EPL: Dominic Solanke scores twice as Tottenham beat Aston Villa from behind

Dominic Solanke scored twice as Tottenham came from behind to earn victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League.

The £65m summer signing doubled his league goal tally for the season with two goals in four second-half minutes as Ange Postecoglou’s side climbed to seventh in the table.

Solanke put Spurs ahead with a delightful first by lifting the ball over the onrushing Emiliano Martinez from Dejan Kulusevski’s pass, before Richarlison picked out his team-mate to slot in and put a late fightback beyond Villa.

Morgan Rogers had given Villa the lead with the game’s first shot on target after 32 minutes, profiting after Spurs failed to deal with Lucas Digne’s in-swinging corner.

The visitors, denied an opener less than two minutes earlier when Amadou Onana’s header hit the post, were impressively organised and successfully absorbed large spells of pressure in the first half.

But that good work was undone within four minutes of the restart when Brennan Johnson met Son Heung-min’s excellent cross from the left, transforming the atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and laying the foundations for his side’s latest comeback.

Substitute James Maddison then added a fourth with a wonderful free-kick deep in stoppage-time as Spurs repeated their 4-1 win from a goal behind against West Ham in their previous home league game.

Victory ensured Tottenham reduced the gap to the top four following last week’s loss at Crystal Palace, with fourth-placed Arsenal two points ahead, as fifth-placed Villa missed the chance to go third.”

The Move according to talkSPORT, will see former Under 23 ace Umar Sadiq return to Roma after failing to impress Steven Gerrard during his own loan spell.

Solanke joined Liverpool in 2017 after the expiration of his contract with Chelsea. He was officially confirmed as a Liverpool player on 10 July 2017. He made his debut for the club on 16 August 2017, coming on as a substitute for Roberto

  • Dominic Solanke: I’m a ‘born winner’

After completing his summer move from Chelsea, Liverpool youngster Dominic Solanke provided an insight into why he decided to join the Reds.

Solanke arrives after sealing the U20 World Cup with England, also being awarded the Golden Ball as player of the tournament in South Korea.

And having also won the FA Youth Cup twice and the UEFA Youth League once with Chelsea, as well as the European U17 Championship at international level, Solanke arrives with a proven pedigree.

On sealing his switch to Merseyside, Solanke described himself as a “born winner,” as well as explaining the variety of roles he is able to perform in attack.

“My favourite position would probably be the striker, No. 9,” he said.

“But I can play behind the striker in the No. 10 position or out wide, so I’m quite versatile.” The Basingstoke native also revealed why he chose to join the Reds, having received some encouragement from two of his team-mates at the World Cup this summer.

“As a young player you always want to see your club pushing through their young players and hoping you can do the same,” he explained.

“I’m quite good friends with Joe Gomez, I’ve known him from quite young, and obviously Ovie [Ejaria] and Sheyi [Ojo] who were with us at the World Cup.

“I think Liverpool have got a lot of good young players, so hopefully everyone can play their part.

“We spoke a bit and they’ve only got good things to say, so I’m looking forward to enjoying it with them.”

Naturally, the prospect of working under Klopp is also a major deciding factor for any young player, and Solanke is no different. “I’m so excited. Every time I see him he’s so enthusiastic and passionate,” he said of his new manager.

“I think that’s what you need as a manager, so I’m really looking forward to working with him.

“As a young player all you want to do is reach your full potential, so to have good players around you and a good manager to help that will be really good.

“I just want to make an impact. Hopefully when I get my opportunity I can take it and help the team.”

Solanke is expected to begin the campaign with the Liverpool U23s, but can expect to be given chances to perform at first-team level, too.

His first opportunity could come this pre-season, with the friendly against Tranmere Rovers the ideal backdrop for the youngster to showcase his wares.

Solanke was part of the England squad that won the 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. He was the tournament’s joint top scorer with four goals in four appearances. Nigeria is yet to officially approach the 17-year-old player.

Solanke, Abraham team up against Brazil

Dominic Solanke and Lewis Cook have been added to Gareth Southgate’s England squad ahead of Tuesday’s friendly international against Brazil, just as Tammy Abraham who recently opted to play for England as against Nigeria also made the list.

The pair will join goalkeeper Angus Gunn who was called up on Friday as a replacement for Jack Butland.

The trio played in Friday’s Under-21 international against Ukraine in Kiev, and they returned to England to join the senior squad on Saturday evening.

Liverpool’s Solanke and Bournemouth midfielder Cook were both members of England’s U20 squad, which earlier this year were crowned world champions at their age group level.

Striker Solanke has appeared in seven Premier League games this season, while Cook has played in four for the Cherries.

Cook was England’s skipper when they lifted the U20 World Cup in Korea, five months ago.

Cook‏ tweeted on Saturday: “Incredibly honoured and proud to be called up for England senior squad. Huge achievement for me and my family.”

As for Gunn, he is currently on loan at Norwich City from Manchester City, and has represented England at five different age-group levels.

Meanwhile, Phil Jones has been ruled out of the game against Brazil after being substituted during the first half of the match with Germany due to a thigh injury.

Updated England squad: Tammy Abraham, Ryan Bertrand, Gary Cahill, Lewis Cook, Jack Cork, Eric Dier, Joe Gomez, Angus Gunn, Joe Hart, Michael Keane, Jesse Lingard, Jake Livermore, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Harry Maguire, Jordan Pickford, Marcus Rashford, Danny Rose, Dominic Solanke, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Jamie Vardy, Kyle Walker, Ashley Young

Solanke scores for Liverpool in league Asia Trophy

Dominic Solanke scored his first goal for Liverpool to help secure a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League Asia Trophy on Wednesday.

The England Under-21 international fired in a brilliant strike in the 61st minute to open his Liverpool scoring account after his summer move from Chelsea.

Divock Origi netted the second 18 minutes later to set up a meeting with Leicester in the final of the tournament in Hong Kong on Saturday.

Palace will face West Brom after they were beaten on penalties by the Foxes in the first match of the day at the Hong Kong Stadium.

New Palace manager Frank De Boer opted for three at the back in his first match against Premier League opposition, with Andros Townsend and Jeffrey Schlupp as wing-backs.

The duo, along with the lively Wilfried Zaha, provided Palace’s attacking outlets, although they were on the back foot for much of the match.

Daniel Sturridge had Liverpool’s first chance in the 13th minute when his shot from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s low cross was blocked by Scott Dann.

Sturridge’s clever backheeled pass then teed up Adam Lallana, but he blazed over the bar.

The pacey Mohamed Salah looked threatening for the Reds and fired a left-footed shot over after cutting in from the right.

Keshi Anderson saw a shot saved at the other end after a reverse pass from Townsend, before Wayne Hennessey kept out an effort across goal from Sturridge.

Liverpool made a raft of changes at the start of the second half and one of them, Philippe Coutinho, went close with a shot from outside the box in the 54th minute.

Solanke broke the deadlock on the hour mark when he collected Origi’s clever flick and fired across goal and into the bottom corner.

Palace struggled to create chances despite an impressive display from Zaha, who vented his frustration after being clipped from behind by Marko Grujic.

Minutes later Grujic shot wide from distance before Origi scored Liverpool’s second, finishing from close range after Coutinho’s shot was blocked.

FIFA U-20 W/Cup: Solanke fires England to semi finals

Dominic Solanke fired England into their first FIFA Under-20 World Cup semi-final since 1993 as they saw off Mexico despite Josh Onomah’s controversial red card.

Liverpool youngster Solanke showed superb composure to tuck home England’s winning goal two minutes into the second-half, as they set up a semi-final encounter with Italy on Thursday.

But Paul Simpson’s Young Lions were forced to endure a nervous finale in South Korea after Tottenham midfielder Onomah was shown a second yellow card for accidentally treading on the boot of a Mexico player.

Replays showed that Onomah unintentionally made contact with his opponent after he had dribbled beyond him on the right-hand side with 18 minutes left and Simpson described the decision as ‘absolutely ridiculous.’

England held on, however, to advance to the last four of this tournament for the first time since the likes of Nicky Barmby, David Unsworth and Chris Bart-Williams achieved it 24 years ago.

Simpson was pleased with England’s resolve but criticised the sending off decision, which means Onomah will miss the Italy game.

He said: ‘I’m absolutely delighted, it was a really, really tough game today against an excellent Mexico side.

‘I thought we defended for our lives when we had to and created some really good chances in the attacking phases, but didn’t quite have the finish.

‘Unfortunately towards the end of the game we had to dig in with our backs to the wall and I’ve got to say, it is an incredible and poor decision to send Josh off.

‘I have no idea what the referee saw. I understand that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) doesn’t work for that kind of decision which is a real shame because it made it a real tough game and we have a player now suspended for a World Cup semi-final for a decision that is absolutely ridiculous.’

The other semi-final will see Uruguay play Venezuela.

  • Solanke to seal £3m deal with Liverpool

Solanke to seal £3m deal with Liverpool

Nigeria born England Youth international Dominic Solanke is to sign a £20,000 per week, £3m deal with Liverpool when his contract with Chelsea expires next month.

Solanke has chosen to continue his career at Anfield, having decided to let his terms at Stamford Bridge run down.

Liverpool will have to pay compensation as he is under 23 but the fee will be determined by tribunal. It is anticipated Solanke will end up costing Liverpool in the region of £3million. He will sign a contract worth around £20,000 per week.

There was significant interest in Solanke, headed by Celtic and RB Leipzig as well as clubs from the Premier League, but he has been attracted to the idea of working with Jurgen Klopp and forming the nucleus of a promising crop of young talent that includes Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Woodburn and Harry Wilson.

The 19-year-old forward, who spent last season on loan at Vitesse Arnhem, is currently at the Under 20 World Cup with England.

Chelsea failed to find middle ground over a contract agreement for Solanke, but the Premier League champions will get compensation from his switch to Liverpool which they would have missed out on had he opted to move abroad.

Manager Antonio Conte confirmed that he expected the talented young forward to depart this summer with his club failing to meet his wage demands in February.

‘I think this is his will,’ Conte. ‘This question is better to ask him. I think for a young player to stay in a great team is a great opportunity.

Solanke has been a prolific goalscorer throughout Chelsea’s youth ranks having been at the club from Under 8 level.

Tall, pacy and powerful, he was earmarked for an England future by Jose Mourinho before scoring seven goals on loan at Vitesse last year.  Solanke has represented England at all youth team levels.  He was part of the England squad that won the 2014 UEFA European Under 17 Championship.  He was the tournaments joint scorer with four goals in four appearances.

Solanke was named in the 2016 UEFA European Under-19 Championship squad, alongside fellow Chelsea players, Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham, and Isaiah Brown, is eligible to represent Nigeria courtesy of his descent

Bayern Munich are showing interest in wantaway Chelsea striker Dominic Solanke.

The talented 19-year-old is highly regarded by clubs in this country but the financial package he is seeking is considered a risk by many.

Solanke and his family are looking for wages of around £50,000-a-week while Chelsea could still command a tribunal fee of round £8million.

The highly-rated striker joined Chelsea in 2004 and has spent his entire career with the Stamford Bridge club.

He scored seven goals in 25 league games while on loan at Vitesse last season. He has played 17 minutes for Chelsea’s first-team in a single appearance.

However, should he move abroad, clubs would only need to pay out an initial £300,000 in compensation.

Bayern’s coaching staff are well aware of England U21 international Solanke who can play as a winger or striker; and like the fact that technically he is very good, is a good size and he has pace.

The Germans would be unlikely to commit to £50,000-a-week but can offer an incentive-laden contract with Solanke keen to make a first-team breakthrough wherever he goes.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte acknowledged on Friday that Solanke is set to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer when his contract runs out.

Liverpool have been linked but are understood to be weighing up other options instead which include Bayer Leverkusen’s

Julian Brandt and Demarai Gray at Leicester City.

Everton, Sunderland, Arsenal, West Ham, Rangers and Celtic have discussed offers for Solanke too.
