  • APC: Eight guber aspirants adopt direct primaries in Zamfara

A total of eight front line governorship aspirants in Zamfara State including the Deputy Governor, Ibrahim Wakala and a former governor, Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi have adopted direct primaries for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The aspirants urged the national leadership of APC to appoint a caretaker committee for the state.

The aspirants at the end of an emergency meeting held in Abuja also threw their weights behind the suit instituted by the faction of the Senator Kabir Garba Marafa of the party against the faction of the state governor, Abdul’aziz Yari.

A resolution by the aspirants including Senator Kabir Garba Marafa, Minster of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, Rep Aminu Sani Jaji, Engineer Abu Magaji, Dauda Lawal and Mohammed Sagir Hamidu, endorsed the court case challenging the legality of the May 2018 congress of the APC in Zamfara State.

The aspirants resolved to abide by the court order of the Federal High Court (10), Abuja which directed that both Yari and Marafa factions “should maintain the status quo and should not take any steps that would render nugatory the subject matter of the litigation”.

They insisted that only the conduct of direct Primaries in the State would demonstrate obedience to the directive given by the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The resolution signed by the aspirants reads: “That the National leadership of the Party ought to have involved the members of the G8 Governorship aspirants in the recruitment of the Ward, Local Government and State electoral organizing Committee members for the conduct of the direct Primaries in the State.

” That the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC is hereby urged to choose the course for a peaceful, free and successful APC Primaries and general elections in Zamfara State.

“That the NWC approves and communicate to all Parties concerned that the direct mode of primaries has been decided for Zamfara State APC under the guidance of a caretaker committee especially appointed for the State until the Court case is finally determined.

“The common resolutions of the 8 Governorship aspirants should be communicated to the Attorney for further transmission of these resolutions to the APC National Working Committee. A copy of the letter of complaint of G7 also is attached for reference and action by the lawyers.”

  • Direct primaries: Smart politics, good for governance

Much has been made of the recent insistence of our party, the All Progressives Party (APC), on direct primaries as the preferred format for electing flag bearers for the upcoming state and national elections slated for 2019.

While a lot has been said in the sphere of preference by individual stakeholders, not much reference has been made to the ground-breaking and earth-shattering reforms to our politics that this signals from our leadership to the generality of our party members and Nigerians.

First, it must be clarified that our party’s constitution accorded the National Working Committee the right to freely determine which method to elect our party’s flag bearers.Based on our constitution, this can be direct (by all party members), indirect (by delegates chosen by party members and including statutory delegates based on prior political office(s) held) and consensus.

Hence, the preference for direct primary as stated by our president and supported by the National Caucus as well as the National Working Committee is not only constitutional but also just.

Secondly, the All Progressives Congress is toeing the path of internal party democracy and empowering its members as the majority party to make their voices heard in who represent the party at the polls. There is no doubt, that given prior experiences especially in the past three years when fair-weather friends of our party hijacked our structures knowing fully well that the party was popular with the people, it was high time the party reformed and insist on choosing only loyal party members to bear its flag in 2019.

Thirdly, directly electing representatives ensures the party can run shadow elections and determine who is truly popular among the people. It ensures only truly popular and/or hardworking candidates, who value the people they seek to represent -and such value is reciprocated with votes- are able to emerge.

The case for direct primaries is that it is generally less prone to manipulation by godfathers and sitting governors (especially), this is true and everyone including our governors must celebrate this.

Speaking about democracy, there is no doubt that a party that cannot exhibit internal democracy is bound to die. This was what killed the opposition that gloried in fixed elections, godfatherism and “turn-by-turnism” and unity lists which are products of smoke filled backroom deals even at their last convention among others; all processes that disenfranchise the unconnected, women and the youths.

APC should lead by example, and is already doing so thanks to the president, vice president, our party chairman, and other leaders who sacrificed so much to build the party. Primaries will become fairer, less expensive, less contentious and more accessible to all, if we pursue the direct primaries option, and ensure Nigerian’s hope in our democracy is restored.

I should know as I have gone through it myself. A situation where hard work, popularity, passion and commitment does not count, a situation where only what count is the use of money, security forces, and some evil and devilish oath taking is employed to compel some party fat cats to vote against their conscience does not augur well for our democracy.

A situation where a governor and his appointed executive in the state decide who is able to get nomination form and who it should not be sold to is no democracy. A situation where a governor is instructing the headquarters of the party not to sell nomination form to a sitting senator to return to the senate cannot in any way be described as a democracy.

This is no fiction. Our temporary wielders of power are making this and other ridiculous anti-democratic moves. Members who didn’t support particular governors at previous primary elections are being told they cannot contest and therefore nomination forms should not be sold to them. Stories are being told of governors and their wives putting forward their relatives and maids as consensus candidates for our party, thereby depriving loyal and committed party members’ tickets to represent us at the general election.

But thank God, unlike in the past our present chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is resisting the anti-democratic forces and he has the backing of our president and vice president both of whom have insisted they want all party members to vote in their primary elections. Some governors are also toeing this party of honour. The governor of Kano needed no convincing when he, immediately the decision was made, consulted the party hierarchy and announced Kano will go with the people and the party.

Our governors should demonstrate leadership in the quest to strengthen our democracy. No one is elected for life. The governors of today will be become the ex-governors of tomorrow. Those who are Alpha and Omega and deciders of our fate today should ask the governors of yesterday how they are faring in the hands of their anointed godsons of then. Many of them can no longer visit their states without scores of security personnel; afraid not of the people per se but of the man they forced into power against the wish of the people. If a just system is not put in place the governor of today will become victims of an unjust system tomorrow.

If for four or eight years you have presided in your state, appointed people as commissioners, board members, dished out favours and ruled over the airwaves and your voice has been the loudest in the entire state, why for God sake will you be afraid of subjecting yourself or your anointed to a popularity test among members of your party who will in any case still be called upon to come and vote at the general election?

Why must party members be good only to be herded to rally venues to chant your praise songs, dance and break the head of opposition members when there are fights and yet their votes are not good enough to nominate you or your favourites to bear the party flag at general elections?

We must be embarrassed when party leaders argue against registering new party members. What manner of a democrat will not want to recruit more members into his party?

If general elections were meant to determine the person who can best serve a constituency, then a direct primary in my opinion will elect the best person who will be most capable of winning a popular vote. This will save the winner the embarrassment of having to be looking for billions of naira to bribe voters including our party members as we have recently witnessed.

Thank God our leaders, President Muhammadu Buhari, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Aremo Olusegun Osoba and Chief Bisi Akande among others have publicly expressed their believe and commitment to empowering our teeming party members by getting them involved directly in electing our party flag bearers. Their thoughts and mandate is being executed by the unflinching commitment to same idea by Chairman Oshiomhole. This will be an unmistakable legacy.

As a matter of fact and of history, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Aremo Segun Osoba would not have smelled being governors if election by delegates were used at their primaries in 1999. Most of the leaders of the party then railed and worked against their candidacy. It is an irony that the same leaders who were bent on making God’s work impossible later benefited immensely from their regimes.

Just look back to 2014. Imagine for once, majority of party leaders across the country had not decided on President Muhammadu Buhari as APC candidate, the man who bear dollars would have torpedoed his victory. Where would that have led us today? Party delegates were running from one hotel to the other in Lagos chasing dollars. Buhari had no kobo to give. If our leaders had not seen the danger this portend and appealed to the delegates not to vote for dollar but character, today would have been tragic for our party and our nation. We dodged the bullet then, but there is no guarantee we will dodge the bullet again.

  • Kano APC adopts direct primaries

The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in Kano state has endorsed the adoption of direct primaries for selecting candidates that will fly the party’s flag in the 2019 elections.

Rising from a meeting held on Wednesday, the state Executive Committee of the party said the decision stands to improve the stock of the APC in the coming election as well as other elections.

In a press statement signed by the State Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas Sanusi, said APC will adopt direct primaries for selecting candidates for the Presidency, governorship, National Assembly (Senate and House of Representatives) as well as the state Legislative elections.

The decision was endorsed by the State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the two Senators (Sanator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya and Senator Barau Jibrin) 13 members of the House of Representatives led by the Chief Whip, Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, 33 members of the state House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Rt Hon. Kabiru Al Hassan Rurum, 53 state Executive members of the Committee of the party, 44 elected chairmen of the party and 44 local government party chairmen, as well as secretaries of the party in the 44 LGs.

The statement said direct primary for selecting candidates stands to imbue greater confidence among members of the party, guarantees openness in governance and ensure free and fair election.

Abbas Sanusi pointed out that the party in the state believes that direct primaries give more transparency to political participation and regaining the confidence that has been lost over time as the process of selecting candidates gets increasingly mired in secrecy.

While calling for the support of party members, the chairman also implored them to always be peaceful and law abiding citizens.

  • APC governors, state chairmen oppose direct primaries ahead of NEC

Ahead of the primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the governors and state chairmen are opposed to direct primaries – the party’s antidote against imposition of candidates. They prefer indirect primaries.

Key stakeholders in the party, including some leaders and members of the National Assembly, have opted for direct primary because, in their view, it will give members a say on the choice of their representatives.

There were fears that the desire for indirect primaries by the governors was designed to give them “total” control and to determine those who will be candidates for various elective posts.

In an August 17 letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC only indicated that it might adopt indirect or direct system for the presidential primary on September 19.

The governors and the state chairmen are said to have communicated their preference for indirect primary to National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole.

The chairman and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) have however left the final decision to the  National Executive Committee (NEC), which will meet on Thursday  in Abuja.

A source in the party, who spoke in confidence, said: “There is a fresh challenge in the party because the governors are opposed to direct primaries. Some of them seeking second term in office want indirect primaries to make it easier to get the ticket.

“A few others completing second term prefer indirect primaries to be able to impose their favourites as candidates for various elective offices.

“The governors, who have influenced state chairmen of the party, are claiming that the time is too short for direct primaries. They are also nursing fears that direct primaries could lead to crises, including violent primaries.”

It was however learnt that many senators, members of the House of Representatives and Houses of Assembly and governorship aspirants are worried that the governors have been scheming for indirect primaries “to hijack the process.”

A senator said: “The governors are out to seize the process and give tickets to their cronies. To get quality candidates for 2019 polls, we have to check these governors who want to determine those to be APC flag bearers.

“Most leaders of the party have opted for direct primaries in view of the huge success the model recorded in Osun State.

“Popular candidates were not given the opportunity to emerge in the past because the indirect primaries were turned to merchandise.

“Like the leadership of the party said, it will ensure participation of all registered members. It will be a departure of what obtained in the past, which was monetised.

“We will resist any plot by the governors to insist on indirect primaries. We learnt that they have forced the state chairmen to adopt indirect primaries.”

APC Acting National Publicity Secretary Yekini Nabena said: “All these issues will be tabled at the NEC meeting. Why not wait till after the meeting on Thursday?”

Oshiomhole on July 17 highlighted the benefits of direct primaries. He said: “We have decided that in order to ensure popular participation, and to deepen democracy in Osun State, in-line with the provision of our party constitution, which allows for either direct or indirect primary, we have resolved that the governorship election primary in Osun State will be conducted on the basis of direct primary.

“What that means is that every card carrying member of our party will participate in the process of nominating the flag bearer of the party. This, for us, is the most democratic way to conduct election and is in line with what our critical stakeholders from that part of the country wants and we are quite happy to oblige.”

Oshiomhole said the direct option was to allow more party members to “participate in the process of nominating candidates and to remove issues of corruption or monetising the processes.”

He said direct primary would also “give party members a sense of ownership of the outcome of the exercise”.

  • Direct primaries: Faleke lauds APC leaders

    •Party leaders endorse lawmaker

THE direct primary adopted by the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos to pick the party’s candidates for the 2019 general election will deepen internal democracy, House of Representatives member James Faleke said yesterday.

Faleke, who is representing Ikeja Federal Constituency, commended the APC leadership for the courage to take such a decision.

He spoke in a remark after his endorsement for another term by party leaders, including APC National Zonal Women Leader (Southwest) and Executive Director of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) Mrs. Kemi Nelson, and chairmen of the three councils making up the federal constituency.

According to the leaders, Faleke has offered effective and quality representation in the Green Chamber and deserved another term to solidify his achievements.

“The experience of Abiodun James Faleke is highly needed to ensure that Ikeja Federal Constituency is effectively represented at the National Assembly,” the stakeholders said.

Their endorsement came after due consultations with constituents and party leaders.

Faleke, who met with stakeholders, had taken advantage of the National Assembly’s recess to present his scorecard.

The lawmaker urged party faithful to buy into the forthcoming registration of members by APC, even as he pleaded with them to register with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
