  • Nollywood producers, distributors advised to shun films that debase societal values

Industry stakeholders have called on producers and distributors in the Nigerian movie industry to eschew films and video works that erode values that define the African people.

The stakeholders made the call in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on the sideline of a conference on Film and Video Classification and Censorship in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The event, with the theme, “The Dynamics of Online Movie and Video Contents”, was organised by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), from April 16 to 17, for filmmakers, distributors, investors and artiste.

According to the stakeholders, films that reinforce violence and moral decadence have demeaning  effect on age-long values and acceptable ways of life, which may escalate juvenile delinquency.

Mr Fidelis Duker, Chief Executive Officer of Nafifo Ventures, Organisers of Abuja International Film Festival (AIFF), said: “Everybody involved in making the film should ask if its contents reflects our culture and values as Africans.

“We are all supposed to be self regulators to uphold our value system and morals as Nigerians, and not to wait for the NFVCB to compel us before we do the right thing.

“At the point of conception when the scriptwriter has the idea, he should begin to  imbibe values, and the director should do the same.

“The language used in a film, act of violence and nudity, send messages out to people, especially children, who may  apply them wrongly.

“We are Africans and we will remain a people with strong moral values which need to be sustained and transferred to the younger generation,” he said

Duker, who had earlier made a presentation on “Movie Contents and Classification: Projecting Value Systems through Censorship”, noted that many filmmakers still placed emphasis on profit above impact of their works on society.

He advised that although the filmmakers are business persons who set out to make profit, there was need for them to be socially responsible, as they shape public opinions.

He, therefore, urged filmmakers to always submit their contents to NFVCB for rating in other to safeguard the Nigerian child.

Also, Mr Obiora Chukwumba, a Film Regulatory Consultant, told NAN that marketing and distribution needs to be given important attention if the Nigerian market would be sanitised of unlicensed and unclassified films.

He called on film distributors to shun sharp practices and breaching of the censorship demands.

“By the system of physical distribution of films, the distributor is directly in charge of the market, and if he is professional in his conduct, he will adhere to the ethics that guilds it.

“He is to preserve the product, the market and make sure that there are no leakages.

“The moment the distributors hold themselves accountable, they will determine what enters the market, and if any film does not carry the authorised classification label, it should not be allowed in the market,” he said.

NAN reports that the conference was part of stakeholders’ education campaign of the NFVCB across the country, especially in film and video production hubs.

It is aimed at making practitioners and the consumers to understand the essence of classification and censorship in the evolving Nigerian movie industry.

  • Fed Govt seeks more energy distributors

The Federal Government is seeking more investments in  distribution  to improve   electricity, Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has said.

The government, he said, was working towards actualising its dream of making electricity generated in the rural areas, a commercial product.

He said the government was committed to making generation, distribution and transmission of electricity  a business activity.

The government, according to him, can only maximise the potentials in the sector, when it is able to sell what it produces.

He said: ’’ We must be able to sell what we produce, because there is no gain in generating what you cannot distribute or supply to the people.

Fashola, who spoke at the side line of the inauguration of 2xby 60 MVA 132/133 KVA in Odogunyan power sub-station in Ikorodu, Lagos, said energy distribution is vital to the growth of the industry, stressing that the government is targeting  more investments from it.

According to him, the country requires more players in the distribution value chain, in order to be able to compliment the services of the eleven companies, approved by the Federal Government, to distribute power to the consumers in the country.

He said the country was able to distribute 5,000 megawatts of electricity out of 7,000 megawatts of electricity that was generated in recent times, adding that the shortfall of 2,000Mw of electricity would have been avoided, if there is enough power destruction capacity on ground.

Fashola said: ‘’At the moment, the country generates 7,000 Mw of electricity, while it is distrusting only 5,000 Mw of electricity. In the meantime, the country needs more capacity and capital in the distribution segment of the sector. That is where the country needs to focus its attention now, if Nigeria is to handle the industry as a business venture. We must be able to sell what we produce, because there is no gain in generating what you cannot distribute.’’

He said the country would generate more electricity, adding that the power generation must be matched with distribution to achieve growth in the sector.

The Minister said the country is expecting 240 Mw of electricity from Afam Power Plant, adding that the development will help in improving power generation in the country.

Still on power, he said the government has created and executed 90 projects in Yola, and other parts of the country, adding that the idea would help improve supply of electricity.

Similarly, LAGA CE Power Limited Managing Director,  Mrs Rhoda Afolabi, said her firm had in the past nine years built the power sub-stations in Ipaja, Odogunyan and two others, adding that Odogunyan sub-station will help improve electricity supply to the industrial areas.

She said steel, manufacturing and other companies in Ikorodu will be able to access electricity through feeders on the sub-station.    She said the project ensures that 90 Mw of electricity would be release to the industries and other users in the area.

She said his ministry inherited over 800 containers at the ports, on assumption of office in 2015, adding that the containers were not cleared due to poor finance.

The inability of past government, Afolabi  said, to clear the containers, made it difficult for contractors in the power sector to get materials to work with.

He said the ministry has been able to clear 500 containers, while at the same time, moved the equipment in those containers to sites where electricity is being transmitted and distributed in the country.

He said the government would have by the end of 2018, expand the distribution capacity in the country, to boost supply iof electricity in Nigeria.

Onyeka Onwenu takes music distributors to court

The elegant stallion, as she is fondly called, had on Sunday, sent a public broadcast announcing her legal move over an alleged copyright infringement, which she described as “massive violation of my musical copyright dues and the illegal exploitation of my intellectual property.”

She said: “For years, Iroking profited from the sale of my music, even after a two-year contract it signed with me had elapsed. For years, also, they denied that they were doing so, they denied that they had made any profits from their illegal exploits.

“When they were caught in the lie, they wanted to settle but refused to show up for meetings.

“Iroking as a Company is arrogant and has no regard for the people, Artistes whose works and labor have made them successful.

“We are therefore suing to make a point. Artistes have a right to profit from their Intellectual Property and labor. Nigeria has Copyright Laws which ought to be respected. The music industry has been built up and sustained by artistes and entrepreneurs like me. I demand to be protected by the Laws of my Country. Iroking must pay for this violation.”

Onwenu urged other artistes to be vigilant, and wake up to their rights, especially in the internet era.

“It is also my hope that other Artistes will wake up and demand for what is due them. Many do not know that their music is being exploited on YouTube and other carriers. Some Record Companies are selling our music on the internet and claiming ownership of the Copyright. If only we would pay attention, Artistes would discover that while they had been doing all the creative work, investing in their careers and in the industry at large, someone else is collecting all the profit. Enough is Enough! Arise Nigerian artistes and take back what belongs to you. You have been cheated for far too long,” she said.
