  • Govt distributes generating sets to rural communities

Five rural communities yesterday got a 3.5 KVA generating set each from the Lagos State Government. The generators which were distributed by the Ministry of Rural Development are meant to power their boreholes.

Distributing the equipment in his office at Alausa in Ikeja, the Commissioner for Rural Development, Hon Cornelius Ojelabi charged the communities to take care of generators so that they can continue to enjoy uninterrupted water.

He urged Community Development Associations (CDAs) to protect government projects and facilities in their domains from vandalism.

Ojelabi lamented that because of lack of maintenance, government is not getting value for projects handed over to CDAs.

He noted that small faults that could be rectified with N1,000 are left unattended to for months and years just because the CDAs are waiting for government.

Earlier, a representative of the Rural Water and Sanitation Department, Mrs. Sanni Anibire, said the generators were procured for the communities’ boreholes to function always.

She said the benefiting communities were chosen because they have been maintaining their water projects.

The Community Development Committee (CDC) Chairman of Mosan-Okunola, Mr. Moshood Ogunrombi, promised that the generators would be maintained. He urged CDA members to always ask their Chairmen for feedback from government.

The benefiting communities are: Iragon CDA in Badagry Central, Temu CDA in Ikosi-Ejinrin, Ijedodo CDA in Ojo, Ogo-Oluwa CDA in Ikorodu and Federal Low Cost Housing Estate in Alimosho.

Present at the handing over ceremony were the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Mr. Olatunde Agoro, and management Staff of the ministry.

  • Obi distributes N713m to Anambra pensioners, communities

Anambra State Governor Peter Obi yesterday distributed cheques worth N713million to 516 local government pensioners and primary school teachers.

The cash, Obi said, was the gratuity of those who retired between April and December 2011.

The Obi administration has spent over N19billion on the gratuity of retired workers in the last two years.

The governor recalled that from inception, his administration had been saving money to ensure regular payment of pension and gratuity.

He said he had cleared huge pension and gratuity arrears which previous administrations accumulated.

Obi expressed satisfaction that his administration had streamlined the system which would ensure that every retired worker receives his or her gratuity without delay.

The governor also distributed N2million cheques to each of the 178 communities at the Women Development Centre, Awka.

He said N1million was for security while another N1million was for palliative work in the communities.

Obi explained that effective security is priority of his administration, adding that patrol vehicles would soon be distributed to the communities.

The governor regretted that the impact of the fund for palliative had not been felt in some communities.

He urged traditional rulers and Presidents-General of the communities to ensure that the money was judiciously used to repair the roads in their domains.
