

    Dear Aunty Temilolu,

I have a boyfriend who I’ve had sex with a lot of times but ever since I began reading your column, I’ve made up my mind by God’s grace to stay away from pre-marital sex no matter what it will cost me. But I have a challenge, my boyfriend will be going for service this month and that means I won’t see him for a year. He will want me to visit him and if I do so, he might force me to have sex with him. How do I save this situation ma and if I decide not to see him for a whole year, won’t it affect my relationship?

    1. 22

    Dear J.

To start with I thank the Holy Spirit for breathing upon your life through this column and I pray God mercifully beams His light on you further till you are completely lost in HIM! Now, my dear, what’s your business with the devil? Yes! I mean that stupid, bad, devil who has nothing to offer you but trouble, whom God has given you dominion over to trample and have permanently under your feet! I must confess it’s so disappointing for you to even think of how your boyfriend feels or what would happen to your relationship if you refuse to sleep with him, if you continue to preserve your beautiful life and your glorious future, if you continue to move closer to your glorification! ‘! And I challenge that spirit which wants you and everyone reading to backslide with the fire of God, I command it to burn to ashes in Jesus name!

It really amazes me how a lot of people would rather place over God an ordinary human being whose existence in one’s life could make one wish one was never born! Is there anyone worth it? Is it possible for anyone to walk the path of righteousness and not be rewarded? You should be more concerned about what God thinks about you and not what any boyfriend or anyone for that matter thinks. What makes you think you even have a future with this boy and how are you so sure you’re the only one he’s been sleeping with? Or he told you he’s not touched any girl since you stopped sleeping with each other? Hmmm….girls…girls…girls, may sense fall on you! If I were you, I’d forget him! Yes! It may be hard because you love him but you have to make a choice between him and God. He’s been your partner in sin! If you’re destined to be man and wife, both of you would have to re-align with God’s divine agenda and he’ll eventually come back to you even if he’s on his way to the end of the world!

Fornication is certainly not part of God’s divine agenda and so you would both have to be cleansed by God and passed through some fire of purification if God made you for each other! For now, please let him be the least of your problems! You’re still young though this should also be a period when you should be bombarded by suitors. If you’re done with your tertiary education and you’re already thinking of settling down, I’d rather you take a closer walk with God, launch into the supernatural and get rid of the negative power of your ancestry/foundation over your life so you won’t be yoked to the wrong person in marriage! This is so important and you have the power to fight now provided you allow the power of God to saturate your life through chastity and holiness! By the time you arrive, I mean by the time God is done with you-you will be perplexed by the type of suitors that’ll bombard your life! I pray you do just as God inspired me to advise! I love you my sweeties!

  • When the devil buys a seat

On Sunday August 6, St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ozubulu community, Anambra State was the scene of an unspeakable tragedy. Just as the early morning mass was about to start the ‘Prayer of the faithful’, the service was brought to a halt by an attack from gunmen which left 12 worshippers dead and several more wounded. Since then, a number of accounts, both official and hearsay have emerged. There have also been some ‘investigations’ by people familiar with the Ozubulu community and its recent challenges. The narrative that has emerged so far is that the tragedy that took place was instigated by two citizens of Ozubulu who live outside of the country. The tale is one straight out of a Nollywood movie. It is a story about drugs, money, deadly violence, turf, betrayal and power. There is even an ‘exotic’ location thrown in – South Africa. There is a full cast of characters in the story with lead actors, supporting actors, side-kicks, directors and producers, with a Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and no end to the production in sight.

One of the many concerns about the Ozubulu tragedy is the desecration of the sanctity of a place of worship. A church is meant to be a sanctuary, a sacred place where you are safe in the hands of God. For the period of time you are there, you are meant to lay all your worldly worries at the feet of God Almighty. As you step out of the church after the service, you are expected to be full of resolve, refreshed and recommitted to doing God’s work. A church is holy ground and one of the worst things that you could do as a human being is bring blood into the house of God. The same inviolable principle applies to places of worship in other faiths. So why was a holy place drenched in blood at Ozubulu?

I believe that one of the main reasons why this happened is because the church is no longer considered a holy space, a place immune from violation and safe from desecration. A church is now seen as nothing special, no different from a social club, sporting ground, owambe party, political rally or gathering of shareholders attending an Annual General Meeting.

A lot has been said and written in Nigeria about the worrying trends in our churches and the huge gap that exists between the elites who own and run the churches, particularly the Pentecostal ones, and the majority of their congregation who are poor but still manage to subsidise the lifestyles of the church leaders. The older orthodox churches have decided to join in on the action; after all, the business of organized religion relies on a very straightforward ‘bums on seats’ strategy. More souls won equals more money to sustain the ministry and spread the word. Every business has to aim for success, whether it is faith based or secular. What is deeply troubling is the lack of caution and of discernment that has created a level operational field for all manner of scoundrels to literally take over the house of God.

It is not possible for recipients of charitable donations to screen every penny to determine the ‘cleanliness’ of its source just as the Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese stated in response to questions about the mysterious nature of the benefactors. However, in light of the recent disturbing trends happening in places of worship, some circumspection is called for in the way and manner in which donations are solicited. Ozubulu is a small community. It is the kind of place where everyone knows everyone’s business. The people there know what their children at home and abroad are up to. Even if they choose to look the other way, they know. And this includes the clergy. Edifices such as churches and cathedrals used to be built over many years, with the clergy and community toiling together to finish the project. Now it seems there is a competition to see how many rich people can build houses for God in their community.

There is also another trend with the less affluent sector of the church. Last week there was a list that was being circulated online, allegedly from True Vine Power House given to a couple who wanted to get married in the church. The list included specific fees for the officiating ministers, food for the clergy and church workers and – don’t laugh – a suit for the Pastor and his wife! It is customary to give officiating ministers a cash gift, but it is supposed to be voluntary and not mandatory. Providing refreshments is also usually done, but this list was clear about the brand preferences of the church – they wanted Five Alive juice and canned Maltina. The pastor of this church does not have the kind of empire that can enable him buy a private jet. So perhaps we should not begrudge him a new suit every week, depending on how many weddings he conducts. This is what the house of God has been reduced to. A place where people have to pay for services which should be rendered as part of God’s work, a place where modest contributions within the means of parishioners is not enough, a place where congregants are coerced or manipulated into parting with huge sums of money to sustain a lifestyle they do not live themselves. A place where dubious characters make the largest donations and receive the highest honours, over and above the poor and lowly who toil day and night. This is why the church has become just like any other site of social engagement and interaction. And this is why gunmen had the audacity and heartlessness to barge in to the house of God and open fire on defenceless worshippers.

There was a protest at the Great Faith Ministries International Church in Detroit, Michigan in September 2016, led by a group called New Era Detroit. They were protesting the lack of accountability of wealthy black pastors who own luxurious homes and drive Rolls Royces, yet they have their churches in some of the poorest communities in the country. To add insult to injury, they had the audacity to ask for U$1,000 donations at a church service. If you did not have that much you could give U$300 and there was an ATM machine if you needed cash! This was too much for some of the congregants so there was a protest right there in the church. We have a few of those churches around here too, but we have not heard any loud protests against brazen hustling for church donations. When we ask what happened to the Gospel according to Mathew 6.3, ‘But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth’, we are reminded these are different times. Giving anonymously does not translate into Knighthoods in the church, votes at elections or coveted chieftaincy titles.

Another thing that I found alarming, reading all the commentaries on the Ozubulu incident, is that most of the analysis focused on the emerging sociology of the Igbo culture where money has become the god that people worship. Any drop-out who manages to make a fortune from any kind of business is received with open arms and the money they throw around is respected with no questions asked. I believe this pathologising of Igbo people and their culture (either by themselves or others) has to stop. The blind worship of money is not unique to the Igbo community. Criminal enterprise is an equal opportunity employer, and even though it might use an ethnic division of labour every now and then, criminals are to be found all across the country – kidnappers, armed robbers, terrorists, ritual killers, fraudsters, looters of treasuries, riggers of elections, sexual predators, drug barons, no community has a monopoly over criminal activity. This is not an Igbo problem; it is not even a uniquely Nigerian one. We all have a role to play and we all have questions to answer when something like this happens. Let the true servants of God step up. Let our security agencies do their job without fear or favour. The devil will always show up wearing Prada and bearing irresistible gifts. We only make it easier when we allow him a customized seat in our places of worship.

  • Journey to the afterworld

    Journey to the afterworld

H.A. Goodman’s book: Breaking the Devil’s Heart: A logic of Demons Novel takes one on a journey to the afterworld. It’s a story that captures and exposes Satan’s antics against humanity.

Goodman delves into a Satan’s unknown thoughts in always looking for opportunity to trade on the human soul.

The novel centres on Stewarts (Mr. Willoughby) a former CIA agent who thinks he has a mandate in his “after -life” to destroy Satan’s ploy against humanity that is not aware of how hard the devil is making sure that his plans will be futile.

The novel makes one understand that the devil is only interested in souls who are living an unpleasant life. “Hell” was referred to as “The Company,” a financial institution in the present day New York Stock Exchange. As stocks, derivatives and shares are been traded on the floor so also in the “the company,” human souls are being traded in this instance.

As there are stockbrokers trading on shares for companies so also there are “market makers” who trade on human souls for the devil.

Goodman clearly portrayed the latent ability of human imagination. It helps to understand that in the realm of the spirit there is on distance. For Stewart to know what is going on in the mind of his girl friend Layla, who is a partner with Stewart, there had to be a contact of Stewart‘s spirit with that of Layla’s.

The main characters in this novel, Stewart: Mc Willoughby a former CIA agent and also a history teacher who had worked for the agency for year before he died. It was in his “after life” he reincarnated back to earth to accomplish what has always been on his mind: “Break the Devil’s heart.”

Layla: Ms O’ Toole, a former English teacher in her late twenties has the same ambition as Stewarts and is always found around as a result to her intimate relationship with Stewarts.

Adrain: former student to Layla who appeared at the middle of the novel contributed greatly in accomplishing Stewart’s desire in destroying the devil’s plan to hunt down the human soul.

In terms of the credibility of the characters in the novel, Stewarts who had worked in a criminal detention department in CIA was given an unusual task that had never been addressed before by the agency or any other government organization: Find the root of evil and learn ways to destroy this impulse within mankind.

    H. A. Goodman’s novel is to make the unaware to be aware that there is a spiritual world controlling this physical world. His intention in the book is to

awake the “unawakened” that the devil is not as lazy as we are, he works on a daily basis to make sure humans partake in his punishment in reality for eternity.

He wants readers to understand the dynamics, ploy and antics the devil uses to lure and cajole people to succumb to his plans.

For those who doubt the existence of heaven and hell, the novel proves that they exist.

It also proves that good has always prevailed over evil no matter the enormity of evil. Those who want to understand more about spirituality will find the book very interesting, though it will take some level of maturity to understand the message.

For one to understand the intention and purpose of this book you have to read page by page to the last word. It is a fiction story well told that is hard to put down once you start reading.
