  • Man docked for Coke ‘theft’

    A 22-year-old unemployed, Stanley Amoebi, has been charged before a Badagry Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos State for allegedly stealing a pack of coke valued at N1,000.

    The accused is facing a charge of stealing.

    Prosecuting  Inspector Innocent Uko told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 1 at about 6.00 p.m. at Ajara Shopping Complex in Badagry.

    Uko noted that the accused stole a pack of coke from the complainant, Mrs Senami Hungbo, at her shop.

    “He went to the woman’s shop to buy a pack of coke, but while the woman was looking for change for him, he disappeared with another pack. The woman pursued him and he was apprehended.’’

    Uko noted that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    Counsel to the accused, Mr Yemi Fowler, pleaded with the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.

    Magistrate Abiodun Etti, granted the accused N20,000 bail.

    He adjourned the case till  July 3.

    2 siblings docked over alleged assault on father

    Two siblings on Tuesday appeared before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly assaulting their father, one Mr Ihiomah Ogidinta, by beating him and tying a skipping
    rope around his neck.

    The accused: Flora Ogidinta,36, and Chiedoziem Ogidinta,29, residents of Flat 18, Block 3, E-Close in 401 Rd, Festac Town, Lagos State, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, attempt to murder and threatening violence.

    The Prosecutor, ASP Soji Ojaokomo, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 1 at their residence.

    Ojaokomo said that the accused attempted to unlawfully kill their father by jointly beating him and tying a rope around his neck.

    The prosecutor said that the accused confessed that they allegedly meted out the punishment on their father because he was having an affair with their late mother’s friend.

    “The complainant said his children threatened to do worse things to him the next time he brings the woman home,” Ojaokomo said.

    Ojaokomo said that the offences contravened Sections 56, 228 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 228 stipulates life imprisonment for attempted murder while Section 409 prescribes a two-year jail term for conspiracy.

    However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr Patrick Adekomaiya, granted them bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till May 21 for mention.

    Bus conductor docked for ‘robbing’ motorist

    A 20-year-old bus conductor, Taiye Taiwo, was yesterday arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly robbing a female motorist, Mrs Vera Denedo of N12, 000 cash and her mobile phone.

    Taiwo denied the charge.

    Prosecuting police Inspector Livinus Okeke told the court that the conductor committed the offence with others at large, on April 20 at UBA Roundabout on the Marina in Lagos.

    He said the accused robbed Mrs Denedo in the traffic.

    Okeke said: “The accused and his accomplices took advantage of the traffic to steal from the complainant, who came to Lagos Island for a business transaction. Her LG mobile phone worth N6, 000 and N12, 000 were stolen by Taiwo and others.

    “Taiwo, however, ran out of luck when a few days later, the complainant who was driving on the road spotted the accused loitering in the area. At 7.30 a.m. on April 27, the complainant spotted the accused at the same area she was robbed. She immediately alerted the police who apprehended the accused.”

    The offence, Okeke said, contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    Magistrate L.A. Owolabi granted the accused N10, 000 bail with a surety in the like sum.

    He adjourned the case to May 5.

  • Man, 25, docked for allegedly raping neighbour

    A 25-year-old Collins Ezekiel, who allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl and assaulted her with blows on Friday in Lagos appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, who resides at the Government Residential Area (GRA) Ikeja, is facing trial on a two-count charge of forcefully having sexual intercourse and assault.

    The prosecutor, DSP Etim Nkankuk, told the court that the offences were committed on Feb. 2, at about 12.15 p.m., at No. 19, Sowemimo St., GRA.

    Nkankuk told the court that the accused assaulted his victim who was his neighbour by blowing her and then proceeded to forcefully have sexual intercourse with her.

    “The accused was able to overpower the teenager before defiling her,” Nkankuk said.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 137 and 170 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Section 137 prescribes life imprisonment for offenders.

    The accused entered a plea of innocence.

    The chief magistrate, Mr Olatunbosun Abolarinwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He adjourned till March 10, for legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPPs.

  • Man, 30, docked for allegedly stealing motorcycle

    The Police on Friday arraigned a 30-year-old man, Musa Abudu, 30, who was accused of stealing a motorcycle valued at N114,000.

    Abudu, a carpenter who resides at No 2, Locust Road, Badagry, Lagos State, was brought before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court on a charge of stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Innocent Uko, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Jan. 26 at Mowo Bus Stop in Badagry.

    He said that the motorcycle was owned by one Aje Olawale.

    “The owner of the motorcycle parked it at Mowo Bus Stop and crossed over to the other side of the road to buy something.

    “The accused spotted the motorcycle and thinking that no one was looking at him, took the motorcycle but was caught before he fled the scene,” Uko said.

    According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes Section 285 (10) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Mr Seun Abanida, counsel to the accused, pleaded with the court to grant bail to his client, promising that he would always attend court hearings.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abiodun Etti, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 and a surety who must provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    He adjourned the case till March 2 for further hearing.

  • Woman docked for alleged kidnapping

    For her alleged involvement in the kidnapping and robbing of a woman, Busola Folayemi, 27-year-old Munirat Yusuf was yesterday remanded in prison custody by an Akure Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ondo State.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Zakari Ibrahim, alleged that on May 2, at about 9.am, along Oyemekun Road, Akure, Ondo State capital, the accused and others at large, armed with dangerous weapons, allegedly kidnapped Busola, forced her into a taxi cab and drove her to an unknown destination.

    The victim was allegedly compelled to pay N800,000 ransom. The accused also allegedly robbed her of N300,000.

    The offence, according to Ibrahim, contravenes Section 6 (A) 1 (2) (A) and (B) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and Section 2 (11) (B) of the anti-kidnapping and Anti-Abduction Laws of Ondo State 2010.

    Ibrahim prayed the court to remand the accused person in prison custody to enable him send the duplicated case file to the Ministry of Justice for legal advice.

    Presiding Magistrate Johnson Adelegan ordered that the accused be remanded in Olokuta Maximum Prison, Akure. He adjourned the case till September 23 for mention.

  • Ex-UNIBEN don docked for alleged bribery

    A former Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Law in the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Okogeri Isu-Ochiora, has been arraigned before an Ekiadolor Magistrate’s Court for allegedly collecting N100,000 from a student to facilitate her transfer to another faculty.

    The offence was committed on December 31, last year, when the accused was a member of the Intra-Faculty Transfer Board.

    Isu- Ochiora was charged for fraud, an offence punishable under Section 98(b)(11) of the Criminal Code.

    A witness, Edoseghe Oghogho Idahosa, who is the Head of the University’s Intelligence Unit in the Security Department, told the court that the accused received the money from the student, who wanted to transfer from the Faculty of Arts to the Faculty of Law.

    Led by the State Counsel, Kenneth Ugiagbe, Edoseghe said they went into action, following intelligent reports and asked the student to play along.

    He said: “I confronted the accused about the money allegedly given to him by the student and ordered that his vehicle be searched.

    “He became shocked and dumfounded. I also cleared the way to enable him park his car at the security office but he sped off.”

    He said they pursued him with a motor bike to where the accused dropped the money in an exhaust pipe of an abandoned truck in a petrol station inside the school and drove off.

    The witness said the accused was apprehended near the fire-service station on the campus and taken to the security post for interrogation and N17, 000 was recovered from him while the N100, 000 was recovered from where it was hidden.

    The case was adjourned till August 21.

  • Beninnois, 21, docked for N2.9m theft

    The police have charged a 21-year-old man, Saidi Dorsa, before an Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing cash and properties valued N2.92 million.

    He is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing before Magistrate M.B. Folami.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nicholas Atumonye told the court that the defendant hails from Benin Republic.

    He said the defendant with others still at large committed the offence in September last year at 5, Ekund Street, Idimu, at 1:30pm.

    Atumonye said: “The defendant stole two generators valued at N130, 000; pumping machine worth N30, 000; gold chains valued at N870, 000; a brief case and clothes valued at N120, 000; and a cash sum of N1.8million belonging to Rufus Ogbidi.”

    He said the offence contravened Sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2011.

    Dorsa pleaded not guilty and was granted N1 million bail with two sureties in the like sum. The Magistrate adjourned the case till May 8 for trial.

    Also, 41-year-old Akeem Akinola was arraigned before the Magistrate for allegedly stealing N5.9 million belonging to a company, Yem Kem International.

    Akinola, a marketer with the company, was alleged to have obtained goods in March last year without remitting the money.

    Atumonye said Akinola, at 10:30am, at 205, Egbeda-Idimu Road, obtained goods worth N5.9 million under the pretence of selling same and remitting the proceeds into the company’s bank account.

    He said the defendant’s failure to either remit the money or return the goods, amounted to stealing from the company. Akinola pleaded not guilty and was granted N1 million bail with two sureties each in the like sum.

    The Magistrate said one of the sureties must not be below a magisterial position, adding that both sureties must depose to affidavit of means of livelihood as well as show evidence of tax payment from 2009 to 2012. She adjourned the matter till May 8 for definite trial.
