CAN, Islamic council endorse Diri, deputy for second term

The Bayelsa State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Council of Islamic Affairs (CIA) have endorsed the re-election of Governor Douye Diri and his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

A statement by a media aide to the Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Mr. Doubara Atasi, said the two religious bodies spoke glowingly about Diri’s administration during a visit to Government House, Yenagoa.

Speaking on behalf of the two groups, the state Chairman of CAN, Rev. Father Joseph Opelema, and his Council for Islamic Affairs counterpart, Alhaji Yakubu Otobo, said the Christian and Muslim communities had jointly resolved to give their full support for the re-election of the Governor and his deputy to ensure continuity of the prosperity agenda in Bayelsa State.

The two leaders said the visit was informed by the positive testimonials of the Governor Douye Diri-led administration and to let the leaders know that the joint council was fully behind the re-election of the Governor and his deputy.

They remarked that they had seen the direction the state was going, and would do everything within their powers to ensure the continuity and consolidation of the present administration in the state.

Responding, Governor Diri, who was represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, appreciated his visitors for their kind words of encouragement and support.

Diri was also full of thanks for the foremost Christian and Muslim organizations for their continued support, noting that their endorsement would motivate the administration to do more for the development of the state.

He urged them to stand for the truth at all times for speaking the obvious truth, and refrain from isolating themselves from politics for them to contribute to the progress of society.

Bayelsa guber: PDP youth leader, top aides dump Diri for Sylva, APC

Some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State, including the party’s youth leader, Nunieh Odede, have dumped the party’s governorship candidate and the state governor, Douye Diri, for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Timipre Sylva.

In a handwritten letter on Monday, September 18, Nunieh announced his resignation from the PDP while other principal aides of the governor vacated their offices to campaign for Sylva.

A statement signed by Sylva’s Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Julius Bokoru, confirmed that Nunieh met with the APC candidate.

According to the statement, Nunieh said: “We have spent years with the PDP and we built the party to where it is. It is imperative we move on now in light of what is happening in the state.

“Bayelsa is in a comatose state and we cannot keep doing the old things and expect to get it right. Our resignation from the PDP, honestly, is to save our dear state from further ruin”.

The statement also quoted Sylva as commending the courage of Nunieh and other defectors, who chose the progress and development of the state over selfish gains.

Sylva said:  “Youths are always the driving force of every society, youths also embody and gives a trajectory of what the future would look like

“Your decisions today is heroic and selfless, you have placed state over self and beyond even the elections you instil in us all that Bayelsa state is bound to do well.”

The statement listed those who abandoned Diri for Sylva as Abiah Joseph Oyisor, Director Bayelsa State Environmental Authority; Hon. Ayaye Obuma, Governor’s Representative, Yenegoa LGA; Hon. Itu Goodluck, Special Adviser, Special Duties to the Governor; Hon. Timipa Ile, Special Adviser, Special Duties to the Governor and Hon. Olali Suwofien, Special Adviser Special Duties.

The statement said after their resignation from the PDP and endorsement of APC and Chief Sylva, they would be received in a formal endorsement ceremony with thousands of their supporters.

It also said the defections eroded Diri’s chance of winning Yenagoa, the capital city, especially the Epie/Atissa kingdoms where Sylva is making mammoth gains.

Bokoru confirmed that recently the Deputy Governorship candidate of the APC Joshua Maciver received thousands of defectors from Sagbama LGA and the home of the incumbent deputy governor of Bayelsa State.

    • ’APC candidate crying wolf’

The immediate past Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, has accused Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri of recruiting spies to monitor his movements.

Sylva, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 11 governorship election in the state, made the accusation in a statement on Sunday by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Julius Bokoru.

He claimed that credible intelligence available to him indicated that the spies operating across the state especially the Bayelsa International Cargo Airport were asked to document and report his movements in the state to some off-grid security architecture in Bayelsa.

The former governor said the spies’ activities were being coordinated by a close security aide to Governor Diri with the aim of compromising his convoy.

He called on security agencies and members of the public to take note of Diri’s strategy of violence against him and the people of Bayelsa with special focus on Opu-Nembe.

He said any serving governor hoping for reelection adopts the strategy of commissioning and inaugurating projects to convince the people but that Diri had resorted to desperation, violence and underhand practices following his failure in office.

The statement said: “Credible reports available to H.E Chief Timipre Sylva, governorship candidate of the APC in Bayelsa State suggests that Governor Douye Diri has commissioned spies across the state, especially at the Bayelsa  International Cargo Airport, to document and report Chief Sylva’s movements in Bayelsa and environs to some off-grid security architecture in the state.

“This desperate, illegitimate security operation is headed by a close security aide to Governor Diri and the end game, as is known, is to compromise the convoy and security of Chief Sylva.

“This is to alert the general public, especially the security agencies across the nation, to take note of Diri’s strategy of violence against Sylva and the Bayelsa people with special focus being Opu-Nembe.

“A serving Governor’s chief campaign strategy, naturally, is to reel out achievements and milestones, not investing in an orgy of violence. Diri should be commissioning projects, not commissioning spies.

“Sylva’s push to Creek Haven is an act of liberation and Bayelsans are massively aligned. The change is soon, the change is inevitable and the soul of Bayelsa state will be salvaged from the jaws of characters whose futile way of masking their inefficiency is violence.”

But in a swift reaction to the accusation, Governor Douye Diri said Sylva was only crying wolf where none existed, contending that Sylva was the one planning what he was accusing him of.

The Governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, said Sylva is a drowning man seeking claws to hang on to or trying to make excuses for his failed governorship project.

He reiterated that Sylva’s rejection by his party chieftains, his Nembe/Brass people and indeed the Bayelsa electorate is total.

Alabra said: “Governor Douye Diri is a well-known pacifist and an advocate of politics without bitterness. He has said he won’t spill blood to get re-elected into office.

“It is on record that for the first time in the history of elections in Bayelsa State, the February/March general election in the country was so peaceful in the state that there were no reported cases of bloodshed and killings unlike in the past. This was due to the governor’s peaceful disposition that has permeated the politics of the state.

“So, Chief Sylva is only crying wolf where there is none. Going by his antecedents, we believe he is the one planning what he is accusing the governor of. But it is better to ignore the rantings of a drowning man seeking claws to hang on to or trying to make excuses for his failed governorship project.

*His rejection by his party chieftains, his Nembe/Brass people and indeed the Bayelsa electorate is total.”

Diri gave INC, IYC new lease of life, says Lokpobiri

Newly-elected President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Comrade Jonathan Lokpobiri, has said the foremost Ijaw nation youth organisation is grateful to Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri for giving the Ijaw National Congress (INC) and the IYC a new lease of life.

Speaking during a visit to the governor at his Sampou community home yesterday, Lokpobiri recalled how both bodies battled with internal wrangling before the governor assumed office and intervened to bring peace and unity within them.

He thanked the governor for his role in ensuring the election that produced the current executive was peaceful and credible.

Noting that Diri’s neutrality allowed the will of the people to prevail, Lokpobiri also expressed gratitude to leaders of the Ijaw nation for their contributions to the success of the election.

The IYC President asked for a land to build a national secretariat for the group as well as financial support.

He said his executive would not let the Ijaw nation down.

He lamented that the Ijaw, who are a minority in five other Niger Delta states apart from Bayelsa, are being marginalised and ill-treated and appealed to the governor to use his position to intervene.

Governor Diri stressed the need for the Ijaw nation to be united and peaceful, saying it was the only way the ethnic group could develop.

He urged the new IYC leadership to place service to Ijawland above any personal consideration, noting that the ethnic group was looking up to them.

He also advised the IYC to imbibe the spirit of forgiveness, patience and tolerance, in order for them to go far. Diri said they are dealing with a group of people who are volatile.

Stressing the need for the group to remain politically-neutral, he enjoined them to speak up against violence in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

He said by receiving them, he had given legitimacy to the Lokpobiri-led IYC and pledged to support the executive to enable it succeed.

The governor said: “Let me on behalf of the government of Bayelsa State congratulate you. For those who lost and are here, I also congratulate you. I told you from the beginning that I am a father to all of you and as such I would not support anybody.

“First of all, you have to put Ijaw nation before your personal interest. If you put your interest first, you will not succeed. Live up to your oath and do not be the master. Be the servant in humility, respect and honour. We must change our mindset as Ijaw people to learn how to depend on ourselves and be enterprising.

“Election has been a problem in Ijawland. Some people are threatening to kill in the November 11 governorship election, but I know as youths, you will not allow it. We should all join hands to make the election violence-free. I will not spill blood to remain in office.

“The struggle continues to get other homogeneous Ijaw states. So we must keep the fire burning and work hand in gloves with the INC in order to leave worthy legacies.

“We have heard your requests and we will respond at the appropriate time. We will work with you and we hope and pray that the Ijaw nation grows.”

The Commissioner for Ijaw National Affairs, Mr. Patrick Erasmus, lauded Governor Diri for stabilising the INC and IYC and hoped that the IYC new executive would live up to expectation.

    • Sylva to Diri: you are incompetent, your defeat imminent
    • Ex-minister’s statement outbursts of rejected politician – Gov

The Bayelsa State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Timipre Sylva, has told the state Governor, Douye Diri, to prepare to vacate the Creek Haven, Government House, describing him as incompetent and a woeful failure.

Sylva, who reacted to Diri’s comment that he and the APC were not sellable in Bayelsa, said the governor was only having his last kick because he knew his defeat was imminent.

The former Petroleum Minister in a statement signed by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Julius Bokoru, said Diri had nothing to campaign with as he had wasted his four years of unmerited victory in the state and was waiting to be kicked out by the people on November 11.

Sylva said: “Douye Diri is fully aware his chances of winning are nil. While Sylva maintains a wide lead over Diri in experience, competence and sincerity of purpose, Diri, who was imposed on the people steadily drifts into massive defeat because of his glaring incompetence and insensitive governance.

“In his statements in front of the few remaining Nembe LGA PDP people, Diri is seen to pride himself with the Nembe Bridge, but the world knows that that bridge was 75% completed by Sylva. Diri barely touched that bridge.”

Sylva said the people had expected Diri to be going around inaugurating developmental projects ahead of the election, but because he had nothing to show, the governor was busy issuing vague statements and bribing people for support.

Sylva recalled that Diri lost Nembe LGA with nearly 80% of the votes against him saying his obsession with Opu-Nembe and Nembe LGA generally was connected to another round of defeat waiting for him in the LGA.

However, Governor Douye Diri has further described Sylva as a rejected politician and a drowning man looking for a straw to clutch, saying that the former Governor is only fighting a losing battle.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, the Governor said Sylva had been abandoned by chieftains and stalwarts of his party (APC), wondering how a politician already rejected by his own would fare at the poll in less than two months.

The governor asked: “Where is the money and the road today? It is the Bayelsa State Government that is building the Nembe-Brass road today. It goes without saying that Sylva hates Bayelsa and that is why he has been rejected by his own people and rejected by Bayelsans.

“He has been rejected by the people because of his antecedents and the things that he did that are against Bayelsa. He is a rejected stone at home. Mind you, he was stoned by Bayelsans when he was governor in 2012. The same man that was rejected before has been rejected again and why is he trying to play God?

“Sylva should go and rest. He has no hope in the forthcoming election. Bayelsans have aligned with Diri who has shown capacity and delivered landmark projects in the state including Sylva’s area.”

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Chief Timipre Sylva have clashed over the lingering political crisis rocking Opu-Nembe kingdom in Nembe Local Government.

While Sylva, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 11 governorship poll, said the governor’s fresh plot to destabilise Opu-Nembe would fail, Diri accused Sylva of playing the ostrich in the crisis.

Sylva in a statement signed by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Julius Bokoru, alerted security agencies and the public to fresh plot by Governor Diri to stoke fresh crisis in Opu-Nembe ahead of the election.

He said Diri had been the hand behind Opu-Nembe bloody crisis in the past two years.

Insisting that the governor had shown nothing but absolute disdain to the people of the area, Sylva said Diri is only interested in keeping Opu-Nembe in crisis because it is the stronghold of the APC.

Sylva s2aid upon his return from junketing abroad, Diri was angry to behold that the Inspector-General of Police hearkened to the outcries of the people and restored calm to Opu-Nembe.

He said: “It is very concerning that Governor Diri has become obsessed with Opu-Nembe, a community for which he had shown absolute disdain. If you ask Governor Diri to point to one project he has done in Opu-Nembe, be assured he cannot point to half a project.

“Many believe, however, he has been the hand behind the crisis in Opu-Nembe for the past two odd years. He clearly showed his leprous hand earlier this year. Before the elections became eminent and before Sylva emerged as the governorship candidate of the APC, Governor Diri had shown only contempt for Opu-Nembe.

“It is quite disturbing that Governor Diri only woke up from his slumber at this time when at the plea of the community, the Inspector-General of Police intervened and got the community back on its feet again.”

Governor Diri’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, while reacting to a statement credited to the former Bayelsa governor, in which he accused the incumbent governor of stirring crisis in Opu-Nembe (Bassambiri), said Sylva was embarking on a futile mission to deflect attention from his own disdainful role in the protracted conflict.

He said it was a surprise that Sylva just found his voice one month after the current crisis broke in the community.

Diri said: “It is equally befuddling that Sylva was engaging in scape-goatism when virtually everyone in the state and beyond knew who the key instigator and agent-provocateur in the Bassambiri crisis was.

“To claim that the governor had been silent, in one breath, since the current skirmish was ignited in Chief Sylva’s paternal community two years ago, smacks of either his poor analysis of the situation on the ground or perhaps he is ignorant of the governor’s role in ensuring that peace returned to Bassambiri.

“For the former governor to also turn around to accuse the incumbent governor of stirring crisis in the community, on the other hand, is an indication that Sylva had forgotten what a governor needed to do in such a circumstance and he therefore does not deserve the votes of the Bayelsa people on November 11.

“Bassambiri is a community in Bayelsa State whose citizens deserve the protection of the state government, just as the community deserves development like all its counterparts across the state.

“Our administration will therefore not shy away from its constitutionally-guaranteed mandate and responsibilities to people of the state, including those in Bassambiri community and the Nembe people as a whole.

“It is doubtful if the Bassambiri people can recall any of Sylva’s legacies in their community, except perhaps the frequent conflicts instigated and perpetrated by persons known to him and who enjoy his protection.”

LP candidate to Diri: your jobs, appointments for votes won’t save you

Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Bayelsa State, Udengs Eradiri, an engineer; has described the alleged ongoing employment process initiated by Governor Douye Diri and hiring of more political appointees ahead of the November 11 election as a grand deception that will not save him from defeat.

Eradiri claimed that Diri, sensing his impending defeat at the coming poll, had resorted to underhand tactics to hoodwink people by engaging them in an endless job recruitment process in exchange for their votes.

Speaking in a sarcastic tone yesterday during his campaign, the LP candidate thanked the governor for signing some political players from the Labour Party in his desperate attempt to boost his chances at the polls.

Eradiri said he was also aware of the ongoing plan by the governor to sign some willing LP executive members in the state to create false impression that the party had collapsed into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Said he: “What is coming on November 11 is beyond party. It is a mass movement and a revolution against bad, incompetent and clueless government.

“I am happy that LP has become a force to reckon with ahead of this election and that my participation in the poll as the candidate of the party is giving Governor Diri a nightmare.”

“My involvement in the election has provided jobs for people, who ordinarily were not considered fit to work in the government of Diri. In the last three years, the governor did not consider rolling out jobs for people and engaging more political appointees.

“But today, a few weeks to the election, Governor Diri is hawking appointment letters as a strategy to boost his chances. Unknown to him, Bayelsa people are wiser now. They understand his game. Besides, he is not doing them any favour because the money is not owned by the governor. It belongs to the people.

“So, if he invites you, go and take your money. If he gives you a job, accept it and enjoy it while it lasts. But the truth is that this great state deserves a better alternative and should be rescued from the incompetence of this administration.”

Describing the motive as vote-buying, Eradiri advised persons accepting the jobs to be wary of the governor’s antics, saying the offers were fake and would be terminated immediately after the election.

He recalled that such deceptive campaign method was deployed in the past, but that those who thought they had secured jobs as appointees of the government were laid off after the election.

He said: “Common sense will tell everybody that this is just a campaign strategy, which will fall like a pack of cards. Governor Diri has occupied the office for over three years, but did not deem it fit to employ anybody. But suddenly he woke up from his slumber a few weeks to another election and started hawking appointments.

“Tell Governor Diri that ‘Bayelsans’ are wiser now and cannot be deceived by his method of vote-buying ahead of the election. It is clear that the process is already tainted by deception.

    • Says Niger Delta Ministry lacks inclusiveness

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has urged the Federal Government to consider renaming the East-West Road in the South-South region to reflect its real location and status.

Governor Diri also called on the Federal Government to ensure more inclusiveness in the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs in order to give the Niger Delta people a sense of belonging.

Senator Diri stated this on Friday when he received the Minister of Niger Delta, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, and his entourage, which included Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Sam Ogbuku, in Government House, Yenagoa.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Daniel Alabrah, quoted the governor as noting that the East-West road had been in a deplorable condition for years.

He contended that the nomenclature of the road, which crisscrosses all the South-South states, was a misnomer.

He said: “I believe that is a wrong nomenclature. That nomenclature should actually be the South-South Road because it links all the six states of the South-South region.

“That nomenclature might have come in those days when Bayelsa was part of Rivers and they were part of the Eastern region. And when Delta and Edo states were part of the Mid-West region. So that nomenclature would have been a historical west to east.

“Today, the story is different and I appeal that the Federal Government change the nomenclature from East-West to South-South Road. That road is central to all the six states as it traverses all of them.

“Unfortunately, at the moment, the road is nothing to write home about. That is one of the reasons people of this region feel that we are being shortchanged even with all that we produce. With all that we bring to the federal kitty, what actually comes to us is more like peanuts. And often, when the peanuts come, there are some out there opposing it.”

Diri however commended President Bola Tinubu for the appointment of Momoh as well as Ogbuku as the substantive NDDC MD, saying both of them are illustrious sons of the Niger Delta.

On the impact of the Niger Delta Ministry on the region, Governor Diri asserted that there was need for more inclusiveness by the ministry.

In his remarks, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Abubakar Momoh, said he was in Bayelsa to seek collaboration with the state government on issues of development of the region, which included the completion of the East-West road.

The minister, who lamented the poor state of the road, described it as significant to the region, which is host to some of the nation’s strategic assets.

He solicited the partnership of the Niger Delta governors to tackle the region’s developmental challenges.
