    Meshref targets revenge against Oshonaike

Still being pained by the manner she was beaten in the women’s singles final of the 2016 ITTF Africa Championships by Nigeria’s Olufunke Oshonaike, Egypt’s Dina Meshref is full of venom hoping to avenge the defeat at the 2017 ITTF Africa Cup holding in Agadir, Morocco.

Like her male counterpart, Meshref has been unbeaten in all the finals of any continental tournament since 2015, but the 2016 loss came as a shock to the 2015 African Games gold medallist.

“I know that the competition in Agadir, Morocco would be tough with a lot of worthy competitors. I am re-checking all my weaknesses that led to the defeat in October, and I am working hard in avoiding them again this time whether I play against Olufunke Oshonaike or any other player,” she said.

The America University of Cairo graduate undergone a three-week training prior to the tournament and she is now in good shape to roar in Agadir. “I think I had a good 3-week period to practice and prepare for the tournament, also, I believe the matches at the World Championships in Düsseldorf were good to prepare me for Morocco.”

“The challenge will be from my teammates and the Nigerian players. I hope I can win the African Cup and qualify to the World Cup this year. It’s always great to represent Egypt at a prestigious event such as the World Cup,” Meshref admitted.

    Oshonaike …nurturing future stars

At 42, Olufunke Oshonaike has continued to show her passion and commitment to table tennis, the sport that brought her to the limelight. At present, Oshonaike is the best female table tennis player in Africa after winning the African Championship in Morocco last year. However, the Germany-based mother of two told OLALEKAN OKUSAN that she was pained about the dwindling fortunes of the sport and this has prompted her to organise a clinic. She also spoke on the need for athletes to be discipline in their trade.

IN the history of the African Games, Olufunke Oshonaike is the most successful female table tennis player having won more medals than any other player. She was three-time finalist in the women’s singles event of the African Games while she remains the only player to have won the women’s singles title back-to-back in 1999 and 2003.

However, with the emergence of young players like Dina Meshref, Nadeen El-Dawlatly and Edem Offiong, Olufunke Oshonaike rating waned. But she never gave up as she continued to show deep passion for the sport with her presence in virtually all the continental competitions.

In most of the competitions, she ensured she made it to the last four, but her efforts never fetch her expected laurels.

She, however, braved the odds to become Africa’s champion again and she did it in an amazing fashion in Morocco last October. As the only female Nigerian player competing at the 2016 ITTF African Championships amidst the array of players from Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria, Oshonaike in her 40s turned back the clock with an emphatic 4-2 win over defending champion, Dina Meshref of Egypt to emerge as the best female player in the competition.

Based in Hamburg, Germany with her family, Oshonaike is, however, sad that the fortunes of female players in Nigeria is going down and she decided to organise a clinic for junior players in Nigeria.

According to  Oshonaike, the essence of the 10-day camping exercise is to inspire and motivate the players to passionately be committed to the sport.

“Not many of the players know my story but I started like them too. But during our days, discipline was very key and we took the sport very serious. I can understand the frustration most Nigerian athletes are faced with in recent times particularly considering the economic recession in the country. But I still want them to know that they can make name for themselves and their families when they take the sport serious.

“They must be committed to the sport and that is part of the things I intend to share with them during the camp. My focus is basically on the female players because we are not producing top class female players like before,” she lamented.

“I love table tennis and the sport has given me all what I need in life. Apart from the fame, I have made a tidy fortune from the sport. All these were made possible because I was committed to the sport and this made it possible for me to achieve all what I wanted to.  Unfortunately these days, the Nigerian players are frustrated because of lack of exposure and this has discouraged most of them.

“I am hopeful that the clinic will help to the kids focus on their table tennis career. I want to use the opportunity to inspire and also help them with some equipment that will aid them in training. I really want to focus on the female players and I hope that after telling them my story, they will be encouraged to aim high in the sport,” she said.

Oshonaike revealed that apart from the clinic, top 16 boys and girls in the country would also compete in a two-day tournament to ascertain the best in the country. She added that the top players in the mini-tournament would get her support to become the world beaters in the game.

The six-time Olympian believes the gesture will surely give the players hope. “I believe when top players like us organise such programme for the young players, they can be inspired and motivated to take a cue from us. I am hoping to arrive in Lagos, Nigeria on February 24 for the clinic that will begin on February 25 to March 5 at the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) Training Centre of the Lagos National Stadium,” she added.

The invited players for the clinic are made up of 11 girls and nine boys and they are expected to also use the tournament to tune up for the forthcoming African Junior Championships holding in Tunisia come April.

Morocco triumph will inspire young players – Oshonaike

After reclaiming her title 24 years after, Olufunke Oshonaike believes the victory in morocco would surely inspire young female players in Nigeria.
Oshonaike, who defeated former African champion, Egypt’s Dina Meshref to emerge as the new continental champion at the ITTF Africa Senior Championships held in Agadir, Morocco.
The 41-year-old six-time Olympian first won the African title in 1992 with her last triumph coming in 2002.
“I am so excited that I can still do it and this is also an inspiration for girls that no matter your age, you can achieve whatever you want to in life. My victory in Morocco is a lesson to the young ones that they should not give up irrespective of the challenges they are facing in the country. A lot of things are happening in Nigeria that could frustrate one, but still they should not give up. Forget about what the coaches are doing or what the country is doing to you, just be focused and love and enjoy what you are doing and surely, you will get there one day. Even when you are married with kids, you can still get to where you want to get to,” Oshonaike said.
The Germany-based star is not ready to quit the sport that she has been playing in the last two decades saying, “I’m not going to stop playing until I find anybody that could beat me. Until the young girls are ready to take over and if they are not ready, I’ll keep on playing for my country. After all, my family and children are not disturbing me. They love seeing me play. But as soon as I see any serious contender, I’ll throw-in the towel and take a bow.”

Rio Olympics: Nigeria, Egypt brace up for ITTF World Team Championships

The battle for Africa’s sole ticket in the team event of Rio 2016 Olympics will be ignited when the two best teams in the continental – Nigeria and Egypt begin their campaign at the ITTF World Team Championships holding in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

With the two teams presenting a strong side in Malaysia after the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup in Sudan.

For Segun Toriola of Nigeria, the battle for the sole slot between Nigeria and Egypt would be a tough challenge.

“Being a team event tournament, I think we need to use this competition to improve the country’s ranking as well as fight for the sole slot of the continent to be able to play in the team event of the Olympics. Personally, my target in Malaysia is to improve Nigeria team ranking but if we talking about winning for Rio team event  ticket, for now I cannot say it is possible or not but is 50/50 chance and I believe if we all play very good and luck on team side, it is possible we make it,” Toriola said.

Also, Egypt’s Dina Meshref believes they have the wherewithal to make it to division one of the women event. “I hope my team (women’s) could upgrade to division 1 this year. I believe we are capable of doing so even though it will require huge efforts from all the team members. It’s a tough challenge but we all hope we can do it. Our target is to perform very well in all matches, and upgrade to division 1 (the championship division).”

On the Olympics team event qualification, the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup champion said: “I believe our team can win the sole slot to represent Africa in the next Olympics because our ranking as a team is good enough until now to qualify us to play the teams event in Rio. I hope we can make it.”

Aruna Quadri to represent Africa at ITTF World Cup

For the third time, Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri will be representing Africa at the ITTF World Cup after the 2014 ITTF Star Player defeated his arch-rival, Egypt’s Omar Assar 4-1 to win the 2016 ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup in Sudan.

  • ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup: Why I couldn’t make it to Sudan – Oshonaike

ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup: Why I couldn’t make it to Sudan – Oshonaike

After absenting herself from the 2016 ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup in Sudan, six-time Olympian, Olufunke Oshonaike has blamed it on paucity of fund.

The trio of Aruna Quadri, Segun Toriola and Edem Offiong had to sponsor themselves to the tournament after the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) failed the secure the needed fund for the trip from the National Sports Commission (NSC).

However, the Germany-based star told NationSport from her base in Hamburg that she would have loved to be at the tournament but she could not raise the fund to prosecute the trip. She lamented that it is disheartening that athletes had to be using their hard-earned money to represent their fatherland.

“I don’t think this is too good for the country that in the year of the Olympics and we had a competition that would have helped us prepare well and unfortunately we could not get fund from NSC. At several times, we had to sponsor ourselves to competition and I think this is not too good for us because we also have responsibilities to our family,” she lamented.

For the players competing at the Rio Olympics, Oshonaike tasked NSC to support all athletes to fulfil their dream of making the country proud. “Being the Olympics year, I want to use this medium to task the NSC to please support every athlete going to the Olympics in Brazil because this is the biggest stage for all of us,” she added.

Meanwhile, Nigerian players failed to make it to the final in the women event after Edem Offiong was defeated 4-1 in the semifinal by Egypt’s Dina Meshref.

  • ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup: Offiong to redeem image in Sudan

ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup: Offiong to redeem image in Sudan

Edem Offiong has put the disappointment of the 2015 African Games in Congo Brazzaville as what she is hoping for at the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup is Sudan is to right the wrong that befell her few months ago.

As the defending champion of the African Games, Edem Offiong could on hold to her title as she was shown the exit in the knockout stage by the eventual winner, Egypt’s Dina Meshref.

However, a determined Offiong who is now playing her trade in the Portuguese league said she is hoping to redeem her image by clinching the title in Sudan.

“I know it is not going to be easy in Sudan though my expectation is high because I am targeting the title in Sudan. I did not regret that I could not retain my singles title at the African Games in Brazzaville because the chat did not favour after I failed to feature at the 2015 African Senior Cup in Cameroun. I was not ranked for the games and this made me to play against Dine Meshref early in the competition. She was lucky to have won because I played incredibly well and she even admitted it,” she lamented.

She added: “I must say that the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup is going to be a tough one which I know. My last appearance in the competition was a disaster because I got a walkover, when Nigeria hosted the competition which was also unbelievable for everybody. But as an athlete, you have to get used to the fact that you can win today and lose tomorrow. You have to take the positive out of a defeat and go back to work hard which I did. I am ready to get to the final in this event and probably win the title,” she enthused.

On what to expect in Sudan, Edem Offiong said: “I am ready for this tournament and I can assure you that all my opponents will feel the heat back-to-back. Since I returned to my base in Portugal it has not been easy playing matches non-stop. But the good about the whole scenario is that we have been winning all our matches. I must thank my teammates as well as my coach. I must single out the support we are getting form my club president, Garrido for ensuring that as ladies, we are well catered for before and after every match. I must acknowledge that this has really made me a better player.”

Edem Offiong hopes to play for another six years, saying “I intend to play as long as my strength continues to carry me.”

She however, expressed optimism that she would make it to her third Olympics appearance in Brazil at the Olympics Qualifying tournament which holds after the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup.

  • Why Nigeria remains a threat, by Egypt’s Meshref

Why Nigeria remains a threat, by Egypt’s Meshref

In previous tournaments,  Nigeria could not  withstand Egypt but with what happened in the team events of the ongoing International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa Senior Championship in Cairo, there are strong indications that the West Africa giant is narrowing the gap between the two continental power houses.

Even Egypt’s Dina Meshref admitted to SportingLife after their surprise 3-2 win over the Nigerian female team that playing against the West Africans has always been a difficult task.

“I want to say playing against Nigeria has always been a difficult one for us even when we beat them 3-0, we know we have to be at our best to overcome them. They are the only team in Africa that has different style of play and their players are naturally talented. Regardless of any Nigerian you are playing, you have to be at 100 percent in form to defeat them because they have good service coupled with their topspin,” she admitted.

Meshref, who guided her teammates to victory over a Funke Oshonaike-inspired Nigerian side, said the likes of Edem Offiong, Cecilia Otu-Akpan and Oshonaike are still playing better despite years of featuring for Nigeria.

“When we started playing table tennis, we have been hearing of Offiong, Otu-Akpan and Oshonaike and we thought before we got to the senior team, they would have retired but we met them and they are still playing better,  this goes to show that whenever you are playing them, you have to be 100 per cent focused and do not play to the gallery because they are great players in Africa,” she said.

The former African Junior Champion described the 3-2 win over the Nigerians as very tense, saying that it was luck that gave them the victory as they were on the verge of losing after losing their first two matches to give Nigeria a 2-0 lead. “It was sheer determination coupled with our belief that aided us because we were surprised that they (Nigeria) are still playing good. So for us Nigeria remains the only threat to us in Africa,” she explained.
