    Lions Club to fight against cancer, diabetics

    The International Association of Lions Club has promised to tackle cancer and diabetics in its 2017-2018 service year.

    It described the two diseases as the major ailments killing masses in the society.

    Its District 404B-1 Nigeria Governor, Oyewole Oyewunmi, an engineer, made this known at the District cabinet meeting in Ogun State. He said his regime would campaign against the two deadly diseases during his tenure.

    He said: ‘’Feeding the hungry, youth empowerment, tackling environmental challenges and eye screening exercises” we would embark on public enlightenment, prevention and treatment of cancer and diabetics until it finally become things of the past in the country’’.

    According to him, the club would be educating the masses on diabetics and cancer, symptoms/detection, risk/effects and treatment options.

    Oyewunmi took over the mantle as the District 404B-1 Governor to serve for the year 2017-2018 from Waheed Kadiri who served for 2016-2017.

    Oyewunmi noted that his regime would also focus on building vocational centres to be called “LionsDen” in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital and provide grants for youth empowerment training programme in partnership with Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO).

    He appealed to members to support the projects through payment of their dues. He noted that it would only achieve the proposed projects through the prompt payment of dues and voluntary donations.

    ‘Izzy’ is a 5­year­old German Shepherd, a very special one: he has been trained to smell when his master is about to have a hypo­glycaemic crisis, lose consciousness and slip into a coma.

    He can sense the crisis coming 20 minutes in advance.

    Day and night, Izzy is alert for imminent danger: he is a lifesaving dog, a guardian angel for people suffering from diabetes. His support has changed the life of Angel Fraguada from Geneva, who has suffered from Type 1 diabetes for the last 14 years.

    His pancreas, all of a sudden, stopped producing insulin; which regulates sugar levels in the blood. Angel is now forced to inject himself with insulin every day, more than once a day. In Switzerland, forty thousand people share this fate, including many children.

    Particularly when sufferers are very young, keeping sugar levels under control can be a marathon for their parents, who are forced to wake up various times during the night to avoid dangerous hypo­glycaemic crises.

    Angel Fraguada has worked for numerous years as an acrobat in shows such as “Cirque du Soleil”.

    He struggled with managing his diabetes and hypoglycaemia could catch him at any time. “Many factors influence sugar levels in the blood; from stress to physical activity. It has happened to me that I’ve had to be rescued by the ambulance”, he explains.

    During one of these occurrences, seven years ago, a first aider told him about dogs for diabetic people. Angel was in the United States at the time, where training programs for such dogs had been in existence for many years.

    That’s how Angel started searching for a service dog. He attended courses in the States and he is now a trainer of lifesaving dogs himself.

    Angel trained his German Shepherd who has warned him of changes in his sugar levels, night and day for the last four years, preventing dangerous hypo­glycaemia as well as damaging hyper-glycaemia. “I trained Izzy to alert me when sugar leaves a determined safety range”, he said, and

    Izzy often senses the change before it is detected by the glycaemia measuring machine. “Sometimes he starts barking 20 minutes before the sugar begins to drop or rise alarmingly”. This gives Angel the time to rebalance his blood sugar levels, by either having something sweet or injecting insulin.

    The dog senses in advance the changes in sugar levels Dogs for diabetics are trained to recognise a specific smell, undetectable by humans, which signals a change in their master’s blood sugar levels, preluding to a hypo­ or hyper­glycaemic crisis.

    ‘Izzy’ and Angel have now become inseparable. The German Shepherd follows him everywhere.

    Carol, Angel’s wife, is happy too, in particular for the help Izzy provides during the night time, when hypoglycaemic crises can reach patients as they sleep and lead them to slip into a coma without anyone noticing. “That’s why Izzy sleeps in our bedroom”, she says.

    The training could last one year. Not any dog can become an ‘alerting friend’ and assist a diabetic person. What makes the difference is the sense of smell, the type of dog and, even more importantly, the feeling between the dog and its master. “The dogs must have a very sensitive nose, it takes between 6 and 18 months to train them. But the master must be trained as well, the bond between the two is very important: they have to become a tight­knit team. My dog, for example, follows me everywhere, even in the plane,” explains Angel Fraguada.

    In Switzerland Angel is helping a few families with diabetic kids and adults to find and train a service dog, so that they can manage dangerous sugar peaks, in particular during night hours.

    Each dog is trained to assist a single and specific diabetic master, because it has to detect the smells produced by that particular person. It is therefore a unique bond.

    The alert system is also personalised and it is decided together with the patient: it becomes a sort of intimate language between the person and the dog, who reacts to the peaks or drops of glycaemia to keep it within the safe range. Everything is very personal. “It is a hard job to train a dog for diabetics but the results are very positive. We should not forget though that they are not machines and they can be mistaken”, says Angel.

    He explains that there is a big market for these dogs in the States and buying one that is already trained can cost a lot. Angel Fraguada evaluates each situation and issues a quote for the training.

  • Oral health care for diabetics

    Diabetes mellitus is a disease state where there is an excess level of glucose in the blood over a long period of time. The high blood glucose is loosely referred to as high blood sugar, as glucose is a type /class of sugar. The condition can damage many body parts including the heart, vessels, eyes, kidneys and literarily could affect all body organs. The incidence in the general population is rising at an alarming rate. The resultant effect on the heart and the blood vessels can lead to cardiovascular accidents, strokes, renal and organ failures. Infections can set in such as gangrene of the limbs, ulcers etc.

    Whilst Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease, a lot can be done to slow down the problems or complications that could arise with regards to the oral health of the diabetic.

    Diabetics tend to have a higher incidence of gum and supporting tissues problem, referred to as gingivitis and periodontitis. This does not preclude these two conditions happening to non-diabetic patients.

    Plaque which is a sticky film full of germs accumulates continually on the surface of the teeth and this is the cause of oral health problems. Plaque is pronounced as PLAK.

    High blood glucose levels encourages the germs in the plaque to grow, the resultant effect is a red sore and swollen gum, this makes the gums to bleed readily most especially after brushing. This is the first sign of inflammation of the gums, gingivitis noticed. A patient told his dentist that he noticed bleeding in the gums when ever he brushed. I also had an experience with a lady who actually was of the opinion she might soon be anaemic because she sees blood every time in her saliva whenever she brushed her teeth.

    Diabetics have to take extra care of their oral health as there is tendency to have more gum and tooth problems, more so when the blood glucose levels are poorly controlled or poor compliance with their medication. A rough guide will be to be aware that the likelihood of getting a bad case of gum disease and teeth where the teeth may become lose is someone with diabetes over the age of forty-five.

    Should the gingivitis and periodontal problems be ignored, in time the gums pull away from the teeth and the teeth appear to be long and unsightly apart from the likelihood of mobility of the teeth.

    It will be logical for most diabetics to visit the dentist more regularly than the general population for routine check up and to have a preventive therapy. It will be necessary to bring your medication to the dentist at any visit and to take the medication regularly as advised by the general practitioner. The general medical practitioner will be in a position to advise how best to control your blood sugar levels.

    Diabetics who have had some dental work may have some sore mouth after treatment, making chewing difficult, it will be therefore necessary to take steps to adjust the daily routine whilst the mouth heals.

  • Free screening, treatment for diabetics

    Lucky residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja recently benefited from a free diabetes testing and treatment by the Senator Lee Maeba foundation.

    Maeba who described the disease as a silent killer said there is an urgent need curb the prevalence of diabetes amongst FCT residents.

    Senator Lee Maeba spoke recently in Abuja at the Kick-off of the Free Screening for Diabetes organized by his foundation, “Senator Lee Maeba’s Foundation” in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Health.

    He pointed out that “attention is diverted to HIV/AIDS,  while diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure are taking many lives”, saying diabetes kills more than aids and cancer put together.

    He therefore tasked government at all levels on the need to create a special centres for testing and treatment of diabetes in the country.

    Maeba said that a lot of funds have been pushed to the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) to fighting HIV/AIDS, while other killer diseases that have sent many Nigerians to their early graves were neglected.

    He therefore called on government and other relevant stakeholders to commit reasonable resources to diabetes as according to him, such commitment would help in reducing the spread of the disease in the country.

    The senator who is also the president of the foundation enjoined Nigerians to live diabetes free lives by eating balance diet, reducing alcohol intake, avoiding cigarettes, exercising regularly and by reducing sugar intake.

    Stating that the World Diabetes Day is marked yearly on the 4th of November, the senator said the day was created by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organisation in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes now poses.

    Earlier, while declaring the exercise opened, the minister of health, Professor Christian Onyebuchi Chukwu said that the Federal Government was very much committed to reducing the burden of diabetes and other None Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Nigeria but cannot do it alone without the cooperation of the relevant stakeholders in the country.

    He said it was for that reason that the ministry is into partnership and collaboration with well-meaning organizations, while commending Senator Lee Maeba’s Foundation for organising such an important event as part of the activities to commemorate this year’s World Diabetes Day.

    The minister quoted the World Health Organisation (WHO) to have estimated that over 346 million people worldwide have diabetes and this number is likely to be more than double in 2030 if nothing urgent is done.

    He explained that most of the deaths from diabetes (more than three-quarters) occur in low and middle income countries including Nigeria, adding that the 1990-1992 national survey put the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus at 2.7% (1.05 million Nigerians over 15 years of age).

    Represented at the occasion by the permanent secretary, Ambassador Sani Bala, the minister said only 21% (225,000) were aware of their condition and only 18% (198,000) were on treatment.

    The minister maintained that the striking figures showed that millions of Nigerians have diabetes and many more are at the risk of developing it in the future.

    According to him, other factors associated with the risk for developing diabetes (particularly, type 2) include: overweight, age greater than 44 years, having a parents or sibling with diabetes, history of gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), tobacco use and excessive use of alcohol.

    He advised Nigerians to start protecting themselves and their families from diabetes by Identifying risk factors and take small steps to avoid them. For those who already have diabetes, the minister said it was very important to follow doctor’s advice and be regular with check-up appointments
