S’Court verdict: Why I visited Tinubu in Abuja, Diri reveals

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has said as a sitting governor, there was nothing unusual in his visit to President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa on Thursday, October 26.

Speaking at the Igbedi community in Constituency 2 of Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of the state during the visit of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship campaign train, Diri said he was at liberty to congratulate President Tinubu following the Supreme Court verdict on the presidential election.

A statement by his spokesperson and member of the Publicity Directorate of the Bayelsa PDP Governorship Campaign Council, Daniel Alabrah, quoted the governor as saying he was at the Presidential Villa to discuss serious state matters with the president, whom he said attended to the issues positively.

He contended that he was not disturbed by the speculations and lies of the opposition, whom he said became jittery because of the visit, stressing that propaganda had been the hallmark of their politics.

He said the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 11 governorship election remained disqualified based on the first amended list of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and urged the Bayelsa electorate not to waste their votes on a party that is not on the ballot.

Diri, who noted he was not in Igbedi to campaign, said the projects of his administration in the community were evident.

The governor assured the people that during his second tenure, he would construct a road linking Igbedi to Kaiama, which would create better access to and from the Bayelsa International Airport from the East-West road and the Delta State axis.

Diri said: “Yesterday (Thursday), I was in Abuja and most of you saw the video trending. The opposition is now jittery and is telling lies. Of course, that is in their character.

“As a sitting governor, there is a sitting president and I do not owe them any explanation about my visit to the President.

“If the Supreme Court affirms the president of the country, as a sitting governor I reserve all the rights to visit him. But beyond that, I went for very serious state business and I can tell you that Mr. President attended to all the issues I raised.

“Those whose names have been delisted by amendment number one of INEC can no longer sleep. They will continue to have sleepless nights.

“In our second tenure, the other road that will be important to Bayelsa and even the people of Delta State and for the use of our airport will be to connect Igbedi to Kaiama. That will be the next project we will embark upon in our next tenure.”

Also speaking, the wife of the governor, Gloria Diri, who is a native of Igbedi, thanked the people of the community for the rousing welcome accorded her husband and the support given him over the years and urged them not to relent.

The governor inaugurated an internal road in the community and also observed a minute’s silence in honour of Mr. Peremobowei Tukuwei, who died in a tragic boat mishap on Wednesday while the APC campaigned in Nembe Local Government Area.

Tukuwei was the party’s state campaign council media and publicity director.

Bayelsa poll: Diri’s aide dumps PDP campaign, joins Sylva’s camp

A Senior Special Assistant to Bayelsa state governor on special, Comrade Charles Kurobo, has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing hunger as his major reason for dumping the Peoples Democratic Party’s campaign train.

Kurubo, who is also the Chairman, Niger Delta Ex-agitators’ Leadership Forum, First Phase, Bayelsa State chapter, said he was back home to the APC family before he would die of hunger as a political appointee of Governor Douye Diri.

He stated that he had no alternative but to speak the truth and restore his reputation. He explained that his family members, dependents, and acquaintances had lost faith in him due to his inability to fulfill his responsibilities.

He said this was despite his employment within the acclaimed Prosperity Government led by Diri.

Kurubo said: “My position as a serving SSA to the Governor on Special Duties is supposed to have a positive impact on the lives of those around me, especially my immediate family.

“But unfortunately, recharging my phone for effective communication would have been a great challenge if not for the timely intervention of other critical stakeholders from our Niger Delta region.

“It is such a pity that with the level of hunger and starvation deliberately created by Governor Douye Diri, the administration still musters the courage to garner the kind of support I see and perceive from some Bayelsans!

“Does it mean we have not learnt enough? Or are we yet to understand that we will be heading into another four years of real hardship which will be worse than what we are currently experiencing or even more? Where is our sense of pride?

“We have never been a myopic set of people, we will never be and should not be seen as such and that is why I want Bayelsa State and its people to know that the way to go is not Senator Diri’s direction.

“If we must survive and develop ourselves to survive and succeed as a people, we must do the needful. We may have made mistakes with choices in the past but that’s normal because we are humans and our ability to learn from past mistakes helps us redirect our present and guide us to determine our future and the prospective development of our state and its people.”

The ex-militant leader challenged any appointee, who would be bold and courageous enough to come out to prove him wrong, stressing that apart from the monthly token offered to appointees under the Diri administration, which is less than what commercial tricyclists make in a month, their lives are better or worse.

He also challenged any individual who is not directly related to Diri, whose life has been transformed as a result of any human capital development initiative of the Governor to come out and counter him with proofs of his or her improved lifestyle since 2020.

He stated: “On behalf of my family, the APC leadership from the least unit of the state to the hierarchy, I enjoin all of us from all works of life to rise to the occasion and take up the challenge to the effect that Chief Timipre Sylva return elected come November 11, 2023.”

    • Rousing welcome, chieftaincy for governor in Ogbia

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri yesterday painted a picture of the helmsman the Southsouth state deserves. The state deserves a focused and sincere leader and not a deceptive leader.

He said his performance stood him shoulder high above his All Progressives Congress (APC) opponent in the November 11 governorship election, Timipre Sylva.

It was at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign in Ogbia Local Government Area. Diri’s campaign train stopped over at  Yiba-Ama (Oruma), Otuasega, Emeyal, Kolo Town and Elebele communities.

According to him, Sylva, who was governor for five and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources for almost four years, made no impact in the state.

Diri, who described himself as a disciple of the late Senator Melford Okilo, rated his administration high in reversing the rural-urban drift through  several developmental initiatives.

The governor said that he had fulfilled most of his 2019 campaign promises and that he deserves re-election for continuity.

Diri got a rousing welcome across Ogbia communities,  where large crowd of party faithful, including royal fathers,  chiefs and party supporters trooped out to receive him.

Accompanied by his wife, Dr. Gloria, and his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Diri appreciated the people for their support.

Speaking at the rally in Kolo, the caretaker committee chairman of Ogbia council, Mizodome Ibu, thanked the governor for the projects in the area and promised to ensure that the PDP records massive votes in the area.

Highpoint of the campaign was the decoration of Diri and his deputy by the paramount ruler of Elebele community, His Royal Highness David Osene Osene and his council of chiefs with the chieftaincy titles of Ogimamema 1 and Ogimamama II respectively.

Also scores of defectors were received into the PDP at the rallies.

On why the electorate should vote for him, he listed  Sylva’s ‘sins’, Diri claimed that the APC standard bearer did not do much for the state when he had the opportunity.

He alleged that the promised airport at Zarama, the Brass fertilizer plant and the COVID-19 hospital projects never saw the light of the day.

Diri alleged: “Timipre Sylva is a man you cannot trust. He displaced all those he promised that he would give the governorship ticket and turned around to become the candidate himself.

“A man who said a road from Yenagoa to Nembe was not economically viable; a man who proposed an airport but the site was turned into a ‘seaport’ after sinking in millions of naira of the state’s resources.

“When the immediate past governor built a very good airport, Sylva said it was a seaport. But today, he uses the same airport.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, he deceived me as governor. He said, let us go and inaugurate a COVID-19 hospital at Igbogene; in my innocence I followed him; We did the foundation-laying and that was the end of the project.”

“A man who said he was building the Oloibiri Oil Museum but after deceiving the whole country with a groundbreaking ceremony, the site was abandoned and it is now overtaken by weeds.

“We have tried him, we have tested him and he has failed. We have had many governors in this state but only one governor has been stoned.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial campaign for the re-election of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo hit Ekeremor Constituency 2 with impressive turn out of supporters in the various communities.

The rallies in Tamogbene, Peretorugbene, Ndoro and Ekeremor main town were turned into carnivals by the excited supporters.

At Tamogbene, Governor Diri in company with his running mate and Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, assured them of a landing jetty and internal roads while at Ndoro, he gave them hope that the Ekeremor-Agge road would connect the community.

The governor said the completed section of Sagbama-Ekeremor road had opened up more riverine communities for new economic opportunities.

At the grand rally in Ekeremor main town, different speakers including Senator James Manager, member representing Ekeremor Constituency 2, Hon. Living Mitin, Chief Solomon Agwana, State PDP Chairman, Commissioner for Transport, Grace Ekiottene, Dr. Boyelayefa Debekeme.

Bayelsa poll: Diri’s re-election will be smooth sail, says Dickson

The immediate past governor of Bayelsa state, Seriake Dickson, has thrown his weight behind his successor, Douye Diri, saying the latter’s re-election would be a smooth sail.

Dickson, the Senator representing Bayelsa West, had previously been silent and had not joined Diri’s second term campaigns since it started three weeks ago.

The former governor put to rest speculation of a rift between him and Diri on Thursday, October 19, when he hosted his successor at a colourful and well-attended event at his Toru-Orua country home in Sagbama local government area of the state.

Dickson said the coast was clear for Diri to be elected for a second term while endorsing him and his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

The former governor applauded Diri and his campaign team for relentlessly mobilising support and strengthening the political base of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that there was no opposition in the state to contend with him in the November 11 governorship election.

Dickson said: “I congratulate the Director-General of the Diri governorship campaign and his team for doing a good job by galvanising the base of our party.

“I can see that the coast is clear. From the eyes of an experienced hunter, l can see that your current hunt will be very successful.”

He also expressed conviction that the governor and his running mate’s second tenure would be successful.

The former governor, who said Diri’s visit was a demonstration of the fact that he had not forgotten where he started his political journey, however, explained that his absence from the governorship campaigns was deliberate.

Dickson said: “When l endorsed Senator Diri in 2019, all hell broke loose. But today, l am very happy that the Diri they said l imposed on them has become a good product for Bayelsa.

“The visit of the governor and his entourage demonstrates that a man who starts hunting in the thick forest, started from somewhere and this visit shows that he had not forgotten the road from where he got into that thick forest.”

He called on political parties, their candidates and supporters not to breach the prevailing peace in the state because after the election they would remain as one people.

In his remarks, Governor Diri appreciated Dickson for his support over the years.

He said: “For the benefit of anybody who is in doubt about the relationship between me and Senator Dickson, l want to make it clear that there is no rift between us. I am sure beyond reasonable doubt that he is with me.”

Diri said his administration had continued to expand the PDP family, which according to him, had gone beyond a political contest because it had brought back most members that left the party.

He also thanked the Pere (King) of the Tarakiri clan and the people of Bayelsa West senatorial district, adding that he was sure of victory in the zone on November 11.

At the event, a minute silence was observed in honour of the late Ekeremor PDP Caucus chairman, Chief Thompson Okorotie.

You can’t take Dickson’s glory on Bayelsa road, Sylva blasts Diri

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa state, Timipre Sylva, has hailed a former governor of the state, Senator Seriake Dickson for taking a road to Ekeremor local government area after over 40 years.

Sylva, who was cheered by the crowd when he drove on the road to Ekeremor for his ongoing campaign, said it was abominable for the incumbent governor, Douye Diri, to be trying to take credit for the road constructed by his predecessor.

He said: “We are grateful to former Governor Dickson for executing this very vital role. He has written his name in Gold and left a legacy that would speak for him through time.

“We must give credit to who deserves it and that accolade must go to Dickson. It is a sign of ingratitude for Governor Douye Diri to appropriate the road to himself.”

Sylva also hailed the people of Ekeremor for their overwhelming warm reception when he campaigned in the area ahead of the November 11 election.

He wondered why Governor Diri had developed the habit of re-inaugurating projects executed by his predecessor without making any reference to former Governor Dickson.

He observed that without the sacrifices, hard work and foresight of Dickson, Diri would not have become a governor.

He recalled that he (Diri) failed the popularity test in 2019 when he was roundly trounced by the APC and would fail again in November for mismanaging over three years in governance.

Sylva said: “You can’t subject people to this kind of hardship and expect them to bring you back to power. The people are tired and willing to sack this failed government.

The former governor appealed to Ekeremor people to keep faith with him, saying that he would fulfill all the promises he made to them when elected in November.

  • Diri has performed, says Orbih

    Diri has performed, says Orbih

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday hailed  Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri for it called an impressive performance in his first term.

A statement by the governor’s spokesman,  Daniel Alabrah, quoted the party’s National Vice Chairman (South South), Chief Dan Orbih, as having stated this when he led the zonal working committee on a solidarity visit to Government House, Yenagoa.

He said the party was impressed that Diri has been inaugurating projects while campaigning for re-election.

Orbih noted that while some first term governors campaign for a second term with promises of what they would do, the Bayelsa governor has rather been busy inaugurating and flagging off projects .

According to him, the national and zonal leadership of the PDP were not only proud of his achievements but are also comfortable with him as the party’s flag-bearer in the November 11 election.

He said: “We, members of the PDP Southsouth Working Committee, came to show our solidarity with the performing governor of Bayelsa State.

“We have watched with great admiration your campaigns. Some governors campaign for their second tenure telling the people what they want to do. But your campaign is laced with commissioning of projects and flagging off new ones. It is very uncommon and we want to congratulate you.

“For us in the Southsouth, we are very proud of you and your achievements. You are indeed a miracle governor. God has again shown His hand that with His support, you can even go into the election without an opponent.”

The PDP zonal leader stressed that with Diri’s performance in office and considering the fact that the South South is the stronghold of the party, victory was assured for the governor.

Diri said the PDP was sure of victory as there was no basis for comparison between his first term and that of one of his opponents, Chief Timipre Sylva, who had also governed the state for five years.

He noted that the difference was clearly evident for all Bayelsans to see.

Diri also stated that his developmental imprints were visible in the community of the APC candidate where in sharp contrast, his opponent had nothing to campaign with even in his hometown.

He said even if the APC candidate was not contending with the constitutional issue of tenure, he was sure the election would still be won by the PDP.

Diri said: “The commitment of our people and what they stand for as far as this election is concerned is very clear. So we are home and dry even if they go into the election with the law against them.

“We went to his hometown and inaugurated a road. So I do not know when he gets to his village, what he will inaugurate there.

“The paradox is such that there is no way to compare his five years to our just about four years even when we lost one year to COVID-19 during the lockdown in 2020.”

The governor thanked the zonal working committee for the visit, urging them to close ranks in order to have a formidable house going into the election.

He averred that the PDP remained the only party on ground in terms of structure and governance that can give a viable opposition to the government at the centre and must therefore continue to be the bulwark of the opposition in the country.

  • Bayelsa 2023: Diri faces historic confidence vote

Bayelsa 2023: Diri faces historic confidence vote

Sen. Douye Diri who was born on the 4th day of June, 1959 hails paternally from the communities of Sampou in Kalama-Owinari Compound of Kolokuma/ Opukuma Local Government Area, and maternally from Ayamasa in Engowari-Binware compound of Ekeremor Local Government Area, both in Bayelsa State.

His composite citizenry birthed a responsibility that endeared him to an absolute commitment and concern to the developmental schemas of the State and also re-enforces his vision of knotting the chains of unity in the State.

He was a politically trained teacher and has transferred his knowledge of expertise to a lot, while in the classroom. This has branded him in skilled communication, and better listening capabilities that have resulted in a fostered genuine and productive collaboration with systematic adaptability cum responsiveness to actions and complaints that moderated by persevering character and attitude.

He has unreservedly bore this to play in his governance journey. Having been culturally and traditionally groomed and academically molded and sandwiched on political mastery tutelage, he ventured into initially, a sociocultural political activity and was ultimately elected as the first organizing secretary of Ijaw National Congress (INC) and later had the appointments of Executive Secretary, Centre for Youth Development in Bayelsa State and Commissioner for Youth and Sports respectively.

He also held the positions of Deputy Chief of Staff Government House and the Principal Executive Secretary to the Governor. He was a Council Board Member of the University of Maiduguri.

On his political front, he held the position, Chairman of the People’ Democratic Party Disciplinary Council, Bayelsa State and finally, he was elected to the National Assembly to represent his people in the Federal House Representative and the Senate.

However, when the decision arose to have a replacement for Henry Seriake Dickson at the expiration of his second tenure, the highly competitive position had Douye Diri selected at the party level, though he failed at the general election, but was miraculously reinstated on circumstances only can be explained by the Almighty God. Since his assumption of office as the governor of Bayelsa State, he has demonstrated his competence in the management of the state resources and has continually accounted for it through the monthly transparency briefings and had the annual financial statements timely prepared and audited. Apart from the statutory requirements, the physical projects executed attest, and confirm how the financial resources are managed.

His display of a high level of humility, respect for elders and the rights of the people, patience, tolerance, and other enviable traits have endeared him with more respect. His Excellency is building bridges and sustainable relationships with his predecessors, elders, founders, and others in the state irrespective of political party differences.

Diri has not insulted any of his leaders, followers, or opposition party members, rather he continually humbled himself. Some keen observers called him a fool and indecisive, while others classified him as weak and Jonathan in character, but we see him as a man endowed with Solomonic wisdom.

However, when the bells of the party primaries for the reelection bid began as directed by the Independent National Election Commission for Bayelsa State governorship come November 11, 2023, the battle became a defining moment in the political history of the state as the direction of the state’s leadership and envisioned strategic thinking will be repositioned in tandem to the developmental yearnings of the people.

Though, the incumbent governor, Senator Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party has performed creditably very well based on the various key infrastructural and human capacity development across every facet of the economy. Having achieved such a great milestone cum the uncommon sagacity in uniting the entire state for the task of confronting the developmental challenges have refined him to members of his party in specific and to the entire Bayelsa in general.

Instead of it being a competitive gubernatorial primary election, surprisingly the governor was given the right of first refusal  based on his sterling records of performance by the party. This was a big relief to the party faithful as the issue of party primaries that normally result in crisis was averted. This feat was achieved based on his achievements that are already in the public domain which facts are incontestable. Though in-order to fulfil the governing fundamentals, a primary election of the party was conducted under the supervision of the Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, which actually turned out to be the most peaceful and orderly in the annals of such political events in the state.

The general endorsement of Diri and his subsequent emergence as the standard bearer of the PDP in the forthcoming governorship election came after he celebrated his third year in office.

The event, which was celebrated, culminated in the commissioning of life-touching projects cutting across the three senatorial districts. Among these projects were the three senatorial roads linking up riverine communities in a State that is 75 percent marine. Most of these communities have suffered untold hardship as they can only be accessed by river craft and boats.

In the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, the road to the riverine Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, progressing to Angiama Community and a bridge linking it to Oporoma, the headquarters of Southern Ijaw LGA, is heartwarming. While, at the Bayelsa West Senatorial District, the road from Sagbama to Ekeremor with several bridges has been constructed in pushing forth the road project to the hinterland of riverine communities. At the Bayelsa East Senatorial district; apart from reconstructing the collapsed bridge at Elebele which is a major link to many communities in the senatorial area, the government has mobilized a construction giant, Setraco Nigeria Limited, to commence work on the construction of Nembe–Brass Road, a project which has been in the drawing board for several years. These roads, which are critical to the economic development of the state and the country in general when fully completed, would also go a long way to curb the twin problems of sea piracy and rural-urban drift.

Besides completing the age-long bridge linking the ancient towns of Bassambiri-Nembe and Ogbolomabingi-Nembe, popularly called ‘Unity Bridge,’ whose construction stopped years ago, the Diri administration has also completed the construction of a bridge at Aguobiri Community in Sagbama LGA. These are part of the integrated rural development policy of the Diri administration in its conscious efforts to link up as many communities as possible.

What is happening in Bayelsa State under Governor Diri is a quiet infrastructural revolution to the admiration of even his critics.

Another important road the governor has completed is the first phase of the new Gloryland Drive which runs from the gateway at Igbogene linking to Amassoma Road. The project which is critical to opening up that axis of the Yenagoa metropolis will put an end to the one trunk road syndrome in the state capital, Yenagoa.

Meanwhile, the construction of a ring road connecting Opolo-Elebele to the Igbogene Gateway is in progress and is about 85 percent completed. Apart from the construction of a major highway from the airport to the Igbedi Community which until now was accessible only by river; the completion of the International Cargo Airport is another heartwarming signature project completed by the Diri administration. Besides the economic benefits that come with it, the airport has strategically placed Bayelsa on the world map of flight operations. This is why the governor aptly said during the commissioning of the airport, “This airport will take Bayelsa to the world and the world to Bayelsa State.” In addition to that, the state government embarked on mass construction of over 50 internal roads within the Yenagoa metropolis; among these are the Edepie School Road, Royal FM Road, just to mention but a few.

In the area of education, the Diri administration has endeared itself to the education-conscious people of the state by its huge investment in the sector. Apart from the massive rehabilitation and construction of new schools across the state. The huge investment in the infrastructural concerns of tertiary institutions has yielded positive results, particularly with the accreditation of 71 courses at a stretch at the premier state-owned Niger Delta University, which is no mean achievement.

Also, courses at the state-owned Medical University, College of Education, School of Nursing, and Midwifery are not left out in this arrangement. The massive investment in education points to the premium the government places on human capital development and using education as a cornerstone in redefining its philosophy of development.

It is against this background that the Diri administration, which has core values in the training and retraining of teachers; for the first time in the history of Bayelsa State, engaged the services of Microsoft in training 12,000 teachers to update and equip them fully with contemporary skills in the emerging world of Information Technology, ICT. Today teachers in the state fondly call themselves ‘Digital Teachers.’

Besides the introduction of the teaching of Indigenous Ijaw Language at the Niger Delta University, post-primary and primary schools are not left out in the promotion of Ijaw identity and cultural heritage as the fourth largest ethnic group in multilingual Nigeria.  The Diri administration is leaving no stone unturned in the building of science and technical colleges in each of the eight local government areas of the state. Six of such colleges have already been completed. The broad objective of the programme is a paradigm shift from the past glory of theory to that of practical acquisition of skills, rooted in the promotion of the ideals of self-reliance and entrepreneurial-driven economy, as well as curbing the problem of unemployment among youths. There is no doubt, that this singular vision is changing the human capital development narrative of the state.

One positive attitude that cannot be left unmentioned is Diri’s servant-leader culture which he has brought to bear on the governance of the state through his quick response to addressing emerging issues.

One can recount an occasion when the Bayelsa State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, brought to the attention of the governor some problems hampering the effective discharge of their duties, ranging from no promotion to non-payment of the backlog of 18 percent minimum wage arrears owed the teachers since 2011, with the speed of light, the government promptly approved and paid the arrears owed the teachers and accordingly implemented their outstanding promotions since 2014.

In the same vein, the governor who is often called the ‘Miracle Governor’ also approved and paid the state government’s part of the counterpart funding for all primary health care workers across all the LGAs in the state, essentially to boost the morale of the workers. This is in addition to the full implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage which had been an issue of foot dragging. “This is just the beginning of good governance in the state.”

Another act that has not only endeared the governor to the ordinary people of the state but has also rekindled the hope of retirees in the scheme of things, is the regular payment of monthly pensions and the provision of a monthly budget of N200 million targeted at offsetting the backlog of gratuities which have been pending under previous administrations. It is interesting to note that the state governor intermittently released billions of Naira to pay gratuities of retirees over the years in addition to the monthly N200 million payment of gratuities.

However, in the midst of lean resources, when COVID-19 struck, Diri rose to the occasion with uncommon courage in confronting the seemingly overwhelming pandemic by rolling up his sleeves in assembling competent health and medical personnel to tackle the menace.

Apart from providing a wide range of drugs and procurement of medical equipment in combating the life-threatening disease, the government spared no effort at distributing palliatives to all nooks and crannies of the state to cushion the impact of the pandemic. Unlike Lagos, Kano, and other states where the Federal Government had direct financial interventions in billions of Naira to assist those states in the fight against the disease, Bayelsa under Diri single-handedly prosecuted the fight against the virus.

It is also pertinent to mention, that just in the midst of the last devastating flood, Diri, in his characteristic sense of humanitarian feeling, stood in empathy with flood victims by providing succor in terms of medicare, food, bedding, and temporary homes for the flood victims.  The governor appreciated and understood the feelings and aspirations of the ordinary people of the state.

It is against this background that when the right of first refusal to fly the flag of the PDP was given to the governor; it did not come as a surprise to those who have been following his life-touching development programmes with keen interest. The right of first refusal, which is happening for the first time in the political history of Bayelsa, right from the old Rivers State, is cheering development based on the sterling indices of the performance of Governor Diri.

Just like the saying that, the voice of the people, is the voice of God, and that a good term in office deserves another. For the first time, Bayelsans have all come out openly to speak with one voice to endorse Governor Douye Diri for a second term in the expectation that the ongoing projects are completed, commissioned, and delivered to the beneficiaries.

In addition, the governor with his culture of continuing on abandoned projects executed by his predecessors is reactivated. Moreover, the accrued pension liabilities are refinanced to be wholly settled and the current employees on the old pension scheme are migrated to the contributory pension scheme.

Finally, the perennial rain flood experienced in the state can be remedied through the construction of a massive drainage system.

    • More APC members, supporters, join PDP

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has taken a swipe at the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 11 governorship election, Chief Timipre Sylva, for allegedly making false claims on the Sagbama-Ekeremor road project.

Speaking at Igeibiri in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship campaign yesterday, Diri lambasted Sylva for claiming that he constructed the Sagbama-Ekeremor road to a level before the immediate past governor completed it.

He said Sylva did not pour a shovel of sand on the road when he governed the state for five years.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, who is a member of the Publicity Directorate of the state PDP Governorship Campaign Council, quoted the governor as saying that Bayelsans do not deserve a governor that lies and who had nothing to show for his time as governor.

Diri said he was not at Igeibiri to campaign, saying his achievements in the community spoke volumes, assuring that he would do more when he returns for a second tenure.

He expressed appreciation to the Igeibiri people for always standing by the PDP and expressed the optimism that they will again support him and his party during the election.

At Oporoma, headquarters of Southern Ijaw LGA, Diri was conferred with the chieftaincy title of ‘Owou fini-owei keni’ of Southern Ijaw (one who opened the road to Southern Ijaw).

He assured the Oporoma people that the generator promised the community would be installed before the end of this year and that his administration would stop at nothing to ensure that Southern Ijaw was developed.

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has called on the people, particularly, the Southern Ijaw to back his re-election bid, saying several projects were in the pipeline to be delivered if he wins the governorship election in November 11.

The Governor, who made this appeal when his campaign train berthed at Southern Ijaw, promised to re-commence and complete the road from Toru-Ebeni in Sagbama Local Government Area linking Ogboinbiri-Ekeni-Ezetu communities in the area.

Diri, who is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, visited Southern Ijaw communities of Ukubie, Ogboinbiri, Korokorosei and Olugbobiri in continuation of his re-election campaigns yesterday.

At Ukubie, headquarters of Southern Ijaw Constituency 4, the governor said the road project would be included in the state’s 2024 budget.

He, however, directed the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to immediately commence clearing of the road.

The Toru-Ebeni road, which was initiated by former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, when he was governor of the state, was inherited by Senator Seriake Dickson, who continued the project and constructed the Toru-Ebeni Bridge.

After inspecting the Ukubie community hospital, Diri directed the Commissioner for Health to immediately assess the health facility and carry out renovation works.

Responding to their requests, he promised to build a pavilion in the community as well as convey their request for establishment of a police station to the appropriate authorities.

He said: “This constituency needs development and what will facilitate it is the Yenagoa-Oporoma-Ukubie Bayelsa Central senatorial road as well as the Toru-Ebeni-Ogboinbiri-Ekeni-Ezetu road.

Diri urged the people to continue to support his administration, adding that more people from the local government will also benefit from the government’s empowerment schemes.
