  • Director hails Rotary for supporting health care

The Medical Director of General Hospital, Ifako-Ijaiye, Dr. Olushola Amure, has hailed the Rotary Club of Omole-Golden for its passion for health care.

He said the club had contributed a lot to the development of health care, adding that it proved this by laying the foundation of the hospital’s neo-natal building.

Amure, who spoke yesterday when the Rotary Club visited the hospital, also praised it for donating phototherapy machines and incubators to the neo-natal ward.

He said: “The General Hospital, Ifako-Ijaiye was recently given the award of the best hospital in neo-natal care in Lagos State because of the support by Rotary Club of Omole-Golden.

“Another history is being made today with the foundation laying of the neo-natal building by the club.

“On behalf of Health Commissioner Dr. Jide Idris, I thank the club members for their kind gesture. The government should also be commended for providing more health care facilities. Other organisations should emulate Rotary Club of Omole-Golden.”

The President, Mrs. Ibironke Alaba, said the club has donated over 10 incubators and phototherapy machines to the hospital.

She said the hospital needed a new neo-natal clinic because there was no space in the neo-natal ward to accommodate more incubators and phototherapy machines.

Alaba said the club would donate another incubator to the hospital.

District Governor Rotary International District 9110 Nigeria Kola Sodipo urged the hospital workers to join Rotary Club “so that we can together put smiles on people’s faces.”

  • Why we settled for AAC candidate in Rivers – APC

Director, Strategic Communications of the Tonye Cole Campaign Organization, Prince Tonye T.J.T Princewill has said that the determination to vote out the Rivers state governor, Nyelson Wike necessitated the decision by leaders of the APC in the state to back the candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) for Saturday’s governorship election.

In a statement made available to The Nation in Abuja, Princewill frowned at the exclusion of the APC and its candidate from the election even though the Supreme Court was yet to make any pronouncement on the faith of the party.

He believed that Governor Wike’s overbearing influence has ensured that the APC is denied justice, adding that only the exit of Wike from the state will guarantee justice for the APC.

He said: “Even though I can not hide my disappointment at the non-inclusion of APC Rivers state candidates on the ballot come Saturday, I too must approve the decision reached by our leadership to support Sowore’s AAC in our upcoming Governorship election. With the way things are hot in Rivers state, a double AC may just be what we need.

“Seriously though, “Wike must go” and “Power must rotate”, were what attracted me to this cause. It was not candidate-specific then and it is not candidate-specific now. Tonye Cole and the other APC candidates will still have their day in court. The apex court has not yet spoken and since we’re advised not to speak while eating, Rivers state without Wike will allow the judges to speak even more freely.

“The injustice of exclusion like this will be written about for years to come and the actors and the role each one played will be dissected by law professionals and the rest of us, the world over. It’s nothing short of a disgrace. Justice for me is the annulling of this election, I still stand by that. But since justice has been denied us for far too long, we have opted to do what is available to us now; Vote out Wike. For as long as we all await justice, let us do it with a different person sitting in Brick House.

“That is where Biokpo Awara comes in. I urge all those who love us to vote for him and all those who despise Wike’s politics to do same. I must advise you all to do so peacefully. Election Violence is not our friend. He is Wike’s brother. And this Saturday, both Wike and his brother will meet their match when the security agencies ensure your votes count, free from harassment and free from intimidation.

Oyibo man talk say; “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Let us hold this one first before all our candidates come out from that bush.

Vote Biokpo Awara. Vote AAC. Remember the motto and also the logo. Hands up. Let’s take it back from those who want to keep taking us back.

  • ‘Oil marketers cheat Nigerians by N198,500 per truck of product sold’

Director, Weights and Measures Department, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr Mohammed  Sidi, says that oil dealers have been cheating Nigerians of N198,500 per truck sold.

Sidi said this in Abuja on Wednesday during a surveillance activity of the department to some fuel stations.

He said that the action was to ensure that all commercial transactions involving the use of weights and measures were accurate, fair and legal.

“Every weighing equipment in all sectors of the economy, whether oil and gas or non- oil and gas must be up to the required standard, ” Sidi said.

At Forte Oil Station, Maitama, opposite Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, the team found that customers lost 0.5 litres of fuel in every 20 litres they bought.

The team sealed three of the dispensing pumps and collected their certificate of clarification.

“This is because the officials of Weights and Measures discovered that for every 20 litres of fuel dispensed to customers of the filling station, not less than 0.5 litres was found to be a shortage to customers.

“We have 33 litres in a truck and when for every 20 litres, it is short with 0.5  litres which means that in a truck they will be making a profit of N198,500 per truck,” Sidi said.

The team also visited Forte Oil station at Ibrahim Babangida Boulevard, opposite National Universities Commission and found that customers were cheated by the same quantity of fuel.

The team sealed three dispensing pumps for oil and one for diesel.

At Dan Oil on Airport Road, the team found that customers lost 0.6 litres for every 20 litres bought and sealed three petrol pumps and one diesel pump.

At the filling station, the attendants quickly adjusted some pumps immediately they sighted the officials.

The managers at all the stations refused to comment.

The team also visited Mabushi District cement depot and certified bags of cement found in the place as having the right quantity.

The bags of cement checked were Bua, Dangote and Sokoto cement products.

The Chairman of the depot Mr Maxwell Nnamani said that the depot always maintained standards and urged other dealers to do same.

Nnamani said that although the issue of re-bagging had been a problem in the industry, it was being addressed.

The team also visited the 7UP Company at Idu Industrial Area to measure different products.

At ShopRite mall at the Jabi Lake, the team expressed satisfaction after measuring different products.

“We are happy because there is a lot of improvement from the non-oil sectors compared to what we witnessed before,’ Sidi said.

He appealed to members of the public report any suspected discrepancies by products’ dealers to the department to enable it to do its job better. (NAN)

Fed Govt arraigns director, brother over undeclared assets

The Federal Government yesterday arraigned a Director of Finance and Account in the Federal Ministry of Works, Power and Housing, Ibrahim Tumsah and his brother, Tijani Tumsah, before a Federal High Court, Abuja for allegedly refusing to declare their assets.

Ibrahim and Tijani (Vice Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on North East) were arraigned on a two-count charge filed by the Okoi Obono-Obla-led Special Presidential Investigation Panel on the Recovery of Public Property

Tijani is also said to be a former Interim National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Before yesterday, the Obono-Obla panel had on December 6, 2017 obtained an ordered of interim forfeiture on property allegedly owned by the two brothers.

Justice Muawiyah Idris of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Apo gave the order attaching 86 luxurious vehicles, four houses and a quarry plant in Abuja, all of which the panel allegedly seized from the two defendants.

After pleading not guilty to the charge yesterday, trial judge, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, granted the defendants’ bail application at N20 million and two sureties.

Prosecution lawyer Festus Keyamo (SAN) did not object to the bail applications by defence lawyers – Abdul Mohammed (for Ibrahim) and Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN) – for Tijani.

The court, which adopted the bail conditions agreed upon by the prosecution and the defence lawyers, said the sureties must either be a businessman or a public civil servant not below the rank of grade level 15.

In addition, the sureties, the judge said, must have landed properties anywhere in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The defendants are to deposit their international passports with the court and should not travel out of the country without the permission of the court.

Justice Dimgba warned that he will order the defendants’ remand in Kuje prison should they fail to comply with the stated conditions within three days.

He adjourned to March 1, 2018.
