  • Man in court for alleged murder

    A 20-year-old man, Basit Yusuf, was on Wednesday arraigned at a Magistrates’ Court in Ado-Ekiti for allegedly killing Saliu Jamiu.

    Yusuf, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

    The police prosecutor, Insp. Monica Ikebuilo, told the court that the accused committed the offence in Ado-Ekiti on Nov. 7.

    She alleged that the accused had earlier threatened to kill Jamiu if he failed to procure a motorcycle for him.

    Ikebuilo said that some days after the threat, the body of the deceased was found in a canal in the Odo-Ado neighbourhood of Ado-Ekiti.

    “The accused was later then apprehended by the police when he tried to escape,’’ she said.

    She said that the offences contravened Section 324 and 319 (1) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The prosecutor then urged the Court to remand the accused in prison custody, pending legal advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The plea of the accused was not taken.

    In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs Omolola Akosile, ordered that the accused should be remanded in prison and adjourned the case until Dec.13 for mention.

  • Man, 70, remanded in Prison over rape of teenager

    For allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl, Kayode Oshakoya, is to spend the next 25 days in prison, an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court ruled on Thursday in Lagos.

    Oshakoya, 70, was remanded in Kirikiri Prison pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr P. E. Nwaka, directed that the case file should be sent to the DPP for advice.

    The accused, who resides at No 25, Ibrayumu St., Bariga, Lagos, is being tried for rape.

    Earlier, Police Prosecutor Christopher John, told the court that the accused committed the offence with others at large on June 18, at his residence.

    John said that the girl went to visit the accused, who is a family friend in his house, saying that on getting there, the accused had an unlawful sexual intercourse with her.

    He said that the girl narrated everything that Oshakoya did to her to her father immediately he returned from work.

    “The accused was arrested and handed over to the Police,’’ John said.

    The offence contravened Section 262 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The case has been fixed for July 30 for mention.

    Man, remanded in prison over attempted murder

    An Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court  on Thursday remanded in prison, a 23-year-old man, Musa Idoga, over alleged attempted murder.
    The accused, who lives in Isaba area of Ikole-Ekiti, is facing a charge of attempted murder.The Chief Magistrate, Mr Idowu Ayenimo, who gave the ruling, directed that the accused should be kept behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Bankole Olasunkanmi, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 31 in Ikole-Ekiti.

    Olasunkanmi alleged that there was a fight between the accused and the victim, Mrs Aisha Adamu, a pregnant woman, and ‎in the process, her husband joined in fighting the accused.
    “The victim wanted to separate them but the accused cut off one of her hands.”
     
    The offence contravened Section 320 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.
     
    The case has been fixed for May 19 for hearing.
  • Job seeker ‘rapes’ groundnut seller

    A job seeker, Muselium Dele, was yesterday charged with allegedly raping a 19-year-old groundnut seller at an Itire Magistrate’s Court, Surulere, Lagos State.

    Dele, 25, who resides at Lawanson in the Surulere area, is also being tried for alleged conspiracy.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Olakunle Shonibare, told the court that the accused, with others at large, committed the offences on September 18 at 45, Anjorin Street, Lawanson.

    He said the accused lured the teenager into his apartment under the pretext of buying groundnut and raped her.

    The offences, Shonibare noted, contravene Sections 258 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Section 258 prescribes life imprisonment for offenders.

    The accused, however, pleaded innocence and the Magistrate, Mrs A. O. Gbajumo, granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She adjourned the case till November 14 and directed that the case file should be forwarded to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
