    Church, hospital promote blood donation

It is not often that churches hold blood donation campaigns. But the Catholic Church of the Annuciation, FESTAC, Lagos blazed the trail when its members came out to donate blood. Joseph Eshanokpe reports

Catholic Church of the Annuciation, FESTAC Town, and Mother and Child Hospital, Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos have held a blood donation camp at the church’s premises.

The Dean of FESTAC Deanry and Parish Priest, Rev Father Jerome Akinyemi, said the church embarked on the campaign to save lives. ”Blood is life,” he said, adding that Jesus saved lives and that it was imperative for Christians to do so by donating blood. He said he was glad that his church had keyed in to this teaching of Jesus. ”As we save lives, ours will not be lost,” he prayed.

Catholic Men Organisation (CMO) Chairman Prof Nat Ofo, who was the first donor at the event, described the programme as a huge success, adding that it would be good for it to be held quarterly.

He compared blood donation to alms giving, saying both are works of charity. ”It is not only when you give money that you are charitable. When you donate blood, you are also giving,” he said.

The Medical Officer in charge of the camp, Dr Peter Aderz, said the camp was held to boost the government’s blood bank. He explained: ”When you go to the hospital, you will see many children and women in need of blood. That is why the church is partnering the government to provide blood for the ‘needy’ at a low price. ”It is the poorest that need blood. We would have advised the government to give out the blood free but for the cost it would incur in screening it,” he said.

Aderza said this was the church’s first blood donation drive and hoped it would generate between 50 and 100 Spints. ”In Catholic Church we believe in blood donation. Anything that can give life, we support it,” he said.

The medic also said not everyone could donate blood, no matter his interest. Before anybody could donate, he explained, he would be screened for diseases, weight, blood sugar level, among others, to know if he is qualified. He listed the merits of blood donation as removal of excess blood, free radicals and cholestrol from the body. He dismissed insinuations that blood donation could lead to sudden death, sickness or blood shortage.  ”Once one donates, within three weeks, he would regain his blood level,” he said.

Miss Odunola Olaoke of Mother and Child Hospital described the response of the parishioners to the campaign as great. She said though the camp was open to the public, only the church members and their priest responded. She said the aim of the camp was to tackle the problem of blood shortage in the government hospitals, and that people should not be afraid to donate.  And as they do so, she said, their sicknesses would be cured.

Ms Olaoke also said the blood would be handed over to the officials of the state Blood Transfusion Service (BTS), who were at the event, for screening and distribution.

During the handing over, Rev Fr Akinyemi thanked the hospital management for the collaboration and for making the camp a success. ”Give our regards to the hospital’s management. We appreciate them. Step up the good work you are doing,” he added.

  • Kelwaran, Rotary promote blood donation

Industrial giant Kelwaran Chanrai and Rotary Club of Lagos Island have rallied over 50 of their workers and members to donate huge pints of blood to the state blood bank.

At the campaign, which held on the premises of Kelwaran on the Lagos-Apapa Expressway, Isolo, the company’s Group Managing Director (GMD) Mr Siva Subramanian said the event was aimed boosting the state government’s blood bank.

“We have been doing it on December 7 in the last six years to commemorate our chairman who died in an accident in Yola, Maiduguri,” he said, adding that the response was getting better.

He allayed fears over blood donation, saying various tests are carried before one is certified to donate and that there are no dangers or side effects.

A Rotarian and medic Chief Anil Grover said he had been donating blood in the last 15 years and that it was good to donate. “I want to advise Nigerians to have a culture of blood donation. It’s safe, useful and good for every one,” he added.

Lagos Rotary Club’s President Sanjeev Tandon said the event is held yearly as one of the association’s focal areas. He thanked Kelwaran for partnering the club, saying their aim was to generate at least 1,000 pints of blood out of the 7,000 needed by the government.

An official of the state Blood Transfusion Services said the blood would be taken to its offices for screening and given to the public free. However they would pay N4,500 for what she called “crossmatching”. The money is not for the blood but the cost of compatibility, she said. She advised the public to ensure that the blood they buy carries their logo to avoid purchasing the wrong item.

  • Rotary drives voluntary blood donation

    Rotary drives voluntary blood donation

Nigerians have been urged to make blood donation a way of life.

The Medical Director of a diagnostic facility, Paramount Life Care, FESTAC, Lagos, Kenechukwu Obianodo, made the appeal at the blood donation camp organised by  the clinic with Rotary Club of Lagos-Palm Grove Estate, Nigeria (District 91100), as part of activities to celebrate Nigeria’s 57th independence.

Obianodo said his facility partnered Rotary Club in blood donation because it has the equipment.

“Blood donation is good. It leaves the donor better. And because we have fully automated pathology, we are good to go.”

The club’s President, Atul Kshetry, said the reason for the donation was to  ensure that those in need of blood do not die due to lack of blood supply, and to encourage voluntary blood donation among Nigerians. The best gift to commemorate this 57th independence is to give blood because blood is life, he said.

Kshetry said the club has a blood donation camp, which ensures monthly voluntary donation by volunteers.

He said the club targets not less than 30 pints of blood. “The need for blood donation is very important because there is a huge shortage of same. The act of voluntary blood donation is not common in Nigeria, as in other parts of the world. By the Blood camp, we are creating awareness on the importance of voluntary blood donation, just as we also are targeting free donation of 1, 000 pints of blood. That will make blood sufficiently available through the Red Cross Club.”

Kshetry said the major challenge facing the committee is to motivate Nigerians to donate blood voluntarily.

“This is because Nigerians do not have the culture of donation. That is similar to India some 30 years ago. There was no culture but over time, the culture was built up. But in Africa, the problem still persists. This camp was done in collaboration with Paramount Life Care and the Lagos State Transfusion Blood Services (LSTBS),” he said.

Obianodo added: “Pathology is the study of the overall response of your body to any foreign influence, i.e., disease. Actually, we use this knowledge to diagnose and treat your ailment. What we do is to carefully compare the normal structure and function of a human body (anatomy and physiology) to the abnormal structure and function we witness in an unwell human.

‘’Doing this is the most crucial phase and we take note of even the minutest details while adjudging the extent of your ailment because one slip can lead to an incorrect diagnosis, posing serious threat to your health. Our experts ensure that they are extremely careful while analysing the samples.

“Paramount Life Care offers a  menu of pathology tests in its laboratory. We also provide a range of diagnostic assays covering. The  automated lab features includes: Barcoding of every tub,  zero-contact’ collection in vaccutainer, bullet sample transfer from collection room to lab, processing on automated track, direct interfacing of results from equipment to reporting software.

‘’We provide a range of diagnostic assays covering hematology, clinical chemistry, immunology, endocrinology, microbiology and parasitology, molecular biology,  cytology and histopathology,” he explained.

He said this month was for prevention and screening for breast cancer.

“Digital mammography is the most advanced equipment for the early detection of breast abnormalities. Early detection provides the best chance to treat breast cancer successfully.

‘’To assist women stay cancer free, we have other state-of-the-art women’s imaging services, such as full-field digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and stereotactic biopsy.”

  • Blood donation is harmless, says agency

It  is not harmful to donate blood, Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service Executive Secretary Mrs Modupe Olaiya has said

She spoke at the maiden monthly Rotary Clubs’blood donation camp held at the Rotary International Centre in Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

She said the aim of the programme was to get enough blood to save lives, adding that only human beings and not animals could do so. Unless people donate, she warned, more lives would be lost. The shortage of blood plaguing most hospitals, she said, was preventable through more blood donation.

Mrs Olaiya said we need between 70,000 and 100,000 units of blood yearly, adding that with a target of between 5,000 and 6,000 units monthly, we could make it.

She said the state government was partnering Rotary to mobilise more people to donate blood voluntarily, noting that freewill donation is safer compared to when donors are induced with money.

She said the Service has stationary units where people could walk in and donate as well as a publicity division for awareness.

Last weekend, six clubs led by the Rotary Club of Palmgrove Estate held a camp to encourage members for blood donation.

A former president of Rotary Club of Palmgrove Ramesh Bismal said the event was an initiative of the club during his tenure in 2014. He said the aim was to save lives, adding that one bottle of blood could save three lives. “We are targeting 1,000 bottles of blood in the district. It is a signatory project of the district. So far, or in one and half years, we have 690 bottles of blood from Palmgrove Estate.”

He said the seven clubs would hold the blood donation camp monthly until they achieved their objective. Later, the programme would go national. “In Africa only few are donating blood, yet more people need blood. We will go to the markets, corporate organisations and media houses, among others to encourage people to donate voluntarily. We need the media to assist to create awareness on blood donation and remove doubts about the matter,” he said

On the merits of blood donation, Bismal, a notable chartered accountant, said:  “Once you donate, you get a card which entitles you to free blood when you are in an emergency. Or your family members. Also, you are also free to check your blood.”

Among those who donated blood at the camp was Rotary International District Governor-elect Dr Wale Ogunbadejo. He shares his experience. ”It was nothing new. I have been donating blood for 27 years. Our aim is to make blood donation more friendly. And save lives. We want awareness to be strong.

“We are partnering the Lagos State government because we don’t have a blood bank for the blood to kept for use at hospitals.”

Ogunbadejo dispelled the myth about the donation of blood, saying that people should not be afraid to donate. He said before one donates, he would be tested to know if he could. He said any one above 65 and some categories of women are not allowed to donate.

He warned that more people would die if we stopped donating blood. “Take blood donation as voluntary. It is a life-saver,” he added.

  • NGO lauds stores’ donation to vulnerable women, children

Save Our Needy (SON), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) that caters for the needs of vulnerable women and children, has lauded PEP Stores for donating items worth over N1 million to the less privileged.

The items including clothing, toys and baby nappies, were presented to  SON’s Chief Executive Officer Ms Marvella Odili and the Programmes Manager, Mr. Jerry Odili as part of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Ms Odili said the items would be distributed to widows, single mothers and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

She said that since 2011, the NGO has been in the business of “ending extreme poverty through the promotion of education for vulnerable children as well as youth and women empowerment.”

Ms Odili urged widows, single mothers and unemployed young women interested in any of the items to send on-line requests to saveourneedy@gmail.com. She urged them  to explain how the donated items would assist them in starting up small businesses and how they would manage them.

  • N225,000 was a donation not bribe, says Rickey Tarfa

Embattled Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Chief Rickey Tarfa yesterday admitted that he gave N225,000 to Justice M. N. Yunusa of the Federal High Court, but explained that the money was not a bribe.

He said it was a donation from him and some of his friends towards the burial of Justice Yunusa’s father-in-law who died on December 28, 2013.

In an affidavit filed on his behalf at the Federal High Court, Lagos, before Justice Mohammed Idris by one John Olusegun Odubela, Head of Chambers of Messrs Rickey Tarfa and Co., dated February 18, the senior advocate  denied bribing the judge with the money or “any other sum at all.”

Tarfa appeared yesterday before Justice Idris in continuation of his N2.5 billion fundamental rights suit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for wrongful arrest and detention.

He was represented by  Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN), Anthony Idigbe (SAN) and four other SANs as well as 115 other lawyers.

The EFCC was represented by Mr. Wahab Shittu and five others.

Tarfa was arrested by operatives of the commission on February 5, within the premises of the Lagos State High Court in Igbosere after a five-hour stand off during which the EFCC claimed that he prevented its operatives from arresting two of Tarfa’s clients.

The commission alleged that Tarfa hid the foreigners in his car from about 11:30 am until some minutes past 5pm.

In response to the senior lawyer’s suit, the EFCC filed preliminary objection on the grounds that the court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

In a counter-affidavit filed on February 19 by one of the commission’s operatives that arrested Tarfa, Moses Awolusi said  that a check carried out on the Access Bank account of Tarfa’s law firm revealed that a sum of N225,000 was sent to Justice Mohammed Yunusa on January 7, 2014.

The EFCC claimed on Thursday that the amount was a bribe.

Awolusi said: “I know from the facts revealed during investigation that the said bribe of N225,000 was accepted and acknowledged by Justice Yunusa in a text message to the applicant, wherein he said, ‘Thank you, my senior advocate.’

“I also know that investigations have revealed that the applicant’s law firm was in the habit of asking the Chief Registrar of the Lagos Judicial Division of the Federal High Court to assign his cases before His Lordship, Honourable Justice M.N. Yunusa in furtherance of the understanding between the applicant and the particular judge.”

However, Tarfa averred through Odubela that the money in question was a donation from a committee of friends of the judge, including him, to support the judge in respect of  the burial of his late father-in-law in Maiduguri since they could not be there physically.

Odubela stated that his principal, Tarfa, was not informed upon his arrest and detention on February 5 by the EFCC that he was arrested on the allegation of bribing the judge.

He said the claim of the EFCC that the judge acknowledged the receipt of the alleged bribe by a text message which reads: “Thanks my senior advocate”, was untrue.

In urging the court to dismiss Tarfa’s claim for exemplary damages of N2.5b, Shittu said from the facts  available  the commission never set out to arrest the applicant.

He said Tarfa invited arrest by obstructing the commission’s officials from carrying out their lawful duties.

“I urge the court to dismiss the entire suit with punitive costs,” Shittu added.

  • Beyond Ambode’s donation to police

SIR: In a bid to combat crime, Lagos State government magnanimously donated 100 4-door salon cars, 55 Ford Ranger pick-ups, 10 Toyota land cruiser pick-ups, 15 BMW power bikes, 100 power bikes, Isuzu trucks, three helicopters, two gun boats, 15 armoured personnel carriers to the Rapid Response Squad and the  Nigeria Police Force. I must appreciate the efforts of the Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, who has proven that he is aware of the state of security in Lagos. However, this donation is one of the endless donations to the police since they have become the biggest target for Corporate Social Responsibility.

There are many organizations that keep donating to the Nigeria Police but we rarely see the job done by these vehicles. These vehicles are stationed at various parts of the state for some weeks after it has been given, noticed for a while, thereafter, they varnish from the streets.

The operations in which these vehicles operate at optimum level are illegal operations such as roadblocks when people would be forcefully demanded of cash. Or when they ply one-way for no ‘emergency reason’ under the mindset that they are above the law or when they chase after a vehicle overloaded with goods.

In this country, the vehicles used by the Nigeria Police Force are the mostly scruffy; let’s think of the various vehicles of the police that we see on the streets. One of the many questions beginning for an answer is, ‘where are the older vehicles donated to RRS and the Police?’ Yes, the rate at which a vehicle deteriorates is fast but the depreciation depends on the maintenance of these vehicles. This was stated by the Lt. Gen. Abdurrahman Dambazau, the representative of President Muhammadu Buahari at the event. Another question to think about is, ‘Who is responsible for the maintenance of these vehicles?

In this country, it is only the vehicles of the Police that cannot be auctioned. The Nigeria Police need to use these vehicles in a civil way. There are a lot of mechanic villages in and around town where these vehicles are abandoned after the reckless use by men of the Police Force. This reflects the level to which government vehicles are ‘nobody’s vehicles’. Many vehicles belonging to government agencies and parastatals are in the garages of retired civil servants while those currently in service carry out their official duties on foot. Policemen are not known to be that reckless with their personal cars.

There is a need for strict monitoring of the vehicle and the users. This will help to curb the abuses of these vehicles. Telecommunications companies can offer to ‘donate’ as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility car tracking devices for effective monitoring just like that they do to their fleet. Fleet monitoring will checkmate the excesses of these officers in the delivery of their statutory roles.

The Police Force and Rapid Response Squad should use these vehicles conscientiously so that the citizenry can have a good story to tell of these donations from taxes of Lagosians. Henceforth, taxpayers should be able to enjoy their hard-earned wages without the fear of criminals either on the road or in the comfort of their houses.

  • ‘No good government will allow N21b donation’

‘No good government will allow N21b donation’

The Coordinator of the Coalition of Democrats for Electoral Reform (CODER), Ayo Opadokun, has chided the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Federal government over the N21 billion donation to President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign.

He said only an unserious government can close its eyes to iniquity and impunity.

The National Democratic Coalition (NADECO)  Secretary told reporters in Offa, Kwara State, that the campaign fund was embarassing. He spoke after delivering a lecture organised by the  Offa Students Union.

Opadokun said: “Money is not everything. Their big naira that they have budgeted for that election will fail them because it appears that Nigerians are ready for a change. They cannot be governed continuously in this way.

“I went to jail several times in the struggle to return democracy to Nigeria. We thought that, after that struggle, after we have sent the military packing, those elements that will take over government will work for the greatest interest of our people. But, that is not what is happening. Look at the infrastructure, they are in a terrible mess. By and large, I am sure that this situation cannot continue in this way.

“Abuja, as glamorous as they have made it, if there is no oil money for two or three years, it will collapse.

Opadokun said the sources of the campaign fund should be probed. He added: “They should ask where those people got such money. Did they get the money from their father’s houses? Those monies are part of the commonwealth of Nigeria.

“Any government, properly so called, should not have allowed such iniquity to appear. It is too much of an eyesore.

“Almost 24 states in Nigeria today cannot pay their salaries in the last two months and yet these so-called elements in public office are collecting N21bn for presidential election. There is too much deceit and they are not even thinking wisely.  Who do they want to impress that they organized a fund raiser?

“The social services have totally collapsed. The more petroleum dollars they have, the more misery they add to the Nigerian people. Something must give way, it cannot continue to this way.

“If Nigerian sare ready to take their destiny in their hands, they must go democratically and put a strong action to demand that these people should surrender.

Opadokun, who  said the PDP has violated the law, lamented that no authority can probe the ruling party.

He stressed: “It is a violation of electoral law. Who will prosecute them? Justice Muhammed Uwais electoral panel recommended a set of actions that this government had turned into their dustbin. One of them is that there must be establishment of electoral offenses commission and that the commission will have statutory members and members of the civil society.

“That commission will have prosecutorial powers so that they can prosecute any electoral offender. They must not wait for the fiat or approval of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice because the commission will have independent prosecutorial powers. They have not created it and I know this government will not create it.”

A member of the Kwara state House of Assembly, Alhaji Oyeleke Hassan, aligned with the CODER convener.

He said: “What the federal government is doing is just sheer impunity because it is refusing to abide by the constitution. It shows the level of our legal development. It appears that the situation is worse than the late General Sanni Abacha’s administration

“They have Attorney-General, the president has been there for nothing less than 6 years, they cannot claim not to be aware of the electoral act. Here they are celebrating the donation of over N21bn. It is sheer impunity,

“In fact, it is an impeachable offence. The President should go and the party is supposed to be sanctioned? So where is INEC and who is supposed to bring sanity to this party? That is why the All Progressives Congress (APC) has become a good alternative. President Goodluck and PDP have violated the electoral act very clearly.”

  • N500m Shell donation divides community

    N500m Shell donation divides community

Members of the Oloma community in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State are quarrelling over a N500 million donation by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to the community fund.

The Nation learnt that youths, women and groups  are preparing for a showdown with the leadership of the Oloma Council of Elders over the alleged misappropriation of the money from the oil giant.

The Secretary-General of Oloma community, Warisenibo Gabriel Godwin, has written to the SPDC management, accusing the Chairman of Oloma Council of Elders, Sir Amarigha Edward Hart, of misappropriating hundreds of millions of naira.

Godwin, who is also the secretary of the Project Community Trust (P-CT), also accused Hart of assuming the status of “a demi-god” in the community, acting with impunity and threatening the running of the community’s organisation.

In the letter, he called for  SPDCs intervention to avert the breach of peace in the community.

Decrying Hart’s leadership style, the secretary said as an oil bearing community, SPDC pays certain funds as part of its Global Project memorandum of understanding.

He said details of such payments are not only kept secret to members, but are also kept away from him.

Godwin said SPDC deals with Hart alone, through one of its workers (name withheld), thereby ignoring the statutes of the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMOU), reached between the Oloma community and the oil giant (SPDC).

One of the aides to Hart denied the allegation, saying: “We will speak when the time is ripe. But take it from me that Oloma community is calm and peaceful as we speak.”
