An energy expert and Managing Director of Protogy Global Services Limited, Engr. Ademola Agoro, has called for a strategic shift in Nigeria’s power sector to address the nation’s ongoing energy challenges.
Agoro emphasized the urgent need to prioritize investments in the distribution grid over the transmission grid to unlock the full potential of the energy sector and drive sustainable development.
In a statement, he highlighted the distribution grid as the vital link between power generation and consumers, stressing that its enhancement is crucial for expanding energy access and integrating diverse energy sources.
He noted that by facilitating the import and export of electricity at 400V, a strengthened distribution grid could seamlessly incorporate energy from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and biomass, improving power availability, particularly in underserved communities.
Agoro further advocated for increased private sector involvement in state and community-level distribution grids, arguing that this approach would promote healthy competition among providers. He added that consumers would benefit from improved service quality and affordable energy options.

He asserted: “Such competition will lead to better service delivery, reduced outages, and cost-effective energy solutions.
“A key reform proposed is the return of meter ownership to a centralised, state-managed grid authority. This policy will eliminate monopolistic practices by distribution companies and give consumers the freedom to switch providers without incurring extra costs for new meters.
“Such a move will ensure fairness in access to metering while promoting consumer protection.
“Investments in smart distribution grids with advanced metering and control systems are also critical. These technologies will pave the way for greater integration of renewable energy sources, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and supporting Nigeria’s energy transition goals.
Agoro also highlighted the benefits of decentralised grid development. “Localized energy markets will enable communities to trade surplus power or export it to the grid. This reduces transmission losses, improves energy equity, and promotes energy independence.”
While acknowledging the importance of transmission grid investments, Agoro reiterated that the immediate priority must be distribution grid infrastructure.
“This shift will address Nigeria’s pressing energy challenges, reduce inefficiencies, lower financial losses, and spur economic development.
