Tinubu Media Force slams Dino Melaye’s debt critique as laughable

The Tinubu Media Force has dismissed recent remarks by Dino Melaye on Nigeria’s borrowing under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing his financial critique as unserious, laughable, and lacking credible economic reasoning.

The group, in a statement by its national coordinator, Abiola Oluwagbenga, said Melaye’s comments reduced a complex fiscal issue to mere political theatrics, offering no meaningful contribution to the national conversation.

According to the statement, Melaye deliberately focused only on borrowing while ignoring broader financial reforms and debt management strategies implemented by the Tinubu administration.

It noted that while Melaye portrayed borrowing as reckless, he failed to acknowledge the government’s achievements in restructuring debt, improving revenue mobilization, and reducing debt-servicing pressures that crippled past administrations.

The group further highlighted the full repayment of the ₦30 trillion Ways and Means debt inherited from previous governments as one of the administration’s landmark achievements.

“This repayment, announced by the President in his Independence Day broadcast of October 2024, was accompanied by healthy foreign reserves of about $37 billion. The debt-service-to-revenue ratio also fell dramatically from 97 percent to 68 percent, while a $7 billion forex backlog was cleared to stabilize the naira,” it added.

The Media Force asked why Melaye, in his so-called analysis, conveniently ignored these verifiable accomplishments.

The group further noted that Nigeria’s public debt profile, which stood at ₦149.39 trillion as of March 31, 2025, has been transparently managed.

According to the Debt Management Office, much of the increase is due to currency depreciation, not reckless borrowing.

It emphasized that Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio remains at a moderate 40–45 percent, which is far healthier than South Africa’s 70 percent or Ghana’s 90 percent, yet Melaye failed to reference these critical comparative benchmarks.

The group added that Melaye’s attempt to criticize Tinubu on borrowing was even more laughable considering his silence in the past.

“As a senator, he was aligned with administrations that borrowed heavily without transparent repayment plans, yet he never raised his voice.”

The Media Force described this selective outrage as hypocrisy, proof that his comments were politically motivated rather than based on sound financial reasoning.

In addition, the group highlighted the government’s proactive steps to address sector-specific debts, such as the ₦4 trillion refinancing plan approved in August 2025 to clear liabilities in the power sector.

This, it argued, is a pragmatic solution that will stabilize electricity supply and attract investment, unlike the “baseless complaints” Melaye has offered without suggesting any realistic alternative.

On infrastructure, the Media Force reminded Nigerians of the $652 million secured from China Exim Bank to construct a strategic road corridor linking the Lekki Deep Sea Port and the Dangote Refinery to southern trade routes.

According to the group, this demonstrates how the administration is borrowing responsibly, directing funds into projects that yield economic returns, unlike the unaccountable loans of the past which Melaye supported in silence.

It stressed that President Tinubu’s policies have already delivered practical benefits to Nigerians.

“From the rollout of the Nelfund student loan scheme to agro-economic planning aimed at reducing food prices, and a compressed natural gas framework that lowers transport costs, the administration has tied its fiscal policies directly to citizens’ welfare. Melaye’s failure to acknowledge these achievements, they said, renders his analysis hollow,” it noted.

Concluding its statement, the Tinubu Media Force urged Nigerians not to be swayed by what they described as “comedy parading as financial analysis.”

It encouraged President Tinubu to remain focused on his economic reforms and his promise of sustainable prosperity, insisting that the opposition must do more than throw tantrums if they want to be taken seriously in national discourse.

Lagos APC to Melaye: ADC can’t unseat Tinubu in 2027

Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as laughable and delusional, the recent statement credited to Mr. Dino Melaye, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), claiming that the party would produce a candidate capable of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

The party in a statement yesterday by its spokesman, Mr Seye Oladejo,

said: ‘’The statement, coming from a politician whose recent electoral record is nothing short of disastrous, only confirms the growing disconnect between the ADC’s ambition and its political reality. Mr. Melaye — having failed woefully in his own state and recently defected from one platform to another — is hardly in a position to make pronouncements on national leadership or electoral victory.

‘’Let it be made abundantly clear: the ADC lacks the structure, national spread and voter confidence to mount any serious challenge, let alone unseat a performing president.

‘’President Tinubu has, in just over two years, laid the foundation for a transformed Nigeria through decisive economic reforms, inclusive governance and nationwide infrastructural development. His leadership has restored international confidence in Nigeria and rekindled hope among the citizenry — a far cry from the empty rhetoric of the opposition.

‘’The APC is a tested national movement with roots in every ward, local government and state. In contrast, the ADC — a party with no visible impact in any geopolitical zone — cannot be taken seriously when it comes to national leadership.

‘’We urge Nigerians to ignore Melaye’s outbursts and remain focused on the steady progress being achieved under the Renewed Hope Agenda. 2027 will be determined by performance, not noise. President Tinubu is delivering results, and that will speak louder than empty campaign slogans or media theatrics.

‘’The Lagos APC remains fully committed to supporting the President and ensuring that the will of the Nigerian people continues to be respected and upheld.’’

Dino Melaye regrets backing APC, says ADC ready for 2027

Former Kogi senator Dino Melaye has expressed deep regret for his past support of the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling it a serious mistake.

He also voiced confidence in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to produce a formidable candidate capable of defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Friday, Melaye acknowledged his former alignment with the ruling party but made it clear he has since changed course.

“Once I was blind, now I can see. I regret in totality,” he said.

“Just like you confess your sins daily in the Lord’s prayer, I ask for forgiveness. Anyone who has moved with the devil, anyone who has aligned with an unholy tendency, should regret it.”

Looking ahead to 2027, Melaye said the ADC is committed to building a strong and stable party that can present a credible presidential alternative.

“Especially those of us in the ADC, we need to create a comfortable, stable platform. I believe that platform will produce a candidate that will unseat President Ahmed Bola Tinubu in 2027,” he stated.

When asked whether he would back former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the next election, Melaye declined to endorse any individual, saying his focus was on stabilising the party first.

“I will not be talking about a presidential candidate or preference for anybody until we get the party completely stabilised and organise a transparently honest convention,” he explained.

Although Atiku has not officially declared his 2027 ambition, Melaye commended his ongoing political engagement.

“What Atiku is doing is rescuing this country, bringing together men of honour and valour to correct and palliate the manifestation of the APC,” he added.

What I learnt from Kogi Gov poll, by Dino Melaye

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in Kogi State, Senator Dino Melaye, has listed his lessons from the November 11 poll.

He said one key lesson was that Kogi East suffered defeat because they did not collaborate with other zones.

According to him, governorship election has clearly shown Kogi East “more than ever before” that they cannot win the governorship seat without support from other senatorial districts.

Melaye, who represented Kogi West in the 8th Assembly, added that Kogi West should also learn from the last election and listen to the words of wisdom from the elders, “not from commercialised characters who because of their individual and selfish interests created problems for us.”

He spoke during a dinner organised in his honour by members of his campaign organisation in Abuja, on Thursday.

“One of the lessons is that the East now knows more than ever before that they cannot become governor alone.

“You will have to collaborate with another zone to become governor. We went through these elections, irrespective of the outcome, irrespective of betrayals, and so many things,” the PDP candidate said.

Apparently buttressing the government’s stance that Kogi State is peaceful, the former Senator confirmed that he had a very peaceful campaign, insisting that all his tours were devoid of violence.

He said: “Throughout the campaign, not once did we have any gunshot at us. Not even once. We were moving around the state throughout the dead nights. In fact, we even went to Bassa.

“We were driving through that very lonely road on unholy hours of the night. We got to Anyigba at about hours like 12 midnight or 1am and the kind of stories of gunshots, there were no cases of gunshots at us or the kind of killings like what we were told when the SDP visited any other place in the East.

“We didn’t experience any of such, we didn’t lose any soul. This, we are grateful to God.”

He also berated some leaders of the West for not wholeheartedly working with him, saying that they contributed to his defeat.

“There was this very false message that some leaders from the West that one of my leaders said that I wanted to create confusion. Yet some leaders insisted and said this is what they were going to do. Everybody has been served breakfast.

“I want to believe that by the grace of God, we have learnt a lot of lessons from this election. We gave Kogi the type of campaign they have never seen. That’s the truth,” he noted.

Melaye, however, gave himself and his team thumbs up for running “a sophisticated campaign.”

“We had a policy document that took about three months to put together and we had the message and we went round. And by the grace of God, we cannot also say we lost because there was no election.

“By the time we do the statistics, what we spent in this election has never been spent by PDP in the history of Kogi State. We know. I mean, we know that,” he said.

Urging his supporters not to despair, Melaye said they should not lose hope as there would be another opportunity in the near future.

“So, we need not get disillusioned. It’s not to get disenchanted. It’s not to get discouraged.

“It’s for us to hold ourselves together as a political family and say what we lost on the streets, we will regain at the roundabout. And this election also taught a lot of lessons,” he stated.

Dino Melaye: Much brouhaha, poor showing

Senator Dino Melaye is a known politician in Nigerian space. He flew the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the just concluded governorship race in Kogi State.

He is loud and appears to be bold, audacious and brazen in his approach commanding huge following on the social media, a platform he rode on to gain popularity.

Last Saturday’s attempt wasn’t the first time he would contest the governorship seat.

But, he has continued to fail to warm himself into the hearts of majority of the electorates in Kogi. Hence, his abysmal performance during the last Kogi governorship election wasn’t a surprise to keen politicians and observers in the state.

One thing that might have also affected his chances at the poll is his brashness and several controversies in and out of politics.

He is popular for composing songs and showing off his exotic and luxurious cars and homes. He is a dramatic politician, who loves to whim masses’ sentiment through emotional appeal.

Though a supposed lead contender in the last governorship race, he disappointed many of his fans in the Confluence State, as he refused to cast his ballot over allegation of irregularities with the process. That decision made to miss the opportunity to cast his ballot in an election where he was vying to govern the state.

Justifying why he decided to withdraw his right to exercise his franchise, the governorship candidate claimed that there were massive protests at his unit, as voters refused to be accredited, insisting that the result sheets should be made available for the electoral area.

In his usual practice, Melaye chose to indulge in a social media controversy, rather than adding to his tally by coming out to vote.

He revealed in a short video that went viral on social media last Saturday as the off-season election was underway. He alleged: “The result sheets have been filled and tampered with already and people have refused to be accredited; people have refused to vote. They are insisting that the plain result sheets must be returned to agents in accordance with the electoral laws.”
