  • Messi is better than Maradona, says Ramos

Spain captain, Sergio Ramos has responded to a putdown from Argentina great Diego Maradona by making an unlikely declaration of admiration for Lionel Messi.

Messi is his usual enemy as the talisman of Real Madrid’s arch-rivals Barcelona.

Maradona, his country’s 1986 World Cup-winning captain, remarked this week that “Ramos is no superstar, the real superstar defender is Diego Godin” when comparing Spain’s serial-winner Ramos with the Uruguay captain.

Ramos was asked what he made of Maradona’s comments after Spain’s 1-0 World Cup Group B win over Iran, and chose to praise Messi, who has led Barcelona to numerous wins over Real Madrid.

“I respect Maradona because he is an all-time great; I think he was a star.

“But I’ll also tell you that Argentine football knows Maradona is light years behind their number one player, which is Messi,” Ramos said.

Messi, who lost the last World Cup final to Germany as captain of Argentina, missed a penalty in his side’s 1-1 draw with Iceland.

He is under pressure to propel his side to victory over Group D leaders Croatia on Thursday.

  • Maradona sacked at UAE’s Fujairah SC

Argentine football legend Diego Maradona was sacked at United Arab Emirates ( UAE ) first division club Fujairah SC on Friday, his lawyer Matias Morla confirmed on Saturday.

After Fujairah SC failed to gain automatic promotion to the Arabian Gulf League ( AGL ) on Friday, Maradona lost his job at the UAE league.

Fujairah SC had a 1-1 draw with Khorfakkan in their last domestic league match of the season, which meant that Maradona’s team landed third in the UAE table and therefore missed the chance of direct entry into the Arabian Gulf League, reported Dubai’s daily Sports 360 degrees.

However, Fujairah SC still has an opportunity to reach the AGL if they can beat AGL bottom club Hatta in a two-legged playoff next month scheduled on May 9 and May 13, according to the Abu Dhabi daily The National.

The 57-year-old Argentinean took over the UAE’s club in May 2017. He also coached Dubai’s Al Wasl soccer club from May 2011 to July 2012.

    Maradona unveils personal 12ft statue

Diego Maradona was on hand to unveil an incredible 12ft statue of himself holding the World Cup in Kolkata, India, but questions were immediately raised over whether it actually looks like him.

The former Argentina international has become something of an icon in the football-mad city after an original visit in 2008, during which thousands of fans packed into the airport to catch a glimpse of one of the game’s greats.

His second public appearance has been a long-time coming having originally been scheduled for September, meaning the statue had to stay behind its blue and white curtain for months before the man himself could unveil it at a ceremony on Monday.

An original photo from Argentina’s World Cup wins in the Atzeca Stadium over 31 years ago

But despite the extra time his delayed arrival allowed sculptors, they were still unable to produce a statue that bared much resemblance to the enigmatic young man who inspired Argentina to a World Cup victory in Mexico 31 years ago.

The chubby cheeks and double chin given to his effigy seem to bear more likeness to Maradona’s more portly figure of today rather than the athletic physique he sported during his playing career.

The Argentine was on hand to make donations to charity and waved off a new ambulance

The 57-year-old, along with girlfriend Rocio Oliva, were also in Kolkata for charitable reasons and handed cheques worth 10,000 rupees (£116) to 11 cancer patients. He also waved off a new ambulance before addressing the huge crowd.

‘I am not god of football but a simple footballer,’ he said modestly. ‘I’m happy to be here in Kolkata again. It’s amazing to have my statue here.’

Maradona is also due to take on cricket icon Sourav Ganguly in an exhibition match titled ‘Diego vs Dada’ in nearby Barasat, although local media appears to doubt it will actually happen.

In other recent statue news, Lionel Messi saw his own likeness in Argentina’s capital of Buenos Aires targeted by vandals for a second time in the space of a year. Last week, the statue was cut down and left beside its podium for local authorities to later discover.

  • Five things to know about Lineker – 2018 world cup draw host

Five things to know about Lineker – 2018 world cup draw host

Gary Lineker, who won the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup, was announced last week as the host and will be partnered by Russian Sports Journalists, Maria Komandnaya to coordinate together the 2018 World Cup final draw billed for Friday, December 1, 2017.

It is less than a week for the draws that will determine the groupings of the 32 countries that had booked a ticket at next year’s World Cup in Russia, and it is pertinent to have an insight of who Lineker, the main conductor of the Draw Ceremony is.

These 5 things about Lineker, starting with the more astonishing ones to the most jaw-dropping, are guaranteed to keep your head swirling. Carefully go through them.

    1. Was predicted not to make a living out of football:

After leaving school with just four O’ Levels, one of Lineker’s teachers predicted that he would never make it as a footballer.

The teacher attributed the failure to his passion for football, and he wrote on his report card that “he concentrates too much on football and that he would never make a living at that.”

    1. England’s highest goal scorer at the World Cup:

The former striker who was capped 80 times by England is the Three Lions’ all-time scorer at the World Cup with 10 goals.

With six goals at the 1986 World Cup, Lineker emerged as the top scorer of the tournament, one that had the likes of Jorge Valdano, Socrates and Diego Maradona as participants.

No English player has yet to win a World Cup Golden Boot even after seven World Cups.

    1. Highest goal scorer with three different English clubs:

The former Barcelona forward is the only player to have been the top scorer with three different clubs in England. In 1984 for Leiceser City, Lineker emerged as the joint top scorer with Chelsea’s Kerry Dixon. The duo recorded 24 goals apiece.

In 1985, Lineker moved to Everton in a deal worth around £800,000. He scored 30 goals for Everton in his debut season and finished the season as the league’s top scorer for the second time in a row.

In the 1989 season, he emerged again as the English league’s top division highest scorer– scoring 24 goals for Tottenham Hotspur.

    1. Presented a show in 2016 with shorts:

Lineker, who is BT Sport’s lead presenter for Champions League back in 2016, appeared in the first BBC Match of the Day for the 2016/2017 season in boxer shorts.

The 57-year-old had promised in a tweet in 2015 that, if his former club, Leicester, should win the 2015/2016 Premier League, he would appear on the BBC match of the day in his undies. And appear he did!

    1. Had zero yellow card in his entire playing career:

With a 16-year playing career that saw him had spells with the likes of Barcelona, Tottenham, Leicester City, Everton and Nagoya Grampus Eight, Lineker went his entire career without receiving neither a yellow card nor a red. This feat earned him the FIFA Fair Play Award in 1990.

Hope Lineker has a great day on Friday like he did during his playing days.

  • Maradona to reunite with Lineker at World Cup draw

Maradona to reunite with Lineker at World Cup draw

Diego Maradona will be reunited on stage with World Cup rival Gary Lineker at the draw in Moscow next week.

Fifa says Maradona will represent Argentina in the State Kremlin Palace, where all eight World Cup-winning nations will send a playing great to assist in the draw.

Maradona, now in charge of UAE club Fujairah, captained Argentina to the 1986 title, eliminating Lineker’s England in the quarter-finals with the help of his “Hand of God” goal in Mexico City.

Lineker will host the 32-nation ceremony on December 1. England will be officially represented by Gordon Banks, goalkeeper on the 1966 team.

The other draw assistants are Laurent Blanc, Cafu, Fabio Cannavaro, Diego Forlan, Carles Puyol and Nikita Simonyan for host Russia. Former Germany forward Miroslav Klose will bring the World Cup trophy on stage.

Qualified countries are eagerly awaiting the emergence of their group opponents with many hoping praying to have wheat they dubbed favorable draw that can guarantee survival in the first stage.

Nigeria, Egypt, Senegal Tunisia and Morocco will be representing the continent in Russia. Super Eagles made history as the first African country to qualify for Russia 2018, booking a ticket even before the last match against Algeria. The Gernot Rohr tutored side will be hoping to improve on their performance at the Mundial.

Russia 2018 would mark Nigeria’s 6th appearance at the stage. In the 1994 edition in USA the Eagles booked exit in the group of 16 losing in the final match to Italy 2-1 after extra time. In the 1998 edition in France the Eagles again booked exit in the round of 16, losing 4-1 to Denmark. The 2002 and 2010 editions were recorded as the poorest outing with first round crash outs. In 2014 in Brazil the Eagles returned to the group of 16 exit. Nigerians are optimistic that the Eagles can go past the group of 16 with some intensifying prayer for the team to escape group of death come December 1 when the draw will be made in the Kremlin Palace.

  • Thank God there was no VAR in 1986-Maradona

Thank God there was no VAR in 1986-Maradona

Diego Maradona has thrown his weight behind the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) while at the same time thanking God,  that the method was not in existence, when he led Argentina to win the world cup in 1986.

Maradona who clinched golden ball of the tournament was not only splendid in his performance in that edition of the world cup but

also became popular for his famous hand of God goal which saw Argentina make it all the way to the final where they defeated Germany 3-2 in the final.

Maradona etched himself into the history of the World Cup at the tournament in Mexico in 1986.

As he rose to challenge England’s Peter Shilton, the Argentina captain used his hand to flick the ball past the goalkeeper and give his side the lead.

The mercurial playmaker went on to score a sensational second that proved crucial in La Albiceleste’s 2-1 quarter-final victory, Argentina going on to lift the title.

With the VAR system  which was used during the Confederations Cup and will be available during the upcoming Bundesliga campaign

Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser would have been able to check the validity of Maradona’s iconic goal, and the 56-year-old knows it would have been chalked off.

“I thought about it and, sure, that goal wouldn’t have stood if technology had been around,” Maradona told FIFA.com.

“And I’ll tell you something else: at the 1990 World Cup I used my hand to clear the ball off the line against the Soviet Union. We were lucky because the referee didn’t see it.

“You couldn’t use technology back then, but it’s a different story today.”

“It’s not just my goal in ’86 that wouldn’t have counted,” Maradona added. “Let’s not forget that England won the World Cup in ’66 with a shot that didn’t go over the line.

“Then it happened to them in 2010, when [Frank] Lampard’s shot crossed the line against Germany but wasn’t given. England had the

ball and scored the goal they deserved, but Germany grew in confidence after that and it changed the match completely.”

And Maradona believes now is the time to embrace technology to reduce the danger of controversy at future tournaments.

“There have been lots of incidents where World Cup history would have been different if technology had been used. It’s time to change all that,” he said.

“People used to say that we’d waste a lot of time that it would cause a lot of annoyance. But that’s not the case.

“People get annoyed when something that shouldn’t be given is given, or when you have a goal wrongly disallowed.

“Technology brings transparency and quality, and it provides a positive outcome for teams who decide to attack and take risks.”

Russian journalist accuses Maradona of ripping her clothes off

A Russian journalist has filed a formal complaint against football icon Diego Maradona accusing him ripping her clothes off when she went to his room to interview him.

Ekaterina Nadolskaya, 30, said the Argentine former sports star took her dress off before his men carried her into the corridor in her underwear.

She claims she was forced to wait half naked in the lobby for three hours as she waited for her clothes to be returned.

Maradona, 56, denies the accusation, and his aides allege the reporter ‘started undressing herself’ prompting him to call hotel security in St Petersburg.

Ms Nadolskaya said she had been in the lobby bar of his hotel when they started talking.

‘I asked him for an interview. He invited me to his room,’ she said.

A female friend accompanied her but soon left, according to her account in a complaint to the Russian Investigative Committee, seen as an equivalent of the FBI.

‘Maradona shut the door, and first starting answering my questions and then began harassing me,’ she said.

He forced off her dress and she ‘managed to stop the harassment only when she was in her underwear’, reported newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda.

Maradona ‘even tried to take her dress off, and actually managed to do so.’

She told her employers sm.news.ru: ‘I got scared and threatened him I would call the police.

‘In turn, he called the hotel security service.

‘Three people carried me to the corridor.

‘My belongings were left in the room.

‘My phone was taken and not returned till three hours later.’

She claimed that Maradona’s ‘assistant came and threw $500 US dollars at me’.

The journalist complained that she was forced to sit for three hours in only her underwear in the lobby of the five star hotel before her clothing was returned.

Local paper Komsomolskaya Pravda reported Employees of the hotel tried to kick her out but she insisted she would only leave with police, who arrived at 8am.

She said: ‘That is when I got my dress back.

    ‘No one apologised.

‘I am sorry that Maradona acted the way he did, it’s not worthy of a man.

‘What he did can be seen on the CCTV footage.’

She said she was ‘stressed out’ after the alleged bedroom incident.

Sources close to the retired footballer,  seen by many as the greatest player ever, said the woman ‘got to his room and started undressing herself’.

‘Maradona didn’t like it and asked her to leave,’ they said.

The hotel – which was not named – played down the problem to Russian newspapers, claiming the night was ‘quiet’.

The newspaper said representatives of the Investigative Committee interrogated hotel personnel and Maradona, but the detectives made no comment.

The Argentine was in Russia for the Confederation Cup final, won by Germany on Sunday.

He was an official guest of the tournament organisers.

His trip to Russia came amid suggestions he may seek a Russian passport from Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.

Vitaly Mutko, Russia’s vice premier and former sports minister, said: ‘Let’s not run ahead. We haven’t discussed this but in general he’s willing to talk.’

Maradona accuses former wife Villafañe of stealing

Where there was fire, ashes remain – except in the troubled love story of Argentinian soccer star Diego Armando Maradona and his ex-wife, Claudia Villafañe.

In the latest scandal, the former Argentinean soccer star accused Villafañe of buying not one, but seven luxurious properties in one of the tallest residential skyscrapers in Miami, Florida, with his money.

‘Claudia Villafañe is a thief,’ the former Argentinean soccer star said of his ex, whom he was married to for 14 years.

The former Argentinean soccer star accused Villafañe of buying not one, but seven luxurious properties in one of the tallest residential skyscrapers in Miami, Florida, with his money.

In March of 2003, she filed for divorce and custody of their two daughters due to his copious drug use.

The legal battle has been ongoing since.

He now alleges that it’s nearly impossible for her to own the luxurious apartments in the stunning 44-story Portofino Tower, located in South Beach, if it wasn’t for the money she’s allegedly plundered from him. In 2015, Maradona accused her of stealing $9 million from his bank accounts.

Some of the amenities at the multimillion dollar apartments include floor-to-ceiling windows with breath-taking views of the bay and city, private terraces, 24-security, tennis courts, and five-star services.

The average listing price ranges from $350,000 to $11 million.

‘She doesn’t have a job, she doesn’t know how to cook, No way could she be the sole proprietor of those apartments, that’s all my money,’ he explained.

In a recently published voicemail, Maradona can be heard questioning the large purchase in the high-rise.

‘I thought we only owned one apartment, the small one which we later sold to buy a slightly bigger one for the girls (their daughters).’

He then insinuates that she must be great at math, before adding that he doubts her current boyfriend can afford the apartments.

Known as the Golden Boy, the 56-year-old was the central figure and hero of Argentina’s 1986 World Cup. He was one of the most famous figures of the 1980s and continues being an icon worldwide.

Commonly referred to as the Hand of God because of his infamous goal in that world cup, he served as the coach for the national team in 2008. He’s said he’s been clean from drugs for over 12 years.

Dani Alves branded ‘an idiot’ by Diego Maradona over ‘Hand of God’

Diego Maradona has called Juventus right back Dani Alves ‘an idiot’ after he criticised the Argentina legend for his infamous Hand of God goal.

Alves said Maradona – who deliberately punched the ball past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton in the 1986 World Cup quarter final – should not be regarded as a role model for young footballers.

However Maradona hit back, saying Alves was a poor example of a right back – and that players in his position know little about the game anyway.

Maradona told TyC Sports: ‘Dani Alves is an idiot. He makes 28 passes and only gets four right. As a right-back, Cafu and Maicon were good. Dani Alves? Poor thing.

‘He speaks because he plays in a position on the pitch where football is not played. They touch the ball three times and make eight fouls per game.’

Maradona is generally regarded as one of the greatest footballers to play the game, and scored a brilliant goal soon after the Hand of God, dribbling past five England players as Argentina won on their way to lifting the World Cup.

Alves however said he would be ashamed if he had won a cup after cheating, and compared Maradona unfavourably to a current Argentina superstar, Lionel Messi.

He told Esporte Interativo: ‘You want to compare Messi to Maradona? You can’t compare them.

‘I would not be proud to say that I won a World Cup with a “Hand of God.” I wouldn’t be able to tell my son that I won a World Cup like this with the whole world talking about it. A sportsman like this can’t be an example for youngsters.’

Alves has been in the headlines lately amid speculation he is set to leave Juventus, with Chelsea and Manchester City among those interested.

    Maradona criticises Messi

Argentina’s Diego Maradona has taken a jibe at compatriot Lionel Messi for his absence at the Best FIFA Footbal Awards held in Zurich on Monday . He also reproached Barça players for not attending the event.

Maradona who still has not been able to deal well with the success and talent of Messi said:

“I’m disappointed with Messi, from watching television at home you cannot fight anything or anyone — here you can fight,” Maradona told Televisión Española.

“I do not know why Barcelona did not come to such an important event. They have priorities and the priority was for Leo not to come. I think coming here [Zurich] they could fight more than they would in Barcelona.”
