  • Doctor ‘dies’ of Lassa fever

An unidentified doctor with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, Abia State, has reportedly died of Lassa Fever.

It was gathered that she died at Irua Specialist Hospital, Esan Central, Edo State, where she was transferred for treatment.

Hospital sources said the patients were worried.

“The resident doctor was a new registrar in the paediatrics department. She treated a child at the children emergency ward and we are suspecting she got infected there,” a source said.

Another source said the doctor started working at the hospital barely one month before the incident, adding that she fell sick and was admitted to the Slessor Private ward of FMC between March 29 and 30.

She was transferred to Irua where the diagnosis was confirmed.

She allegedly died a few days after admission.

“Contact tracing and risk stratification are on. The hospital’s response team has been deployed.

“The doctors, we learnt, are not happy with the development, and are calling on the management to do something about their safety at work or they may be forced to stop work until their safety is guaranteed,” another source said.

Commissioner for Health Dr. John Ahukanna, his information counterpart John Okiyi and the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on health, Dr. Ikechukwu Nwabekee, could not be reached for comments.

  • Doctor in trouble for allegedly raping, impregnating patient’s 16-yr-old daughter

Doctor in trouble for allegedly raping, impregnating patient’s 16-yr-old daughter

A medical doctor attached to the Federal Medical Center, Bida, Niger State, is at the centre of a rape scandal which resulted in the death of the victim. Sixteen-year-old Fatima Yusuf was said to have given up the ghost a spell after childbirth after she was repeatedly raped and impregnated by a medical doctor attached to the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, Niger State.

The said doctor was said to have repeatedly raped the late Fatima while the latter was taking care of her mother while she was on admission in the hospital for a severe case of diabetes.

A family source, who spoke with our correspondent, quoted Fatima as telling the family that it all began on a day the doctor invited her to his room while her mother was asleep. The doctor, the source said, pretended that he was trying to advise Fatima only to seize the opportunity to forcibly have carnal knowledge of her. The secret act, she said, continued until Fatima’s mother was discharged from the hospital.

The family source, who pleaded not to be named because she was not qualified to speak for the family, said that when other family members discovered that Fatima was pregnant, they asked her who the father of the baby was and she fingered the said doctor, who vehemently denied having any sexual relationship with her.

The case, however, became so serious that the Emir of Bida, Alhaji Abubakar Yahaya, had to intervene in it. The accused doctor, in the course of interrogation at the Emir’s palace, was said to have admitted that he only hugged Fatima and rubbed his body against hers, but did not have any sexual intercourse with her. The deceased girl, on the other hand, was said to have stood by her word that the doctor forcibly slept with her, and the act resulted in her pregnancy.

The situation was said to have caused the Emir to order that a paternity test be conducted on the pregnancy. But while the Federal Medical Centre complied with the directive, it has been reluctant to release the result of the test, a situation that led to the decision to conduct another paternity test in a hospital outside the state.

Unfortunately, while this was going on, Fatima died on Monday some time after she was delivered of a baby boy at the family house in Bida.

Alarmed by the development, the Niger State Child Rights Agency was said to have taken over the case. The Director General of the agency, Barrister Mariam Kolo, who confirmed to our correspondent that the agency had taken up the case, said the agency’s attention was drawn to it because the victim was underage and because it was suspected that the management of the hospital was trying to cover up for the accused doctor.

Kolo said that while Fatima might have died, the agency would go ahead with the case and see to its logical conclusion. If Dr. Seyi is found guilty, she said, he will not escape the wrath of the law.

She said: “Even in the worst case scenario, a naive and underage girl like that cannot just accuse someone who is higher than her wrongly. If the man did not have carnal knowledge of her, she would not accuse him falsely. Why did she not accuse another doctor in the hospital? She even knew his office and how it looked like. Why did she stick to her story till she died in spite of pressures from all quarters?

“The family is not asking for money. They are only asking the doctor to own up and take responsibility for what he did. We are waiting for the DNA result. When it comes out, we will know who the father is. Government cannot take responsibility of the child when the father is alive.”

Kolo said the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, was trying to cover up the case, adding that the doctor was hiding under the guise that the result of the DNA test was not yet out and that he would not say anything until the test’s result was released.

Fatima, according to Kolo, died from intense depression because of the horrendous act the doctor committed against her.

“Although no autopsy was done, it was clear that she died out of intense depression,” she said.

“Look at this: her mother is ill, a man raped and impregnated her and denied it, and they do not have money to feed. He put her under intense depression. It is one of the factors that led to her death. He contributed to her psychological state of mind.” determined to rid the state of predators who prey on innocent victims and molest them. “This is a very sensitive matter. If medical doctors are now harassing children, it leaves one to wonder if our children are safe. ”

When contacted, the management of the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, acknowledged that a case of alleged sexual harassment was filed against one of its doctors, adding that the hospital was not covering up anybody.

The hospital’s Head of Communication, Musa Ladan, who spoke with our correspondent, said that a high powered committee had been set up by the management of the hospital to investigate the allegation.

Ladan said: “There is a case we are handling. It is not a case of cover-up by the hospital as it is being alleged in some quarters. The case is about a patient’s relation who accused one of our doctors of having carnal knowledge of her.

“It was brought to our attention and we have set up a high powered committee to investigate it. We have even gone ahead to do a DNA test and we are currently awaiting the result, although while we were waiting, the lady in question died in her family house. ”

On what was being done to the errant doctor, Ladan said that nothing was being done to him because the allegation had not been established.

He said: “We have to establish the accusation. Everything is at accusation level now. We have not done anything to the doctor because we are waiting for the result of the DNA test. After the result, we will know the step to take.”

He reiterated that there would be no cover-up as the hospital’s management had fully participated and supported all the investigations that were being done to establish the fact of the matter.

The Nation, however, learnt that there were plans to take the case to court following the death of the victim.

  • Police declare doctor wanted for alleged robbery

Police declare doctor wanted for alleged robbery

The FCT P, who is at large, is said to be the proprietor of Vital Care Hospital in Kubwa, Abuja.

He is alleged to be the leader of a robbery and car- snatching gang, which operates in Abuja.

The police yesterday paraded five members of his gang at the FCT Police Command headquarters.

They are Sunday Okhomode, Meshak James, Amusu Koku (a painter who specialises in changing the colours of stolen vehicles); Kunle Obajemi,(a printer who is an expert in changing chassis numbers on the dashboards) and Suleiman Isa, a goldsmith who buys stolen jewellery from the gang.

The police said four pistols with eight rounds of live ammunition and a face mask, hidden in a bag in the office of the doctor, were recovered during execution of a search warrant in the suspect’s hospital.

On how the gang operates, FCT Police Commissioner Sadiq Bello said: “I alerted the public last year to the activities of a robbery gang, whose modus operandi is to gain access to homes by blaring horns at the gates.

“These criminals, who operate in the evening, come in heavily-tinted vehicles. When they get to the entrance of their victims, they will blare the horns, the gatemen will assume they are family members, or relations, or friends. They will open the gates. Then the hoodlums will rob the occupants of their cars and other valuables, especially jewellery.”

He went on: “I am happy to tell you today that the FCT Command has bust one of the gangs responsible for such evil acts.

“The gang is led by Dr. Ola Solomon Jimade, the proprietor of Vital Care Hospital in Kubwa, who is on the run. Five members of the gang have been arrested. They are cooperating with the police.

“The arrest followed a reported case of robbery at a house in Maitama, Abuja last November when a BMW X6 vehicle, quantities of gold and other valuables worth millions of naira were stolen by the robbers.

“Upon receipt of complaint, the command through the Specia1 Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) began discreet investigation, which led to the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the vehicle.

“During investigation, five vehicles, whose colours have been changed, were recovered. Four of them have been identified by their owners, who were robbed at gunpoint.

“If anybody knows the whereabouts of Dr. Jimade, said to be an indigene of Ife Olukotun community in Yagba East, Kogi State, he should report at the nearest police station.”

The command also nabbed Destiny Abang, who hails from Boki East in Cross River State.

He was arrested while trying to steal a car from where it was parked in Area 8, Garki, Abuja.

The CP said: “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to have stolen cars in Garki and its environs. Most of the vehicles were taken to Boki in Cross River State where they were sold. Discreet investigation led to the recovery of the 13 stolen cars.”

He said investigation was on to recover more vehicles and arrest other members of the gang.

The police boss urged car owners to install anti-theft gadgets in their vehicles, to reduce thefts.

  • Mutilation affects child birth, says doctor

A paediatrician at Enugu State Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Dr. Juliet Ochi, has said Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) can cause difficulty in child birth.

She told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu yesterday that FGM could also deny women sexual satisfaction.

“One of the problems a girl-child is likely to experience due to mutilation is lack of sexual satisfaction when she grows into adulthood, because the exercise involves cutting off part of her genital organ that helps a woman to get satisfaction sexually,” Ochi said.

She added that the cutting of the clitoris could lead to difficulty in child delivery because the part cut off could no longer stretch, as such, difficulty in giving birth would occur.

The doctor said most of the mutilations caused health problems.

She said the exercise could lead to excessive bleeding by the child, which could result in death.

The World Health Organisation said: “Female genital mutilation includes procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organ for non-medical reasons and health benefits for girls and women.

UNILAG student was raped, doctor tells court

An Ikeja High Court heard yesterday how two brothers, Bright Nwachukwu and Chijindu Nwachukwu raped and defrauded an undergraduate of the University of Lagos (Unilag).

Bright, 32 and Chijindu, 24, are facing a three-count charge of obtaining under false pretences and rape before Justice Josephine Oyefeso.

They were alleged to have accosted the 21-year-old undergraduate on February 12, 2016, on her way to the campus for medical clearance.

Led in evidence by the prosecuting counsel, Mrs C. K Tunji-Carrena,  Dr Alagbe Oyedeji of the Department of Family Medicine, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH)  said he was testifying on behalf of one Dr Sholaja, who   prepared a report dated February 13, 2016.

He described Sholaja as his colleague, adding that the doctor was no longer with LASUTH.

The witness, a consultant/examiner with Mirabel Centre, which handles rape and related cases,  said his job entailed “examination, treatment and writing of reports or examination findings on victims of sexual assault.”

“Being an examiner and also someone experienced in the day-to-day activities of the Mirabel Centre, I’m here to interpret the examination findings,” he said.

The  findings, he said,  started from when the client entered into the examination room,  pointing out that she was found to be quiet and willing to give information. He said the victim was in good state of mind, alert and well-oriented about time and place.

“The gross physical findings indicate that there are no significant injuries to her physical structure. Significant findings on her genitalia indicate injuries; there was a focus of injury to the entrance of the urethra. The hymen had injuries called  lacerations and the posterior forcet had superficial lacerations”, he stated.

Oyedeji explained that the doctor concluded that his  findings were consistent with the victim’s claim that she had forceful penetration into her private parts,  adding :  “the force in this case, as described by the victim happened to be the male organ.”

Under cross-examination by Mr Oganihu Nwosu, the defence counsel, the doctor admitted that the complainant never  named the defendants as those who raped her.

He also noted that the examination report revealed that the victim had a genital infection before the rape.

“Part of the report said that there was a copious discharge on the client’s genitalia. Analysis was not done on the discharge and it was observed that the client had a staphylococcus infection,” Oyedeji said.

The trial resumes on February 19.

    •Minister alerts on meningitis outbreak

Ebonyi State government yesterday confirmed the death of a doctor and a nurse from a renewed Lassa fever outbreak in the state.

Commissioner for Health Dr Daniel Onwuzurike spoke with reporters in Abakaliki. He noted that the deceased were working at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA).

Onwuzurike said 12 samples had been collected and tested for possible detection with four testing positive to the dreaded disease.

“Apart from the two confirmed deaths, we have not confirmed whether another doctor who worked in the hospital died of the disease as he was known to be diabetic.

“He was being managed for blood-sugar derangement and has been on self-medication for malaria and typhoid fever before his death.

“We will still confirm whether he died of Lassa fever and have also commenced the tracing of possible contacts of another suspected victim, a FETHA staff but a resident doctor at Afikpo,’’ he said.

The commissioner said the contact-tracing for all suspected cases would end today, while the victims would be placed on the stipulated 21-day surveillance required for full confirmation.

“It is, however, pertinent to note that the disease’s index case (suspected source) survived after being treated by doctors and has been discharged.

“We urge indigenes of the state not to panic because the outbreak is an isolated one and not an epidemic as erroneously being speculated.

“The state government has intervened tremendously by providing needed resources and logistics such as drugs needed for its treatment.

“We have also contacted the federal ministry of health on the issue and it has pledged to immediately send needed commodities and manpower to complement our efforts,’’ he said.

He debunked the insinuation that the samples and suspected patients have been referred to the General Hospital, Irrua in Edo as the South-East Virology Centre Abakaliki, constructed by the state government was functional.

“We no longer experience panic or pandemonium in hospitals and in the state whenever such cases are reported because our virology centre effectively handles all reported cases.

“There was also no panic among doctors, nurses and patients at FETHA on Sunday as we only fumigated its premises and evacuated patients, especially those at the accident and emergency section,’’ he said.

Umezurike said the ministry was in collaboration with the FETHA management and relevant health stakeholders in the state, assuring the people that the situation was under control.

“We will sustain our enlightenment campaigns over the media and relevant avenues on the need for people to maintain adequate hygiene and immediately report suspected cases to relevant authorities,’’ he said.

Minister of Health Prof Isaac Adewole yesterday urged Nigerians to look out for suspected cases of meningitis.

Prof Adewole spoke in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital at the weekend while sharing with the members of Network of Reproductive Health Journalists of Nigeria.

The minister said:” That is why we are saying Nigerians should be on the lookout for it. It is so easy to treat. The vaccine is expensive.  When a case is detected we have an epidemic threshold then we quickly vaccinate people in the local governments, that is the best we can do for now.  When we are more prosperous then we can vaccinate everybody.

“The conjugate is about $20 a vial, while the polyvalent is $3 a vial, so you can calculate what we need for the Nigeria population, and that is for just the vaccine, not including the syringes and other consumables; so, our best bet is to alert Nigerians that this is the season for meningitis and they should beware. We need to contain it.”

He went on: “Meningitis is seasonal and this is the season and we are alerting Nigerians. The terrible outbreak we had in 2017 was because it was on for three months before we got to know. All of us know what meningitis is, it requires a lumbar puncture; look at the fluid cerebrospinal fluid. When you check and it is milky, then you know there is infection and you can culture it and begin treatment.

“It is so easy to treat because the causative organism is responsive to antibiotics, but when we do not know that it is meningitis, we could treat malaria for three to five days, typhoid for one week then by the time we get to know, it would have spread. And it spreads like wildfire. As we attend to patients, 10 people can surround the infected person and that one patient would infect six or seven persons and it spreads like that. So, this is the season to alert people to look out and promptly report any suspicion to nearest health facility.

“The government does not have enough money to vaccinate the whole country.”

  • Doctor uses film for mental health awareness

Doctor uses film for mental health awareness

Pinnacle Medicals Speakout initiative in conjunction with Derwin productions have come out with a movie, ‘Little Drops of Happy,’ to campaign for mental health awareness.

The movie which was produced and directed by Grace Edwin Okon premiered recently at  Silverbird Galleria, Victoria Island, Lagos, features actors like Ayoola Ayoola, Osa, Ngozi Nwosu, Seun , Ijeoma Onyeato of Channels and Lisa Omorodion.

In the movie, Mano Ojo has to deal with domestic violence and the infidelity of her husband which leads to a series of challenges she has to confront and overcome. She is misunderstood  and termed  mentally deranged. Nevertheless, Mano in the midst of her chaotic experience of dealing with depression and post-partum depression, has to save not just herself , but her estranged husband as well, from his promiscuous stance.

Kadiri says she wants to change the narrative to let people know that mental illnesses are real just like hypertension and diabetes.

”And we need to show people empathy and give them support like we give people that have cancer,” she said.

“So, ‘Little Drops of Happy’ was borne out of the fact that we are seeing more cases of depression in Nigeria and suicide too. It covers mainly issues of depression, postpartum depression, that is common among women. It sends a strong message but in an entertaining way.”

Speaking further on the movie, Kadiri explained that  ”depression is a medical condition, not a spiritual attack  and the people should stop being in denial because it will not help in good treatment outcome, so, letting them know that depression is real but the good news is that depression is treatable.

“Apart from healthy diet, regular exercises, sleeping adequately, people need to get healthy support system around them because a healthy support system will help you seek for that much needed help if you cannot seek for help. And of course, if you have depression and the doctor says that you need medication, please take that medication will help you live a functional and productive life.

“So, management of depression are basically, counselling therapy, medication or the combination of all.

“The movie which is already in the cinemas nationwide is for people to understand that when you have these depressive symptoms do not go taking different concoctions thinking that it will help you it is another roadmap to addiction and substance addiction is more difficult to manage or treat that depression. So, go to the right place, the right people, the time is now.”

The Pinnacle Medicals Speakout initiative is a project of Dr Maymunnah Yussuf  Kadiri,  a consultant neuro psychiatrist and a mental health advocate who runs Pinnacle medical services limited.

  • Another doctor tests positive for Lassa fever at LUTH

Another doctor tests positive for Lassa fever at LUTH

Another doctor has tested positive for Lassa fever at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

She is among the doctors that first had close contact with the index case.

Yesterday, LUTH said, she had treatment and was expected to recover soon.

She is the fourth doctor to test positive for the disease; three other doctors, who earlier tested positive to the disease, LUTH Chief Medical Director (CMD) Prof Chris Bode, said, had been certified fit and discharged.

Bode said psychological and other supports had been provided for the patient adding that her family contacts were being closely monitored.

He said: “Seventy of the contacts being followed up have also been let off, having completed their period of observation.”

According to him, over 400 workers of the hospital attended a “special workshop” on viral haemorrhagic fever last Wednesday, during which various aspects of the contagious ailment were discussed.

The importance of a high index of suspicion; early diagnosis and referral were highlighted to medical workers who were also enjoined to observe universal precautions while attending to any patient who may be suspected of having Lassa fever, Bode said.

“There is a fully equipped response squad available round the clock to assess and take over the management of any suspected cases in the hospital,” he said.

The CMD added that various meetings have been held with doctors and other members of staff to reinforce these messages. Trainings have also been conducted and are ongoing for staff at the forefront of patients’ care.

He said: “Both the Federal Ministry of Health and the Lagos State Ministry of Health have supported LUTH with the provision of more drugs and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), follow-up services and decontamination.  Free hand sanitisers have been deployed to various wards.  An NGO (Ebola Containment Trust Fund) has provided 10 telephones and airtime for the use of our Lassa Fever Response Team in LUTH.

“The team has been beefed up by several volunteer staff who are working assiduously to overcome this dreaded disease and we are optimistic, buoyed by the successful discharge of those three doctors who had earlier tested positive.  An internal enquiry has been set up to audit possible breaches in established service protocols and any other reasons that resulted in the hospital personnel getting infected.”

Bode said the disease was gradually tapering off, “but we must remain vigilant while ongoing efforts are maintained to control the disease.”

See How my Husband Added Extra Inches to make His Manhood size BIGGER and Last 35 minutes

My name is Mrs.Aduke, and my husband and I have been married for 6 years. The truth about it is that throughout our marriage, my husband has never been able to satisfy me in bed.

I have never been able to get an orgasm from him. Often time I complain that his penis is too small and he cannot last more than a minute on top of me.

Later on, I noticed that it became worse, my husband’s penis size was reducing or shrinking in size… his manhood became very small. Also, he is not able to sustain an erection and always have a poor sex drive.

As a woman, I always pick quarrels with him that his sexual performance is too poor, but most time he blames it on the nature of his job, and advancement in age.

Several times, my husband used drugs like viapro, vega100, viagra, but it only had a temporary effect and he had to stop using them because the products have a side effect on his health.

It was a painful experience for me.

When my husband is erect, his penis size is approximately 3inches which is too small to satisfy me. I became frustrated with our marriage and started to use sex toys and masturbate.

Sadly, 3 things made my husband useless in bed…

    1) his manhood was really small and can hardly make me cum. I do not enjoy the sex at all

    2) his weak erections was really an issue, and it affected his self esteem and his sexual performance

    3) he releases in just 40 seconds, and after that he cannot go another round, he has no sexual stamina at all

Because of this, our marriage became sexless for over 3 years.

I almost packed out of the house because I could not see myself living with a man that cannot satisfy me in bed or make me feel like a woman.

Best part is that, the enlargement oil is for external use, and it’s safe and has no side effect at all.

My husband started using the enlargement oil and within 2 weeks we were seeing noticeable increment in size (from 3inches to 5.2inches).  His manhood is increasing in both length and girth and becoming longer and fatter.

The enlargement oil helps delay your ejaculation time, to make you last longer.

It also strengthens your manhood and cures your weak erections.

So the enlargement oil helped my husband go up to 20minutes when having sex with me and continuous application of the oil increased his manhood size to 6.5inches.

What he simply does is to use the enlargement oil to massage his manhood and testicles in the evening before going to bed.

The enlargement oil is safe, it has no side effects and its for external use only.

A 74-year-old doctor, in Aba, Abia State, identified as Dr. Mbakwe, has killed himself with a gun.

Mbakwe, a resident of Abayi in Osisioma Local Government, was bedridden with an undisclosed ailment for about thirty years.

Sources attributed the man’s action to frustration due to his condition.

It was learnt the Abayi Police Division, where the matter was reported by the victim’s family, has begun investigation.

In a similar development, the body of Mr. Obinna Obi, a butcher at Cemetery Market, was found in his home on 4 Aguata Street, off Omuma road in Aba South Local Government, on Wednesday.

He was allegedly killed by his wife, Onyinyechi.

Sources said trouble ensued between the couple after his wife turned down several pleas for sex, which didn’t go down well with the man. Others said they had minor altercations that morning.

But a source on the street said the couple had never had it smooth. According to him, the deceased was recently admitted in the hospital after his wife allegedly stabbed him with a scissors during a fight.

Police spokesman Geoffrey Ogbonna confirmed the incidents.

According to Ogbonna, the doctor had been sick for about 30years, saying he probably committed suicide due to the prolonged sickness.

Ogbonna said Obi’s wife is being questioned, adding that an autopsy would be done to ascertain the real cause of his death.

“We learnt that the woman, in March, stabbed the husband with a scissors after which he was hospitalised. The law says if a man dies one year and a day after sustaining any serious injury, the person who inflicted the injury would be held liable.

“In this case, it is not up to one year that he was hospitalised and discharged that he was stabbed by the wife again; that was why the wife was arrested.

“But the deceased brothers said he had been having chest pain. But the true cause of his death will be determined through autopsy. But his wife is in our custody,” Ogbonna added.
