Bishop sends a heartbreaking message to Diogo Jota’s three young children at the emotional funeral as a footballer is laid to rest with his brother, but there’s no sign of Ronaldo

Friends and family of Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota were united in grief as they gathered for the funeral of the 28-year-old forward.

Distraught loved ones gathered in Portugal for a heartbreaking service to bid a final farewell to the Portuguese star and his brother Andre Silva, 25, who both died following a car accident on Thursday.

Tearful mourners, including Jota’s wife Rute Cardoso, were seen walking through the brothers’ hometown of Gondomar as they made their way into the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar earlier today.

Rute, 28, was dressed all in white, clutching a cream-coloured rose as she placed her hand on her husband’s casket as it was taken into the church. The couple share three young children – Dinis, four, Duarte, two, and baby daughter Mafalda, who is just eight months old.

Only family and friends were allowed inside; however, a live stream with audio of the service, which was heard from  Manuel Linda, the Bishop of Porto, was played outside to thousands of mourners who lined the streets to pay their respects.

Current and former teammates of the Premier League star, including a host of Liverpool and Portuguese players, appeared emotional as they attended the funeral today alongside friends and family.

The group of Liverpool players was led by Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson. The former carried a wreath of Jota’s No.20 shirt, while Robertson held the No.30, which belonged to Silva, a midfielder with Portuguese second-tier side Penafiel.

Footballers Diogo Jota and André Silva have been honoured by their family, friends and teammates at a joint funeral in Portugal.

Jota, 28, was laid to rest alongside his brother, Silva, 25, after they died in a car crash on Thursday.

Hundreds of locals and supporters gathered at the Igreja Matriz in Gondomar, where the brothers are from, on Saturday.

The funeral also brought together huge names from across football, including Jota’s teammates Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson, who were seen carrying floral tributes into the church ahead of the ceremony.

The service was held in Gondomar, a small Portuguese city near Porto, that has been left reeling after the brothers died.

Jota and Silva died at about 00:30 local time in the Spanish province of Zamora.

It is understood they were on the way to take a ferry and return to Liverpool for Jota’s pre-season training when the accident happened.

The Portugal forward had undergone minor surgery and doctors had advised him against flying.

The accident came just 11 days after Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children.

Players from Liverpool FC, who only three months ago were celebrating their Premier League win, arrived at the funeral together.

Watching them walk in line with each other, almost as they do when walking onto the pitch, was an emotional experience.

There was a strong feeling of community, but also a shared sombreness.

Many were visibly upset, with supporters on the other side of the barrier applauding the players. One woman in the crowd shouted towards them as they walked in: “Força!” – strength.

Family and close friends walked into the church in complete silence, many of them with their heads bowed down as the church bell rung.

One person in the procession held up a sign with Silva’s photograph, which read: “Para sempre um de nós.” (Forever one of us.)

So much was the brothers’ impact on football and their local community that some of the guests had to watch the ceremony from outside of the church, often hugging and comforting one another.

Locals and football fans in the crowd watched silently for most of the service, which went on for about an hour.

Many wore football shirts and carried merchandise from the different teams across Portugal and abroad where Jota and Silva, who played for local club Penafiel, spent some time in.

The funerals of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and younger brother, André Filipe Teixeira da Silva, have been scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday in Gondomar, a town near Porto in northern Portugal.

Initially, local priest Father José Manuel Macedo had stated the services would take place at 4 p.m. on Friday. However, the timing was later changed to Saturday morning due to minor paperwork delays related to repatriation, as the family remained in Spain as of Thursday evening.

A wake will be held at São Cosme Chapel, followed by a funeral Mass at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, the town’s main Catholic church. Gondomar holds special meaning for Jota, who began his football journey at a local club there and is believed to have met his wife in the area.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the ceremonies will be private or open to the public.

The brothers’ tragic deaths in a road accident near Zamora, Spain, prompted an outpouring of tributes across the football community. Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, club icon Sir Kenny Dalglish, and current manager Arne Slot were among many who expressed their condolences.

Liverpool players also shared heartfelt messages in Jota’s memory. Alexis Mac Allister wrote on Instagram: “I can’t believe it. I will always remember your smiles, your anger, your intelligence, your companionship and everything that made you who you were. It hurts a lot, we will miss you. Rest in peace, dear Diogo.”

Dominik Szoboszlai added: “Words cannot describe how heartbroken and devastated we are. Your smile, your love for the game will never be forgotten. We will miss you so much, but you will stay with us forever, on and off the pitch. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Rest in peace, brother.”

As the football world mourns, Saturday’s service will offer a final opportunity to say goodbye to the beloved Portuguese international and his brother.

Diogo Jota: Tributes for ‘exceptional boy’ who died in a car crash at 28

Diogo Jota was quickly hailed by the Liverpool support as “better than (Luis) Figo” and the shocking death of the Portuguese international yesterday has left the English champions in mourning.

The 28-year-old died on Thursday alongside his younger brother Andre after their vehicle veered off a motorway in northern Spain before bursting into flames.

A product of the Pacos de Ferreira academy on the outskirts of his native Porto, Jota made his name and played the majority of his professional career in the Premier League.

His precocious talent caught the eye of Atletico Madrid who snapped him up in 2016 but he never played a game for the Spanish giants.

Instead, after a loan spell at Porto, Jota was among the first wave of Portuguese talent parachuted into England at then second-tier Wolves due to the club’s connections with super-agent Jorge Mendes.

Jota’s goals helped fire Wolves from the Championship to the quarter-finals of the Europa League in just three seasons.

That caught the eye of Liverpool, who splashed out a £45 million ($62 million) transfer fee for the versatile forward even in the midst of the economic meltdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

“Exceptional player, exceptional boy,” said former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp during Jota’s early days at Anfield. “He has everything that a Liverpool player in this squad needs.”

Jota took little time to deliver some return on Liverpool’s investment, becoming the first player in the club’s history to score in his first four home games.

Once supporters were back in the stands after the pandemic, Jota’s popularity was reflected in a chant proclaiming him to be better than Portugal legend Figo, who played for Real Madrid and Barcelona during his decorated career.

He was a key part of the side that won the League Cup and FA Cup in 2021⁄22, narrowly missing out on the Premier League and Champions League for what would have been an unprecedented quadruple.

In total, Jota struck 65 times in 182 appearances for the Reds, the last of which won the Merseyside derby against Everton in April to edge Liverpool ever closer to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title.

But not for the first time in Liverpool’s rich history, tragedy has struck to overshadow triumph.

Jota’s last public act as a player on Merseyside was taking part in the trophy parade through the city, which will be remembered for a car ploughing into the crowds, injuring 109 people.

Fans began laying shirts, scarves and flowers in tribute at Anfield, where there is a permanent memorial to the 97 fans killed in the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 which still leaves a scar on the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo was among those to express his disbelief that his international team-mate has passed.

“It makes no sense,” the five-time Ballon d’Or winner posted on social media. “Rest in Peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.”

Ronaldo and Jota, who won 49 caps for his country, had been part of the Portugal team that won the Nations League last month.

Jota then wed his long-time partner and mother of his three children, Rute Cardoso, less than two weeks ago.

“Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all team-mates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in his community,” said Portuguese football federation Pedro Proenca.

Off the field, Jota was well-known for his passion for video games and even had his own esports team Luna Esports.

During the pandemic, he won a Premier League competition among players on the FIFA game, defeating future team-mate Trent Alexander Arnold in the final.

His passing was described by Liverpool as an “unimaginable loss” not just of a star player but as a newlywed husband and father of three.
